12th Friday – Lone Pine -

When the chime sounded, Susan reached up to silence it. As she did, she noticed the time and was a bit puzzled. It was then she remembered that she needed to let her milk down. By taking care of that task before Tai Chi, it seemed fit better with her other morning activities.

After returning from letting her milk down, Susan checked the progress of the data set analysis. The progress bar had moved significantly. After considering it for a bit, she decided that it would likely be tomorrow before it finished. Then she remembered the commitment to go horseback riding tomorrow and decided that work on the analysis could wait until afterward.

She arrived in the gym early enough to greet everyone. When she heard the chime, she moved to her lead position. After a few moments the music began, prompting her to began going through the forms. This morning she changed the sequence slightly and was pleased to see that no one was caught off guard. Afterward, as she walked with Lena to the swimming pool, Lena said, “That was an interesting change in the sequence.”

“Well it sort of slipped in. I was pleased to see that everyone responded smoothly.”

“Well I sort of did and I think you caught Janet off guard too.”

“Changing sequence does have some benefits as it changes the order you are stretching your muscles”

“Good point. So you plan to do that more often.”

“Well, likely, when I remember. I enjoyed our time yesterday.”

“I did as well,” responded Lena as they dived into the pool.

As they were getting out of the pool, Jan said to Susan, “Do you have a moment?”

“Sure. What’s up?”

“The contractors are arriving and we want to monitor their arrival.”

“Well, we will likely go out to the site after breakfast.”

“You might want to ride out rather than walk.”

“Suits me,” responded both Susan and Lena with smiles.

After breakfast as they were walking to the barn Lena said, “I gather you let your milk down before breakfast?”

“Yes. Before Tai Chi. It took a little longer than I anticipated.”

“As it becomes more routine, it won’t take as long. Well that was true for me. So how is the analysis coming?”

“Well it looks like it will complete some time tomorrow but could be longer. In any case, I am still going riding tomorrow.”

“Good.”

It wasn’t long before they were on horseback, and headed toward the construction site. As they approached the site, they saw Brian and Liam talking to a gentleman. On seeing Susan and Lena, Liam waved.

Taking the wave as an invitation, they rode over to him. On reaching them, they said, “Good morning.”

After they dismounted, Liam said, “Susan, Lena, this is Victor Wilde. He is the project superintendent. Victor, Susan and Lena are the driving force behind the building you are assembling.”

He said, “Good morning, Ladies,” as they shook hands. “Nice horses.”

“Thank you,” responded both. Lena and Susan then gave Liam and Brian a hug which elicited a smile from Victor.

Susan said, “We just came over to see if everything was proceeding smoothly and to answer any questions.”

“So far, everything is as expected but it is early in the day. I heard that you all had a viewing site when the foundation was being put in. However, I didn’t see a location marked for one.”

“Well we moved it to the second floor of the building,” responded Lena. “We felt the view from there would provide a better view and be safer. While it is a bit further away, by it being higher up they will have, I think, a better overall view.”

“I agree. However, based on some comments, I’ve heard, I think some of the crew will be disappointed. Which is fine with me.”

There was a loud bang causing all four of them to jump. Liam and Brian’s horses moved away from them and looked around nervously. While Dante and Cedar, looked around but at the same time monitored their riders response. Brian and Liam both picked up the reins for their horses.

Susan inquired, “I know it is early, but think you will be done by Thursday.”

“Presuming the weather holds, yes. It could be early Thursday.”

“Excellent. We will likely be out a couple of times each day. If you need us in a hurry, I think you have our phone number. Alternatively, just go to the front entrance, and you can have someone find us.”

They said good bye to Victor and walked off a bit with the horses following. A short distance away, Susan said to Brian and Liam, “I presume we are still on to arrange for the needed rental equipment on Monday.”

Brian looked at Liam then said, “I wouldn’t go any later than that. I’ll have Liam email you the equipment list which includes descriptions.”

Liam said, “It would be easier for me to do it on Tuesday morning first thing. I think they open at 7. Considering what we need, the work could start without the equipment being on site.”

“Great. I’ll do a little web surfing to learn a bit more. Liam are you accompanying me?”

“I am looking forward to doing so. I am fairly certain Cass will join us. We’ll be at your place a little before 7. That way we can have breakfast in town.”

“Do you work together a lot?”

Smiling he replied, “Yes, for a long time, as she is my sister. A slightly older one.”

With that they all mounted their horses. Liam and Brian waved as they turned their horses toward their ranch. Lena and Susan returned the wave, then watched the activity around the site for a few moments, before heading for the stable.

“So at least one of us should visit the site each morning and after lunch.”

“Well except for Tuesday, that will work for me,” responded Susan.

At dinner, Susan and Lena met with those who had indicated an interest in a horseback ride on Saturday. They decided to depart at 9 and to take a lunch with a planned return mid afternoon.

12th Saturday – Lone Pine -

When Susan and Lena came down for breakfast, they wore their riding clothes. As they were eating, those going on the outing, made sure to let them know they were still going. Crystal told them that Lana and her would bring lunches for all of them. Kendra noted that they needed to bring several pairs of portable breast pumps.

As they were saddling their horses, Lena noted, “It is a good thing there are only six going with us.”

“Why is that? There are several more horses that we aren’t riding.”

“Ah ... but we only have two more saddles.”

“Well if someone really wants to go, I’ll ride bare back.”

“The only problem would be carrying a weapon and stuff.”

“I think, if necessary, I could find a solution.”

With a laugh she replied, “Okay, I give.”

They had just finished preparing Dante and Cedar when Crystal, Kendra, Caitlin, Erin, Siobhan and Lana joined them. Lena smiled on seeing them arrive. Crystal and Caitlin sat the lunches down by the barn door.

Crystal said to Lena, “I guess we should put on our riding clothes before saddling the horses.”

“That would be the way I would do it. It is warm enough that we won’t need drovers coats but you may want a jacket. Sun screen would be a good idea.”

“I’ll bring some. Once we are dressed, we will bring the saddles, blankets, and bridles out with us.”

“Great, thanks.”

When they returned Lena said, “Now there is a horse’s name on each saddle, so take the one you are carrying along with its gear over next to that horse. Once there if you need assistance raise your hand and either Susan or I will come assist you.”

Once the horses were all saddled, Lena said, “Due to where we live, when we ride, we go armed. Generally each rider is armed with a rifle and a revolver or pistol. Why? Cause we may have a confrontation with a varmint. Revolver or pistols are good for dealing with snakes. We have enough for each of you to carry a revolver. Why a revolver? Because the ones we carry are loaded with birdshot which is very effective in dealing with snakes. Now, if you haven’t fired a weapon before, we will take care of that when we are away from the buildings and the cattle. Any questions?”

By the time all the preparations were completed, it was approaching 9 o’clock. When they exited the barn Susan said to Lena, “Why don’t you take point and I’ll take drag?”

“So you are okay with going west over the ridge then at some point swinging around to the south.”

“That is fine. Before we start up the side of the ridge, we should give everyone an opportunity to fire the revolvers.”

“I know a good spot to do that.”

With that Lena headed west across the canyon and everyone following with most riding side by side. Kendra dropped back to ride alongside of Susan. Lena led them on zig zag path across the pasture to avoid groups of cattle.

On reaching the trees, they traveled a short distance in to them before stopping near a bluff with a small cavern. When Susan saw where they were stopping she contacted the Security Center and asked if they were monitoring them. They quickly confirmed that they were. Susan then advised that they were pausing so that several could become acquainted with using the revolvers.

Meanwhile Lena and Crystal had checked to make sure the area was clear. Finding it was, Lena began instructing the group on how to use the revolvers. After everyone had fired several rounds and reloaded, she noted that they would need to clean their weapons when they returned.

Once they were back on their horses, Susan notified the Security Center that they were continuing their ride.

Once over the ridge Lena led them in a direction that was a little north of due west. When they were well away from the ridge she slowly shifted their direction toward the south. While they had taken several breaks, it was right at noon when they reached a nice spot to have lunch. As they were eating, several ask if they could switch horses. Lena assured them that they could.

Erin said to Lena, “I noticed that Susan hardly touches the reins. While you use them a bit more, but not as much as the other experienced riders.”

Lena looked at Susan and nodded for her to respond. “To me it depends on how you view and interact with your horse. Is he a tool for you to use to complete your tasks? Or is he your pardner to help you complete your tasks? There is a subtle difference, but I think a significant one. My statements noted the two extremes. A man or woman and their horse are a team. How well they understand and interact with each other shows in how well they complete their tasks. I hope that assessment helps.”

“I think so,” responded Erin. “I’ll ponder it a bit, but I may have more questions.”

“Another thing to consider, is that when I ride other horses, I will likely use the reins more than I do with Dante. How much, depends on how well we understand each other. Sometimes that understanding comes quickly but not always. As you know some humans require a lot of guidance, well the same is true for horses.”

“After lunch, several switched horses each time they took a break. It was approaching 3 when they rounded the southern edge of the ridge and could see Lone Pine. They rode south, until they reached the lane, then turned toward home.

On reaching the barn Susan said, “While I enjoyed the ride, it is good to be home.”

“That it is,” responded several.

It was near dinner time before the horses were all taken care of, the gear cleaned and stored. As they walked through the tunnel to the elevator, several commented on various things they had seen. Everyone indicated to Lena that they would like to do an outing like that again but not right away.

Later Lena and Susan had just sat down to dinner when Jen approached. She said, “Mind if I join you.”

“No, we welcome your company,” replied Susan with Lena nodding.

After ordering Jen inquired, “How was the ride?”

Lena replied, “Everyone seemed to be very pleased with the outing and interested in doing it again. Now how they feel tomorrow is another question, as it will take that long for the sore muscles to become apparent.”

“Interesting. After our ride, I wasn’t sore. However, that was not the case when I went riding before. One difference is that I exercise more now than I did at that time.”

“That could be the reason.”

12th Sunday – Lone Pine -

Shortly after Susan returned to her room after breakfast, the phone rang. On answering she said, “Hello, this is Susan.”

“Good morning Susan. This is Donna Hawkins.”

“Good morning. What can I do for you?”

“When we visited before, you indicated that we could visit again. Well Ann and Carie have been pestering us to visit you all.”

“We would be pleased to see you all again. When would you like to come over?”

“Well today would work well for us, if that works for you all. We usually take Sunday as a day to relax.”

“So how about early afternoon, and plan on staying for dinner.”

“This afternoon would be fine. I hesitate to commit to staying for dinner.”

“So anytime after 1 would be fine. Why don’t we leave staying for dinner as an option.”

“Okay. See you then.”

After she hung up, Susan wondered if she should have checked with Madeline first. She dialed Madeline. When she answered, “Good morning Madeline. This is Susan.”

“Good morning. What’s up?”

“Well we are going to have visitors this afternoon. Donna Hawkins called asking if they could visit. It seems that Ann and Carie have been pestering them to visit us again.”

Laughing Madeline replied, “Great. When?”

“After 1. I did extend an invitation for them to stay for dinner, but no commitment was made.”

“I suspect whether they do or not likely depends on how the children do. They are likely to run out of energy well before dinner. Well those of that age, that I’ve been around would.”

“I thought of that as a possibility. But, also that it was because, we haven’t interacted with them to any great extent.”

“Good point. So we shall see. Who do you expect to join you?”

“I was going to let Lena and Jen know. When others hear of their visit I suspect they will join us. In particular Erin and Caitlin. I suspect the children are interested in doing stuff in the gym. So after greeting them, I thought we could hang out in the Common area or the gym.”

“So you want to make it easy for them to meet more of us.”

“Well ... I thought the Common area would provide an atmosphere similar to a family room.”

“Now that is an association, I hadn’t thought of, but a good one. Well I think you have it well in hand, so have fun.”

Susan looked at the phone after Madeline hung up, a bit puzzled by how the call ended. She wondered if she should have invited her to participate.

Susan then sent Lena and Jen a text message informing them of the afternoon visitors. With that taken care of, she turned her attention to the data analysis that had completed during the night. After making some adjustments in the parameters, she relaunched the program. She then turned her attention to another data set. It wasn’t long after that when the chime sounded, reminding her that it was time to let her milk down then go to lunch.

After Susan selected her lunch items, she looked around the dining room, as she considered were to sit. Erin waved to her, so she headed in that direction. On reaching the table, she said, “Good afternoon. Have room for one more?”

Erin smiled, “For you always. Enjoying your Sunday.”

“Well sort of as this morning I was reviewing an analysis. The results were good, but I decided to run it again with slightly different conditions. However, this afternoon looks like it will be a fun time.”

“How so?”

“Well if you haven’t heard the children from the Bar-H are coming to visit.”

“Cool. We interacted with them a bit when Lena brought them to the gym.”

Smiling Susan said, “I suspect the children are looking for some one with whom to interact.”

“Hmm ... think they are old enough for volley ball.”

“Perhaps in the pool.”

“Good point.”

It was a little after 1:30 when Deanne advised Susan that the visitors would soon be there. Susan, Lena, and Madeline were waiting at the entrance when the Hawkins drove up. They had hardly stopped when the children began emerging from their SUV.

The children ran toward them. Sensing their intent Susan and Lena knelt down. When the children reached them, they gave Susan and Lena a hug. It lasted for a few moments, then they stepped back so they could switch. When Susan and Lena stood up, they received hugs from Donna, Miria, and Samuel, which surprised them. Madeline was surprised by the friendliness of the greeting and being included.

Lena asked the children, “Do you want to see the horses?”

Shyly Ann responded, “We were hoping that we could go swiming.”

“We can do that. Did you bring your swim suits?”

“We didn’t think we needed them as when we were her before we noticed that the swimmers were not wearing suits.”

Donna, Miria, and Samuel looked a bit embarrassed, while both Lena and Susan were smiling.

Hoping to pull their chain, Lena asked, “So you just came to use the pool?”

“We came to see you all,” quickly and firmly responded Ann.

“Yes,” added Carie, “and we hoped we could go swimming as our pool isn’t ready yet. Grandpa says it is still to cold.”

Donna said softly to Susan, “I didn’t realize that was their intent.”

Susan responded, “Well, I think it is cute. They seem to have recovered well from the accident.”

“Yes. I think better than we have. They’ve kept us on our toes, so time to think about what might have been is very rare.”

As they were talking, they followed Lena holding Ann, and Carie’s hands into the building. On reaching the Common area, Lena turned to the group and said, “How do we want to do this? It will be noisy in the gym so chatting may be difficult. You all are welcome to swim with us as well. Alternatively, you can visit here, while we have fun swimming. We do have a locker room where you can hang up your clothes.”

Donna responded, “Why don’t you all go ahead and swim. We may join you in a bit.”
