13th Tuesday – May 16th – Lone Pine -

When Susan entered the gym for Tai Chi, she noticed several looking out the back of the gym. Lena saw her and smiled as she said, “They’ve started on the barn.”

“Great.”

Janet rang the chime then said, “Ladies, it is time to take your positions.” Everyone then arranged themselves to begin their session. Once they were in position, she started the music.

As Susan and Lena were eating breakfast, Kathy came over to the table. She said, “Six of us are going over to SK Ranch in a few minutes. Several others have indicated an interest, so I have a waiting list. We should be back for dinner. If not I’ll let security know.”

“Thanks for letting us know. I presume everyone is carrying.”

“Yes. They were reluctant at first, but after noting the similarity to our horseback rides they agreed.”

“You might want to take a first aid kit.”

“There is one in the pickup. I am taking a radio as well.”

“Good. Let me know how it goes.”

“Will do. See you this evening.”

Jen, Caitlin, and Marcy came up to the table as Kathy was leaving and said, “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” replied Susan and Lena. Susan waved indicating they were welcome to join them.

“Caitlin, I thought you would have joined Kathy today,” noted Susan.

“Well I have a few things I need to do, besides I was sort of looking forward to assisting with baling. I am curious as to how mechanized the baling effort will be. Besides Kathy has quite a list of voluneters.”

Lena said, “For round and large square bales, it is essentially fully mechanized. For bales like we use, there is still quite a bit of physical effort needed. Collecting the bales in the field then placing them storage is quite labor intensive. However, there is now equipment that automates much of the physical handling of the bales. For some time there have been balers that transfer the bales directly to a trailing wagon. While that reduces manual handling, stacking for storage is hot and strenuous. Although I haven’t used it, there is now equipment that stacks the bales on to a wagon. The stacked bales can then be handled with mechanical equipment. However, mechanizing bale handling requires special equipment that is not inexpensive plus there are maintenance costs. I can assure you that physically stacking hay bales in a barn loft is hot, tiring, dirty, and exhausting work.”

“So you’re going to help with the baling?” Caitlin responded with a grin.

“You betcha.” After the laughing died down, she added, “It will be nice to do that again, well most of it.”

“That’s right you grew up on a farm, I believe,” noted Marcy.

After breakfast Lena and Susan went out to see how the work was coming on removing the barn. When Brian saw them approaching, he walked over then said, “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” replied both. Lena then asked, “Any issues?”

“No. Hopefully we will have everything out of the interior and most of the siding off by the end of the day.”

After chatting with him for a few moments, Lena and Susan walked over to check on the horses. Marcy and Caitlin were by the water tank. Caitlin said, “We added some water to the tank. While we were doing that the horses came over.”

Dante nudged Lena to the side, as he pushed forward to reach Susan. In doing so, he really stretched the boundary rope. Smiling Susan stepped closer to him and hugged his neck then scratched his chin. As this was occurring Cedar moved up and nudged Lena seeking attention. After a few moments Silver nudged Lena seeking attention. After a short time with the horses, Susan said, “Well I have some work that needs my attention.”

“Yea,” responded Marcy, “but this is more relaxing.”

“Did you get more horses?” inquired Caitlin.

“Yes,” responded Lena. “We obtained four mares from the AT Ranch. Two are here to be bred. The other two we purchased. We aren’t sure how well they are trained, so far now they won’t be available for riding.” She then pointed out the new horses.

“See you all later.” After patting Dante, Susan started toward the house. She had only taken a few steps when the others joined her. They stopped at the shop to shutoff the water and disconnect the hose. On entering the house, Marcy and Caitlin said, “See you at lunch,” then turned toward Hall B. Susan had a puzzled expression for a moment then remembered that they used one of the Hall B offices.

Susan, Lena and Caitlin were nearly finished with dinner when Kathy came up to the table. As they exchanged greetings, Susan waved to her indicating she should sit down. Susan asked, “So how did it work out?”

“Well it was interesting,” replied Kathy. “The orientation on operating the equipment was straight forward and didn’t take long. However, actually operating them in the field was initially quite challenging. Shawn rode with us in the combine to coach whoever was operating it. The rest of us either drove a semi or a tractor pulling a wagon along side the combine to catch the silage. After Clint showed us how to do that, he monitored us as it was unloaded into the silo. We did switch off, so all of us spent time driving the combine.

“The other tidbits are that Clint’s wife Autumn is off visiting her parents in Montana. They have four teenage children. We only saw the children for a short while before they left for school. When we were introduced, Clint mentioned that we were from a near by ranch and were going to help with gathering the silage.

“When I saw their puzzled expressions, I elaborated that we lived on Lone Pine Ranch. We had more interaction with them after school. Based on our limited interaction, they are typical teenagers. The boys, Leon and Art, helped with evening chores. Sherri decided to ride with Chloe in the truck.

“Going back to silage harvest. Both Shawn and Clint seemed pleased by how much we managed to get done. They expect this harvest will take a week. So tomorrow six of us will assist them, then we will drop back to just four. By doing that four of us can rotate and not impact the tasks we need to do here.”

“Thank you for taking the lead on assisting them.”

“One aspect we didn’t expect, is that we will be paid. This is because we are a substitute for day labor they would normally hire. I know that wasn’t our intent, but didn’t see a way to gracefully decline it.”

“I can see that. I wonder why they don’t have wranglers like the Bar H does.”

Lena said, “Perhaps the children help when they are not in school. Still considering the acreage, it seems like they would need at least a couple of wranglers.”

“To change the subject,” said Kathy. “I see they’ve got all the siding off of the barn.”

“Really, I didn’t look before coming down,” responded Lena. “When we spoke with Brian this morning, he noted that was their goal. I suspect taking the structure apart won’t proceed as quickly.”

“How are the horses?”

“Fine. Why?”

“The boundary fence isn’t as substantial as what I thought would be needed.”

“Some electrify the boundary cable. We chose not to because what we have is really a pasture within a pasture. Unless something startles them, I don’t expect them to cross the boundary cable.”

As they were preparing to leave the dining room, Kathy said, “I see a couple of people I need to talk to. See you all tomorrow.”

“Okay,” they replied.

13th Wednesday – Lone Pine -

When Susan exited her suite on the way to Tai Chi, she saw Kathy, Tricia, April, Joan, Onida, and Belinda standing by the elevator. They were dressed in jackets, riding skirts, and wearing boots. Kathy waved as the group entered the elevator. Susan said, “Go ahead. I’ll use the steps.”

“Okay,” responded Kathy. “See you this evening.”

Entering the gym from the Common area, Susan saw several people at the back window that overlooked the barn. Seeing Jackie near where they did Tai Chi, she walked over to her then said, “Looks like you have an attraction that will draw residents to your domain.”

Smiling she responded, “It seems to be doing that, although they seem more interested in the activity outside than exercising.”

“Well there will be activity out there for the next five weeks or so. I wonder if placing some of the exercise equipment by the windows would encourage their use.”

“Actually that is a good idea. I’ll move a few later this morning. So how is assisting our neighbors going?”

“The group that went to SK Ranch, thought it went well. Kathy thought they accomplished more than the Kelly’s anticipated. Our assistance will likely last into next week. After breakfast, a group of us are riding over to Bar H. This is to assist them with baling, as AJ and Miria indicated they would welcome some assistance.”

“I saw the sign up lists. I don’t think you will lack volunteers as it makes a nice diversion from routine activities.”

“Well the work at SK Ranch is mostly operating equipment to harvest silage. The Bar H is baling hay for the next week or so. I am not sure what our role will be as I understand that how it is done now has changed since the last time I was involved.”

As Susan and Lena left the dining room after breakfast, they told Caitlin, Dakota, Tricia, and Anneke that they would meet them at the temporary stable. Since they were already dressed for the day, they stopped by the barn to see if Brian had any questions. When they saw him, he was involved in a task. He looked up, and they waved. He shook his head no and went back to his task. They then walked over to the temporary stable, then entered through the tack side. They selected their riding gear, then carried it up to the front area and set it down. Standing in the doorway, they whistled, and Dante and Cedar started toward them with the other horses following. By the time they had Dante and Cedar saddled, those going with them had brought their riding gear out front. Lena and Susan assisted Janet and Anneke saddle the horse they chose. Once everyone was ready, they mounted up and headed for the Bar H.

On leaving Lone Pine, they decided to follow to road to Bar H, since they weren’t familiar with the location of the gates in the fence. They were part way down the Bar H lane when Lena asked, “Did Miria say where to meet up?”

“No. I guess if it is not obvious we should stop by the house.”

When they reached the house Caitlin noticed several hats waving over near a group of equipment, and said, “I think that group is trying to get our attention.” With that they turned toward the group.

On reaching the group, they dismounted and exchanged greetings, Susan inquired, “How can we assist you today?”

“Well we need a few of you to accompany wranglers as they check on the cattle,” responded AJ. “We try to do that in pairs. The rest of us will be baling hay. Who in your group has driven a tractor or large truck that has a manual transmission?”

In response Susan, Lena, Dakota, and Janet nodded. Anneke added, “I did when I was learning to drive if that counts.”

“Sure does as that means you know the fundamentals.”

Caitlin noted, “In that case, you can include me, but I would prefer to ride.”

“We can accommodate that,” responded AJ. He then gave out the assignments. The ladies that weren’t riding today, unsaddled their horses and put them in the pasture adjacent to the stable.

Susan was leading Dante to the pasture gate, when Miria came to her accompanied by a man. Miria said, “This is Jake our farrier.”

Smiling Jake said, “Welcome to Bar H, Susan. You have an outstanding looking horse.”

“Thank you. It was a blessing to find him.” As she spoke, she patted Dante. “Some find him difficult to handle.”

Laughing, Jake said, “So I’ve heard. Miria, indicated you were looking for a farrier.”

“Yes. The one Lone Pine was using has essentially disappeared. I don’t know how long it has been since Dante or Cedar hooves have been tended to as they were purchased only a few weeks ago. As to our other horses, it has been over six weeks. That may not be a problem, since they are seldom on a hard surface.”

“While you all are here, I’ll see what needs to be done.” He looked at Miria, then said, “If all they need is trimming, then if you want I can take care of it today.”

“Well since Miria thinks highly of your skill, I’ll leave it to your judgement. How do we compensate you? Should it be cash or check?”

“Well, it can be direct or through Bar H since I work for them.”

Miria said, “This time let’s treat them. Then when it needs to be done again, you and Dad can sort out an arrangement with them.”

“Fine,” replied Jake. “Susan there are some aspects of hoof care that I don’t have the knowledge to do.”

“Not a problem. Liam from the AT Ranch indicated that their farrier could service our horses on a very limited bases.”

“Good that is who we go to with difficult care.”

“I sense that doing this is sort of a hobby for you.”

“Pretty much as we don’t have enough need for it to be full time.”

Looking at Miria she said, “I guess we should look for some one to train then set them up in business. The question in my mind is where to look.”

Miria said, “County fairs or livestock shows would be a good place to start. Perhaps the high school Ag teachers know of someone. Right now, I think Wade is waiting for you.”

As Susan started to lead Dante into the pasture, Jake said, “I’ll take him.” Jake lightly patted Dante as he took the reins. He then led Dante in to the stable. Susan smiled as she felt Dante would be fine.

It was late afternoon when they brought all the equipment back to the barn. Seeing them return, Jake went to Susan and said, “The hooves of the horses you brought today are now in good shape. Are you bringing the others tomorrow?”

Susan looked at Lena, then said, “We have four more that we can bring over tommorrow. However, Lena will be leading the group tomorrow. Lena this is Jake who is Bar H’s farrier.”

“Thank you for taking care of Cedar,” responded Lena as she shook his hand.

“Dante and Cedar hardly needed any trimming and their shoes look almost new. The other four needed more trimming and their shoes are in good shape.”

“Great. So can I bring four when we come tomorrow and four the following day?”

“Sure.”

Susan, Lena, and Jake, then went to assist with the daily equipment maintenance. They were finishing up when those checking on the cattle returned. With the days work complete, the Lone Pine group began saddling their horses.

Wade, AJ, Miria came over and AJ asked Susan, “Can you all be here a bit earlier tomorrow?”

Lena responded, “Sure. How much earlier?”

“Say before 8 or even by 7 if you can. We may go a bit later, than we did today. If we do, we will provide dinner.”

“Before 8 will be easy as we have sort of have a routine. By 7, well we will try.”

Miria said, “You could join us for breakfast, which starts between 6 and 6:30.”

Lena looked thoughtful then said, “We need to talk about it, and I will call you after dinner.”

“Fine.”

“By the way, Susan won’t be with us tomorrow. So do we need to bring more or less people?”

Before AJ could respond Miria said, “I planned to be involved tomorrow so that will give you the same number of people.”

AJ asked, “Will it always be the same group coming over?”

“Probably not,” replied Lena. “We had a sign up list for each day of this activity. Seeing the orientation that we did this morning, why don’t I bring one additional new person with us tomorrow. Initially they could ride with one of us, to learn how to do the tasks. I think doing that would make us more productive than we were today. This approach would give you a larger pool of experience to draw on.”

“Interesting,” noted Wade. “Okay, why all the interest all of a sudden?”

Lena looked at Susan and nodded. Susan said, “Saying ‘interest’ might be an incorrect term. We’ve come to realize that our security is partially dependent on knowing our neighbors. When Lone Pine was established, the attitude toward unmarried pregnant women was rather negative. Due to that a significant effort was made for us to be anonymous members of the community. We believe that attitude has changed enough that we can be more visible. However, as you’ve likely noticed not all the residents are pregnant. With that in mind, perhaps a better characterization of Lone Pine Ranch is that it is a home for single women some of whom are pregnant. Also, by knowing our neighbors, we think it improves our security.”

Johnson noted, “Well from my perspective, you all being available for assistance is great.”

“Lena, bringing a new person as an extra is a good idea,” said AJ.

Caitlin added, “While it is not apparent, all of us have other obligations. So spending the day assisting you all gives us a nice break from those obligations. So thank you.”

In response both AJ and Miria smiled as they nodded.

With that the Lone Pine group mounted their horses. Wade said, “Give me a moment to get a horse, and I will show you how to get home without riding along side the county road.”

“Great,” responded several.

It was a quarter to 7 when those who went to Bar H entered the dining room. They had barely sat down, when several surrounded them wanting to hear about their day. Susan smiled as she listened to the group enthusiastically describe the day’s activities.

Sitting nearby was Madeline, Kim, Jan, and Jen. Madeline softly said, “Think they will be as enthusiastic by the time the season ends.”

Smiling Jan said, “Yes, but ... well let’s say in a different way. So how do you feel about the changes?”

“Some lingering concerns. Susan’s and your groups arrival, has been good for us in many ways. I hope you all are here for as long as I am.”

“I agree,” added Kim. “To me the atmosphere is a bit more up beat than it was a year ago.”

“Good point,” noted Madeline.

When Susan returned to her suite, she wondered if it was to late to call Tracey and Steve. On checking her email, she found one from Tracey. In it she noted that she was initially concerned when the time for the call passed, but then remembered Susan’s plans for the day. In her note, Tracey suggested a window when she could call this evening. Looking at the clock, she saw that it was within the window.

It didn’t take Susan but a few moments to ensure that the conversation would be private, then initiated the call. As she expected, it wasn’t picked up immediately, and was becoming concerned by the time it did.

“Good evening,” said Tracey as she and Steve appeared on the screen.

Smiling Susan replied, “And a good evening to you all. So how has your week been?”

“Pretty good actually. The programmers you referred to us are making good progress. As to the project you finished that gave multiple correlations. We gave the customer the results with our version of the report. They were quite pleased with it, even though it didn’t give them an unambiguous answer. As to the other pending projects, we are still waiting for additional information.”

“So my work queue is stable.”

“Pretty much. What is happening with you?”
