12th Tuesday – Lone Pine -

As Susan walked back to her suite after exercising, she thought about what to wear. She decided that what she wore when horseback riding should be appropriate. As she selected her skirt, the idea of wearing her orb cross her mind. After a bit decided to pass although the idea gave her a warm feeling. She had just finished dressing when the phone rang.

After picking up the handset she said, “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” replied Marcy. “I believe Liam has just entered the lane.”

“Great. I’ll be right down.”

Susan then called Kathy. When she answered, Susan said, “Good morning. I believe our friends from the AT Ranch will be here shortly.”

“Okay,” responded Kathy. “I’ll be at the front door in a few minutes with a pickup.”

Shortly after Susan stepped out the front door, Kathy pulled up in a crew cab pickup. When Kathy exited, Susan said, “I never noticed the ranch name on the vehicles before.”

“Probably cause there usually isn’t a name on the vehicle. This is a stick on. Since we are going into Sheridan on ranch business, adding the sign seemed appropriate.”

Just then Liam pulled up. As greetings were exchanged Liam introduced Cass to Kathy. Once they were on there way down the lane, Liam asked, “Do you want to stop for breakfast on the way in?”

Susan’s stomach rumbled. After the laughter subsided Cass noted, “It sounds like we should.” Her comment led to more laughter as Susan blushed.

Liam said, “There is a nice place to eat on our way to Sheridan County Equipment. It is the Southside diner.”

“That is a good choice,” noted Kathy.

“Fine with me,” responded Susan. “This will be my first time to Sheridan.”

“Really?” responded Cass.

“Well perhaps it is more accurate to say that it will be the first time when I am awake.”

It wasn’t long before they arrived at the diner. The parking lot was quite full. When they entered the diner they were promptly seated. Susan noted that their presence didn’t draw any attention, like it did in Casper. Then she thought it might because she was the only stranger.

As they were finishing breakfast Susan said, “This was a good choice. Shall we go see about the equipment?”

When they entered Sheridan County Equipment, Kathy stayed near the entry. Susan, Cass, and Liam walked on up to the counter. At the counter, Susan laid her list on the counter. Although their was little activity, several minutes passed before one of the younger men came over.

“Good morning. I am Ian. How can I help you?”

“We would like to rent the equipment on this list. We need it delivered to the site before the 15th.”

“How long will you need it?”

“About six weeks.”

“Okay. I may not have exactly what you have on the list, but what is offered would do the same task. Where will we need to deliver the equipment?”

“Lone Pine Ranch out on Route AB.”

“How would you be paying for it?”

“This is the account number,” she replied as she handed him a card.

“Let me check the schedule to see what is available.” With that Ian took the list and went into an office. He was only in there a few moments, when they heard several people talking. After a bit, they heard a loud voice say, “Listen up kid, we don’t have any equipment available. Now go out there and get rid of them. We don’t need any business from their kind.”

Ian returned to the counter as he started to speak, Susan said, “We heard. Could I have my list back?”

Blushing he said, “Sorry,” as he handed the list back. As he did, Susan, Liam, and Cass saw a man standing in the office door with an angry expression.

On receiving the list back Susan said to Ian with a smile, “Thank you. Have a nice day.”

Their group quietly walked back to their truck. Once inside Liam said, “Welcome to the tribe.” Then there was an oof due to Cass elbowing him.

“Well I would rather be associated with you all than with that jackass. So Kathy let’s see what happens at Abernathy Equipment.”

Smiling Kathy responded, “Well since I’ve met a couple of their staff, it should be different.”

Cass said, “I think the loud mouth was that of Marvin Waltz the owner.”

Kathy responded, “And he has a son named Charlie, who was severely injured in an accident on AB not long ago. It was an accident that several of us barely missed being included.”

“Was this the accident due to a phantom truck?”

“Yep.”

“So may be his attitude wasn’t due to our appearance.”

Liam added, “Well, Brian has had difficulty renting equipment from them.”

A few moments later they pulled up in front of Abernathy Equipment. Its appearance wasn’t nearly as polished.

On entering the building, they heard a loud voice say, “Good morning, Kathy.”

They turned toward the voice, then Kathy said, “Good morning, Anthony. It is good to see you.”

“Did you come to set up another date?” he responded with a big smile.

“Well that is a possibility. But, my friends need to rent some equipment.” With that Kathy introduced Susan, Liam, and Cass. In doing so she noted that Susan was the lead.

As they were exchanging greetings, Will and Lars came out to the counter. During the expanded greetings, there were more hints about dates. During the exchange Kathy gave a brief description of their evening out after they had left.

“Well we are glad you avoided being caught up in it,” responded Anthony with Lars and Will nodding in agreement.

Lars said, “Susan, what is the project? And what are you seeking to rent?”

“We’ve hired Brian’s group to tear down a pole barn. This is the list of equipment that will be needed.”

As the three looked over the list, Anthony asked, “How soon do you need it? And how long?”

“Brian plans to start the tear down on the 15th. The tear down is expected to be done by the end of the week. However, work will begin on the 23rd to erect a stable in the same location. As his group is assisting with some aspects of the stable construction, he would like for some of the equipment to remain until the stable and arena are completed. The longer term items are noted.”

“So this could be as long as five weeks.”

Lars, Anthony, and Will then began comparing their equipment rental schedule and available equipment, with what was on the list. Some thirty minutes later, Lars said, “We can do it, with one condition. We may need to switch out some of the equipment. If we do, we will replace it with a unit suitable to your needs.”

Susan looked at Liam and Cass. They both nodded their agreement.

Will asked, “Who is building your stable?”

“Best Build Custom Stables.”

“Interesting, we have a request for quote from them for the same time frame. Can we tell them what equipment we will have at Lone Pine?”

“Sure. I believe Best Built Custom Stables has hired Brian’s group to put in the foundation.”

Anthony inquired, “How do you want to do the billing?”

“I understand that an account has been setup for Lone Pine. This is the account number.”

After a moment he said, “Found it. The credit line is more than enough to cover this. We will bill you weekly for the equipment charges. The equipment rate is per day. Periodically a service truck will visit the site to do routine maintenance.”

“We will let our staff know.”

A few minutes later Lars handed Susan a list of the equipment they were renting that showed the rental rate, start date and probable end date.

Will inquired, “Would it be okay to deliver the equipment first thing on Monday the 15th?”

Susan looked at Liam, who replied, “That should be fine. When we see Brian, I’ll confirm that with him.”

“Great. Thank you all for coming to us.”

As they were shaking hands, Kathy said, “I’ll check with Jan regarding getting together again. Would Saturday work?”

“Ahh...” responded Will, “next Saturday would be even better?”

“Okay. I’ll check and let you know.”

As they exited Abernathy Equipment, Kathy said, “Where to next?”

Cass said, “Since we are in town, could we stop by a clothing store?”

“Now that would be interesting,” responded Susan. “Are you looking for practical or dressy? When we were in Casper, we went to a store that had very nice practical clothes.”

“By practical, do you mean appropriate for where we live?” inquired Cass.

“Yes. With some fancy enough to wear to dinner.”

“I know of a place where I think you will like the selection.”

“I am game.”

Kathy said, “Where too?” Cass then gave Kathy directions.

As they left the clothing store Cass said, “I noticed that you only bought skirts and pants.”

Kathy looked at Susan, then Susan said, “The jackets we wear contain bust support. I find them to be much more comfortable than wearing a typical bra.”

“They give you sufficient support?” she responded.

“They seem too.”

“Sorry for the way I responded.”

“If you want, I’ll see if I have a jacket your size. Liam you’ve been awfully quiet.”

Smiling he replied, “While the conversation has been interesting, I thought I would limit my comments to how you all looked wearing your selections. I thought you all made some very good choices.” Hearing his response the ladies grinned.

Kathy said, “Do we want to eat lunch now or wait until we are back at Lone Pine?”

Cass said, “Why don’t we treat you all to lunch? There is a nice place not too far ahead.”

They were finishing lunch, when Ian came up to their table. “Excuse me. I found this morning quite embarrassing. I hope you were able to rent the equipment you needed.”

“We did.”

Cass added, “Your interaction with us was excellent.” Susan, Liam and Kathy nodded indicating their agreement.

“Thank you. Have a great day.”

“You as well,” they responded.

Back at Lone Pine as they exited the truck Susan said to Liam, “Let me make a copy of the rental agreement for Brian.”

“It might be better for you to give it to him the next time you see him.”

“Okay. I really appreciate you all going with me on this adventure and showing us a place to eat and buy good clothes. Cass, I’ll see if we have a jacket your size.”

“You don’t have to do that. I have to admit I do like the way they fit you all.”

They gave each other a hug before Cass and Liam departed. As they watched them drive down the lane, Kathy said, “A nice couple.” Susan just smiled and nodded.

In the truck Liam said, “While I enjoyed our morning with them, I am still puzzled by Susan asking us go along. One time she alluded to the fact that the rental people wouldn’t take her seriously and may try to scam her.”

“Remember Susan is new to the area. All the residents and activities at the ranch are new to her. So the environment she is in now is very different. She impresses me. I was impressed with how she handled the first attempt to rent equipment. At Abernathy, it helped that Kathy knew the staff. I have the impression that the staff went out of their way to ensure that the equipment was available when needed. Another aspect of the two events is that Abernathy will soon have more business.”

“Why do you say that? Although, I agree that Abernathy doesn’t appear to be doing as well as Sheridan.”

“Cause how Sheridan handled Susan, will put some people off and word will get around. Besides the son is a jerk.”

“So I’ve heard. I have to admit that I’ve enjoyed interacting with those I’ve met at Lone Pine. Their assistance and guidance in setting up the drones has been a blessing. I am not sure we could have done it on our own, if we had thought of it.”

“Oh, I think you all could have done it without their assistance. It would likely have taken longer, been more frustrating, and more expensive. You should invite them to our next celebration.”

“Oh, wow. I will.”

“You should also take a few of them out to dinner and perhaps dancing. I think Susan and Lena would like that.”

“Sounds like match making,” responded Liam with a laugh.

“That is what sisters do. As friends, I see the three of you complimenting each other with your individual strengths.”

Susan smiled as she said to Kathy, “Sister and brother. I don’t know who is the older one. I am glad you were along. Especially since you knew the guys at Abernathy.”

“That was a nice coincidence,” she replied as she entered the truck. “See you later.”

On entering the building, Susan paused to make a couple of copies of the rental contract. Then gave a copy to Kim. When she did, she ended up telling Kim a bit about their adventure including the shopping.

In her suite, she changed into more casual clothes. As she did, she wondered what Cass reaction would be if she knew how few clothes they wore. She tried on her new clothes again, and checked how they looked with her other jackets. With a satisfied smile, she put her name on the new clothes, then added them to the laundry bag with her other dirty clothes then sat it beside the door.

Next she checked the progress of the data analysis. She pumped a fist when she saw it was complete with no errors. But it would have to wait, as she needed to call Lena.

When Lena answered, she said, “Great you are back. Do you still want to go over the list of equipment we need for the horses?”

“That is why I called. Your place or mine.”

“Why don’t we do it there. This morning I completed a list of what we have on hand. I was a little surprised as we are in pretty good shape on most things. Okay to come right over?”

“Sure. While waiting I’ll slip out so I can send my dirty clothes to the laundry.”

“Thanks for reminding me. I need to do that as well.”

After giving Susan a hug along with an intense kiss, Lena inquired, “So how was you trip to town?”

“Interesting. I am glad that Liam, Cass and Kathy were with me.” She then gave a brief review of their visits to the two equipment rental places. The places where they ate were noted but the visit to the clothing store was more detailed. “The selection of clothes was as nice as we saw in Casper, however I don’t think the variety today was as large.”

“Since we are going off the ranch more frequently, we will need to increase the variety of clothes we wear.”

“Yea, I am not too keen on sitting bare assed in places other than here. I have to admit that I do like going bare ass most of the time, especially when riding horses.”

“Well I partially agree with you. As to sitting bare ass on the seat, I don’t think we do, except for horse back riding. That is because when we are out and about, our skirts are longer and hide our bare ass.”

“Good point.” After a pause, Susan added, “Guess I didn’t think that through. Now I wonder why I thought there was a problem. Anyway, shall we begin?”

“If we must, we must, slave driver.” After sticking her tongue out, Lena added, “This is what I’ve compiled.”

Together they went down the list comparing what was on hand with what was recommended. As they did, they made notations of the additional items they should acquire. Afterword, in looking over their notations, Lena said, “It looks like most of the items are what I would call spares.”

“I agree. The items I think we are short on are bridles, stirrups, reins and grooming tools. By the way what do we do for a farrier.”

“I believe they come from Sheridan. They come about every six week or so. Those arrangements were setup before I became involved in caring for the horses. Let me call Kim.” She was frowning when she hung up the phone. “Kim said that according to their billing they were here last week. However, I don’t remember seeing them.”

“Well when I looked at Dante’s hooves this morning, they looked fine. However, there was no indication that they had had any attention since he arrived. At dinner we can ask the others who frequent barn, if they have seen the farrier.” After a moment she added, “Well it would be much simpler to check with the Security Center.”

Lena laughed, “Glad you thought of that, as I am not sure I would have.”

A few moments later Susan heard Deanne say, “Security Center. Good afternoon, Susan.”

“Good afternoon, Deanne. How are things?”

“Pretty normal except for the activity around the new building. What’s up?”

“Can you tell me the last time the farrier was here?”

“Sure, it will just take a moment.” While Susan waited, she realized that the visitor log must be in a database.

After a moment Deanne said, “It was a little over 6 weeks ago.”

“Okay, thanks.” Turning to Lena, “It was a little over six weeks ago. I guess we should call them to find out why.”

After getting the phone number from Kim, they called it. The response was a recording indicating the number was out of service. Both said some unkind words.

Lena called Kim and advised her that the number was no longer in service. After a moment Kim said, “In looking at the invoice again, I see that it is for services rendered in March. Sorry I didn’t catch that when you called earlier.”

Lena replied, “Well it looks like we now need to find a farrier.”

“If I remember correctly we had difficulty finding one when we hired them. Do you need me to search for one?”

“Would you mind if Susan and I resolved this?”

“You’ve got to be kidding. I shall give you both a hug next time I see you as it is one less task for me. Besides I don’t know very much about that topic. Let me know the particulars, so I can set up an account.”

“Oh, we will. See you at dinner.” Looking over at Susan she said, “Well it looks like finding a farrier has been added to our to do list.”

“I think our first step should be to ask the Hawkins and Liam who they use. Maybe someone on their staff does it.”

“Since it appears to be more than six weeks, we should check with them tomorrow. Hopefully, it won’t be difficult to find one.”

“We need to put up a task list in the barn, with a way to note when a task is done and who did it. It would hopefully avoid something like this in the future.”
