8th Saturday – Kitty’s Bed & Breakfast -

It was shortly after breakfast when the entrance alarm beeped. Looking at the monitor George saw that it was a Sheriff’s car.

By the time the Sheriff’s car reached the house, George was standing on the porch. When the car stopped, George walked out to it as the Sheriff got out.

George said, “Good morning, Wilma. I haven’t seen you in a while.”

“Yes, it has been. You are looking good.”

“As are you. Would you like a cup of coffee?”

“Alison’s coffee, certainly,” she replied with a smile.

After getting their coffee, Wilma said, “How is business?”

“Well until yesterday, we had a pretty full house this week.”

“Good to hear that. A lot of places don’t get many guests this time of year.”

“True. The weather was nice so they got in some hiking and horseback riding. What brings you out this way?”

“I heard your guests bought several horses and a horse trailer.”

George laughed, “You have good sources. Lena came to sell two and buy four. She left with six and a friend of hers, bought a stallion from Samuel. It was the one his staff had difficulty riding. Her friend didn’t and I’ve never seen a woman or a man interact with a horse as well as her friend did.”

“I heard that as well but didn’t quite believe it at first.”

“Well I saw it, and was very impressed.”

“Then I guess you’ve heard about the three horses that were found saddled and left unattended along the side a road Thursday morning.”

“Sure did. Seems odd that someone would do that. Did you find out who they belonged to?”

“That was easy due to the stuff in the saddle bags. So we know the owners, but we haven’t been able to locate them. They worked for Walters. We did find tracks leading back into the nearby hills. There were some leading in this direction until they crossed the path of a herd. By any chance, were you all riding out in that area recently?”

“Yes, a group of us went riding out that way. We crossed the road then looped around coming back a different way. I could probably sketch it out on a map if that would help.”

“Nah ... I think that explains the multiple hoof prints. What is odd, is that those three wranglers apparently went off leaving their horses. Although one of Walters’ staff claimed he was suppose to pick them up Thursday morning. They didn’t show up at the agreed to pickup point which was not where the horses were found.”

“That is an odd set of incidents. Good luck on sorting it out.”

“Well thanks for the information.”

George walked Wilma out to her car. He smiled as he watched as her drive down the lane. He was a bit surprised that she didn’t mention Luke or the incident at Walter’s involving Luke.

8th Saturday – Lone Pine -

When Susan opened her eyes, she smiled as she realized that Tracey and Steve were beside her. Glancing over at the clock, she could see that it would be several minutes before its chime sounded. So she used the time to enjoy being so close to her friends. Then just before the alarm was to sound, she reached over Tracey to cancel it. In doing so, her movement woke both Tracey and Steve.

They each said, “Good morning,” then exchanged kisses.

After using the bathroom, Susan put on a half cup bra and a skirt. On seeing how she was dressing Tracey enquired, “Think I would be okay without a bra.”

“Yes. You can wear one of my skirts. The waist is adjustable. If you want a snack, there are granola bars in the cabinet above the refrigerator.”

On reaching the group in the gym, Susan said, “Good morning. With me are my guests, Tracey and Steve.”

“Good morning,” responded the group.

A few moments later Janet rang a chime then said, “Positions, everyone.”

After Susan suggested places for Tracey and Steve to stand, she took her place at the front of the group. When Janet saw everyone was in position, she started the music.

When they finished, Susan said, to Tracey and Steve, “Ready for a swim?”

As they walked over to the pool, Marcy, Lori, and Lena joined them. At the pool, Susan, Lori, and Marcy slipped off their clothes and dove in. When Susan surfaced she noticed that Steve and Tracey were just entering the pool. Seeing they were okay, she began swimming laps. On finishing, she swam over to where they were sitting on the side of the pool.

With a look of amazement Tracey inquired, “Do you do this every morning?”

“Pretty much. I’ve done Tai Chi for a long time but t is more fun to do it with a group. For my aerobic exercise, I prefer swimming as it easier on my knees. Typically I follow swimming with using an elliptical or lifting weights to strengthen my upper body, but not today. I think it is time for a shower then breakfast.”

As they were leaving Susan’s suite, she said, “After breakfast, there are a few things I need to take care of. You are welcome to tag along or you can use my PC. Once my tasks are done, I think a tour is on the agenda.”

Steve responded, “Since it is a Saturday, I think I would like to tag along.”

Tracey added, “I’m game as I can catch up either tonight or tomorrow.”

“Super,” responded Susan with a smile.

As they entered the dining room, Susan noted, “Breakfast and lunch are a buffet.”

After making their selections, they followed Susan to an empty table off to the side of the room. On reaching the table she said, “Is this okay?”

“Sure,” responded Tracey looking around. “Think others will join us.”

“Probably.”

Just then Lena and Lauren walked up and Lena inquired, “Can we join you?”

“Certainly,” responded Steve smiling. “Things seem to become quite interesting when you are around.”

Lena stuck out her tongue then replied, “I could say the same about your presence or several others.”

Her comment prompted several to laugh.

“Well I thought the week was worthwhile and I enjoyed it,” added Lauren. “Lena, when do you think we can ride the new horses?”

“I would think in a few days. Ask me tomorrow. Today, we need to clean out the stalls and brush the horses. I need to check how well the saddles we have fit the new horses.”

“Do we have enough tack?” queried Susan.

After a moment Lena replied, “Well since we have added horses I suspect we do not. So next week we should see about contacting the saddle maker. Perhaps we should ride up to the reservation or contact the tribe operating the adjacent ranch, as they likely have one or have a suggestion.”

“Well, in the meantime, we could ride bare back.”

“I am sure that you and I can, but I am not sure about any others,” responded Lena.

Tracey suggested, “You could let them try doing that in the paddock or pasture, as that should be safe enough.”

“True but I am not going to ask anyone to,” responded Lena.

As they left the dining room, Susan said, “We need to change before going out to the barn.”

“Okay. See you there, as I have work clothes out there,” responded Lena.

In the suite, Susan, Tracey, and Steve changed clothes. Before leaving for the barn, Steve quickly checked for messages. Rather than use the elevator, they went down the stairs then exited the building via Hall F door.

Steve said, “I expected you to use the tunnel.”

“We usually do. I thought that by going this way you would see more of the surrounding area. After the chores are done, we can take the tour of the building that I promised you. If there is time and you would like to, we can take a horseback ride around the canyon.”

“I like your suggestion,” responded Tracey as they walked over to the barn.

On entering the barn, they saw Dante and several other horses watching the activity. Dante nickered when Susan reached him. After patting him for a few moments, she led him out to the corral. After she unclipped his lead, she patted him before returning to the barn.

Inside the barn, she joined Tracey and Steve who were already assisting the others. When they finished, the horses were brought back to their stalls, then fed and made sure that they had water.

Susan said, “There is a shower room we can use before going back.”

“Great,” said Tracey as she washed off her boots.

In the shower room they found Lena just finishing up. Susan said, “So how are your horses?”

“Very good,” she responded. “They seem to have adjusted well to the new environment. Best all, the horses seem to get along. We’ll have to see what is like when the mares come into heat.”

On exiting the shower area, they found Lena was still there.

Steve said, “To me, it seems that this barn wasn’t intended to be a stable.”

“I agree but it is what we have,” responded Lena.

“Think it will be suitable, if you and Susan begin breeding and raising horses especially considering winter weather.”

Lena frowned, “The condition of the barn will make doing that more difficult. However, it is what we have.”

“Well Susan mentioned that several of you were going to propose increasing the residents interaction with your neighbors. Operating a horse breeding and training facility here could be an aspect of that as you will have more visitors. As to the barn, I think that in order to be successful, you will need better housing for the horses.”

Lena paused with a thoughtful expression then said, “You are correct. The barn is just barely adequate in the winter. However, to replace it with a suitable stable will, I think, be quite expensive. I don’t have the funds and I don’t know if the property owners do or are even willing to do that.”

“Well, that I can find out. To make it easier, could you give me an idea of what you think would be an optimum stable.”

Smiling Lena replied, “I can do that quite easily.”

Tracey noted, “I think someone has been dreaming.”

“Wishing might be a better characterization,” responded Lena with a smile. “I’ll put my thoughts together and give you an outline tomorrow.”

“Great.”

Susan said, “Lena, I am going to show Tracey and Steve the rest of the facility, do you want to join us?”

“I think, I’ll pass, but thanks for the offer.”

Susan said to Tracey and Steve, “We’ll go back this way.” With that she led them to a door. On opening it, she said, “This is the way we returned to the building yesterday after unloading the horses. It is also the way we normally go back and forth.”

“Now your earlier comment makes sense,” responded Tracey as they entered the elevator.

Seeing Lena’s puzzled expression, Susan said, “We walked over from Hall F exit.”

“Ah, now I under stand. The tunnel is a nice feature especially when it is raining, cold or snowing.”

“So the wranglers only see you all, when you are riding,” noted Tracey.

“Pretty much. Occasionally, we interact with them when out riding, but not often.”

On reaching the main elevator Lena said, “I’ll see you all later. Thanks for the help with the barn cleanup.”

“You’re welcome,” responded Tracey and Steve as Susan gave Lena a peck on the cheek.

As Lena entered the elevator, Susan said, “Now we are essentially two stories below the building’s common area. The building has two levels below grade and they have high ceilings. Since we are close let’s visit the data center first.” With that she led them toward a path between stacks of crates.

“Are you sure?” asked Steve.

“Yep,” she responded with a smile.

After several turns they came to a door with a hand pad next to it. Susan placed her hand on it and the door chimed. She said, “Entering with two visitors.”

“Confirmed,” responded a voice.

“You all have some serious security,” noted Steve with an amazed expression.

“I thought the same thing, then after considering where we are and how some would react to our activity, it makes a lot of sense. It is also perhaps not enough. Some of us think we can improve our situation by knowing our neighbors. While there is some risk in doing that, the question is will doing so increase or decrease our security.”

“Good point.”

After they looked around for a bit, Susan said, “This is essentially the new network setup that the 3Js put together shortly after they arrived. In doing so, the business activity was split off to be on a completely separate segment from the portion the residents use to access the internet and each other. Any questions?”

Frowning Steve responded, “The business activity wasn’t separate before.”

“Sort of, as access was based on permissions. Now it resides on its own server with improved access control. If you want more details you will need to ask one of the three Js.”

“Three Js?” responded Tracey with a puzzled expression.

Laughing Susan responded, “Yes, our security and network gurus, Jan, Jen and Jo.”

“Okay, that makes sense now.”

“Well shall we continue the tour?”

In response to their nods, Susan led them back out to the area by the elevator. From there, she led them down the tunnel to their emergency shelter. Next they went to the power plant then back to the hub then to the garage.

On seeing the vehicles Steve said, “That is quite a fleet.”

“It is sufficient to evacuate all of us. So depending on the situation, we can either run or hide. If we use the emergency shelter, the entrance from the sub basement common area disappears. Oops, I just realized that the horse’s safety is not included in the current plans.”

“Does everyone know about these options?”

“Sort of. The published procedure says if the alarm sounds then go to the sub basement. At that point, Security would direct them as appropriate.”

“In some respects this seems a bit much,” responded Steve.

“To me, the risks we can not counter are tornadoes and grass fires. If it is a physical attack by a group, we have other alternatives. This was felt to be necessary as we are a long way from any law enforcement. The castle doctrine applies here.”

“Sorry, my risk assessment went down the wrong track. What you all are doing, does make sense. So where to next.”

“Next is one level up, which shouldn’t take very long then to the main floor.” When they reached the basement, she said, “This level has storage rooms for supplies, the actual laundry, and a studio for making videos.”

“A studio?” queried Steve.

“Yes. Several residents have created a collection of erotic videos with reasonable story lines. I understand that many are available on the internet, however I don’t know the details. When I was told of the activity, it was a solicitation to participate. I was assured that the performers identity was obscured.” A few moments later when they approached the door to the studio, they found a sign saying, “Do Not Disturb.” Susan noted, “It looks like seeing the studio will need to wait.” With that they went back to the elevator.

On exiting the elevator on the ground floor, Susan said, “The clinic is this way.” On entering, she introduced Steve and Tracey to Nancy and her staff. After chatting a bit, Susan told of the incident with the abductors, and that the that three of them were intimate afterward. “So can you test us, so we can be sure I haven’t pick up something then shared it?”

“Sure,” replied Nancy. “I can do a visual assessment while taking a swab and a blood sample. It will be a couple of days before I have the results from the swab and blood sample.”

After looking at Tracey and Steve, Susan said, “Let’s do it. I think the possibility is small, but I would rather be sure.”

Both Tracey and Steve nodded in agreement.

When Nancy finished her evaluation of them, she said, “I will probably have the results back on Monday as a couple of people are going into town.”

As they left the clinic, they noticed activity in the dining room. Tracey said, “I suspect it is lunch time.”

“Good, I am hungry,” added Steve.

As they ate lunch several residents came by to say hi to Susan and in doing so they met Tracey and Steve.

On leaving the dining room and entering the Common area, Susan said, “Last night I pointed out the features of this area, so let’s look at the 2nd floor.”

Tracey looked at Steve then said, “Suits us.”
