9th Saturday – Lone Pine -

It was just getting light out when Susan opened her eyes to see Tracey’s head lying on Steve’s other shoulder. Her fingers were loosely curled around Tracey’s forearm. She could feel what she thought were Tracey’s fingers on her forearm. As she slowly became aware of her surroundings, she remembered that this was the last time they would wake up this way for a while. Their plans were for them to visit again in six weeks.

She had only been awake for a few moments when she saw Tracey’s eyes open. Susan moved her lips to silently say, “Good morning.”

Tracey in return quietly blew her an air kiss.

A few moments later Steve’s eyes opened as he smiled. On seeing both were awake he said, “Good morning.”

Both responded, “Good morning.”

Susan added, “This is certainly a nice way to wake up.”

“That it is,” replied both.

Steve added, “Unfortunately, it will be a few weeks until we can do this again.”

Glancing at the clock Tracey said, “Wow, I am not sure there is enough time to pack and freshen up, before Kathy wants to depart.”

“Well I need to get up now,” responded Steve as he moved to sit up. “While I am in there, I will take a quick shower.”

Susan released Tracey’s arm and rolled to the side giving Steve space to get up.

“Thank you,” muttered Steve as he hurried to the lavatory.

Tracey scooted over to Susan then gave her a kiss, then said, “Real kisses are better than air kisses.”

“I agree that they have much more feeling, but there are times when air kisses are the only choice.”

“True,” replied Tracey as they entered the bathroom, to find Steve exiting the shower.

“All yours. Tracey, is your laptop packed?”

“Yep. I did that when I finished up yesterday.”

“Great. After I pack, I’ll check the work area and pack up mine.”

Susan said, “You all are welcome to leave stuff here as there is plenty of room in the closet and dresser. I suspect some of things you bought you will only wear here, so why haul them back and forth.”

“Thank you,” replied Tracey and Steve.

Tracy added, “That certainly simplifies packing.”

The had just placed their bags in the lounge, when there was a knock on the door. When Susan opened the door, she found both Kathy and Madeline there. “Good morning. I didn’t think we are running late.”

“You aren’t,” responded Kathy. “Our charter would like us to arrive a bit earlier than we planned.”

“We’re ready to go now. Do we have time to eat?”

“Would egg and sausage sandwiches be acceptable?”

“Sure,” responded Susan then added with a smile, “Especially, if it includes coffee and juice.”

“It does,” noted Madeline. “We may have a problem with Kendra delivering the babies. Kendra hasn’t been able to reach the adoptive parents. She spoke with the mother briefly late Tuesday and confirmed arrangements. Now Jill is not feeling well, so that means Kendra will be traveling alone to meet the new parents.”

Kathy said, “Well I could fill that role, as Susan or Jen could bring the van back.”

“Where is she going?” inquired Tracey.

Madeline responded, “I understand that it about 45 minutes or so toward Morgantown.”

Tracey glanced at Steve then said, “Well in that case, if you would like we could accompany her. After she has met the adoptive parents and their plans are sorted, we can head home as we live not very far from there.”

“No one else is available?” queried Susan.

“Not easily. Kendra’s failure to reach them could be for any number of reasons. Going ahead risks stranding Kendra and babies there alone if the adoptive parents aren’t there. Not going has other significant consequences.”

Tracey responded, “Well since you would prefer to complete placing the babies with their new parents, we are more than happy to accompany Kendra. If the adoptive parents are unavailable, then Kendra and the babies are welcome to stay with us for a few days. Doing that would give you time to sort out the next step.” As she was speaking Steve’s eye brows rose. “I presume there are others who are anxious to become adoptive parents.”

“Yes, but if that happens, it could take a week or two to sort out.”

Tracey looked at Steve, then replied, “We are willing to support Kendra as needed.”

“Won’t that be inconvenient, as I thought you lived in Maryland near DC.”

Smiling Tracey replied, “We do have an apartment in Maryland that we use when we need to be in the DC area. However, our home is in rural eastern West Virginia near Berkley Springs. Thanks to modern communication, we are able to spend most of our time there.”

“Well, if that is okay with Kendra then fine. In the meantime, we will contact the Foundation and advise them of the situation.”

“Where is Kendra?” enquired Susan.

“She is in the clinic getting the babies ready to travel.”

“Perhaps, we should get her input on this change.”

Smiling Madeline said, “Oh, we definitely will. Shall we go see how she is doing?”

When the group reached the entrance to the clinic, they saw Kendra set the baby carriers next to several bags at the entrance to the clinic.

Seeing them approaching she smiled then frowned, before saying, “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” replied the group. Then Kathy said, “It looks like you are ready to go.”

“Yes. However, I haven’t seen Maureen. When I called the Thompson’s I got a recorded message, which wasn’t the case in the past.”

Madeline said, “Well we have another problem and a possible solution to consider. Maureen is ill and Nancy strongly suggests she not travel. However, Tracey and Steve have offered to fill that role until you are settled in with the Thompsons. Would that be acceptable to you?”

“Sure. What should I do if I can’t deliver the babies?”

Tracey offered, “You could stay with us until the next step can be sorted out. We have a fairly large place in eastern West Virginia, so there is plenty of room for you to join us.”

“Okay. Let’s try that.”

“Let me get a cart,” said Kathy. When she returned with the cart, they loaded the bags and baby carriers on to the cart and headed for the elevator. At the elevator she said, “Just a moment, I need to get our breakfast.”

When Susan saw Kathy and Steve returning, she pushed the elevator call button. At the same time, Jen exited the Security Center and joined them. They exchanged greetings as they entered the elevator.

After they had everything in the van, Madeline said, “Don’t hesitate to call if you encounter any problems. Most of all have a safe trip.”

Kendra said, “I’ll be sure to keep you informed.”

With that Katy eased the van out of the garage. It was approaching 7:30 when they reached the county road. Kathy turned to the left. On seeing Susan’s puzzled look Kathy said, “This will take us a little bit longer but by going this way you all will get to see what the landscape is like north of us. Also, this road crosses the ranch north of us. Once we are on the Interstate, we will make up the time.”

Jen smiled, “This is not the way we would be expected to go. I think only Jan and Jo know that we are taking this route.”

“Likely, as I told Terri,” noted Kathy.

They had gone a short distance when Tracey sighed then said, “I am really going to miss the morning exercise routine especially being able to swim.”

With a smile Susan responded, “Well when you visit again, you could swim three or four times a day to make up for missed opportunities.” Several chuckled on hearing the suggestion.

As she tapped Susan on the shoulder, she responded, “Thank you but I think one session a day is sufficient. A better idea would be for us to check out the local gym.”

“That is a very good idea,” noted Steve. “If we manage a couple of times a week, it would be much better than what we’ve been doing. We should be able to pick a slow time, so we can duck out during the day.”

As they ate their breakfast sandwiches, they shared a bit about themselves and life where they lived. On reaching Billings, Kathy took them to a neighborhood diner. As she parked, she said, “We are close to the airport. I thought this would be a good place to stop for a bite. Now, considering the time, they should still be serving breakfast. The food here is very good as is the service. As to timing, we have a little over an hour before we need to be at the Executive terminal. Also, I believe, you can get sandwiches and drinks to go.”

“Do you stop here often?” inquired Jen as they exited the van.

“Well it depends on when we are meeting the plane. When it is an early morning departure, we leave Lone Pine before dawn and stop here for breakfast. Sometimes we linger to pickup new arrivals in the afternoon. However, today we will be returning to Lone Pine once we see you all are on your way. I believe the plane is scheduled to arrive at your destination near dinner time.”

“Kendra was Ms Thompson expecting you at a specific time?” inquired Tracey.

“When we last chatted, I indicated that it would be early evening around dinner time, but indicated that I would give her a more precise time today.”

On entering the diner carrying the babies, they drew the attention of quite a few customers. As they were eating, when a woman passed their table, there was often a slight hesitation until they realized the babies were asleep.

After it had happened several times, Susan said, “Do the babies always draw this much attention?”

Kathy replied, “Yes. If the babies were awake, they would likely stop to chat for a bit as they interact with the babies.”

“Interesting.”

As they were finishing their brunch, Tracey asked the waitress, “Can we get sandwiches and drinks to go?”

“Sure, let me get you a menu.”

Susan looked at Kathy and Jen and said, “Do we want to do that as well?”

“Good idea,” responded Kathy.

On leaving the restaurant, they were carrying six lunches. After they were in the van Susan said, “Kathy, that was an excellent choice.”

“Yes, it was,” added Steve, with the others nodding in agreement.

Entering the Executive terminal, they saw the ground crew servicing an executive jet. Kathy said, “I believe that is your plane.” A few moments later, a pilot came in to the waiting area. On seeing Kathy he smiled and said, “Great you are here. We’re ready if you are.”

“It is good to see you again,” responded Kathy. “Your passengers today are Kendra with two babies, Steve and Tracey.”

“Good to meet you all. Our destination is Lancaster, correct?”

“Yes,” responded Kendra with a puzzled expression.

“Great.” Seeing Kendra’s expression he added, “Occasionally, a customer changes the destination but fails to tell the crew which can lead to an unhappy situation. Now, does anyone need to use the restroom?” Seeing negative responses, he continued, “We do have a toilet on the plane but it is rather cramped. So it looks like we are ready to board.”

The group exchanged hugs then gathered up their things and followed the pilot out to the aircraft. It wasn’t long before those in the terminal saw the cabin door close and heard the engines start. Kathy, Jen, and Susan watched until they saw the plane lift off.

When it was out of sight, Kathy said, “Shall we head for home?”

“Suits me,” responded Susan with Jen nodding agreement. “We should make it back well before dinner time.”

“Well, since we are here we could go shopping before heading back,” offered Kathy as they entered the van.

“Or we could keep our activity mysterious and just return to Lone Pine by another route,” suggested Jen with a smile. “As to shopping, I don’t really need anything. However, if you want to stop it is fine with me.”

“I don’t really need more clothes but I am fine either way,” noted Susan.

“Well to be honest, I don’t need anything. There are a couple of scenic views so we can stop at one for lunch.”

“Now that is an excellent suggestion.”

It was a little after 2 PM when the van entered the garage at Lone Pine. Before going inside, they removed the trash from the van. When they stepped out of the elevator on the 1st floor, Susan said, “I enjoyed our time together.” She then gave Jen and Kathy a hug.

Both Jen and Kathy assured Susan that they had enjoyed the trip.

It was a little before 4 when Susan’s phone chimed. When she saw the message from Tracey she thought, great they made it. She then forwarded the message to Madeline.

Lancaster -

As they were getting into the rental car Kendra said, “I didn’t expect our arrival to be quite this late.”

“Well, it is a little before 6 and since they are presumably expecting you, so let’s go see them.”

“Okay. I will try to reach them again as we head that way,” suggested Kendra.

“As you wish.”

After selecting the number, it rang, then Kendra heard a woman say, “Hello, Thompson residence.”

Kendra said, “Good evening. I am trying to reach Ms. Thompson, to confirm my meeting with her scheduled for this evening.”

“Unfortunately she will not be available. May I ask who you are and why you were meeting with her?”

“My name is Kendra and I am from Lone Pine in Wyoming. I am bringing her two packages that she was anxious to receive.” Kendra heard the woman make an odd sound then added, “May I know who I am speaking to?”

“Yes. I am her sister, Adele Wilson. You say Lone Pine?”

“Yes, ma’m.”

After a moment she said, “I think we should meet. I gather you have this address.”

“Yes, ma’m. We should be there in about 30 minutes.”

“I take it you just arrived.”

“Yes, ma’m. We landed a short time ago at Lancaster and are now headed in your direction.”

“Fine. See you shortly.”

“Thank you.”

Tracey said, “That sounded like interesting exchange. Did you notice the voices in the background?”

“Yes, there were several and some sounded like children. Although she dodged it, from the way she sounded I suspect something has happened to at least Ms. Thompson.”

It wasn’t long before Steve parked in the Thompson’s driveway. As soon as the car stopped, several people stepped out on to the front porch.

On exiting the car Kendra picked up one of the baby carriers and Tracey picked up the other. Steve followed them up to the porch carrying the bags containing the baby supplies.

“Good evening, my name is Kendra. My companions are Tracey and Steve.”

“Good evening, all. I am Adele.” Then with a slight tremble in her voice, “I gather those are the babies that Marie was expecting.” Her comment caused several behind her to gasp along with shocked expressions. Several small children could be seen peaking around the adults with curious expressions.

“Yes, ma’m.”

Adele then softly said, “Now I understand her last words.” Her comment prompted several nods. Steve and Tracey exchanged a puzzled look as Kendra frowned. In a more normal voice Adele added, “Please all of you come join us inside as I think there is a lot we need to share.”

Once they were seated inside Adele inquired, “Have you had dinner?”

“Just a quick snack at a drive thru as we thought coming here was more important than stopping for dinner,” responded Kendra.

Smiling she responded, “Well you are in luck as we have pizzas coming. Please join us.”

“That is very nice offer, but we don’t want to intrude. How soon will Ms. Thompson be back?”

“You won’t be intruding as I am sure she would want you to join us.” After a pause as tears filled her eyes she added, “The Thompson’s died as the result of injuries suffered in an accident Wednesday afternoon. Their car was hit by large pickup truck that ran a red light at high speed. Leonard was died at the scene and Marie passed away late Thursday.”

Kendra gasped, then softly said, “I am so sorry to hear that.”

Tracey, and Steve said together, “You have our deepest sympathy.”

Kendra then said, “When I chatted with Marie earlier this week, she was very excited to learn that the babies would soon arrive.”

“Oh, she was,” responded Adele. “You are fortunate to catch us all here this evening. Our intent was to have a quiet close family remembrance. The funeral won’t be until next week.”

“Well we don’t want to interfere with your family gathering,” softly responded Kendra. “We can find a hotel then meet with you at your convenience. Since the babies are officially their children, it leaves me unsure about how to proceed.”

Smiling Adele said, “Nonsense. Since you are here, it is an indication that their adoption of the children was approved.”

“Yes, the adoption took place two days after their birth. I have certified copies of the birth certificates and adoption papers with me.”

“Then I think the situation is fairly straight forward, as I am the executor of their wills. As their temporary care giver you and your escorts are welcome to the hospitality of the house.” As she finished speaking, she glanced at the other family members, who were either smiling or nodding.

“The pizzas should be here shortly, so let’s sort this out as we eat. How soon till the babies need to be fed?”

“Perhaps a couple of hours as they were fed shortly before we landed.”

“How old are they?”

“Ten days.”

“Can we see them?”

“Certainly.” With that Kendra pulled to covers off the baby carriers. “The baby on the right is Samuel Lee Thompson and the baby on the left is Lidia Jean Thompson. They are fraternal twins.”

It was quiet as each person eased up to get a closer look at the sleeping babies. As they were doing this, the door bell rang, prompting several people to answer it. A few moments later, several pizza boxes and soda bottles were carried into the kitchen.

Once they began eating, Adele said, “I think I failed to introduce myself. I am Adele Wilson, one of Marie’s sisters. Rusty is my husband,” as she pointed toward him. “We have four children, well six now.” Her comment caused several to gasp, then smile and nod. She then introduced the family members and noted how the different family groups were related.

“Kendra, what were your arrangements with Marie?”

“Well, she planned on me staying here for several days. This was so I could assist her in getting the babies settled in their new home and her comfortable with caring for them. To aid in that I brought a couple of gallons of milk for them, as they are currently being breast fed. The last time I spoke to her, she hadn’t decided whether to induce lactation or not.

When Samuel and Lidia’s arms and legs started moving, one of the children said with a tone indicating their amazement, “Their moving.”

“Yes,” responded Kendra. “They are waking up as it about time for a diaper change and to nurse. Is there a place setup to care for them, as we will need to change diapers.”

“Yes. She has a nursery setup and stocked.”

A woman softly asked, “After they are awake and changed can we hold them?”

Smiling Adele glanced at Kendra then responded, “I don’t see any problem with us holding them briefly or burping after they are fed.”

Once the diapers were changed, Kendra asked, “Will it be okay for me to nurse them? Or would you prefer that I use the bottled milk that I brought?”

Adele looked around then said, “Which ever you are most comfortable with doing? I know my children are aware of how it is done.”

“Well my preference is to nurse them as I am quite full.”

The children quietly watched as Kendra took Samuel then sat on the couch. Tracey placed the baby supply bag next to Kendra as she unbuttoned her dress then wiped her nipple with a wet wipe. As soon as Samuel felt the nipple, he latched on. When she looked up, she saw looks of amazement on the faces of the children. Kendra thought, ‘Oh, shit.’ Then said, “Sorry, I didn’t think about where I was.”

“Don’t worry about it,” responded Adele. She then sat beside Kendra, then looking at the children she said, “What you are seeing is the way babies can be fed when they are very small. Some of you, did this when you were his age. Typically this is a very private activity for the mother, the baby, and perhaps the family.”

An older girl said, “So we should keep this to our selves.”

A woman responded, “Very perceptive of you, Monika.”

After each baby was fed, they were burped by one of the women. Once they were burped the babies were held by various family members and even some of the older children.
