Third Month -

9th Friday – Lone Pine -

Susan, Tracey, and Steve arrived at the entrance to the gym just as Lena did. Susan asked Lena, “Did you get a response from the builder?”

With a big smile, she replied, “Well, considering when we sent them our acceptance of the quote, they probably haven’t seen it yet. A bit anxious?”

Blushing she said, “Well not thinking too clearly is my excuse.”

“What?” inquired Beth.

Lena responded, “Yesterday afternoon, we presented Madeline with our proposal to replace the barn with a stable and arena. After reviewing our plan and the quotes with us, she gave us the go ahead to accept the quote that we thought was the best choice. This was for a couple of reasons. One is their proposed exterior fits with the exterior of this building and has some insulating characteristics. Another was the type of construction materials used for the interior. They also suggested a couple of minor changes that we liked. So late yesterday, we sent the contractor an email with a signed copy of the quote advising them that we had accepted their bid with their proposed changes.

“Yesterday morning when we were reviewing the project, we realized that we had overlooked defining a building for feed storage. When we met with Madeline, we told her about the items that still needed to be addressed and how we planned to resolve them. She concurred with our plans.”

Smiling Janet announced, “Good morning, everyone. It is time, shall we take our positions.”

With that prompt, everyone prepared to begin their morning exercises. When Janet saw they were ready, she started the music.

After Tai Chi, Tracey, Lena, and Steve went with Susan to swim. When they finished their laps, Susan was surprised to see several waiting to use the pool.

As she exited the pool, she said to Jackie, “Is it my imagination but it seems to be busier this morning?”

“Well, today it is. Many of those waiting to swim usually swim later in the day, closer to lunch time. Since you’ve started swimming every morning right after Tai Chi, the use of the pool has increased. Some follow Tai Chi using weights or stepper then swim before going to breakfast. We have quite a few who come in the afternoon or in the evening. I’ve been thinking of scheduling another Tai Chi session for late afternoon.”

“Well if it would help out, I could come earlier and use the stepper or weights before Tai Chi.”

“I see no need for you to change your routine unless you want to. It seems to me that everyone has worked out a schedule that suits them.”

“In that case, I will continue my routine. Have a good day,” said Susan. She then headed toward the nearby shower to rinse off. Neither of them noticed Tracey and Steve standing nearby and smiling due to observing the interchange.

After rinsing off she saw Tracey and Steve smiling, and inquired, “So why the smiles?”

“You mean it is against the rules to smile,” chided Tracey. “Actually I was smiling because seeing your interaction with Jackie brought back some memories from a long time ago. Good memories.”

Although the comment puzzled her, she responded, “Glad I could do that. Are you all going to join me for some time on the stepper?”

“Certainly, as we want to spend all time with you that we can ‘cause were leaving tomorrow.”

As they entered the area with the steppers, Susan said, “Do you all want to be included in the meeting with the group from the Apsaálooke (Crow) ranch?”

“I gather that this meeting is the result of you all meeting the group of riders the other day,” responded Steve.

“I believe so. I think I told you about suggesting that drones might be a good way to look for cattle when I heard what they were doing. As promised, after discussing the idea with Jan, I contacted Liam yesterday and gave him the information. While talking to him, I mentioned that we were looking for a saddle maker as we needed a couple of saddles along with related tack.”

After a moment Steve responded, “We will pass unless you need our input. We have plenty to keep us busy as our not being in the office is catching up with us.” Then he thoughtfully added, “Changing topics, do you think your interest in the stable and associated tasks will impact your availability for data analysis?”

“No, not really, as I see the time devoted to those tasks as being pretty flexible, so to me it will be a time management issue. As to the horses, there are two of us focused on their care. However, based on the interest I’ve seen, I am fairly certain that there are currently several residents who will help out.”

“Be sure and tell us if we are pushing too much work toward you.”

“Oh, I will. I am very comfortable with you all taking the lead on finding clients.” After glancing at the clock, she added, “I must be slow this morning, as I am not quite done and it’s time to for a shower then breakfast.”

“Check your counter,” responded Tracey with a smile as she stepped off hers.

After looking at the counter, “Guess I wasn’t slow after all, so it’s shower time.”

“That it is.”

As they were getting ready to leave the suite for breakfast, the phone rang. Susan answered it. She was quiet for a few moments then said, “Okay. I’ll bring the drawings of the site and stable plans. Bye.

“That was Lena, the Apsaálooke group will be here around 9, and she thought we ought to have drawings for what we are planning to do with us.”

“So are you going to involve them in your other projects?” responded Steve with an apprehensive expression.

“Sort of, we plan to ask them who would be a good choice for acquiring a steel building and a recommendation for someone to tear down the barn. You appear to have some concerns.”

“Sort of. I understand the reasons for increasing the interaction with them which is different than just hiring contractors. So has Madeline bought in to the idea of becoming more friendly with nearby ranches? Perhaps more importantly, has she talked to the Trustees?”

“As to today’s meeting, the Apsaálooke called to arrange it. I understand their call was prompted by us meeting their people on Wednesday. As to whether she talked to the trustees, I don’t know. However, there wasn’t any hesitancy on her part in approving the stable project. So...”

“Okay, now I remember your earlier comments regarding the people you all met.”

Tracey said, “Well if the opportunity arises, you could ask Madeline what the Trustees thought of the stable project.”

“That is a good idea, thanks.”

Steve added, “We like the way the situation is evolving for you all, and are a bit concerned as to whether the Trustees are abreast of the changes.”

It was approaching 9 when Lena and Susan approached the Hall A-B conference room entrance. In addition to their usual jacket, they were wearing the long skirts they wore when riding and western boots. As they were about to enter the room, they glanced toward the windows by the entrance. They saw Madeline and Kim by the entrance and a couple of vehicles approaching. They hurriedly placed the site and stable plans in the conference room then went to join Madeline and Kim.

When the vehicles stopped in front of the entrance, Madeline, accompanied by Kim, Susan, and Lena walked out to greet them. Jan and Jo soon joined them shortly after they had exited the building.

“Good morning,” said Madeline. “Welcome to Lone Pine,” as she stepped toward the two men leading the group. “My name is Madeline Winter. Please call me Madeline.”

An older man said, “Greetings. I am Jason Ryan, however my people know me as Medicine Crow.”

Madeline responded, “I don’t believe we have ever had visitors from your ranch or the reservation. With me are Kim Johnson, Susanne Wyland, Lena Thomas, Janice McFall and Joyce McEvery.” Each bowed as she noted their name.

“With me are Allen Walsh or Plain Feather, Brian Quinn or Iron Bull, Cass O’Connell or Cashala, Niamh Flynn or Nituna, and Brianna Moran or Awakkule. Note that the second name is our Apsaálooke name. I believe some of you know Liam, Cathal, and Gavin.” Each bowed as he noted their name.

“I believe Susan and Lena met them Wednesday while out horseback riding,” responded Madeline. “We would like for you to join us in the conference room?”

In the conference room, Madeline said, “Please have a seat. We would prefer for this be informal so would using given names be acceptable to you.”

Smiling Jason replied, “That would be quite acceptable.”

Kim said, “Our apologies, but we are uncertain of your customs. We have coffee, juice, water, and breakfast pastries on the side counter, please help yourself. If you would like something else, we can arrange it.”

Jason responded with a smile, “The pastries smell very tastey.”

“When we have the opportunity to visit you, we hope you will acquaint us with your customs,” suggested Susan with a smile.

“We will be happy to do that,” responded Brian.

After everyone had selected items from the side board, Madeline said, “Before we discuss the reason you called, perhaps I should share with you why I’ve asked several to join us.” She then noted that Kim was her assistant. Jan and Jo over saw their security needs and use drones to assist in our security. Lena and Susan oversee the care of our horses.

“Jason when you called you mentioned a problem with locating missing cattle and had heard that by using a drone it might lessen the challenge.”

“Yes. When Liam, Gavin, and Cathal returned on Wednesday, they told us of their meeting with several women at our boundary. One of them indicated that she thought using a drone could be of great assistance in finding lost cattle. Currently it is very time consuming and not very efficient task.

“As to those with me, Allen, Brian, Cass, Niamh, and Brianna are fellow elders of the tribe that live on and manage the ranch. Liam, Cathal, and Gavin oversee aspects of our ranch operations.”

Susan nodded then said, “I think it was Liam who indicated what brought them to the boundary fence. When I heard the reason, it occurred to me that that searching for them using a drone might be a more efficient alternative. At the time, I wasn’t sure what a drone’s limitations were, but I knew that our security staff used them. Since then I’ve spoken with Jan and she thinks drones could assist you with that task. I shared what I learnt from her yesterday with Liam.”

“He told us. Can you tell us more?”

“I think Jan should do that,” replied Susan and nodded toward Jan.

Jan responded, “My name is Jan. There are three of us who are quite familiar with drones. We use them to monitor activity in the canyon and a bit beyond it. Besides monitoring an area, they can be used to map an area. Since Susan advised us of your interest, we’ve prepared a demonstration of their ability to see cattle in a field. We think the demonstration will give you a better idea of its suitability. To prepare for the demonstration, let’s review various types drones and their capabilities.” Seeing all of their guests were receptive, she projected a photo of a drone on the screen along with its capabilities. This was followed by showing other types of drones available and noted the differences in their capabilities.

“That pretty well covers the available drones that we think are suitable. Unfortunately we don’t have hard copies at the moment, but we will print the presentation and send it to you. Alternatively, we could give you a copy of the presentation on a CD or email it to you. Now, unless you have some questions, let’s go see the demonstration. After the demonstration, we will come back here and so we can decide on what is next. As food for thought, we currently have drones like the initial one you saw. We have both normal and IR sensors, so if desired we could do a trial search over some of your range that is near us. For IR sensor the best time would be after dusk and around sunrise as it will maximize temperature differences. If you decide to acquire one, we are willing to assist you with its acquisition and set up. Bear in mind we are not experts, so what we would be contributing is our experience in using them.”

“So this technique wouldn’t be of much use from mid spring to fall,” queried Allen.

“I think that would be true for thickly forested areas or areas with brush that is considerably taller than the cattle. Even so, if the brush isn’t very thick, I think you could tell that something was there.”

“I think before we go further, we need to see it functioning,” said Jason.

Jan said, “Well in that case if you will follow me, we can do that.”

As the group left the conference room, Kim said to Madeline, “Considering the time this is taking, I will advise the cooks that we may need a small luncheon buffet in here about lunch time.”

“Good idea.”

It was well over an hour before the group returned to the conference room from the demonstration. Everyone took the opportunity to visit the refreshments before sitting down.

Jan said, “From the comments I heard during the demonstration, you are seriously considering acquiring a drone.”

“Yes,” responded Brian, with Liam, Cathal, and Gavin nodding. “Now that we’ve seen its capabilities, we think it has the potential to assist us in other ways in addition to locating missing cattle. Earlier you offered to assist us in doing this. We hope that offer still stands.”

“It does. Since we are all together, why don’t we pull together a preliminary plan for what you wish to accomplish.”

“Good,” replied Jason, with Allen and Brian nodding in agreement.

Madeline said, “Can we hold that effort a bit, as I think you should know more about us and this location?” Seeing no objections she continued, “Susan, since you are fairly new, would you do that?”

From the look on Susan’s face, it was obvious that she had been surprised. “I’ll try since this is a surprise. I hope my fellow residents will please speak up if I overlook something. Lone Pine operates as a long term residence for adult women. Nearly all of the women are pregnant when they arrive. Most if not all have very little or no family support and are short on funds to support themselves. This place provides their care and through outside contacts arranges for all the babies born here. They are placed with the family formally adopting them shortly after birth. During the residents time here, many take online courses to improve their education and marketable skills. A large number of residents operate a business from here. It could be one that provides secretarial services to a business that doesn’t need a physical office. In doing this, they handle correspondence and email, answering the phone, and other tasks that can be handled remotely. Another is simply as an answering service. Also among our residents, we have programmers, web designers, web mistresses, and others offering services that can be provided remotely.

“Since the all of the residents are women, we are rather relaxed in our daily wear. Some refer to our dress code as clothing optional. To me, a more accurate description would be minimal clothing. Even so it covers more than most swim wear. So if you are invited beyond this segment of the building, you now know what to expect. From my perspective, looking is fine, staring not so much.

“As you may have noted or observed, in the past, our interaction with the surrounding community has been very limited. This was done for several reasons. One is that extremist religious organizations have threatened to physically destroy us and this location. The second is that we know of two criminal organizations who would like to take over this location. Now you might be thinking, so what has changed?

“Since Lone Pine has been here the attitude toward unattached women giving their babies to adoptive parents has changed. In light of this, we’ve recently decided to interact more with our neighbors. This decision was made quite recently. We think that by being acquainted with our neighbors, it will improve the security for everyone in the area.

“Going back to dressage, when we are out and about, we dress similar to the way Lena and I are dressed today. When horseback riding, we wear leggings along with our skirt.

“With respect to our home here, in some respects the environment is very similar to a sorority or bunkhouse. Typically two women share a two room suite. We have a gym, swimming pool, and exercise areas. We dine together. Last but not least, we have a clinic that focuses on women’s needs and birthing.

“Questions?”

“Why did you go into so much detail, as it doesn’t seem necessary?” inquired Niamh.

“Well perhaps not today, but with more interaction between us, you would likely become more acquainted with our activities here. By sharing this information now, you know about us, so there is no need to wonder. Another benefit to us is that perhaps you will have the opportunity to correct any misinformation.”

“Ah...,” responded Liam with a smile, “so now we have the facts so we can correct the gossips.”

“Good luck with that,” responded Cass causing several to chuckle.

Brianna added, “And by interacting more with their neighbors, you all become a known entity rather than someone to be suspicious of. We’ve attempted to take a similar path with I think some success.”

Jason looked at the other elders then said, “Jan, we would like for you and your associates to assist us in evaluating whether drones can assist us. If that effort shows it to be useful, then we would like your assistance in obtaining the appropriate equipment and then setting it up. Liam, Cathal, and Gavin will likely be leading this project for us. We will compensate you for your assistance.”

Looking over at Liam, Cathal and Gavin, he added with a smile, “Don’t worry you will still get to ride and you will have help.”

“Thanks,” they replied.

Turning to Madeline, Jason said, “We think it would be advantageous to put at least one narrow gate in our boundary fence. By doing that, the travel time between our locations by horseback will be considerably less than coming by vehicle via the county roads.”

“I think that would be fine. I’ll inform the ranch who is leasing the pasture that narrow gates will be placed in the boundary fence.”

“I think we know, but who is leasing your pasture.”

“Primarily, the Bar H, Samuel Hawkins,” replied Madeline. “They lease acreage between here, the county road, and your boundary, as well as to the west. SK Ranch and DoubleM lease some along the western boundary.”

“We’ve found the Bar H easy to work with,” noted Allen. “I think we’ve only had limited contact with the other two ranches.”

Jan inquired, “Do you want to outline a project plan now?”

Jason responded, “While that is a tantalizing suggestion, we should discuss this effort at a Council meeting before taking that step. So, I think it would be more productive for us to look over the information you’ve shown us. We need to discuss how we see the drones assisting us with managing the herd. Then in a few days, Liam, Cathal, and Gavin will contact you to set up a meeting to work out a project scope and goals.”

“Excellent. We look forward, to getting together.”

“Any other topics?” queried Madeline.

Lena said, “We are going to replace our pole barn with a stable. We were wondering if you would have a recommendation as to who we could hire to remove the old barn?”

Brian quickly asked, “What are you going to do with the material?”

“We haven’t resolved that aspect, as we thought it would depend on the contractor. In our opinion, we think that the barn is structurally in very good condition but not really suitable for its current use. So perhaps the contractor would want the material as a part of their fee.”

“An arrangement like that has been done before. Once I see what you have, I may have a suggestion.”

“It sounds like you have selected a builder,” noted Jason.

“Yes. We chose Best Built Custom Stables in part due to materials they will use. We have drawings here, if you would like to see them.”

“Sure.”

She then passed out copies.

After studying them for a bit, Jason said, “Very nice. Who designed this for you?”

Blushing Lena said, “Well it was something that I have dreamt of for a long time. So while I had the layout pretty well defined, Susan assisted in finalizing the design. I have to admit her assistance greatly improved it. Even so the builder suggested a few minor changes when they submitted their quote. We accepted both as they were improvements.”

“So how soon will they start?”

“We don’t have a date, but my impression is with in a month to six weeks. In setting this up, we overlooked two items. The major one being the need for a separate building to store hay and feed. For that, we think a metal building with a concrete floor would be suitable. So we are looking for a source for that. The other issue was how to care for the horses during stable construction, however we think we have that sorted.”

Allen responded, “We have several people who work for a local company that sells and builds metal buildings suitable for that purpose. We’ve purchased several buildings from them. I’ll send you their contact info.”
