10th Tuesday – Lone Pine -
As they were finishing breakfast, Crystal came up to them and said, “Are you all still going for a ride today?”
“That is the plan,” replied Lena with Susan nodding. “We’ll probably leave shortly after we finish breakfast.”
“Mind if I join you?”
“We would be pleased to have your company.”
“In that case, I’ll contribute by putting together lunch for us.”
“Great. Jen is going with us, so there will be four of us.”
On leaving the barn, they rode north to the edge of the canyon then generally followed a game trail up the side of the hill to the crest. When they reached the crest, they couldn’t see much due to the trees. They continued following the game trail down to the meadow. On entering the meadow, they paused to view the area before them. Their expressions indicated how much they enjoyed the view of the rolling terrain much of which was covered in green grass. A portion of the view was familiar to several. As it was the area to the North of them where they had met Liam and his friends several weeks ago. While the terrain was generally rolling, there was a variety of small hills with gentle rises scattered across the area before them. While some hills were barely noticeable, others rose higher than them on horseback. Many of the hills had patches of brush on them along with a few trees.
After several minutes, Crystal inquired, “So which way?”
“Let’s continue sort of northeast toward the boundary,” responded Susan.
“Do you have a destination in mind?”
“Not really, but by going in this direction, we might come close to our neighbor’s place, the Bar H Ranch.”
It was lunch time when they reached a small groupings of trees on a small knoll. Jen said, “This looks like a nice place to stop for lunch.”
“Suits me,” responded the others.
They had nearly finished their lunch when Jen cocked her head. After a moment she said, “Did you all hear that?”
“What?” asked Lena as the Susan and Crystal shook their heads.
Just then a breeze picked up. They all heard the sound but again the breeze diminished before they could identify it.
“I briefly heard it,” noted Susan as she turned her head more to the east, to be essentially facing the same direction that Jen was.
Seeing her movement, the others turned to face that direction as well. It was several minutes before the breeze picked up. This time they all heard the sound. Susan noticed that Dante ears were up with his head pointed in the direction they were facing.
Susan said, “Well the horses have noticed the sounds as well, so since we’ve all finished our lunch, shall we go see what that is about?”
Without a word, they began picking up their lunch items. They were soon on horseback headed in the direction of the sound. As they got closer, the sounds became more distinct and less dependent on the breeze.
Susan was the first to recognize that the sounds were cries for help. After noting her impression to the others, she urged Dante to move more quickly. The others followed her lead and they were soon near the county road. Now the cries for help were obvious. With a little urging Dante jumped the fence. Once on the road, Susan turned Dante toward the cries for help. Behind her, Lena had Cedar jump the fence. Susan had only gone a short distance down the road heading away from their ranch, when she saw a vehicle off the other side of the road. Based on the tire tracks, it appeared to have gone off the side of the road and down into a fairly deep depression. In doing so, it had obviously side swiped several trees before stopping. It was now laying partially on its right side.
Dante slowed as they neared the vehicle. Susan looked back over her shoulder to see where her friends were. Lena was a short distance behind her on the road, while Jen and Crystal were following the fence line.
Susan halted Dante then turned back toward Jen and Crystal. On reaching them said, “There has been a severe accident someone needs to go get Nancy and notify emergency services.”
Jen said, “Crystal as soon as I remove the emergency pack, take my horse and go. I’ve tripped our emergency signal, so the Security Center knows there is an issue and our location. Susan, help me over the fence.”
After dismounting Jen place the emergency pack on the other side of the fence. Once Jen was over the fence next to the road, she picked up the emergency pack then jogged up the road following Susan on Dante.
As they neared the vehicle, they could tell that there were several different voices. On reaching the vehicle, they saw that the left front was pushed in. Then from the windshield on back the side of the vehicle was torn up. The window in the drivers door was missing. The other windows on the left side were shattered and partly missing. The glass in the back door was shattered.
On reaching the vehicle, Jen looked the vehicle over. She quickly decided entering through the back was the easiest. She then knocked the shattered glass out of the back window. After taking a quick look at the stuff in the back, she climbed in then crawled across the stuff. A few moments later the screams tapered off. After a bit, Jen hollered, “We have two small children. They are partially in their car seats. Not sure of the condition of the driver. The children and passenger were the voices we heard.”
“So how can we help?” inquired Lena.
“Give me a minute to consider alternatives.” After a few moments she said, “Do you think you can climb through the back window?”
“I think so. What do you have in mind?”
“Well with you inside, I can hand you a child in their car seat, then you can hand them out to Susan. I don’t think the side window is large enough, besides it would be awkward.”
“Well considering how much stuff is back here, I am surprised you were able to reach the middle seat. To do what you have in mind, it would be better to first remove this stuff.” When she reached in to grab an item, she noticed the gate latch, then said, “Did you try to lower the tailgate?”
“Never thought of it.”
When Lena pulled the lever, she heard and felt the latch release. However, when she pulled on it, it hardly moved. Seeing what Lena was doing, Susan joined her in pulling on the tailgate. After several tries, it slowly lowered with a loud screech. They then removed the contents and set them on the ground a short distance from the SUV.
With cargo area empty, Lena crawled in, then said, “We are ready.”
In the meantime, Jen had lowered the righthand portion of the middle seat. Hearing Lena was ready, Jen released the car seat nearest the right side then eased it back to Lena. Lena then eased it out the back to Susan. When Susan took the seat, she noticed the child was awake and quietly watching them. She quickly sat it down a short distance away on a flat spot near where they had placed the contents they removed. As she sat the seat down, she gave the child a kiss on her forehead. Returning to the SUV, she wondered how long it would take for help to arrive. On reaching the vehicle, Lena was ready to hand Susan the other car seat with the other child. When Susan sat the second car seat on the ground, she thought she heard vehicles approaching.
She knelt down by the children then said, “We have help coming. How do you feel?”
“Thirsty,” responded one.
“Well, all I have is a bottle of water. Think, you can drink from that?”
One of the girls responded, “Of course.”
Susan retrieved a water bottle from Dante’s saddle bag. The child grinned when Susan handed her a bottle.
A woman began to scream again, the little girl said, “That is our sister. We think she is hurt more than she let on.”
The screaming was due to Jen touching the woman in the passengers seat. She said, “We have help coming. We’ve moved the children out of the vehicle and are safe. Where do you hurt?”
“All over,” responded the woman with a hoarse voice. “Please call Donna Hawkins.”
“Well I don’t have her number or a phone with me, but I will see what I can do. Be back in a moment.”
“Please take care of the children.”
“Oh, we will. They’ve been moved out of the vehicle and a friend is with them.”
Jen slowly crawled to the back of the vehicle. When she reached the tailgate, she saw that Nancy had arrived and was checking the children. She said, “Jan, the passenger asked us to contact a Donna Hawkins and advise her of the accident. Can you see if Kim or Madeline knows how to contact her? I presume they must live nearby.”
“That sounds like a name associated with the Bar H Ranch.” With that Jan used her radio to contact Lone Pine Security Center with the request.
After Nancy finished checking the children, she came over to the vehicle. “How are the others?”
Jen responded softly, “I believe the driver is dead. The passenger is awake and believes she may have broken ribs.”
Hearing that Nancy nodded then crawled in to the vehicle. On reaching the space between the seats, she eased between the front seats to check the driver. It didn’t take her long to determine that Jen was correct, the driver was deceased. On turning her attention to the woman in the right seat, the woman said, “She is dead isn’t she?”
“I am afraid so. How are you doing?”
“Well I am alive, so I think, I will survive this. I suspect I have broken ribs based on the pain when I take a deep breath. I know my head hit the door hard enough that I think I was out for a while. How are the children?”
“When I checked them, they appear to be fine.”
“That’s good to hear as we were all well shaken.”
“We’ve alerted emergency services. I see no urgency in moving you. Besides it would be difficult due to the way the vehicle is laying on its side. So I would prefer to wait until they arrive before we try to move you.”
“Well, if you contacted Donna, their crew will likely be here before emergency services arrives.”
It was several minutes later when they heard a group of horses rapidly approaching. Susan mounted Dante to gain a better view. On seeing the riders, she began waving her hat over her head.
When the riders saw her signal, they turned toward her and began to slow. On reaching the scene, the lead riders frowned when they first saw the vehicle. They then smiled on seeing the children sitting on the ground nearby. A rider asked, “Are the children okay? What about the women?”
“The children appear to be fine. Nancy our doctor gave them a quick check, so she can tell you more. However, she is inside the vehicle checking on the others.”
“How did you find them?” asked an older man.
“Luck. While we were eating lunch, we heard faint sounds. It took us a bit before we realized that we only heard the sounds when the wind was from this direction. So we let our curiosity lead us and ended up here. As we got closer, we realized the sounds were screams for help.”
The older man said, “Johnson, think we can right the vehicle using the horses?”
“Probably, provided we have enough leverage.”
Susan suggested, “What if all of us tied on to the right door post near the roof as the vehicle isn’t fully on its side?”
“That will likely work as the left wheels aren’t on the ground.”
After breaking out the door windows, they began securing their ropes to the right door post. The ropes were laid across the vehicle’s roof the attached to saddle horns. When all the riders including Susan and Lena were in position, Johnson said, “Okay now everyone ease back just like you would with a steer.”
As they eased back, Susan watched the vehicle as the ropes tightened. She could feel the Dante’s struggle as he tried to back up. To her it seemed like hours before the vehicle began to move, then when it reached a critical point, it quickly came to rest on its wheels but was still tilted. The group cheered once the vehicle was somewhat upright.
With the vehicle up off its right side, they were able to open the right door enough to carefully ease the woman out and on to a blanket. They carefully carried here to a flat area, then Nancy quickly gave the woman a more thorough check. When she finished she said, “We should get her to the hospital as soon as possible. If it wasn’t for the air bag and seat belts, her injuries would likely have been much more serious.
“As to the driver, she didn’t survive.”
After a moment of silence Jan offered, “The back seats fold down in our vehicle so we could transport her.”
“Thank you,” responded the lead rider. “Who are you?”
“I am Jan McFall. We are all from Lone Pine Ranch.”
The older man said, “I am Sam Hawkins from Bar H Ranch. Those with me are part of my crew. What about the children?”
“The children are fine,” responded Nancy. “They likely have bruises from the car seat restraints. There will likely be some soreness due being jerked around during the crash.”
“Good.”
Jan inquired, “Is it okay with you that I advise emergency services of our intention to transport everyone to the hospital?”
“Sure.” Turning to his crew he said, “Let’s place Miria and the children in their vehicle. I’ll ride with them to the hospital. I need one of you to bring Donna to the hospital. A couple of you should stay here in case the sheriff wants statements.”
Realizing that woman may be in the hospital for a while Susan offered, “Mr. Hawkins, we are available to watch the children if needed. We are nearby, so it would be reasonably convenient.”
“Just Sam is fine. As to the offer, thank you however, I will leave that decision in Donna’s and Miria’s hands.”
In response Susan nodded with a smile.
It didn’t take long for them to place Miria and the children in the Lone Pine SUV. Once it had departed for hospital, a few of the Bar H riders, mounted up preparing to return to Bar H. One of those staying said, “Johnson, would you come back with a pickup so we can take Miria’s stuff to the ranch?”
Leading Sam’s horse Johnson replied, “Sure.”
The rider who had spoken to Johnson came over to Susan and Lena who were standing near their horses. “Hi I am known as AJ. You all have two very fine looking stallions.”
“I am Susan and my friend is Lena. Thank you for the comment. We were lucky to come across them when we did.”
“A red roan quarter horse is pretty rare around here.”
“I wouldn’t know as I’ve only been in the area a few months,” replied Susan.
Another rider approached and said, “Hi Susan and Lena. I am Larry.”
“Good to meet you,” responded both.
“As to red roan quarter horses the only one I know of was last owned by Walter’s ranch down in Casper. It has quite a reputation.”
Smiling Susan said, “Well if you are brave you can pet that horse as it is next to me.”
“And you can ride him?” responded Larry with a disbelieving expression.
“Yep. You saw me on him earlier assisting with righting the vehicle.”
“Ah...”
Susan continued, “He is a very well trained horse and a pleasure to ride. I believe the issue the others had was in the way they interacted with him. If you let him know what you want then he is a great team mate or assistant. However, if you are demanding, then you will likely have a difficult time. So I think it is safe to say, he has a very strong personality, as well as being well trained.”
“Well I’ve never run across a horse like that.”
“I think I have,” remarked AJ. “But, I don’t think any I’ve ridden had that strong of a personality. I will admit that I found some were much easier to ride and work with than others. I always attributed it to training, so perhaps I was only partially correct.”
“Hmm ... I’ve never thought of it in quite those terms.”
Lena said, “So how do you like the Bar H?”
“Well I guess I can say I like it,” responded AJ. “I’ve been there three years. They pay well, have a nice bunk house and good food. What more could you ask for?”
Larry said, “I agree. The only downside is that I wish there were nicer places nearby to spend my time off. So how long have you all been in the area?”
Susan replied, “A little over two months. I like the scenery and quiet atmosphere. It certainly beats living in a condo in a town.”
With a puzzled expression AJ queried, “What do you do?”
“Two things. Multi-variant data analysis usually on fairly large datasets. Basically, it is to identify complex relationships between variables in a data set. By knowing those relationships, it can enable effective planning. So I can work any place where I have a good internet connection and a suitable computer. However, since moving here, I’ve again become interested in horse training and riding.”
“Wow, talk about diverse,” responded a smiling AJ with Larry nodding agreement.
At that point their interaction was interrupted by the arrival of the sheriff, crime scene crew, tow truck and coroner. Sheriff Wells was a bit unhappy that no one knew what caused the crash. Even so, he did make sure that the crash site was well documented before allowing the body to be removed and the vehicle towed away.
The investigation was nearly complete when Johnson returned with a pickup. As he was parking, Kathy arrived from Lone Pine in a pickup. When Kathy saw Susan’s expression, she said, “Jan called as she wasn’t sure Jen had a way back to the ranch.”
Susan both Lena looked around then Susan said, “Well we could have ridden double.”
Smiling Jen responded, “While I really enjoy horseback riding, I think back in a pickup would be more comfortable than riding double. So let’s save that option for when it is the only choice.”
On hearing the exchange, AJ, Larry and Johnson just smiled, as they went to gather the stuff that had been removed from the vehicle. When Susan noticed AJ, Larry and Johnson head toward the belongings they removed from the SUV, she went to assist. When Lena, Jen and Katy saw her intent, they also assisted. Once they had all of Miria’s belongings in the pickup, Johnson moved the pickup to the other side of the road. The tow truck then moved in behind the SUV to pull it out of the depression. Once it was on the road, the front end was placed on a dolly, and the tow truck departed towing the wrecked vehicle.
Sheriff Wells came over to the group and said, “I am not sure whose property this is but we need the accident area to remain undisturbed for a while.”
AJ looked at Johnson then said, “This is Bar H pasture. While there isn’t any livestock in this pasture currently, we will go ahead and put in a temporary fence to separate it from the pasture. Would you let Mr. Hawkins know when we can repair the fence?”
“Sure. We only need the area isolated for a short time. This is to make sure we have all the documentation we need. So likely not more than a couple of weeks.”
It was approaching dinner time before those at the accident site were ready to depart. The two groups exchanged goodbyes before departing. Susan and Lena watched those from Bar H depart, then turned to follow Kathy and Jen in the pickup back to the ranch. On reaching the ranch complex, they rode past the foundation being put in for the steel building. They were surprised to see how much progress had been made. On reaching the barn, they unsaddle their horses then fed and put water out for them. With that completed, and seeing the time they opted for a shower before meeting for dinner.
When Susan and Lena entered the dining room everyone applauded. Susan looked at Lena who shrugged, so with that they bowed, then went to sit with Jen and Jo. They were soon joined by Madeline and Kim.
Susan said, “Has anyone heard from Jan or Nancy?”
“Yes,” responded Madeline. “Miria is doing fine. She has several cracked ribs, along with quite a bit of bruising. The children are fine but have some bruises due restraints of their seats. The children are four and five. Everyone seems quite mystified by the fact they weren’t more upset when you found them. I understand that Mrs. Hawkins was a little reluctant regarding the baby sitting offer, but Miria was agreeable, so we will see. This certainly gets the idea of interacting with our neighbors off to a fast start. Even so we are pleased that you found them.”
