8th Wednesday – Lone Pine -

As Susan, Tracey, and Steve were entering the gym for Tai Chi, Lena joined them.

“Good morning,” said Susan, Tracey, and Steve.

“Good morning. Are you ready for our outing?” responded Lena.

“You bet. I’ve wondered what dawn looks like from the ridge on the east side of the canyon.”

“Now that would be an interesting sight, but lets wait for warmer weather before we do that. It looked like the dew was pretty heavy this morning. While I haven’t checked, I suspect today is going to be pretty cool.”

“Well I was planning on wearing a drovers coat over a skirt with leggings and a jacket, as I did before.”

“Sounds like a good choice. That is pretty much what I planned to wear.” Looking around she saw Janet nearby then said, “Shall we begin.”

With that Susan took her place at the front of the group then Janet rang the chime. Once everyone was in position she started the music.

After breakfast as Susan, Tracey, and Steve entered the suite, Susan said, “I need to get dressed for our outing.”

She was nearly dressed when she heard Steve exclaim, “Well it now looks like we are going to have a gaggle of visitors while you are out enjoying your ride.”

As she entered the sitting room Susan enquired, “What’s up?”

“Well it appears that those visiting us will now include the DEA.”

“Okay. You might tactfully suggest to Madeline or Kim that they should close the entrance to the escape tunnels.”

“I’ll check when I let them know of the ‘surprise’ visitors.”

Tracey said, “That is a nice looking outfit. I thought about buying one when we were at the outfitter, but wasn’t sure it would be used beyond this trip.”

“Well you could order one online. Our outfits are a little different than those you saw at the outfitter.”

“What do you mean?”

With that Susan raised the front of her skirt. In doing so she revealed that she was wearing only a skirt and leggings that ran from just below her crotch to her ankles.

“I never expected that,” exclaimed Tracey.

Smiling Susan said, “It does give you an interesting sensation when sitting bare ass in the saddle. The skirts are just long enough to minimize the possibility of showing more than is intended.”

“I think I’ll pass for now, but perhaps when we visit the next time I’ll try riding that way.”

“So you are planning on visiting again?”

“Oh ... definitely,” she replied with Steve nodding in agreement. “That’s okay?”

“Definitely,” Susan replied as she picked up her new drovers coat. “See you around 5 or so.”

“Have fun,” responded both Steve and Tracey.

After Steve checked the rest of his emails, he said, “Let’s go visit Madeline and Kim.”

When Steve and Tracey entered Hall A, they found both Madeline and Kim in the visitors reception area. “Madeline,” said Steve, “I received an email indicating that our visitors would include a DEA contingent.”

Madeline frowned then after a moment smiled as she responded, “Well, you might say, the more the merrier.” After the laughter subsided, she added, “Any clues as to why?”

“Nope. I suspect Immigration and DEA will want to search the building. In light of that Susan wondered if it wouldn’t be wise to seal off the escape tunnels. I presume when you do that their presence is hidden.”

Kim responded, “That was taken care of first thing this morning. So what do you think is behind all of this?”

“I am not sure. It could be someone simply raising the question as to why the site is so secretive. Then planting the idea that it could be because something nefarious occurs here. So the agencies are prodded in to doing a surprise visit as opposed to a raid.”

“Now a raid could trigger all sorts of unintended consequences,” cautioned Madeline. “Our emergency procedures don’t differentiate between a government agency conducting a surprise visit and an attack by others. As we have, other locations like this have been actively threatened by religious extremist. Another real threat is a criminal organization trying to do so by force.”

Kim added, “At night it would be difficult, if not impossible to distinguish who it was from a distance. Is it very likely?”

“Don’t know,” responded Steve. “I suspect that the Trustees know if an agency becomes interested in their activities. As to how they learn that, I don’t know. As to the consequences of unannounced visits, I would suggest you share your concerns and their basis.”

Meanwhile in the barn, Lena, Beth, Lauren, Enola, Susan, and Crystal were saddling their horses in preparation for their outing. Once the horses were all saddled, Lena went around and checked each one to be sure that everything was done correctly. When she finished she said, “Looks good. Does everyone have their lunch, water, and a weapon?”

“I don’t have a weapon,” responded Enola. “I never thought of needing one.”

“Well, you probably won’t need one but we prefer that all riders carry one. We keep a collection in the tack room. I presume that you are familiar with using one.”

“I have experience with both a pistol and rifle.”

“Good,” replied Lena as she walked to the tack room. She soon returned with a pistol and holster. “This holster will attach to the saddle horn. The pistol is loaded.”

“Thanks,” as Enola took the holster and attached it to the saddle horn.

Lena looked around then said, “To me it looks like we are all anxious to head out. So let’s do it.”

With that Susan led Dante out of the barn, then mounted him. She inhaled a bit when her bare ass touched the saddle. She paused a short distance from the barn, then looked back to see how the others were doing. Once everyone was mounted, she urged Dante forward turning toward the meadow west of the barn. Out in the meadow, she turned north at a brisk walk. After a bit she began making a turn toward the north side of the canyon. When they reached the tree line, there was a brief search for a path that ran up over the ridge. A little over an hour had passed before they reached the top of the ridge around the canyon.

When they paused at the top to look around Susan said, “It looks like Lone Pine is about to have some visitors.”

Marcy added, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen six vehicles visit at one time since I’ve been here.”

Susan said, “My thought for this outing was to head north a ways then at some point, we turn toward the east before returning home.”

Enola exclaimed, “That is a refreshing thought!” Seeing several puzzled looks she added, “Well isn’t Lone Pine now our home?”

“Well yes,” responded Marcy. “However, I don’t think I’ve heard it expressed as that. So thank you.”

Smiling she responded, “You’re welcome.”

Susan noticed that they were all smiling before she began descending the shallow slope toward the meadow. As she did, she wondered what was behind the visitors.

At Lone Pine, the chime sounded several times in Hall A, Kim said, “That is likely our visitors in six vehicles. That sensor is a short distance this side of the county road. There is a second one at the last cattle guard.”

They waited in Madeline’s office until the group had walked up to the front door. After trying the door, they rang the door bell.

Kim walked out to the front door and opened it. She said, “Good morning. What brings you to our door?”

“We are here to check out your facility,” responded a man pushing her back as the with the others followed him inside.

Kim demanded as she backed up, “Who are you?”

“My group is from the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. I am Elaine Thomas. We’re here cause, we’ve received some negative comments regarding the care of your live stock. I don’t know why the others are here.”

As the group pushed Kim back and Ms Thomas was speaking, Madeline, Steve, and Tracey stepped out of Madeline’s office to essentially block the hall.

“My name is Eaton Smith, I am leading a group from Immigration. We are here to follow up on reports that there are illegal immigrants living and working here.”

“My name is Jason Stokes, I am leading a group from DEA. We are to follow up on reports of drug activity taking place here.”

Madeline introduced herself then added, “Are any of you aware of the purpose of this facility?”

After hearing no response, Madeline continued with firm tone, “This facility is an extend stay location for single women, in particular women who become pregnant and have no support. Some would term them as being ‘unwed mothers.’ Due to the negative opinion some have of them, we attempt to maintain a very low profile. Another aspect of this facility, is that since it is usually occupied by only women it is clothing optional. Currently, we do have a male visitor on site. So let us move to the conference room down the hall, so we can address how we can satisfy your need for information about us.”

“We demand that you allow us to begin immediately searching this building,” responded Jason Stokes.

Steve enquired, “If you are searching for drugs, don’t you usually use dogs?” After a pause, he added, “So where are the dogs?”

“Who are you?” demanded Mr. Stokes.

“Steve Murphy, today representing the Briana Trustees, who own and operate this facility.”

“That is convenient.”

“True, but my associate and I have been here for nearly a week. I can assure all of you that we are hiding nothing. So to proceed with a minimum amount of turmoil, shall we move to the conference room to sort out how to move forward with your fact finding effort.”

Ms. Thomas firmly replied, “Sounds like a good idea.”

Based on reactions Steve saw initially, he expected DEA and Immigration to object.

After moving to the conference room, Kim placed a book on the table and said, “Would each of you sign the visitors log?” Her request was met with some grumbling. She added, “I will have coffee and water brought in shortly.”

Madeline then said, “Ms. Thomas, I presume you are interested in seeing the barn. Is that all?”

“Even though it is outside the scope for our visit, we would like to see the food service facilities.”

“We are agreeable. Unfortunately, the woman who manages the horse barn is out on a horseback ride and won’t be back until late today.”

Kim offered, “Why don’t I ask Marcy to show them around, as she is familiar with the activities in the barn.”

Madeline replied, “Good, choice.”

A few minutes later Marcy entered the conference room wearing only a short skirt and a quarter cup bra. Her appearance caused a few gasps as she said, “Oh, I didn’t realize there were visitors.”

“Marcy, Ms. Thomas and her associates would like to see the barn and food service areas. Could you show them those areas?”

“Sure.” With that those with Ms Thomas began to stand up.

Madeline said, “Before you go, a couple of items. Since there is normally only women on site, and many are pregnant, Marcy’s attire is typical. All the residents know that there is a man on site temporarily, so none should be shocked when they see you. I presume all of you will be here for lunch, as I suspect it will likely begin before you have completed your tasks.”

Seeing no objections, she said, “Marcy would you let the cooks know that we will have a full complement for lunch plus twelve.” On noticing the puzzled expressions she added, “We have six residents out on a horseback ride and there are eighteen of you. Lunch is buffet style, so knowing how many helps the cooks.”

After Ms. Thomas and her group left with Marcy, Madeline asked, “With respect to immigration, we have copies of each resident’s passport on file along with a copy of their birth certificate. So how do you want to proceed?”

“What about the staff?” asked one woman.

“They are all residents.”

“So how many residents are there?”

“Currently, there are sixty-two residents plus our visitors Steve and Tracey.”

The woman looked at Mr. Smith, then said, “I think checking your files will be sufficient along with joining you all for lunch.”

Mr. Smith inquired, “Would there be a problem with us interacting with the residents during lunch?”

“I wouldn’t expect there to be,” responded Madeline.

“Mr. Stokes I suspect your group would like to look around the facility. To do that I will give you a map and ask that you go around in groups of two. We will provide two residents to accompany each of your groups. Will that be acceptable to you?”

“Unusual, but I think it will suffice considering everything we’ve heard. Now knowing the purpose of this facility, having illegal drugs on site seems a bit incongruent. As to whether my supervisor would agree, I am not sure.”

“Well let’s hope it is sufficient.”

“We will need to pay you for lunch. Actually, all of us need to do that.”

Madeline gave Steve a puzzled look.

Then Tracey said, “Lunch will be $20.00. If are paying by check make it out to the Briana Foundation. Each of you will receive a receipt which will note the site along with Briana Foundation.”

“Why?” asked an attendee.

“Cause, all financial transaction are handle by the Trusts’ accounting department.”

“Okay.”

It was a little after noon when Lena said, “That group of trees over there looks like it might be a good place to have lunch.”

“Lunch sounds like a grand idea,” responded Lauren.

“So where are we?” inquired Enola.

“We are right here,” responded Crystal then began laughing.

“Funny ... I was thinking in terms a spot on a map or in relation to home.”

“Well I think I can show you after I finish eating,” noted Susan. “Just off hand, I believe, we are northeast of home, and not very far from the ranch’s boundary.”

Beth said, “Doesn’t that look like riders over that way?”

After the group looked in the direction Beth pointed, several responded, “Could be.”

It was shortly after lunch when Madeline, Kim, Steve, and Tracey met with the group from the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. Ms. Thomas said, “We have found no issues with your operation. The barn is sufficient for its current use and based on what we saw the animals are well cared for. As to the food service area, we didn’t find any issues. We did make a couple of suggestions which are not noted in our report. In thinking about our suggestions, it would be better to think of them as preferences. Between us, I wish all of the places we visit were as nice as yours.”

“Thank you,” responded Madeline. “As to the barn, we are currently developing plans to replace it with an actual stable, along with an arena, and support building. The support building would be primarily for hay and feed storage.”

“Would you consider sharing the plans with us when they are finalized?”

“I don’t see why not. Our intent is to begin the project in the next few weeks. Lena wants to get it started before others start their summer projects.”

“She was one of those out on the horseback ride.”

“Yes.

“As our purpose for coming here is complete, we will be leaving. If you encounter issues within the scope of our department that you need assistance with or unsure how to handle, please contact me or our office.”

After shaking hands Kim and Madeline watched the group exit the building. On returning to the conference room, they were joined by the groups from Immigration and DEA.

Mr Stokes said, “Just before lunch I called my supervisor and asked what was behind us being here. He wanted to know why. I basically told him that the claims he had received about this place were completely false. After giving a more detailed explanation of what we found, he told me that he would call me back. I heard from him after lunch. He asked me to apologize for bothering you, so I am. I would also like to apologize for my attitude when we first met.”

“Apology accepted. Did you enjoy your interaction with the residents?”

“Yes, I did, I think we all did. Your residents are definitely not the type of people with whom we usually interact.”

An associate added, “It is good to see young people overcoming what could have been a difficult situation. Not sure I said that very well.”

Tracey said, “We understood your intent.”

Mr. Smith said, “We are satisfied with all of your documentation. I think all of us enjoyed interacting with your residents at lunch. Like Jason, I enquired as to what prompted them sending us here. It was in part due to the frequent visits by trucks from rather distant cities. An individual with political connections made the case that it was indicative of human trafficking. In hindsight, we should have done a better job of validating the claims. I will say that lunch was great. So that is a wrap for us and we will be on our way.”

Madeline responded, “We are pleased that you chose to visit us the way you did today. We understand your need to make surprise visits. We hope that in the future if you choose to surprise us with a visit, that you will identify yourselves as you turn into our lane.”

Mr. Stokes started to speak but Madeline held up her hand, then continued with, “Why am I making this request? Well we have received threats from religious extremist due to the presence of unmarried pregnant women living here. We have been made aware of several criminal groups who like to take over this location. As some of you likely noticed, we put a lot of effort in monitoring our surroundings which is due to those threats and our remoteness. So unexpected visitors, especially at night, will likely walk into a violent confrontation.”

“So you knew we were coming today?” responded Mr. Stokes.

“No. Several days ago we heard that the Department of Agriculture would be making a visit in the near future. Your arrival at the same time was a surprise. Since it was daylight, the logo’s on the vehicles told us who you were.”

After looking at his associates he responded, “Well I think it is good to know that our arrival was a surprise. As to announcing our arrival on turning into the lane, I think we are comfortable with that. Whether others will be agreeable, I can’t make any promises.”

Mr. Smith added, “I think we can note your request and reason in our file, but it will be the agent in charge’s decision. Considering this location, I think, most of us would be agreeable.”

“Is human trafficking an issue around here?” enquired Steve. “The reason I am asking is that last week when we came back from Casper, we were stopped by the Highway Patrol for a vehicle check. The Department of Agriculture was there as well, checking the livestock.”

“I think rustling is more of an issue in this area. However, I am not sure our people have considered that livestock trailers could be used for trafficking. I’ll look into that.”

With that the two groups shook hands with Madeline, Kim, Tracey and Steve as they said good bye.

Once the two groups were headed down the lane, Madeline said with a sigh, “I am glad that is over with.”

Steve responded, “I think it went very well. I was a bit worried when you began your warning about surprise visits, but I think they understood our concern regarding unexpected visitors especially at night.

Tracey said, “I wonder what the residents think of the visitors.”

Kim replied, “We should have some idea around dinner time but definitely by tomorrow. From my perspective, once we were past their blustering it seemed to go pretty well. From what I’ve heard those searching the facility were respectful of personal property but were thorough. However, from my stand point once was enough.”

“I agree,” responded Madeline.

As they began getting ready to remount their horses, Lena said, “It looks like those riders are closer than they were when we first noticed them.”

“They are but they don’t seem to be coming toward us,” responded Beth.

Susan said, “Well it could be they are riding along the boundary fence as the distance looks about right.”

“So why don’t we ride over that way,” suggested Crystal.

“Suits me,” responded several.

It was some twenty minutes later when they reached the boundary fence. When they did, they turned toward the three approaching riders and followed the fence.

When they were near each other, Lena said, “Good afternoon.”

“That it is,” responded a rider. “We are surprised to see other riders in this area.”

“We often ride but usually don’t come this far from home.”

“If you don’t mind, where is home?”

“We live in the large home located in the canyon to the southwest over the low ridge.”

“Ah, so someone does live there.” His comment caused the women to smile. “Our people have often wondered that even though the nearest rancher claims that people do live there.”

“In the past we’ve been rather recluse. My name is Susan, with me are Lena, Beth, Enola, and Crystal.” As she spoke their names the women nodded and waved.

“My name is Denaki or Liam. With me are Cathal also known as Hototo and Gavin who is also known as Queensu. As you’ve likely guessed we live north of here. I should note that while this ranch abuts the reservation, it is not a part of it. We are Apsaálooke.”

“What brings you this down this way?”

“We are looking for stray cattle. While we were this close to the boundary, we decided to check the fence. So far it looks to be in good shape.”

Gavin added, “We don’t often have cattle near this boundary. To be honest, while we are looking for stray cattle, we really suspect that they have been stolen.”
