11th Monday – Lone Pine -
It was late afternoon when Susan’s alarm alerted her that it was time for evening chores and dinner. She smiled as she had just launched the second analysis on a data set. After checking the progress bar, she stood up and stretched then went to freshen up.
After freshening up, she again checked the analysis progress then headed for the barn. When she reached the elevator she saw Lena approaching, so she held the elevator.
“Good afternoon,” said Sarah as Lena entered.
“A good afternoon to you as well,” she responded. “How did your analysis work out?”
“For a first pass, pretty good. I just started a second pass.”
“Just how many times does it take before you have a solution.”
“It varies. If there are only a few variables and it is a well behaved data set, then it goes pretty quickly. In that case a solution can be found in a day or two. That is not the case with this set of data, so I may still be looking for correlations a month from now. There will likely be several interim reports, which could result in the sponsor ending the project or adding more data.”
“Oh, I thought it would be a clear cut solution.”
Laughing Susan said, “I don’t often receive analysis projects with easy to establish correlations. When I do, it is likely due to a potential customer evaluating my skills before sending me a more complex one.”
“Well better you than me.”
“Did they pour the floor today?”
“Yes. They finished mid afternoon. They also poured the aprons for the doors.”
“I guess that they did that last.”
“They did.”
After putting the horses in their stalls, they walked over to the new building site.
Lena said, “Brian told us that concrete would be covered with plastic film to keep it from drying out too quickly. Straps will be put across it to reduce the chance of the plastic blowing away. Tomorrow they plan to roll up the plastic, flood the surface with water, then cover it again with the plastic film.”
“Well it looks enormous.”
“That it does. With all that room, it should be easy to access the hay. Too be honest, this is an aspect that I am not familiar with.”
“Well if we have excess room, we could offer to store hay for others. The Hawkins might find it convenient since it would be near the portion of their herd that is in the canyon.”
“That’s a thought. I wonder how they are doing.”
“Well based on their comments, I imagine fine,” responded Susan as they walked back to the building.
As Susan and Lena were approaching the dining room they saw Kim waving to them. They waited for her then entered the dining room together. After sitting down, Kim said, “The Trustees notified me that an account has been set up at two equipment rental businesses in Sheridan. I’ll put the details in your mail boxes.”
“Did they say why two accounts were set up?”
“Not that I remember. I advised them that we needed an account set up so we could rent construction equipment. I noted that we had an arrangement with a local contractor for removing the barn in exchange for providing the appropriate equipment. The accounts are with Abernathy Equipment and Sheridan Equipment Rentals.”
“Well even though a preference for Abernathy Equipment was indicated, I guess we should check both of them.”
Then looking at Lena, Susan said, “Once we get a list of needed equipment from Brian, we can check out their websites.”
Lena nodded indicating her agreement.
Jan said, “May we join you?”
“Sure,” they all responded.
“Anything interesting happening?” queried Susan.
“Well the alternate IR sensors arrived this afternoon,” responded Jen. “So we will check them out tomorrow night.”
Jan said, “Al, the Sheridan deputy, came by to get a formal statement on the incident Sunday morning. It seems the driver is claiming that it was our fault cause we wouldn’t let them pass. We learnt that at least two of the occupants come from well connected Sheridan families, in particular Charlie. Sensing there would be more issues from this incident, we decided that it would be wise to hire a Sheridan attorney. So with Madeline’s and the Trustee’s assistance, we have an appointment to meet with one tomorrow.”
“Not sure we know them well enough, but the Hawkins might be a resource.”
“We considered it but opted not to. Did you see that the floor is ready for the new building?”
“Yes, we went out to look after stabling the horses,” responded Lena. “Susan commented that it looks enormous and I agree.”
“I suspect it won’t be that way once the building is up and you start filling it up.”
“Ah...,” said Susan, “We need to buy hay. From what I remember, first or second cut would be preferable.”
Kim responded, “Well if was me, I would ask Liam and Mr. Hawkins.”
“Thanks, I just noted that on my to do list,” said Lena.
As they were leaving the dining room Susan said to Lena, “Care to join me for a movie?”
“Sure. That sounds like a grand idea. Did you finish the story you were reading?”
“No. I am only about half way through it.”
“I looked it up then downloaded an ePub copy. That website certainly has a wide variety of stories.”
“A lot of them are very good, then there are some ... well I think you get my point.”
“Yep.”
11th Tuesday – Lone Pine -
As Susan was checking her email, she received a phone call from Liam. After exchanging greetings, he said, “I called to let you know that the crew would be picking up their equipment this morning. However, they planned to leave the cover over the concrete until the building’s contractors arrive.”
“Thanks for letting me know.”
“I heard that there was an accident south of you on AB early Sunday.”
“Yea. Jan, Jo, and Kathy were sort of involved in one. As they were returning from an evening in Sheridan, an SUV tried to run them off the road. After they dodged that, the SUV was hit by one of those phantom trucks and totaled. I didn’t see the vehicle but from Jan description I was surprised that the occupants survived.”
“Just so you know, the relatives of the occupants could be a problem.”
“Thanks. Several others have indicated that so precautions are being taken.”
“I’ll probably be over later this week, to see if the new IR sensors are an improvement.”
“Good. See you then.”
“By the way, when are they going to start assembling the building.”
“Thursday or Friday. It is supposed to be ready to use next Thursday, the 18th.
“That sounds about right. Talk to you later.”
“Take care.” After hanging up the phone, she sent Jan an email. In it she noted that she had talked to Liam and he planned to come over later in the week.
11th Wednesday – Lone Pine -
When Susan returned to her suite after exercising, she saw the message light was flashing on her phone. On checking it, she heard, “Susan, this is Madeline. Could you meet with me after breakfast? This is to discuss whether we should continue with the viewing area when they put up the building. I’ve asked Jan, Jen, Jo, Terri, and Kathy as well.”
She called Madeline and left a message that she would be there. After leaving the message, she thought about what was behind her concern. Then like a thunderclap it dawned on her that Madeline was concerned about the increased exposure of those living here. She then chided herself for not recognizing the issue when she first saw the residents out watching the activity.
Susan had just placed her breakfast on the table when Lena joined her. After saying, “Good morning,” they gave each other a hug before sitting down.
Lena said, “I didn’t see much of you yesterday, so I gather you were immersed in your data project.”
“Immersed is a good description. I think it is time for a pause so I can reflect on what I’ve found. I will be a bit late taking care of Dante this morning.”
“Not a problem. If I haven’t seen you by the time I am close to wrapping up, I’ll take care of him and send you a note.”
“Ah...”
“It is not a problem to do it for you, as I intend to put them all out in the pasture.”
“In a way, I feel like I am taking advantage of you. As to the pasture, that is what I intended.”
“Don’t worry. You are a long way from taking advantage of me.”
“May I join you?” inquired Kendra and Crystal.
“Sure,” replied Lena and Susan.
“Now that the floor for the building is done, when will they start erecting the building?” inquired Crystal.
Susan responded, “Friday, I believe. The last I saw delivery was to be on Thursday.”
“Great,” responded both Kendra and Crystal.
Crystal added, “More free entertainment.”
Lena responded, “True. However, I think the best viewing would be from the suites on that side of the building.”
Susan responded, “Now that is an excellent suggestion.”
“I agree,” said Kendra. “I am not certain but I think two of the suites that overlook the site aren’t occupied. I’ll check with Kim to see if they can be opened up for this.”
“I would be surprised if she objects. She may want someone to oversee their use.”
“I would be willing,” responded Crystal.
“Do you know if there are any horseback outings planned?” asked Kendra.
“Well, actually I would be interested in taking one tomorrow,” responded Susan.
“Me too,” added Crystal.
“Now that I’ve said that, I think Saturday might be a better choice for me.”
“That would work for me as well,” responded Crystal.
“That actually is better for me, so I will plan on it,” noted Kendra.
“Well provided the weather is decent.”
“Well it has been good to visit with you all, but I need to open the office,” said Kendra. Seeing several puzzled expressions, she then added, “virtual office.”
“Well have a great day,” said Crystal with the others nodding in agreement.
On leaving the dining room, Susan headed for Madeline’s office, as she presumed the meeting would be there. As she approached Hall A, she saw Kim by the door to the conference room.
“Good morning, Kim. I gather we are meeting here.”
She replied with a smile, “Very perceptive of you.”
Entering the conference she saw that Jan, Jen, Kathy, Terri, and Madeline were already there. Presuming she was late, she said, “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“You haven’t as we’ve just arrived ourselves,” responded Madeline. As she was speaking, Kim entered and sat down. “Okay, I called this meeting cause I have concerns about continuing with the construction viewing area. I had concerns that I didn’t express when the foundation and floor was being done, as the workers all came from the ranch north of us or the reservation. However, the steel building contractor will be using a lot of workman from town and the surrounding area. So the question I have is, should we continue having a viewing area? If we do, and continue using the current site, then it will likely result in the community becoming more aware of who lives here.”
Jan said, “With the change in activity there, I see the current viewing area as more of safety issue than a security issue. Considering what I expect to take place, the viewing area needs to be located further from the site.”
Terri added, “As to the workman that were here for the pour, I don’t believe all of them lived on the Apsaálooke tribe’s ranch or Apsaálooke reservation. Quite a few, came from or left toward town.”
Susan said, “Well the viewing area was a topic with my group at breakfast. During it was noted that the view would likely be significantly better from the suites on that side of the building. Kendra indicated that she thought several suites on that side were vacant.”
“Now that is an excellent alternative,” responded several.
“During the discussion Kendra indicated that she planned on contacting Kim regarding whether they could be used for that purpose. In the discussion, it was noted that someone would need to be responsible for their use. My impression of Kendra is that her work keeps her quite busy. Crystal indicated that she was willing to monitor their use.”
“I agree,” noted Terry with Kathy nodding.
Kim said, “I presume, we are going forward with this.”
Everyone nodded their agreement.
“Then why don’t I do this. I’ll let Kendra and Crystal know that the empty suites can be used to view the construction area. I’ll send out a notice to the residents noting the change in location. For the suites, I’ll set access control to just note who enters, and put out a few reminders about not leaving any trash.”
Madeline added, “Solving that issue went much quicker than I anticipated. I have to admit that I was surprised by how many visited the viewing area.”
Several chuckled as Terri said, “Well it was something new and an opportunity to spend time outside as the weather was quite nice.”
“True. While we are all together, Jan have you heard any more regarding the accident?”
Jen responded, “We are not sure. The attorney we retained was of the opinion that it was all talk. We did learn from him that those in the front seat had concussions, broken legs, cracked ribs, along with a lot of bruising. As to those in the back seat, one had a concussion and a broken arm. The other had cracked ribs, a broken upper arm, and a cracked collar bone on one side. When they searched the vehicle, they found drugs. All of them, were legally intoxicated. So it should be interesting as to how this plays out. He assured us that he would let us know if he heard anything.”
“What about the phantom truck?”
“According to the deputies, it is a problem that they are aware of but they haven’t figured out a way to catch it. We are considering employing the drones to see if we can observe its activity. The goal would be to alert the sheriff of the activity so they could possibly intercept them. We received a new batch of IR sensors that have a greater sensitivity. Once we have a workable system, we will set up surveillance along AB and some of the gravel roads around us. We sort of agree with the deputies that cattle rustling is likely behind this, although it could be joy riding.”
“Okay. Just be careful.”
“We plan to. We will be working closely with the Apsaálooke tribe in doing this. We plan to discuss this effort with the Hawkins once things settle down.”
“I suspect they will be of assistance. Has anyone met any of the other neighbors?”
“Not to my knowledge,” responded Susan. “I don’t suspect we will take another ride long enough to reach them until after the building is complete. Besides the other ranches are a bit further from us. While they do lease some acreage, I don’t think any of us have interacted with their wranglers. So thinking ahead, we just may ride over there and introduce ourselves.”
“I’ll leave that in your groups hands. Has anyone heard how the Hawkins woman is doing?”
Kathy responded, “I heard she should be released this week.”
“Well that pretty well covers why I asked all of you here. Sorry for the sort notice. Are there any items we need to discuss.”
Jan said, “Well, are you and the Trustees comfortable with our interaction with the Apsaálooke tribe operating the ranch?”
“Yes. But, why the question?”
“Cause our interaction with them will likely increase. We are assisting in their acquisition of drone technology. They intend to use it to monitor their range. Susan is assisting Cass and Liam in finding suitable software that will assist them in managing their herd. Most if not all the crew that put in the foundation for storage building was from there or have a relationship with them. I suspect you know that Brian’s group will be tearing down the barn. Also they may supply the manpower to install the stable’s foundation. So, while not being native to this region, I am not fully aware of local attitudes toward Native Americans. Do you think this will be an issue with anyone?”
“Very nice tap dance,” responded Kim. “As you surmised there are a few around, who will be unhappy that they are working here. So in town, you may hear a rude comment or two, but I would be surprised if you do.”
Laughing Susan said, “So with my colouring and accompanying Liam or others, some will think I have Native American heritage.”
“From my perspective, not likely,” responded Kathy. “However, some may assume you are a member of the tribe due to who you are with.”
“Jan, to answer your question, the Trustees and I are comfortable with the growth in interaction with the Apsaálooke tribe operating the ranch. We see it as benefiting us in the long term, especially since their ranch abuts ours. By the way, do they have a name for the ranch?”
After a moment Susan responded, “All I’ve heard is AT Ranch. But, I’ll ask Cass or Liam the next time we chat.”
“Fine. So if there are no more issues, let’s be about our tasks.”
When Susan reached her suite, she checked the time. Realizing that there was time to check on Dante, before her scheduled call to Tracey and Steve, she put on a skirt. When she stepped into the barn’s aisle, she saw that Dante was still in his stall. As she walked to it, he stuck his head over the gate. Seeing her, he nickered.
“So would you like to join the others?” enquired Susan.
Dante nodded in response. She clipped a lead on his halter then led him out to the pasture gate. After entering the pasture, she unclipped the lead. He lightly nudged her before trotting off to join the others. She watched them for a few moments then walked back to the barn. As she was walking back, she wondered if she really needed to use the lead with him. On reviewing their movement from the stall to the pasture, she realized that she never really led him. He just followed her and the lead was completely slack. Next she wondered if she should test her observation.
Back in the stable, she checked the time. She then quickly cleaned Dante’s stall, then filled his hay rack and water bucket. She then headed for the elevator and back to her suite. As she started down the tunnel to the elevator, she met Lena.
Lena said, “I guess you’ve taken care of Dante.”
“Just finished. Now I am off to have my weekly virtual meeting with Tracey and Steve. The horses looked like they were enjoying being out.”
As they were talking Lena turned to accompany her to the elevator. Susan enquired, “What are your plans for the day?”
“Well I suspect I will continue reading the story you recommended. The other thing I need to do is to decide how much training the horses have had if any. Then decide how and what training to give them. Like people, some will be easier to train than others. Which is also true for the type of training.”
On exiting the elevator on the second floor Susan said, “See you at lunch.”
“Yes.”
Entering her suite, Susan looked at the clock and thought, ‘just in time.’ Sitting down at her desk, she initiated the VPN connection for the virtual meeting. After a few moments Tracey appeared on the screen.
On seeing Tracey, Susan said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” responded Tracey. “Looks like you’ve been outside.”
“Yep. I just came back from taking care of Dante. How are things with you?”
“Hectic. Steve won’t be joining us this morning.”
“I presume he is okay.”
“Oh, yes. He is in the midst of assisting a customer in sorting out an issue. So how are things out your way?”
“Well data wise, I’ve done several passes on that large multi-variable data set. I suspect to end up with three or four choices for relationships between the variables. These would be cases were several variables have a high correlation but the others are low. So each choice would have a different variable order. Hope that makes sense.”
“I think so. So it will end up that the customer has to decide which relationship is the correct one.”
Laughing Susan said, “Well, if there is a correct one. Actually the correct one might be the one where all the correlation coefficients are nearly equal.”
After a thoughtful pause, “You should include one where the coefficients are essentially identical.”
“As to finishing this, I suspect a couple of more weeks. I will pause it, so I can complete some of the smaller projects.”
“That is fine. We potentially have a new project but it is not data analysis per se. As presently conceived it will need several programmers. Conceptually they would work on different aspects of the concept. Choice of language is up to the programmers. It will be a week or so before I can send you the details, renumeration and goals.
“In addition to that I will be sending you three small programming projects that are unrelated to the big one. They will include parameters, goals, renumeration, and time line. Send me any questions they have.”
“So you want me to be the gate keeper?”
“Yes, cause we know each other and are clear in our communication. From my perspective it is hard to establish that without directly interacting for a period of time. Our thought is that since you are speaking directly to them, then when you express whatever to us it will be clear to us.”
“Okay. Just off hand, what I may do, is to have them join me here when I call you.”
“We can try that.
“I think that covers the work side of things. What is happening there?”
Susan then gave her a summary of recent events. She noted that assembling the building for hay storage would begin on Friday.
When she finished, Tracey said, “It sounds like your projects are progressing as planned. We will be interested in hearing more regarding your interaction with the Hawkins. As I suspect the children will ensure that it continues.”
“Oh, I agree. I suspect they will have quite a few unrelated aunts.”
“On another topic, George sent Steve an email. In it he noted that the DEA and Immigration had visited Walter’s ranch. While Samuel Walter and his foreman weren’t involved, they lost quite a few of the ranch hands. As a result, they are scrambling to find replacements. George doesn’t think the loss is critical, but it will put a strain on them.”
“Samuel was pretty nice, so I hope this taught him to be a bit more active as a manager.”
“Ah, so you suspected that as well.”
“They did have a nice place and seemed to be well maintained.”
“Agree. That pretty well covers what I had.”
“For me as well. Tell Steve that I missed his participation.”
“Will do. Same time next week?”
“Yes. That should be fine.”
Once they disconnected, Susan checked the time before deciding to document the phone call. When she finished, she checked email. In it was the notice regarding the new viewing area for the construction site. With that done she went to change clothes before heading to lunch.
In the dining room, Susan made her selections then found an empty table. She had just started her lunch when she heard someone say, “May we join you?”
Looking up she saw, Erin, Siobhan, and Caitlin and said, “Please. It has been a while since we’ve chatted.”
Caitlin said, “Yes, it has. I’ve seen you around but you are usually involved in something.”
Smiling Susan inquired, “So Erin, Siobhan, you’ve been here a while now, so how do you like it?”
Smiling Erin replied, “I am very pleased to be here. All my misgivings have been put to rest. On another note, do you lead Tai Chi all the time?”
“Well I think most of the time. Why would you like that role?”
“Oh, no. I am new to doing those exercises. So what other exercises do you do besides swim?”
“I follow swimming with either lifting weights or using the stepper. Besides helping my fitness, those exercises are to strengthen the muscles in my upper back and chest. You are welcome to join me when I do them, as it is more fun with someone else.”
Erin looked at Siobhan then said, “We just might do that.”
Caitlin added, “You might want to mention your interest to Jackie. She can see that you get started correctly as mimicking Susan may not fit your needs.”
“She always seems so busy,” noted Siobhan.
“Well she usually isn’t very busy right after lunch, so you might want to chat with her then.”
“We can do that.”
They continued to chat as they ate their lunch. Susan was surprised that all three expressed an interest in horseback riding. All three had experienced commercial trail rides and weren’t very impressed. However, based on what they had heard, they thought it might be different experience here.
After hearing their experiences Susan said, “So far our horseback rides have been done without a set plan. Usually it has been a small group of around six but smaller groups have gone out. For those who don’t have much experience, we insist that you go with a couple of skilled riders. We have about a dozen who fit that criteria. To date the rides have not been organized or scheduled. So you might want to hang out at the barn occasionally or let someone you know who rides of your interest. I will try to remember your interest when the opportunity arises, but no promises.”
“That would be appreciated,” responded both Erin and Siobhan.
“Ah, I just remembered that several of us are planning on going riding Saturday morning depending on the weather. So that is an opportunity for you.”
“Great,” responded Erin. “I will likely be there. I suspect we wear more when riding than we usually do.”
“Yes. There are community riding clothes available in the tack room. There is pretty nice selection and in good shape.”
Siobhan inquired, “What is the new building going to used for?”
“It will be used to store hay and grain for the horses. In a couple of weeks the barn will torn down, so it can be replaced with a stable.”
“I was surprised to see a couple small children in the gym playing the other day,” noted Erin.
“They are related to the family that operates the ranch east of us. The cattle you see here in the canyon are theirs. I suspect the children will visit again.”
“Good,” responded Caitlin.
When Caitlin hesitated to say something Susan said, “Everyone in the area knows that the women who live her are for the most part single mothers. As to other activities here, my feeling, is that it is none of their business.”
“Oh, I agree.”
“At first I was bothered when I saw men in the building several times,” said Erin. “Then someone reminded me that what we typically wear covers more than some swimming suits do.”
They had all finished their lunch when Susan said, “I enjoyed your company, so let’s do this again or something similar.”
“I agree,” responded Erin, with the others nodding in agreement.
11th Thursday – Lone Pine -
It was midmorning when Susan received a call from Lena. She said, “Kim just advised me that the trucks delivering the building will be here shortly.”
“Great. How about we saddle up and meet them?”
“Sounds like an excellent idea.”
They were sitting astride their horses on the lane a short distance from the house when the trucks arrived. The first one stopped a short distance from them. Susan rode up alongside the cab and said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” he responded then inquired, “Where are we to unload?”
“Just follow this path,” Susan responded as she pointed toward the now dirt path others had used. “If you like, we can lead.”
“You can, but it looks like it will be easy to follow. Do you know where they want this stuff placed?”
“Not really. I would think near the foundation but not too close. The area around it is pretty open.”
“Okay.” He then put the truck in gear and eased forward. Susan and Lena chose to ride alongside the lead truck as it made it way across the field.
When they were alongside the foundation, the trucks stopped. After putting pads down, the trailers landing gear was extended then the trailer was disconnected from the tractor. While he was doing that the other trucks did the same. When they finished, the lead driver told Susan and Lena, “A crew, a truck crane and a fork lift will arrive shortly. You might want to put up a sign at the turn off.”
“Good idea,” responded Lena. When the driver started back to his truck they said, “Have a nice day.”
As he climbed into his truck he smiled and said, “You all do the same.”
They sat on their horses and watched, as the trucks made their way back to the lane. Lena said, “If you want to wait out on the lane, I’ll go make up a sign.”
“That suits me.”
“I guess it only needs an arrow with the words something like “Construction traffic.”
“That ought to be plain enough.”
After placing a sign, they rode around the area near the buildings for a while, then after unsaddling the horses put them out to pasture.
As they were walking back to the elevator, Lena said, “Well that pretty well takes care of the morning.”
“That it does. I think I will read until it is time for lunch.”
