14th Saturday – Bozeman, MT -
As they were eating breakfast, Susan said, “I presume we want to watch your colleagues compete. Do you know when those events take place? How does that fit with the exhibition?”
“The exhibition opens at 10, I believe,” responded Liam. “An aspect, I overlooked, is that we need to assist our participants. Primarily, we need to have someone with the horses at all times while they are at the arena.”
“So there is a dark side to the competion?”
“Unfortunately,” replied Nituna. “It is part of the reason I am along.”
“She use to ride competitively,” noted Cass. “So some of our riders look to her for assistance.”
“If I remember correctly the brochure indicated three software suppliers.”
“There are usually a few more than appear in the brochure. While the software is our primary reason for coming, we want to see what all is being promoted.”
“Does that include equipment?”
“Oh, definitely,” replied Cass. “Some may be appropriate for what you and Lena are planning.”
“Ah ... a one track mind,” noted Nituna with a chuckle.
Laughing Susan responded, “Depends on the topic. I don’t believe that is the case when it involves situational awareness.”
“I noticed that last night. You were nicer than I would have been.”
“Well the next step would have been a broken arm or possibly a dislocated shoulder. Which would have likely ruined our evening.”
Liam said, “You know the equipment displays may open before the exhibit hall. Shall we try that after we get the horses and riders situated? If they are not open, then we can go check on our colleagues.”
Cass responded, “Let’s do that.” Both Nituna, and Susan nodded.
It was late afternoon, when the group gathered together in the barn where the horses participating in the rodeo were housed. Liam said, “I think we’ve accomplished what we came to do. Now that your competitions are complete, what are your plans.”
Rylee responded, “We were bouncing around the idea of staying to watch some of the evening events. However, we haven’t sorted out how to do that and monitor the horses.”
Cass looked at Liam then said, “Well ... I guess we could take them back to the B & B for you.”
“Oh, that would be greatly appreciated,” responded Rylee, with Mila, Jesse, and Kaiden nodding.
Liam cautioned, “It would be wise to stay together and be careful with your drinks.” Then with a lighter tone, “Let’s gather up your stuff and move the horses to the trailer.”
It didn’t take them long to move the horses to their trailer and load their riding gear in the pickup. Mila said, “We should move our backpacks to the SUV.”
When they had their backpacks, Liam said, “Let me show where it is parked.” To Cass, Nituna, and Susan, he said, “Do you want to wait here?”
“We can,” replied Nituna with the others nodding agreement.
After Kaiden handed Cass the pickup keys the group left for the SUV. The group hadn’t been gone very long when the women heard a voice holler, “There is that bitch!”
Turning in that direction, they saw the man who had pawed Susan in the restaurant last night headed in their direction. Susan mumbled, “Oh, oh.” They could see that the man’s hand was now covered with a bandage. From what they could tell several those with him, were trying to redirect him. However the man was ignoring them as he pushed them out of his way to continue heading toward Susan and her friends.
Susan said softly, “Let me handle this.”
As he came closer, his loud voice had drawn the attention of those nearby. When he was only a few feet from here one of those in his group said, “Slim. You need to let this go. It was you that caused the incident.”
“Well she didn’t need to mess up my hand,” he screamed.
“Then you shouldn’t have put your hand on me uninvited,” responded Susan firmly in a voice that carried across the lot. “I don’t know you. I had never seen you until you put your hand on my shoulder, then when I objected you placed it on my ass.”
A nearby woman was heard to say, “He did that to me, too.”
Slim glanced around when he heard the woman’s voice. He quickly turned his attention back to Susan. “Cause of you I will miss the next two rodeos.”
“Not my fault. Actions have consequences. I suggest you follow your friends advice.”
“Not until you are punished.” With that a knife appeared in his hand. Several gasps were heard from the bystanders. Slim’s friends moved away from him. Slim’s face was red with rage as he pointed the knife at her and began to edge closer to Susan.
“So you want to attack me with a knife in front of all these people.”
He made a thrust that started to shift into a slicing motion. Susan grabbed his wrist, then twisted his arm up behind his back. When attempted to pull away, there was a pop. He screamed as he fell to the ground, with his leg at an odd angle.
Liam came running up followed by a site security member. They found Slim laying on the ground screaming with his leg at an odd angle. Susan was carefully watching him. Nearby Nituna was standing with her foot on the knife.
The security woman said, “What’s going on?”
An on looker said, “He attacked her with a knife.”
It was then that Cass noticed that Susan’s jacket was cut just under her breast. She said softly, “Susan you jacket has a cut under your breast.”
Susan nodded to Cass then to the security woman she firmly said, “Would you summon an ambulance?”
Susan waited until after she had given her statement, to change her jacket. It was a little over two hours later when the Sheriff approached Susan and those with her. Smiling he said, “You all can be on your way. Normally we would ask you to hang around the area, but based on the statements we’ve obtained I don’t see a need. If you are needed to testify at the trial, the DA will get in touch with you.”
“Thank you. We plan to head back tomorrow morning. Except for this I think we all enjoyed our visit here.”
“Hope you all come back. Have a safe trip.”
Once they were in the pickup Susan said, “I am hungry. Let’s get the horses taken care of then find a place to eat.”
“I’m all for that,” responded Nituna. With that they were soon pulling out of the fairgrounds.
When they exited the pickup at the B & B, Cass said, “After we get the horses squared away, I think we should freshen up before going to dinner.”
“Good idea,” replied Susan.
It was a little after 7 when they pulled up to the same restaurant where they ate the night before. Liam said, “Before you ask, I didn’t make reservation this afternoon. So we may have to wait a while for a table, but there only four of us tonight. To ease our hunger, we could have an appetizer in the bar while waiting.”
Laughing Susan joked, “Think it is safe for me to go in to that bar.”
“Certainly,” the three responded.
At the hostess station, Liam said, “Good evening, Cindy. We have a group of four but no reservation.”
“Good evening. Glad you to have you dining with us again. You are fortunate that we had a cancelation, so I can seat you now.”
“Great.”
Once they were seated, Cindy said, “Rosalie will be your server this evening.”
As Cindy stepped away, Rosalie came over with water then took their drink and appetizer order.
Liam inquired, “So Susan was there anything in particular that you liked?”
“It is hard to pick just one. The variety of tack was larger than I had imagined. It all looked to be well made. It looked to be as robust as the gear Slim showed us, so now I am anxious to see what he is making for us. A couple of vendors had a nice selection of riding clothes, so I noted their contact information. As to equipment, there were several items that I thought would make it easier for us to care for the horses and maintain the stable. I asked for literature, so when it comes time to purchase, we will seek your advice and perhaps AJ’s and Miria’s. With respect to software, there were two products I prefer. In both cases, you purchase the software outright and upgrades are handled the same way.”
“When you discuss equipment, please include me,” noted Nituna. “You definitely should include AJ and Miria.”
“We will,” responded Susan with Cass and Liam nodding in agreement.
Cass said, “As to software, I think we should do an extensive test of the two products we liked.”
“Agreed,” responded both Liam and Susan.
Susan added, “However, I am leaning toward the one by MWC software. Primarily because it offers the option of us adding features specific to fit our needs. The two representatives I spoke to indicated that they would like to see any routines we add. They were also interested in hearing what we thought of the software. The other software representatives indicated an interest in feedback, but it felt insincere.”
“I have to admit I liked the capability of being able to add unique functions, but I am not sure any of us know how to do that.”
“It looked pretty straight forward. As to not knowing, I am sure I can assist you in resolving that. It may require someone to take a few programming classes, which are likely online or available locally.”
As they were finishing their dessert Cass said, “I am ready to sit back and relax.”
“Great idea,” the three responded.
14th Sunday – Bozeman, MT -
Susan, Liam, Cass, and Nituna were having breakfast at the Sage Brush B & B, when Kaiden, Jesse, Mila, and Rylee joined them.
Smiling Nituna inquired, “Late night?”
“Not really,” responded Mila. “It was just a long day. Although we did stop by a dance hall for a short time after we left the rodeo. We only stayed at the rodeo long enough to watch the events in which we participated.”
Rylee added, “I think participating yesterday then watching others gave us some ideas on how to improve. However, after what I saw yesterday my thoughts of participating in rodeos professionally has changed. Now doing that seems like it take most if not all the fun out of it.” Kaiden, Jesse, and Mila nodded in agreement.
“So when are you all leaving?” inquired Kaiden.
“Well I think we can be ready to leave shortly after we finish breakfast,” responded Liam. “Does that suit you all?”
He looked at the others, then said, “Suits us. Doing that should have us home around lunch time.”
It was a little after 8 when they pulled out of the Sage Brush, and were soon on the highway headed for home. Nituna, Cass, Susan, and Liam chatted for a bit about what they had seen. After a bit it tapered off and their attention shifted to watching the passing scenery.
Susan’s thoughts soon turned inward. The incidents in Bozeman bothered her in how they came about. She wondered, if she could have responded differently and succeeded in deterring him. After sifting through the events, she felt she had responded correctly. Then thoughts shifted to the incident at the stable near Bar Nunn. Again, she reviewed the events. As she had in the past, she came to the same conclusion she had responded appropriately. Her response was only one that would keep him from beating the horse. Unfortunately, his actions led to him being injured. Then her thoughts shifted to her abduction. She realized that their initial success was due to her failure to recognize the clues that she should have noticed. Now she felt that should have been more aware and not overlooked several clues seen on entering the stable. Thankfully, Steve and Tracey became suspicious of her extended absence and came to her rescue, again. She sighed.
At that point, Susan thought she heard a soft voice say, “It is always wise to review events. Doing so may give you an idea on how to be more aware and ready to respond to an event. You have done well. I anticipate that you will do as well or better in the future as you now are more aware of your surroundings. Relax, I will always be there for you.”
Susan looked around then said, “Did you say something?”
“Nope,” replied Cass. “Just enjoying the passing scenery. Thought you were doing the same.”
“Well, sort of, it is a lovely view. My thoughts drifted off to reviewing some recent incidents. In doing so, I was trying to determine if the response I chose was the best one.”
Nituna responded, “From what I saw Friday night and yesterday, your response to that sleaze bag was appropriate and more restrained than I think I would have been.”
A soft voice again intruded on Susan’s thoughts, “See how you are perceived. Well done.”
Realizing it wasn’t from those in the truck, Susan thought, “Who are you?”
The soft voice responded to her, “Soon you will know but now is not the time.”
Realizing she had missed a comment Susan said, “Sorry, I missed that.”
“We noticed,” responded her smiling fellow passengers.
Liam responded, “I’ve heard a little about the incident that occurred when you obtained Dante. Based on what I heard, if I had been there I would have shot the bastard. If you had done so then the subsequent event may not have occurred. From what I’ve heard, the sheriff’s investigation of his death has uncovered a whole raft of illicit activity he was involved in.”
“Wow, that is news to me.”
“What happened?” enquired Cass as Nituna nodding. Seeing Susan’s look of resignation, she added, “I can assure you that we would not run around repeating the story. However, knowing what happened would let us correct those who don’t tell it correctly.”
Susan thought about it for several moments then said, “Well several of us went with Lena to look at two horses she wanted to buy...”
When she finished the story she added, “I heard after we were back here, that the man died in the hospital. Well to be more correct, he was murdered. Who and why I never heard.”
With tears in her eyes, Cass declared, “In my opinion, you should get an award for intervening on behalf of Dante. However, I agree with Liam, you aimed to low.”
Nituna placed her hands around Susan’s and said, “You’ve responded appropriately. If you are confronted with similar situations in the future, may the Goddess stand with you as you respond.”
“A Goddess. She is an entity that I’ve seldom heard mentioned and I am not sure why.”
“True for modern culture. Many older cultures acknowledged the presence of both Gods and Goddesses. Our belief system has both, but westerners tend to focus only on a God. I sense that you think that there are both.”
“I didn’t think much about it until I read a fiction story, that caused me to consider that possibility. The story was ‘Kalliste’, by I believe Bruce Bretthauer. While the story was very good, it was the underlying concept that prompted me to consider that there are both Gods and Goddesses. For a long time my view was based on the common belief that one of the Ten Commandments, says there was only one God. However, when I went back and read it, that was not quite what the Commandment implies. So I’ve come to believe that there are both and more than one, but how to acknowledge Them has been lost or is now well hidden.”
“We face similar issues,” responded Nituna. “Partially because our knowledge was verbally passed from one generation to the next. There was a time in the recent past where even that was difficult to do. Thankfully for us, not all was lost.”
They spent the rest of the trip talking about the tribe’s system of beliefs, and celebrations. Susan noted that the timing of some tribal celebrations was similar to that of the Celts.
When they turned on to the ranch’s lane, Cass said to Susan, “It is lunch time, so why don’t you join us. Then before we take you over to Lone Pine, we can give you a tour as I don’t think you’ve been here before.”
“Well several times when out riding, I thought about visiting you all. However, when I thought of it, I wasn’t prepared to do it. Besides I wasn’t near the road when I thought of it, which was the only route I knew.”
Liam responded, “I’ll pull together a map with landmarks noted so you can come cross country. I don’t think you would have a problem finding us without it, but a map will make it easier. I wouldn’t ride along the road unless it was the only choice.”
“Well the first time we rode horses to the Bar H, we followed the county road. When their wranglers heard that they showed us the path they use. It takes about the same amount of time, but it is definitely safer than riding along the county road. Especially with the way some people drive. It has nicer views.”
“Very true,” noted Cass.
After lunch Cass and Liam showed Susan the ranch offices then the area from which they operated their drone. While in that area, Cass brought up several of the drone images, They showed portions of the herd with their location noted on the topographical map.
Seeing the images Susan wondered, “How are you counting the livestock?”
“Currently by hand,” replied Cass. “It is a bit tedious. Plans are to automate it, but I suspect it will be a while.”
“You might want to try doing an image comparison of one with cattle present and one without. The images probably should be taken at about the same time of day.”
“Now that is an interesting idea. Thanks.”
On leaving the offices, they toured the barns, shops, and other buildings. They showed Susan the house they shared. As they were showing Susan around, she saw and spoke to those who had helped them with moving the stuff out of their barn. They were walking back to the SUV, when Susan inquired, “Where are you putting up the barn?”
In response Liam pointed to a spot quite a distance away. “It is that bare spot. There is some equipment to the left of it. To the right by about two fingers is a current winter shelter.”
“That is quite a ways from here.”
“Well we have plans to build a few houses over in that direction. We feel we need to spread out a bit more with our houses.”
“I gather that this is all of your tribe.”
“Sort of. It is all of those who wish participate in operating the ranch.” He looked at Cass then added, “The ranch is owned by the AT Trust. The officers of the Trust must be members of this tribe and meet certain criteria. The AT Trust was set up my the original landowner, an Irishman, who had good relations with the Apsaálooke. How it came about? Well it is a rather interesting story, that needs more time to tell than we have today. The Department of Indian Affairs has sought several times to have the trust revoked, but have not been successful.”
“My impression was that your group was hired to run the ranch by somebody. So what you’ve told me fits with that impression.”
Cass laughed, “Good that is an impression we try to promote. We’ve pretty much shown you everything, so I can drive you back if you are ready to go.”
“Let’s. I am sure you have tasks that need attending to, and I know I do.”
As they turned toward where the SUV was parked Liam said, “Let’s have Nituna go with you as I have a few things that need my attention.”
Susan gave Liam a hug and said, “I really enjoyed our time together. Thanks for setting it up.”
“While each of us could have done it on our own, I think by doing it together benefited both of us. I’ve enjoyed our time together.”
As they reached the SUV, they saw Nituna approaching. Susan gave Liam a hug before entering the SUV.
They had gone part way down the lane when Susan inquired, “Do you always go out in pairs?”
“Pairs or more,” responded Nituna. “It is generally safer that way. When we ride, we prefer to go out in at least pairs but preferably threes. There is a risk going anywhere alone, especially as thinly populated as we are here. Although, if we are going somewhere close, like to Lone Pine, we may go alone.”
“I hadn’t thought of it quite that way. In many western stories, they show a single person out riding in open country. What is not apparent is that the population was much less during that time than it is today.”
“By going in small groups, we generally experience less subtle harassment in town.”
“Ah, so that was part of the concern when you went with me to rent the equipment.”
Smiling Cass, responded, “Perhaps when asked. However, I think the owner at the first place was upset with anyone associated with Lone Pine. That time I don’t think our heritage was a factor. Going with you was a benefit, as we learnt that Abernathy was a good place to rent equipment. As to why, we hadn’t rented there before, I don’t know. It could be because they are a relatively new business.”
A few moments later they turned onto Lone Pine’s lane. Susan noted that the lack of a barn was noticeable but not obvious. After they stopped in front of the building, Cass and Nituna both got out to say good bye to Susan with hugs. Before pulling away Cass said, “You are welcome to visit us anytime.”
“Thank you. I will.”
Susan watched for a moment as her friends headed down the lane then she turned to go inside. As she crossed the Common area heading to the elevator, several residents waved to her. On entering her suite, she saw the message light was flashing which was not unexpected. She started toward it, then decided to take a shower and change clothes. Exiting the shower she thought, “Perhaps I’ll wear an orb this evening, as it has been a while since I’ve felt those nice sensations.”
