Fourth Month

13th Friday – Lone Pine -

After breakfast, Lena and Susan rode over to the steel building for their meeting with Victor, the job superintendent. Just as they reached the building Jan, Jen, Jo, and Caitlin pulled up in a pickup.

After greeting Viktor, Susan introduced Jan, Jen, Jo and Caitlin. In doing so, she indicated that they were there to install the components for the security system.

The Victor said to the group, “You are welcome to use the lifts when the crew isn’t using them, however the lifts are scheduled to be picked up around noon.”

“Thank you,” respond Jan. “That will make a portion of our task much easier.” Jan then drove the pickup into the building and they began unloading.

As that was occurring, Susan inquired, “Are we ready to do the inspection?”

Victor replied, “Sure. The crew should be finished checking the fasteners before 10. So far, they’ve only found issues in the areas where the kid was working. We’ve chosen to replace those fasteners and they are now correctly done.”

“Glad to hear that,” responded Susan with Lena nodding.

As they started the final inspection, Jan, Jen, Jo, and Caitlin began installing the sensors. The conduit for the wires connecting them was run along the lips of structural members to a junction box. Since they weren’t visible from the floor, the conduit connecting the boxes looked like the conduit used for the overhead lighting. Susan and Lena noticed that the activity by Jan’s crew resulted in some puzzled expressions by those checking the fasteners. When Caitlin and Jo mounted a large panel box on the wall next to the entrance panel where the power entered the building, the puzzled expressions disappeared.

It was shortly before 10 when Lena and Susan signed three copies of the contract indicating their acceptance of the building. After thanking Victor, their focus shifted to what was the best way to use the space while it was their temporary stable.

After a few moments, Lena said, “So what are your thoughts?”

With smile Susan responded, “Well considering the weather, I think we can get by without individual stalls for a short time. So, the front quarter should be more than enough space for them.”

“True, as they only need it for shelter and possibly when we saddle them. I guess we could fence off a portion of the building.”

“Well we will be bringing over the hay bales, so we could use the bales to build a wall. It probably should have gap between it and the wall on one side. This would give us easy access the either side without having to go outside to get to the other end.”

“That would work but the horses may tear up the bales.”

“So let’s cover their side with a tarp. As to the gap, we could use one of the gates. Surely, we can figure out a way to anchor it to the bales and the wall.” After a moment she added, “The bales should probably be two wide for better stability.”

“Sounds to me like that will work. As to the tack, I don’t think we should lay it on the floor.”

“Well, we could use the hay bales. Say lay them two wide with an aisle between them and cover them with a tarp. That would make it easier to access the tack.”

“I like that. Perhaps we should make the rows three bales wide.”

“If we do that, you could only access the tack from one side.”

“Oh, you were thinking end to end. My concept was to lay them side by side. I think either will work, but let’s decide that when we have some bales in here.”

“Suits me. I wonder if we have enough hay to accomplish this.”

“Should have more than enough, if not we could bring over some of the gates. By placing ends of the gate on bales, it would reduce the number of bales needed. Whatever we use, we should cover it with a tarp.”

“Okay. That solves that issue.”

Lena nodded toward Victor who was talking to his crew and said, “It looks like they are done.”

“That it does,” replied Susan. It wasn’t long until they saw the crew begin gathering their gear.

It was a little after 10 when Victor came over to Susan and Lena and said, “As you may have guessed, our inspection is complete so as best we can tell all the fasteners were tightened to specifications. I’ve noted on the job sheet that all the loose fasteners were replaced with new ones.”

“Great,” responded both.

“Except for that one issue, I think this has been the best project I’ve been on. I hope I have the opportunity of oversee another project for you all.”

“We hope your next project is just as good,” responded Susan with Lena nodding.

As Victor headed for his vehicle, Lena said, “Based on what I’ve seen so far, we made a good choice when we chose this building.”

Susan just smiled and nodded in agreement. They watched those putting up the security devices for a bit. When they stepped out of the front of the building, on their way to their horses, Susan said, “You know what we’ve sort of overlooked.”

“Probably a lot of things,” responded Lena with a laugh. “But what now?”

“The horses may like the freedom to roam all over this field, it would be wise to limit the area.”

After mounting their horses, Susan continued, “We talked about that the other day but I don’t think we followed up on it. We really don’t need anything permanent. Just a temporary fence around this end of the building would do. Do you think a ten acre pasture would be sufficient for the short time they will be here?”

“That should be more than sufficient. When we get back, I’ll see if Kathy or Terri can go with me to town to pickup fence posts and boundary cable. Is there anything else that I need to pickup?”

“Make sure to get at least one post driver, well maybe two. I don’t remember seeing any tarps in the barn, so you should get several large tarps.”

“Well since we think we’ve figured out how to utilize the building, let’s take our morning ride.”

Looking into the building, Susan saw Caitlin looking their way, so she waved. Then with little encouragement the horses, began walking. Susan guided Dante so they would go around the north side to the new building. Their path took them some distance from the cluster of buildings then around them so that they soon approached the barn from the west side.

After taking the gear off the horses, they were released into the pasture, joining the other horses. Once the gear was stored, they headed toward the house. When they got off the elevator on the 2nd floor, Lena said, “I am going to wash up, then see if I can locate Terri or Kathy. I may see you at lunch, but if they are willing we may eat lunch in town.”

“Fine. After lunch, I may begin moving hay bales to the building.”

Later as Susan walked toward the dining room, she saw Terri and Lena enter the elevator. In the dining room, she saw Jan and waved to her. As she did she noticed that Jen, Jo, and Caitlin were with her. After selecting her lunch items, she headed toward where they were sitting. As she headed in that direction, she paused several times to answer questions about the new building.

On reaching the group with Jan, she looked at them and shook her head as she set her tray down. The group just smiled.

With a grin Jan said, “I wasn’t sure you were going to make it here before lunch was over.” Several chuckled on hearing Jan’s comment. “I think all of us were asked about the activity. One person asked if there would be a place where they could watch the stable construction.”

“I haven’t even thought about that aspect. How are you all doing with the security stuff?”

“The availability of the lifts really helped. We are almost ready to power up and test. The programming should be straight forward, so probably operational by tomorrow. So when are you going to move stuff?”

“We plan to start this afternoon. Right now Lena is off to town to get some supplies. We need to set up a boundary for a temporary pasture and a few other items.”

Caitlin noted, “We saw her leave with Terri. Lena was certainly excited.”

Jo said, “After you signed off on the building, I gather from the way you two were wandering around you were sorting out how to place the stuff from the barn.”

“A good observation. I have to admit that we were initially overthinking the situation. We did come up with a plan that we think will work.”

After a few moments, Jen said, “So can you tell us?”

Smiling she responded, “Sure.” She then outlined their plan.

When she finished Jan said, “Sounds like that will work. Do you want some assistance?”

“The more the merrier,” responded Susan with a smile as those around her laughed.

AT Ranch -

While Susan and Lena were involved with the new building, the AT ranch’s drone project for surveying their herds took a significant step forward. At the ranch headquarters, several of the tribe watched as Liam and Cathal launched a drone. As it lifted off and moved away from them, Liam and Cathal smiled when they heard several positive comments. This was the first time a drone release had an audience. Cathal had the drone go through a series of movements to confirm good control. When he was sure, he said to Liam, “I am ready to hand over control.”

“Okay. I’ll go activate the controller by the console.”

The group followed Liam and Cass as they went inside, then Liam sat down at the console. In front of him was a large display. It was showing images from the drone of scenes around their location. On an adjacent display was a map of the area. On the map was a flashing dot.

To those observing Cass said, “The flashing dot on the topo map is the drone’s current position.”

After checking a few things, Liam said to Cathal, “Okay. Ready to transfer control.”

“Transferred,” replied Cathal.

The observers then saw the drone respond as Liam moved his fingers on his controller. Several softly cheered.

Cathal soon entered and sat down next to Liam and softly said, “That went smoother than I expected.”

“I am glad that the 3Js pushed us to do all the practice. Now let’s see if we can find elements of the herd.”

As Liam directed the drone’s movement, the view on the large monitor changed. In the background, Cass quietly answered questions.

It wasn’t long before some cattle came into view. A voice behind them exclaimed, “Ah, we can really see them.” Both Liam and Cathal smiled.

With Cathal at the controls, he circled the group of cows then began expanding the circle. In doing so, more groups of cattle came into view.

A voice in the back of the room said, “It looks like one of our goals has been achieved.”

Cass added, “Achieving our other objectives will likely take some time. To me, this is somewhat akin to learning to ride then becoming comfortable doing so.”

“Good point,” responded another observer.

Over the following few minutes the observers drifted off to accomplish their tasks.

Liam said, “Lets save a couple of images of the herd before we start the survey.”

“I’ll add the herd groups to the topo map,” said Cass.

Liam asked Cass, “I gather you have some candidates in mind to do this, once we are comfortable with how it works.”

“Yes. Nituna, Ehawee, and I have several in mind. When do want us to ask them?”

“Give us a couple of days, then we can take that step.”

“Think you will have a handle on it by then.”

“Well we should have a better understanding of what it can do for us. We are fairly certain we are missing cattle. Potentially this should help us determine whether it’s true and if so help answer the question of why. If it is someone causing it, then it should help us determine who and how.”

Lone Pine -

At Lone Pine, after lunch Susan took a pickup load of bales from the barn to the steel building. She had only positioned a few when Dakota, Tricia, Anneke and Kendra entered the barn. Dakota enquired, “Would you like some assistance?”

“Sure. My focus right now is on bringing more hay over. Unfortunately, the pickup doesn’t hold many bales.”

Dakota said, “Well let’s finish unloading, then a couple of us can go get another load.”

Looking at how they were dressed, she said, “Before you do that you should put on riding clothes.” Seeing the expressions of several, she added, “It will avoid getting a lot of scratches, a pair of gloves would be a good idea. There are community clothes in the tack room.”

Kendra said, “Okay, I know where they are.”

When they had finished unloading the hay, Tricia said, “If riding clothes are like Susan is wearing, then we definitely need them when handling the hay.” With that the group climbed in the truck and headed for the barn.

Susan had positioned a few bales when she heard horses approaching. Looking out the door she saw four riders approaching. Walking to the door she recognized them as being from the Bar H. When they were close, one said, “Hello Susan. As we were riding by, we noticed all the construction equipment was gone. So since we saw a bit of activity, we thought we would stop by.”

“Well there is not much to see at the moment,” responded Susan. “You are welcome to look around.”

They dismounted and walked in to the building. The rider said, “I am AJ. We met at the accident involving the Hawkins. With me are Larry, Wade, and Johnson.” Each nodded as they were introduced.

“Nice of you all to stop by. You are welcome to look around although there is not much to see.”

Johnson said, “Sure is a big building. What are you going to use it for?”

Laughing Susan responded, “It is that. In fact it is about twice the size that we set out to purchase. However, we got a deal we couldn’t pass up. As to use, we purchased it primarily to store hay and feed.”

“This will hold a lot of hay,” added Wade.

“Yea, likely more than twice what we will need for a year.” After a moment she added, “Guess you haven’t heard. This building is just the first of three we are adding. The current barn will soon be replaced with a stable. Near it will be an arena. We are doing all of this cause a couple of us are expanding the horse activity. In the past, the availability of horses has been to provide riding excursions for the residents. While continuing to do that, we are shifting that aspect a bit to be more like a horse farm. So soon we will be breeding, raising and training them. The barn needs to go cause it really is unsuitable for this change in use.”

As she finished speaking Tricia pulled up with a load of hay. On exiting the truck, the group with Tricia all said, “Hello.”

“Hello,” responded the wranglers. Susan then introduced everyone.

AJ looked at the others, then said, “We’ll help you unload the hay.”

Susan hesitated, then smiled said, “That would be much appreciated. However how we want to place them will likely seem strange. We are setting up to bring over the stuff from the barn. So we will be using part of the building as shelter for the horses and the rest for our gear. To do that we are going to use a part of the hay to partition the building. This end will be for the horses.”

“Okay. Just tell us where you want the bales,” responded Larrry.

Johnson said, “How many bales are there?”

Anneke responded, “I would guess at least a hundred.”

“Well let’s make this a bit easier, I’ll go get the flat bed.”

“Good idea,” responded AJ.

“So I will you meet you all at the barn when I return,” he said as he headed toward his horse.

As he rode away, Tricia returned to the truck and backed it inside. They had just finished unloading the hay and placing the bales appropriately, when Terri and Lena drove up. In the back of the pickup were the supplies for putting up the temporary fence along with several tarps.

After introducing AJ, Larry, and Wade, Susan noted that they were from Bar H. She noted that another had gone to get a flat bed truck which would make moving the hay easier.

Lena said, “While we are waiting, we could put the fencing supplies in the building by the door.”

When they walked over to the pickup and saw the contents Wade said, “How big of a pasture were you going to set up?”

“Well we bought sufficient supplies to fence ten acres,” responded Lena.

“How many horses?”

“Eleven. No make that fifteen, as four more are arriving this weekend.”

“How long will you be using the pasture?”

“Probably no more than five weeks.”

“Well if it was me, I wouldn’t fence more than 5 acres. If it is not enough, with this style fencing you can easily move the boundary.”

“Thank you. So that is, what we will do.”

They had the pickup unloaded when several saw a truck coming down the lane. AJ said, “That looks like Johnson.” On hearing that the group rode over to meet him at the barn. By the time they reached the barn, he had the truck backed up to the door and he and Miria were standing beside it.

They began loading hay after Miria and Johnson were introduced to Tricia, Dakota, Anneke, and Kendra. It didn’t take them long to load half of the remaining hay. Back at the new building, Susan guided the placement of the bales being used to divide the building.

Just as they finished unloading the truck, Marcy pulled up. As she exited the pickup she said, “I brought drinks.”

“Hurray,” responded several.

She had brought several choices and everyone soon had a drink. Seeing a few bales scattered around the other end of the building Miria asked, “Why are the bales over there?”

Susan responded, “They are marking the areas where we want to put down a single layer of bales. That is where we plan to place the tack from the barn, well after we cover the hay with a tarp. Fortunately we only have a little grain on hand. That we can place in five gallon pails.”

“Now that is a neat solution. It appears that the horses will have access to the pasture all the time. If you need one, we have a small water tank you can borrow.”

Lena frowned then smiled as she responded, “We will take you up on that, as that is something else we’ve overlooked.”

Several smiled as they made remarks indicating having had similar experiences.

When they finished their refreshments, several went to get the rest of the hay. Those remaining assisted Susan in covering the divider with tarps. When the truck returned with the last of the hay, it was unloaded using the back entrance. Once they had all the bales unloaded and positioned, they were covered with the new tarps Lena had purchased.

Looking around AJ said, “What next?”

Susan said, “I am inclined to call it a day. The remaining tasks are to empty the barn of the gear and setup the boundary for the temporary pasture.”

“So what time are you starting in the morning?” inquired AJ, getting a nod and a smile from Miria.

“About 8:30 or so.”

“And we will have plenty of coffee,” added Dakota.

“We will be here, with perhaps a few more,” responded AJ.

As the Bar H group walked to their horses, Wade said, “Is the post driver on the tractor?”

“It was the other day,” responded Larry. “I’ll drive it over in the morning.”

Johnson said, “Let’s bring it over on the trailer, as I am sure we can use another truck or two.”

“Good idea,” responded several.

In the truck Johnson said, “Do you know what is behind their horse ranch project?”

Miria smiled, “Both Lena and Susan are quite knowledgeable about horse riding and training. If both haven’t ridden competitively I would be surprised. Lena has a degree in animal husbandry and most likely grew up on a farm or ranch. Susan has a lot of experience riding and caring for horses, which I think was before she went to college. I believe she has a degree in computer science and statistics.”

“You know this or it is your reading of the tea leaves.”

“Well, a bit of both. Based on what I saw today and I think you guys did as well. My impression is that they are little short on knowledge of the daily details. So I would like to quietly assist them in their endeavor. I suspect it will benefit us as well.”

“It was an enjoyable afternoon.”

Smiling she inquired, “Cause they are easy on the eyes?”

“That they are,” he responded as several chuckled. “But, I was referring to how we interacted.”

A voice from the backseat said, “I agree.”

After closing the building up, Susan rode Dante back to the barn as the others rode over in pickups. Once she had Dante unsaddled and the gear put away, she looked through the barn. In doing so, she took note of the things that still need to be moved. Except for a few sacks of grain, it was essentially all in the tack room.

Back in her suite Susan checked her email. There was a note from Tracey, letting her know that they had picked up the project report. There were some aspects of it that they needed to go back over carefully, but it looked like a fine piece of work. Once they had reviewed it, they would likely have some questions. Susan smiled as that was what she had anticipated.

As she was letting her milk down then taking a shower, she thought about the day’s activities. She was surprised by and thankful for the Bar H people showing up then offering to assist them. She could see now that without their assistance, they would have had difficulty moving all the stuff by themselves in the time they had alloted.

On entering the dining room she saw Dakota wave, so she headed toward their table. They were soon joined by Lena, Kendra, Anneke, and Terri. Once they had made their dinner selections, Susan said, “So, how was your visit to town?”

“Great. We had a nice lunch at a place Terri picked out. I think it was where you ate. The food was quite good. The staff was very friendly. However, I am glad that I got plenty of exercise this afternoon. As to the farm supply store, no problems. I told them what our need was, and the counterwoman put it together. She assured me that if there was any extra to bring it back. If it was packaged then preferably unopened. Incidentally, there were several women working the counter and the yard.”

“So not self service?”
