7th Wednesday – Lone Pine – morning

Breakfast was ending when Kim summoned Madeline to the entrance. She arrived just as three wranglers approached the front entrance, and were preparing to dismount. Madeline and Kim went out to greet them wearing jackets, long skirts and boots.

As Madeline and Kim were greeting the wranglers, Jan and Jo joined them. They were wearing jackets, long skirts and boots.

A wrangler said, “Ms Madeline, we’ve seen those living here out riding around the canyon occasionally. We were wondering if anyone has seen any wild cats or other predators.”

When he spoke Jan realized that his voice was very similar to one of the intruder voices they had recorded. Jan and Jo eased over to take a closer look at the horses. While looking over the horses, they attached a miniature tracker and listening device to the horses hair near the front of the saddle.

Kim responded, “Not that any one has mentioned, and I think they would have. I would think that you would be more likely to see cats up up beyond the tree line. We encourage everyone to stay in the canyon’s pasture area when riding.”

“Thank you. If anyone sees some, please let one of us know.”

“Certainly. I am sure our horses would let us know.”

“Only if the cat was up wind. Anyway thank you for your time.”

As the wranglers moved off Kim said softly, “I wonder, if they will notice the cameras.”

“They will certainly see some,” responded Jo, “as we left the obvious ones. Due to seeing them, they will be less likely to take a closer look.”

“Good point.”

As they were entering the building, Jan said, “This evening Jo, Kim, and I are planning to visit a local dance hall.”

Madeline responded, “Kim mentioned it. Just be careful.”

“We have two purposes. One is to see first hand what they are like. The second is to see if the interaction between attendees is as noted in the stories we’ve heard.”

“That information could be useful.”

When Jan and Jo entered the common area, Jan said, “Besides his voice sounding like one of the intruders, I noticed that he never indicated the ranch they were from.”

“I think we should visit the Security Center and see what they are up to. If the trackers work, we may pickup some useful information.”

In the Security Center, Jo turned the radio receiver to the channel for the trackers. They heard a voice say, “Now that we are here, how do you want to do this.”

“Well lets look around for a clump of trees that offer a good view of where they are usually outside. Based on what I saw from the cave, they were always near the barn.”

“We need to wander around as we ease toward a suitable location.”

“Agreed.”

Deanne said, “Since they are riding, it will be easy to monitor where they go.”

Jan said, “Let’s record this channel.”

After watching the activity on the monitors for a bit, Jan said to Deanne, “We will leave it in your hands. Don’t hesitate to summon us.”

“I won’t. They are being rather bold in whatever they plan to do.”

Kitty’s Bed & Breakfast –

When Susan reached the kitchen, she found Alison pouring coffee into six travel mugs. “Good morning, I think.”

“Ah, every morning you wake up is a good morning,” responded Alison with a smile.

“True. I presume everyone is at the stable.”

“Those going to the auction are. Would you take these out to them?”

“Sure,” replied Susan as she picked up the mugs.

As she approached the horse trailer, Lena said, “Ah, you are just in time and best of all you are bringing coffee.”

After everyone took a mug, they entered the truck and were soon on their way.

It wasn’t long after turning on to the highway, they passed a side road. When they did, Jen noticed a truck setting on a side road some distance back from the intersection. It began moving when they passed the intersection. Looking back she saw it pulled on the highway then stayed some distance behind them until they turned in to the auction site. As they turned in, Jen saw Steve nod toward the mirror indicating he had also noticed the truck.

On entering the auction site, George gave Kathy directions to the unloading area. After unloading the two horses, it didn’t take Lena and George very long to get the horses checked in and placed in a stall. While they were doing that Kathy moved their rig to the parking area and disconnected the trailer.

When Lena and George joined them Susan said, “Now, I think it is time for breakfast.”

On entering the restaurant George said, “We have about an hour and a half before we should be at the auction.”

A hostess quickly showed them to a table. On their way through the dining room, they noticed several people stare at them and conversation diminish as they passed.

Once they were seated Steve said softly, “I’d say, we were noticed.” Several nodded and smiled on hearing his comment.

The waitress arrived with coffee before more could be said then after pouring coffee she took their orders.

Tracey inquired, “George, is this a typical crowd?”

“I don’t come here often enough to give you a good answer. I suspect most of this crowd is going to the auction.”

“I thought some of the looks we got were rather unwelcoming,” softly noted Lena.

Tracey responded, “I took the expressions as them wondering who we were.”

“I can go along with that.”

Kathy then said, “I hate to bring this up but we have a horse transportation problem.” Seeing the questioning looks she added, “We have five horses to transport and a trailer that only holds four.”

Lena responded, “Well we could arrange to board one, which would mean that we would need to come back fairly soon.”

George nodded affirmatively, then added, “We have room to board them.”

“Alternatively, you could buy another rig,” suggested Steve. “Wouldn’t you be better off by having another readily available? In any case, you do have more horses than you have transportation.”

“True, but I am not sure the funds are available to do that,” responded Lena. “I know at the moment I don’t. A suitable rig would probably cost two hundred thousand or more.”

“Well with another rig, it would make some things easier to accomplish,” responded Kathy. “However, I don’t have that much cash available although enough I could assist.”

“Well we were going shopping after the auction, so why don’t we take the time to see what is available,” suggested Tracey.

Everyone responded with a shrug.

On returning to the auction, they headed toward the arena. Their path took them past the stalls holding those to be sold. In passing, they casually took a look at the horses being sold. At two stalls, Lena paused for several moments before rejoining the group.

After the second time Susan inquired, “Did you see something that interests you?”

“Yes. There is a stallion and mare that would make a good addition to our group.”

Smiling Susan said, “You wouldn’t be considering raising and training horses would you?”

With a smile she replied, “Now that is an interesting thought.”

“Yea, right.” Susan chuckled on hearing her response. She didn’t realize that Steve and Tracey heard the exchange then glance at each other with a slight smile.

It was around half way through the auction when the stallion Lena had paused to look at was brought in to the arena. After hearing several bids, Lena frowned. To her they were exceptionally low. Then at the last moment after taking a deep breathe she raised the bid. The biding went back and forth between her and two others several times before her bid was accepted.

Kathy whispered, “Now we really have a transportation problem?”

“Well now a trip here will be for more than one horse,” softly noted Susan causing Kathy to snort.

Several horses later the mare Lena had looked at was brought in. As with the stallion, the bids started off low, so low that Lena again decided to bid. She waited until the bidding slowed before placing a bid. As before, the biding went back and fort between several others before her bid was accepted.

Since the horses they brought had sold earlier, Lena went to settle up with Kathy tagging along. Noting her expression, Susan and Steve followed along as they anticipated that she might need additional funds.

Later on their way back to meet the others at the truck, Lena said, “Thanks for the loan. I have the money, but it will take a few days to free it up.”

“Not a problem,” responded Susan. “Don’t be in a rush, just keep me informed.”

“Certainly,” she replied as she gave Susan a hug.

On reaching the truck Lena said, “Since we wanted to do some shopping, how about holding off on loading the horses until we are ready to return to Kitty’s.”

“Well, we’ve discussed three other activities while we were here,” responded George. “Since it is a bit early to have lunch, there is a nice tack shop near here with an excellent place to have lunch nearby. So if we do that, there should be time to look at trailers as well as clothes after lunch. We just need to watch the time since we need to pickup the horses and Alison expects us for dinner.”

Lena looked at the others, who all shrugged, then said, “So how do we get to the tack shop?”

At the tack shop, Lena and Kathy saw several items that they liked. Based on the literature, they were fairly certain that they were made by the saddle maker north of them. Along with Susan, they made a list of the items they were interested in, then confirmed that they could be ordered by phone.

After lunch they went to an outfitters where they purchased boots and riding clothes. While there Susan softly asked Lena where the bottomless riding pants were. Lena just smiled and shook her head. From there they went to a place that sold horse trailers and towing rigs. The dealer had several rigs that would easily transport six horses. Steve inquired as whether one could be picked up the same day it was purchased. After being assured that it could be done, the group headed back to the auction site to pickup the trailer and the horses Lena had purchased.

On returning to Kitty’s, they unloaded the horses. As they brushed the horses, they checked them over. Lena was relieved to find them in very good condition. She had been a bit worried as she hadn’t checked them over before bidding. With the examination complete, they were placed in stalls and fed.

As they were leaving the stable, George said, “Lena, you made a fine decision in buying them. I think you got them for a very good price. What led you to pick them?”

“Thanks. Not sure why I paused to examine them when we went through the barn. I was surprised at how low the bidding started. To me the initial bids were almost like stealing. While it wasn’t my intent to buy more horses, I think, I made a good decision to bid on them. Afterward, I was a bit worried as I hadn’t checked them as closely as I should have.”

“From my perspective you did good. Again, if want to you can leave them here for a while, as we currently have the space.”

“Thanks, but I really would like to take them back with us. Do you board horses?”

“Well we have, but not very often. We keep several horse for our guests to use and some guests often bring their horses with them.”

That evening during dinner the two groups who had gone hiking recounted their adventures. It was clear from their enthusiasm that both groups were very pleased with their adventure. In describing their hike, Joan noted, “One section of the trail was covered with a lot of cattle hoof prints but the segment wasn’t very long.”

George responded, “That trail crosses a path used to move cattle between several pastures so that is not surprising.”

After the group who went to the auction shared tales of their adventure, the topic of horse transport surfaced again.

“We can care for them until you can return,” offered George. “If you do, we would like permission to use them.”

Lena responded, “Thank you. However, we do need another unit to transport horses. Right now the issue I have is raising sufficient cash on short notice. Currently, we can get by with just the one trailer, however we are considering a change in how we operate. Currently, our horses are for recreation. There are now quite a few living at Lone Pine who are very good riders. So we have been considering whether we should offer temporary wrangler services to the ranches adjoining ours. Our group could be the ones doing the less skilled aspects of moving a herd or assisting during a round up. We are not sure whether it is a viable offering or not. The other concern is how well it would be received.”

“Interesting,” responded George. “I don’t know how it is around you all, but I’ve heard that the ranches around here have difficulty finding enough suitable staff during peak times.”

Susan added, “More recently, the possibility of Lena and I getting into breeding, raising and training horses has been tossed around.”

Smiling George said, “Well in that case, I thought the trailer rig prices were pretty reasonable.”

“Think they would knock ten percent off for immediate cash sale,” queried Steve. His comment caused several to silently gasp.

“Possibly. All you can do is make the offer.”

“Lena, would you be agreeable?”

“Yes, but I am not sure when I could cover the expense.”

“But having the trailer would be very useful to you all.”

“Oh, yes, definitely.”

“Then I’ll take care of the rest of the details.”

Sensing Lena unease, Susan added, “Relax, I suspect that Steve is likely using some of my funds.”

They exchanged observations they had made during the day as they finished dinner. Joan looked around then said, “It looks like every one has finished. I suggest we clear the table and find a more comfortable location to chat.”

When they finished clearing the table, Joan, Lilly and Marc as well as Lauren, Carol and Nathan went to their rooms. Susan looked at Tracey and Steve and smiled. Tracey winked at her.

On taking a seat in the lounge, they shared the different things that they had noticed during the day. Jen noted that she thought they had been followed at times. Steve indicated that he agreed with her observation.

During this Susan had a sense of uneasiness and after a bit said, “I think, I will go check on Dante.”

“Do you want company?” inquired Tracey with a concerned look.

“Nah. I just wanted to see how he was doing, so I shouldn’t be long.”

When Susan entered the stable, she thought it was darker than she remembered. She spoke softly as she opened Dante’s stall, then stepped in leaving the gate slightly ajar. As she lightly stroked his neck, he gently nudged her. After a few moments, she eased back out of the stall. When she turned to latch the gate, an arm wrapped around her. A drug saturated cloth covered her mouth and nose before she could scream. Susan struggled for a bit almost breaking free before being overcome by the drug.

A man softly said, “She is out,” as he lowered her to the ground. “One of you take her boots off then tie her ankles together.” He then placed a ball gag in her mouth and secured it. With the gag in place, he slid a bag over her head and secure it round her neck.”

A few moments later he said, “Well, I guess, I owe Luke an apology. I really didn’t believe him when he suggested that just disturbing the horse, would likely bring her to the stable. Now, we need to finish tying her up, and load her on that horse.”

After one of them had removed her boots, he laid them aside, then quickly tied her ankles together. Another bound her her wrists together as well as her elbows. While they were securing Susan, the man who had initially grabbed her, gave her a shot of a sedative. Their activity had caused Dante to nervously stamp. The man eased into the stall then carefully gave Dante a shot that would make him easier to handle. After waiting a few moments for the drug to take effect, he led Dante out of the stall. With Dante in the alleyway, the other two men picked up Susan and laid her over Dante. After securing her so she wouldn’t fall off, they led Dante out the back of the stable.

After walking a short distance down the trail, they came to their waiting horses. After mounting, they continued following the trail leading Dante. When the stable could no longer be seen, they picked up the pace. Even so, every once in a while one of them would stop and look back down the trail. On reaching their marker, they turned off the trail and began following the path through the grass that a herd had recently taken. It wasn’t long before they crossed the road where they had been dropped off earlier. Once across the road, they continued on toward a cave they’d used in the past. They paused frequently so the leader could verify their location with the path finder. They were limited to a fast walk as there wasn’t sufficient light to move faster and maintain their direction and avoid obstacles.

Shortly before the abductors reached the road, Jen said, “Susan didn’t give me the impression that she would be gone this long.”

Tracey responded, “Wow, she should have been back well before now. Let’s go see what she is up to. Besides I could use some exercise.”

When they reached Dante’s stall, they were surprised to see it was empty with the gate hanging open.

Steve frowned as he said, “The saddle is still here.” As he turned to look around, he noticed a light coloured object on the ground. When he went to pick it up, he noticed multiple boot prints. The object he picked up was a syringe.

Before he could comment Jen said, “Aren’t those Susan’s boots over there?”

“They are,” responded Tracey with a worried expression.

As Steve held up the syringe he said, “Tracey, go get the my tracker. Jen, let’s saddle the horses. I hope we are soon enough.” Leaving the obvious concern unstated.
