13th Sunday – Lone Pine -

As Susan was walking toward the swimming pool after Tai Chi, she heard several say that they were not nearly as sore as they had anticipated. She smiled, when she heard Janet tell them that was in part due to their daily exercising. As she swam, she thought about yesterday’s accomplishments. What could have been a difficult four day task, moving the stuff out of the barn was now essentially complete and they had a temporary pasture. During the last few laps, she thought about the visits she would be making to the two ranches tomorrow.

After showering and dressing for the day, she checked her email before going to breakfast. As she entered the dining room, several waved which she acknowledged. Once she had selected her breakfast items, she chose a table near the back of the room. She had just started to eat when she noticed Lena, Marcy and Caitlin approaching. Since her mouth was full, she waved indicating that they were welcome to join her.

“Good morning,” they said as they sat down.

After a moment, Susan responded, “Good morning. What are you all planning on doing today?”

“Relaxing,” said Marcy and Caitlin.

“And you all,” noted Caitlin.

“Nothing like yesterday,” said Lena. “After we move a gate over to the new building, we will take the horses over there.”

“We should fill the stock tank first,” noted Susan.

Lena responded, “True. I believe there is a garden hose in the shop, and there is an outside spigot.”

Caitlin offered, “Well, I can sort out filling the tank, while you all take care of the gate.”

Marcy added, “Caitlin, and I will do that, but first I want to check out our new locker room.”

Smiling Susan said, “You all consider that relaxing.”

“Sure it is not like bucking bales,” responded Caitlin with a smile. “Besides once we start the tank filling, we can assist you all with moving the horses.”

When Susan was finished eating, she looked around the dining room. To her it looked like nearly everyone was there. She said to Lena, “Shall we make our announcement?”

Lena had a puzzled expression for a moment then said, “Sure.”

After Susan and Lena stood, Susan lightly tapped her glass. The ringing sound drew everyones attention and the room became quieter. Susan said, “As many of you know, yesterday we finished moving everything out of the barn. The tack is now temporarily in the back portion of the new building. The riding clothes were moved to a room along the hall we use to reach the barn. This room was apparently used as a locker room sometime in the past. We have Marcy to thank for its discovery. It will certainly be an improvement over the space we used in the barn for that purpose. It has more than enough lockers for us. As to the weapons that we kept in the barn, they were moved to the locker room. Whether we continue to store them there has not been decided.

“Tomorrow or Tuesday, a group from the AT Ranch, will begin tearing down the barn. They expect to be finished by Friday. Stable construction will begin a week from Wednesday. A viewing location for either activity has not been identified yet, but one will be.

“As to moving the stuff out of the barn, we really appreciate the help you all contributed to that effort. The wranglers who assisted us were very pleased with the lunch and refreshments. So THANK YOU.”

Before they could set down, a resident stood and asked, “Can we still ride?”

Lena responded, “Certainly. For now, once you have your riding clothes on, you will need to come up to the first floor and use the Hall F exit. As many of you know, the tack is laid out in the back portion of the building. The front portion is shelter for the horses. For those who haven’t been there, the building is divided into two sections. There is a gate in the barrier between the sections. Its purpose is to make it easy to access the tack when saddling the horses. Make sure you secure the barrier after using it. You can either saddle the horses inside the front area or outside. If you need assistance, just let us know. However, we would like to hold off on horseback riding until Tuesday. Then when out riding, stay away from any construction area and watch out for vehicles.”

“Great,” responded a resident. “Thank you for taking care of the horses.”

“Yes!” shouted many in the room, causing Lena to blush as she sat down.

Susan said, “One more item. The Bar H and AT Ranches will be bailing hay over the next couple of weeks. We offered to assist, if needed. I suspect the Bar-H will ask. So if you are interested send me a note. However don’t shirk your other responsibilities to do this.”

Nancy then stood and said, “If you are past the first trimester, talk to me before you consider assisting with those activities.”

“We will,” responded several residents. As it quieted, a voice said, “Yes, mother.” The group then roared with laughter.

After breakfast, Susan went to get one of the pickups. Lena headed to the barn with Marcy and Caitlin tagging along. Lena, Marcy and Caitlin stopped by the new locker room to check it out. They looked around for a bit then Lena said, “We probably ought to get some shelves for the community clothes.”

Marcy suggested, “Why not one of those frames on wheels that they use in stores to display clothes?”

“Good idea,” responded Caitlin and Lena.

“Where would we get them?” asked Lena.

“Well if Lori doesn’t know,” responded Caitlin, “I’ll look around on the internet.”

By the time they reached the barn, Susan was there with a pickup. She had moved a gate over to the pickup. On seeing her with the gate by the pickup, they went to assist her. Together they were able to easily set the gate in the bed of the pickup.

Lena then said, “Wait, the water hose may still be here, as I don’t remember seeing it in the new building. I’ll bet no one checked the wash area yesterday.”

“Well it is kind of out of the way,” noted Caitlin as she walked that way. After a moment, she said, “Yep, the hose is here as are a few other items.”

After loading the items in the pickup, they took another look around the barn again before leaving. Susan dropped Caitlin and Marcy off at the shop along with the hose, then headed to the building. There they quickly set up the gate and secured one end to the post next to the building. For the time being, they left it open. They then moved the stock tank so it was along the pasture boundary nearest the shop and close to the building. By the time they had it positioned, Caitlin and Marcy were nearly to them with the end of the hose. As Susan and Lena were securing the end of the hose to the tank, Caitlin went back to the shop to turn it on.”

Marcy said, “So when do you want to move the horses?”

“After we have sufficient water in the tank,” responded Lena. “So after lunch, maybe mid afternoon.”

Seeing that the tank was filling, Susan drove them back to the garage. On exiting the truck Marcy enquired, “So you’ll call us when you are ready to move the horses?”

“Definitely,” responded Lena.

It was approaching 4 when Lena let Susan, Marcy, and Caitlin know that the water tank was full. Since they weren’t planning to ride, they chose to just wear a jacket with bust support, a mid length skirt and boots. They quickly gathered the horses, then led them over to the temporary pasture. After releasing them into the temporary pasture, Caitlin noticed a lone rider moving slowing along the county road. Rather than mentioning it right away, she said, “Do we have enough straw on the floor?” With that she walked toward the building with everyone following her inside.

Once they were quite a ways inside, Lena said, “I think it is sufficient.”

Caitlin responded, “Well, the reason for my comment was that I saw a lone rider over near the road. I thought that if we came in here, we could see what he was up to without being apparent.”

From inside the building looking the direction Caitlin pointed, they all saw a rider on horseback over toward the county road. They didn’t have to watch him very long before it was obvious, that the rider spent most of his time looking in their direction as he slowly rode. After a bit, Susan walked over to the intercom and called the Security Center. When they answered she said, “We noticed a rider along the road that seemed awfully interested in us.” After a pause she added, “Okay.”

After hanging up Susan said, “They’re monitoring the rider. It seems that they’ve noticed a rider slowly passing by us quite frequently. It began about the time the construction started. They think it is the same rider each time. They’ve also noticed that the rider often uses binoculars but puts them down whenever a vehicle comes along.”

“Sounds suspicious,” responded Marcy as the others nodded. “However, I am glad that they noticed it.”

Caitlin said, “We need to shut the water off and roll up the hose.”

With that Marcy went over to the shop to turn off the water. When the water flow stopped, they began pulling the hose back toward the shop. They had just started when Susan said, “Wait, why are we putting the hose away? We are going to need it every couple of days while the horses are in this pasture.”

Smiling Lena responded, “Cause we like to be neat. However, I agree, lets leave it laid out.” With that they pulled the end back to the stock tank and secured it to the edge of the tank. Lena, Susan, and Caitlin then walked toward the shop. They met Marcy part way there. Seeing her puzzled expression Lena said, “We decided that since we need to add water every few days, we’ll leave the hose as it lays. We do need to disconnect it at the shop so it can drain.”

“That makes sense,” replied Marcy.

With a big smile Caitlin responded, “Mark it down, she said ‘we make sense’.” They all laughed as they walked toward the house arm in arm.

“So what are you all doing this evening,” queried Marcy.

Caitlin said, “I need to get caught up on some proof reading.”

“I need to spend some time on a programming project,” noted Marcy.

Smiling Lena added, “Relax and read a book.”

Susan said, “Well I am a bit behind my schedule for completing my work, so I will see if I can set one up an analysis this evening then start it. By the way, Miria said she would call to let us know when they would begin baling and how much assistance they needed. Once I know that, I thought of sending a note to all the residents noting the opportunity to assist the Bar H with baling hay along with the dates. Beyond that I haven’t sorted out how to handle it.”

“Why not have a sign up sheet for each day on the bulletin board by the entrance to the dining room,” suggested Caitlin. “It should include space to note experience.”

“Okay, that will work. I’ll note that those who’s offer is accepted will be advised at dinner the day before.”

Lena added, “If you get tied up with something, then I am willing to fill in for you. I also intend to spend some time baling hay.”

“Oh, I plan to be out there as well.”

Caitlin noted, “I’m interested.”

Marcy said, “I’d like to but being at the end of the second trimester, it sort of limits what I can do. Besides I don’t have any experience baling hay.”

“I am sure there are many ways to assist them,” noted Susan.

13th Monday – Lone Pine -

On entering the dining room for breakfast, Susan placed sign up sheets for those interested in helping with baling hay on the bulletin board just inside the entry. There was one for each day, Wednesday through Saturday. When she was walking toward a table after selecting her breakfast items, she noticed several residents at the bulletin board.

She had hardly started eating when Jen and Lena approached the table. Susan nodded. After exchanging greetings, Jen inquired, “Was yesterday the first time you noticed the rider on horseback?”

“Well Caitlin was the first to notice, but yes. They probably weren’t noticed before cause we were focused on our tasks. Even from the barn the rider was not very obvious, so I am not sure what caught Caitlin’s eye. Were you able to tell where they went?”

“Sort of. They rode down past the curve. Yesterday we saw a horse trailer waiting for them. That was the first time we’ve seen a trailer. Perhaps the trailer was further down the road the other times. The drone images didn’t provide any clues as to who they were. All we know so far, is that a rider passes by usually in the afternoon, but not every day or at the same time.”

“Concerned?”

“Sort of, due to the way they hide the use of their binoculars,” replied Jen. “We will keep watching and likely set up to get a better view of the trailer. On another topic, I understand you have a visit scheduled with two of our neighbors.”

“Yes. The SK Ranch at 10 then the DoubleM around 4 this afternoon. I’ve asked Kathy to drive both times. Why?”

“Mind if I tag along.”

“Not at all.”

As they ate breakfast, they discussed a number of things. Not surprisingly the main topics revolved around moving the stuff out of the barn and their interaction with the wranglers.

After breakfast Susan returned to her suite. While there she checked her email. Only a few of them needed a response, which was quickly done. She then went over the lease agreement with SK Ranch for the Lone Pine acreage. By the time she finished, it was time to meet Kathy and Jen.

Susan was ready to step out of the elevator when the door opened on the 1st floor. When it did, she saw Kathy and Jen waiting, so she stepped back.

Kathy said, “Perfect.” With that Kathy and Jen entered the elevator.

Jen said, “Marvelous timing.” Susan and Kathy both laughed.

Susan responded, “Not something, you want to count on.”

“So true,” both responded.

It wasn’t long after leaving Lone Pine, when they turned on to the SK Ranch lane. As they soon saw two houses. A short distance beyond the houses was a man coming toward them from the barn. Kathy stopped when they reached the point where the lane split in three directions. When the man reached the pickup, Kathy rolled the window down. The man sternly inquired, “Can I help you?”

“Good morning,” responded Kathy, “we have an appointment to see a Mr and Ms Kelly.”

“May I ask why?”

Kathy expression hardened as she said, “Perhaps. Who are you?”

“I am their son, Clint.”

“We are from Lone Pine Ranch. Ms Susan Wyland has an appointment to meet with them this morning.”

With a more welcoming tone, he replied, “Oh. Mom mentioned that. Their house is on the right. Pull on up near the house.”

As they followed him up to the house, Susan said, “An interesting change in attitude.”

When they got out of the pickup Kathy introduced herself, Susan and Jen to Clint. He then led them up to the front door and stepped inside. Inside he called out, “Mom, your visitors are here.”

“Be there in a moment.”

It was a few minutes before an older couple entered the family room. Susan, Jen, and Kathy, gasped when they saw the man enter on crutches. A cast covered a good portion of his leg and there were bandages on his arms. The couple appeared to be in their late forties.

Cynthia said, “Good morning. As you can likely guess, we had an incident Friday, so we are a bit out of sorts.”

“Good morning, Mr. and Ms. Kelly,” responded Susan. “Mr. Kelly, we hope you mend quickly. I am Susan Wyland, with me are Jen Arnold and Kathy Monroe.”

“Thank you. First names are fine. My wife is Cynthia and I am Shawn. I see you’ve meant our son Clint.”

“Fine. We met him as we came up the lane.”

Clint said, “Sorry for my attitude earlier.”

“So the children were difficult?” inquired Cynthia.

“Sort of,” he responded then sighed.

Susan said, “The Briana Trust asked us to visit you, as we live nearby on the Lone Pine Ranch. Our visit is a followup to the phone conversations you’ve had with them regarding your acreage lease. On behalf of them, we are here to assure you that they have no plans to cancel the acreage lease you have with them. They also hope you will continue to lease the acreage.”

Shawn replied, “Well, we were shocked when we received the letter. Primarily due to the timing and that there was no warning. Using the contact information in the letter, we contacted them to request an extension. The request was rejected without comment. Our ranch is not large enough to operate profitably without that additional acreage. Due to that, we’ve considered selling, but doing so impacts our son and his family so no decision had been made. We were quite relieved to receive the call last week from the Trust advising us that they had no intention of terminating the lease. Now since I am laid up for a couple of months, we may have difficulty making it through this year.”

With a perturbed expression Clint said, “They received the cancellation letter several weeks ago. So what is going on?”

Susan responded, “The only facts we have are that the Trust did not send the cancelation letter. In fact the Trust did not know about the letter until last Monday. How they came to know about it was due to a series of recent events. Sunday a week ago, the Hawkins family visited Lone Pine. During their visit, Mr. Hawkins mentioned receiving letter and wondered if the changes he saw taking place at Lone Pine had prompted it. Until then we knew nothing of the cancelation letters and advised him of that. We did assure him that we would contact the Trust, first thing Monday to determine what was behind it. As to the construction activity at Lone Pine, we shared with him what was behind the changes taking place around our home. He did indicate that he believed the other lease holders had also received a termination notice. He didn’t indicate how he planned on dealing with the loss of acreage, if the lease cancelation letter was correct.”

“He could probably downsize and be okay.”

“If you still have the letter could I see it? And perhaps the envelope it came in.”

“Sure,” responded Cynthia then she hurried out of the room. When she came back, she handed the letter and envelope to Susan.

Susan and Jen looked over the letter, then Susan said, “The letter head doesn’t appear to be correct and is, I think, missing some information.” After Jen pointed at the postmark, she added, “The location shown in the postmark is not a location where the Trust has offices.”

Kathy looked over her shoulder, then said, “That is not their letter head. I am not sure what the difference is but it is not.”

After a moment Susan inquired, “May I take this letter with me? If allowed, I will make a copy and bring it to you.”

“I can make a copy,” responded Cynthia. “I presume you would like to take the original.”

“Please. I intend to send it to the Trust.”

Cynthia looked at Shawn then Clint then said, “That would be fine. I’ll make a copy now.”

When she came back she handed the original to Susan then said, “Would you like something to drink? The coffee was made just before you arrived. We also have juice, ice tea and water.”

Susan replied, “A cup of coffee sounds great.” Both Kathy and Jen nodded indicating that was their choice.

Clint said, “Mom, I’ll get it. Do you and Dad want a cup?”

“Sure.”

Smiling Susan said, “To be a bit nosy, have you sorted out how you are going to deal with Shawn being on crutches?”

They laughed as Clint sat a tray of coffee cups on the table. As he did, he said, “Does anyone need cream or sugar?”
