7th Tuesday – Kitty’s Bed & Breakfast – morning

As they were eating breakfast Lena said, “I spoke with Samuel Walter and they are expecting us between 9 and 10 this morning. Our visit to Murphy’s ranch is set to be around 2 this afternoon.”

“When were you planning taking the horses to the auction?” queried George.

“Early tomorrow morning.”

“Then I suggest you do it before breakfast.”

“Is there some place to eat around there?”

“Yes. There is a nice diner.”

“So we could drop the horses off get them settled then go to breakfast.”

“That would be the way I would do it,” responded George.

“Sounds like another adventure,” responded Susan with Steve and Tracey grinning and nodding. “We’re in if you would like company.”

“Certainly,” responded Lena.

At 8:30 the group going with Lena left Kitty’s Bed and Breakfast headed toward Walters ranch. On approaching the house and stable, Susan said, “This looks like quite a layout. The house is lovely as it fits in with the surroundings.”

Kathy stopped the truck in the parking area in front of the stables with the back of the trailer facing the stable. As they exited the truck an older gentlemen came toward them from the stable.

George softly said, “That is Samuel coming this way.”

When the man reached them he blinked on recognizing George, then said, “Good morning everyone. George, it is good to see you again. I presume one of you is Lena.”

“That would be me,” Lena responded with a smile as she reached out to shake hands. “With me besides George are Kathy, Tracey, Susan, and Steve.” Each shook hands with Samuel as they were introduced.

“Glad to have you all visiting us. The two horses Lena expressed an interest in buying are waiting in the stable ring, which is this way.”

As they walked toward the stable with Samuel, he said, “I understand that you are staying at Kitty’s Bed and Breakfast.”

“Yes,” replied Lena. “Some of us have stayed there several times. We’ve really enjoyed the atmosphere. Since our last visit, they’ve refurbished it, so it is even nicer. Do you focus on raising horses?”

“Not really. Our focus is cattle. However, we’ve chosen to raise enough horses to meet our needs to handle the cattle. In doing that, we often have a few extra to sell in the spring and sometimes in the fall. In nearly all cases they are trained for handling livestock.”

Entering the stable, they walked down a wide aisle. At a few of the stalls, a horse stood at the gate watching them pass. Susan and Tracey paused several times to give a horse a quick pat before continuing. Neither noticed that their actions caused a couple of the staff to frown.

On reaching the arena, Samuel said, “These are the two horses you inquired about. Dot is on the left and the other is Red. We consider them fully trained for handling cattle. Once you’ve looked them over, you are welcome to ride them either in here or out in the paddock. If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask.”

After Lena, Susan, and Kathy had examined both horses Lena said, “Dot’s right shoulder appears to be tender. Is there a reason?”

“Not that I am aware of, but let me check with the staff.” A few minutes later he returned a bit flushed, “It seems a couple of the staff were riding her when practicing for rodeo events. During this she ran into a post toward the end of their activity, so they think that might be the cause. If you would prefer, I have a similar horse I can offer as an alternative.”

“If you are comfortable with their explanation then Dot is fine or you can show us the other horse. I am fine either way.”

“I’ll have the other one brought in.”

“Rather than doing that, why don’t I ride her for a bit?” queried Susan. “Doing that should indicate how serious the injury is.”

Lena shrugged as did Samuel.

Susan smiled as she took the lead in her hand then quickly mounted Dot bareback. Her actions shocked those watching, resulting in a few gasps. She then had Dot trot around the arena then did some sharp turns before returning to the starting spot. After sliding off the horse and securing its lead to the rail she said, “While it may be tender, it doesn’t seem to be affecting her movements.” Looking at Lena, she added, “Why don’t I ride Red around the ring?”

With a nod from Lena, Susan mounted Red. She repeated the same series of moves that she had done with Dot. After returning to the group she dismounted then said, “She responds as well a Dot did.”

Smiling Lean said, “In that case, I am ready to finalize the purchase of Red and Dot.”

“Great,” responded Samuel. “We can do that in my office which is back this way.”

Susan enquired, “Would it be okay for us to wait here?”

“Sure,” responded Samuel.

After Samuel, Lena, and Kathy left for the office, Susan, Tracey, Steve, and George sat down near Dot and Red.

They had only been sitting there a few moments, when they saw two men enter the other end of the arena. One was leading a horse and the other was carrying a saddle and saddle blanket. Although they glanced at the two horses across the arena, neither apparently noticed them sitting near the horses. This was likely due to Dot and Red blocking their view and the lights above them not being on.

One man held the reins while the other placed the blanket on the horse then the saddle. When the straps for the saddle were tightened, the horse stomped and shook its head. Its actions almost resulted in it breaking fee from the man holding the reins.

The man saddling the horse snarled, “Dam horse.” He then cinched the saddle a bit tighter.

The man holding the reins asked, “Luke, are you sure this is a good idea?”

“Yea. If he gives me any trouble, then I’ll give him a good beating. It may take a couple of thrashings but it always brings them around to who is the boss.”

“You’re the boss,” replied the man cautiously.

Those sitting with Susan frowned on hearing their comments.

Gripping the halter, the man placed the reins over the horses neck.

When Luke stepped in to the stirrup to mount the stallion, the stallion pulled its head up almost pulling free from the man holding his halter. Its hooves stamped on the ground.

Luke hollered, “Hold him, dammit.”

Susan softly said, “Oh, oh.”

Luke swung up then dropped on to the saddle. The horse jerked its head up again pulling free of the man holding its halter. The man promptly dashed to safety behind the railing. Only then did he notice the others sitting on the far side of the arena near two tethered horses. The sound of the stallion’s response to having rider quickly drew his attention.

It only took several leaps by the stallion before Luke went flying off the horse and into the railing along the edge of the arena. After several moments Luke got to his feet, swearing and cursing the horse. Meanwhile the stallion shook and bucked several times as if trying to remove the saddle. When he could Luke grabbed the reins, pulled stallion’s head down near the rail and quickly tied them to a rail. Once he was sure the stallion was secure, he stomped out of the arena swearing. Meanwhile the stallion stomped and shook trying to break free. The fence around the ring groaned and sagged a bit when the stallion tried to pull free.

A few minutes later Luke, returned carrying an iron bar.

The man with him inquired, “What are you going to do with that?”

“Beat some sense into this dumb animal until it knows its place.”

“You’re crazy!” shouted the man.

“Shut the fuck up or you won’t be working here.”

In the quiet that followed, everyone heard the sound of a pistol being cocked. The sound drew everyones attention, even the horses.

As Susan cocked the pistol, she stood, then stepped into the arena holding the pistol near her leg. In doing so she drew everyones attention. She said firmly, “You are obviously out of your depth. Now, you need to drop that bar and unsaddle the stallion.”

“Who the fuck do you think you are, telling me what to do?” demanded a red faced Luke.

“Someone who will keep one dum animal from abusing the more intelligent and better looking one.”

“Well bitch just because you have a gun, doesn’t scare me a damn bit,” snarled Luke as, he took a step toward her. “I think I’ll start by teaching you how to obey your superiors.”

Tracey softly said, “Oh, oh, not a good move.”

Susan firmly said, “Do as I told you to and drop the bar.”

Unknown to Susan, both Steve and Tracey were now gripping their weapons. They had done this when she began speaking but kept them concealed.

When Luke lifted his foot to take another step toward her, she fired the pistol. In the enclosed area it sounded like a cannon. The Dot and Red, the two nearby horses, danced around but didn’t try to pull free. The stallion paused in trying to break free. The bullet struck the ground right in front of Luke’s foot, kicking up a cloud of dust. Even so, it caused him to jump back.

The sound of the pistol’s discharge brought Samuel, Lena, and Kathy running into the arena.

Samuel loudly demanded, “What’s going on?”

Luke shouted, “That crazy woman shot at me.”

“Yep. Now, tell him why!” demanded Susan with the pistol still pointed toward him. When he didn’t respond, she said, “Are you deaf, tell him why you have the iron bar! Or...”

As Susan was speaking, Samuel quickly looked around the arena. He now noticed those with Susan, were quietly watching the activity in the arena. He could see several staff observing from the edge of the arena, obviously not wanting to be involved. Then he noticed Nick sitting on the other side of the arena almost out of sight behind the horse. Turning his attention back to Luke he said, “So Luke, what is the iron bar for?”

Luke continued to stare at Susan and didn’t respond.

“Well Susan, apparently Luke is offering you the chance to explain this situation. Please enlighten us.”

Then Susan with firm voice loud enough for everyone to here, described the events leading up to her firing her weapon.

“Well that explains the iron bar in Luke’s hand. As to his intent to harm the stallion, he knows that is not how we treat our animals.”

“I’ll bet he does it when no one is looking,” firmly noted Susan.

Hearing her accusation, Luke’s anger grew. He wondered how she knew. Noticing Susan’s attention was elsewhere, he took the opportunity and quickly hurled the bar at her. His sudden movement caught Susan’s attention. She quickly stepped to the side then managed to catch the bar.

Smiling she said, “So you want to play catch.” Gripping bar like a spear, she whirled around and released it. Her response shocked Luke, such that he hardly moved before the bar reached him. He screamed when it hit his knee, causing him to stumble backward toward the still agitated stallion. When he landed, he was very near the agitated stallion’s rear hooves.

Except for the stallion stamping hooves and pulling on the rail, it was quiet.

The Nick quickly eased into the ring and pulled Luke away from the stallion’s hooves. The movement caused Luke to scream.

Due to his scream and everyone’s attention on Luke, no one noticed Susan return her pistol to its holder. Then ignoring everyone, she walked along the edge of the arena, slowly approaching the stallion. After letting him smell her hand, she patted him as she spoke softly to him. After a few moments, she released the reins from the arena rail. The stallion jerked his head up and stamped the ground a couple of time. She then looped the end of the reins loosely around the rail thus giving the stallion some freedom of movement. Next she loosened the strap holding the saddle in place. After pulling the saddle off, she removed the horse blanket. On seeing blood, she calmly and softly said, “Lena, do you have some antiseptic wipes with you?”

“Yes. In the trailer. Why?”

“There is blood under the blanket.”

Hearing Lena leave, Susan turned the horse blanket over and examined the red spots. “Samuel, these spots on the blanket don’t look normal. They might be the reason the stallion started bucking as soon as Luke put his weight on the saddle.”

Once Nick saw the blanket he said, “Damn. Looks like someone Luke has been bullying, set him up as that is the blanket he always uses.”

A few moments later Lena handed Susan some wipes then joined Samuel in examining the blanket.

After wiping the stallions back, Susan inquired, “Kathy, is there a saddle and blanket in the trailer I could use?”

“I think so.”

“One suitable for this stallion.”

“Possibly, I’ll take a look. I suspect you intend to ride him.”

“Potentially. I have a good feeling about taking that path.”

Susan didn’t notice Tracey look at Steve and smile. Steve winked in response. Only George noticed the side play.

Seeing the stallion had calmed down, several staff members had entered and immobilized Luke’s leg. He was then placed on a stretcher. At that point the foreman looked over at Samuel who nodded. Luke was then placed in the back of an SUV so a staff member could take him to the hospital.

Meanwhile Lena assisted Susan in wiping down the horses back. Their gentle attention to him had a calming effect. He did frequently look over his shoulder to watch them. When Kathy returned, she was carrying a saddle and saddle blanket. On reaching Susan, she said, “I think this one will work for a short time.”

On hearing that Susan laid a small towel over the wounds then placed the saddle blanket Kathy brought on the stallion’s back. After gently laying the saddle on his back, she felt around it to see how well it fit. After a few moments, she decided it would do for a short time. Moving slowly, she then tightened the cinch straps sufficiently to hold the saddle in place. The stallion watched Susan but didn’t object to her efforts. Lena placed the reins over the horses neck, then patted him as she continued to hold his halter.

When Samuel realized Susan’s intent, he was about to object, but George nudged him and shook his head. Samuel stared at George for a moment then glanced over toward the staff watching the activity before looking back toward the stallion.

He gasped in surprise as Susan was now sitting in the saddle patting the stallion and apparently softly speaking to him. After a few moments, at Susan’s urging the stallion shifted his position. As he did, everyone moved behind the railing. It was very quiet as they watched Susan sitting in the saddle and the stallion standing quietly. After a moment or two, the horse looked back at her and she nodded. He then began walking. They circled the arena several times, going a bit faster each time. After several circuits of the ring, they begin some more complicated movements as Susan used her legs and hands to communicate with the stallion. When they finished Susan rode over near Samuel, then inquired, “Samuel, could someone open the gate to the paddock? I would like to take a short tour then return.”

Hesitantly he responded, “If you are sure?”

“Oh. Definitely.”

Hearing the exchange, a nearby staff member quickly opened the gate. Seeing the open gate the stallion quickly headed toward it. Those who had been in the arena along with ranch hands followed Susan and the stallion out to the paddock. By the time they reached the paddock the horse was rapidly trotting away from them. Once away from the stable, the horse began moving as if working a herd. It wasn’t long before a ranch hand noticed noticed that Susan wasn’t using the reins. He quickly pointed out to those near him. They didn’t believe him at first, but it was soon obvious that she was guiding him. After several minutes, they turned and trotted back toward the stable’s arena entrance. Seeing her intent most of the observers moved back inside the arena.

On dismounting she said to Samuel, “This is a very nice horse and responds to direction very well.”

Samuel nodded, “You two were very impressive.”

“I don’t understand why others couldn’t ride him. Who trained him?”

“I am not sure. After seeing your demonstration, I suspect the difficulty others had in riding him was due to them treating him like a tool rather than a partner.”

Responding a bit loudly she said, “Good craftsmen know to treat tools with respect.”

“Yes, good craftsmen do. As to training him, I would need to look at the records. He was part of a group, we purchased several months ago.”

As she began removing the saddle she responded, “Well either he had a good trainer, or he is a natural, so you got a bargin.”

“Well I am not so sure about that.” After a pause he asked, “Would you like to buy him?”

After she finished unsaddling the stallion, she replied, “That is something I haven’t considered in a long time. I am not sure my current circumstances would make that possible.”

Kathy picked up the saddle and blanket, and smiled on hearing their exchange.

Sensing his puzzlement Susan turned to Samuel, “I am not putting you on. Until very recently I lived in a high rise condo that was located in a moderate sized community. I’ve only been at Lone Pine a few weeks and began riding again. Prior to that, I haven’t been on a horse in more that a decade. Now, I have to admit that I feel very comfortable with and on him.”

“Well you’ve demonstrated that this horse can be ridden and he is quite capable. My problem is that he has a bad reputation among the staff. That will cause some to avoid riding him. Some will work well with him but they will never be comfortable doing so. A few will be like Luke but hopefully not to that extreme or seek to do it. So ... I’d like you to consider it.”

Susan saw Lena nod with a smile. Tracey was smiling.

Seeing how her friends reacted she responded, “Well what would you want for him?”

After a moment he inquired, “Could you handle $3,000?”

Susan was surprised by such a low offer but kept her expression neutral as she replied, “Well..., if I can give you a check.”

“Great you’ve just bought a great horse and resolved a significant problem for me. Now, let’s go take care of the paper work. Lena and I still have to complete the paper work for Red and Dot.” Looking over at Lena, he added, “Lena let’s go finish the paper work while your group loads your horses.”

Susan said, “Kathy, can you load the stallion?”

“I think so,” replied Kathy with a concerned expression. “What’s his name?”

“Now that is a good question, cause I don’t know.”

Laughing Samuel said, “All I’ve heard is PITA (pain in the ass), but I am sure that isn’t his name.” Samuel’s comment prompted everyone to laugh.

Susan said to Kathy, “From the way, I’ve seen you treat horses, I think the two of you will be fine. However, if you are not, then I can take care of it after we finish up in the office.”

Later after they were all loaded up and on their way back to Kitty’s, George inquired, “So did you learn what his name was?”

“The only thing in the records is his formal registry name, which is a mouthful,” responded Susan. “So we need to come up with a casual name that is not PITA.”

After the laughter subsided George said, “That should be easy to sort out. You do seem to have a natural way with horses.”

Both Steve and Tracey gave a thumbs up that only Susan saw.

Kathy said, “So our next task is to unload the horses at Kitty’s. By then, it will be lunch time. After which we are off to Murphy’s. Correct?”

Lena said, “Yes. George, we can assist with your chores, if you want to go with us to Murphy’s. We think having you along was very beneficial.”

“Well, I am glad that I went. I think in doing so, it did settle an irritation. Besides I found hanging out with you all to be interesting and quite exciting at times.”

Steve added, “You mean when someone starts shooting up the place.” The words were barely out of his mouth, he went oof due being elbowed by Tracey. “If it had been me, I think I would have aimed higher.”

Susan responded, “That would have been the next shot. Now I need to remember to clean the pistol this evening.”

“Well I am glad you didn’t need to, cause if you had we would still be dealing with paper work.”

“Too true.”

It wasn’t long before Kathy was backing the trailer up to Kitty’s stable. By the time, she had parked, they were joined by Joan, Lauren, along with their guests.

As the group exited the truck, Lauren said, “We thought you would be back before now.”

“Anxious?” inquired Kathy.

After the trailer gate was lowered, Susan entered. A few moments later, she had the stallion backing out of the trailer. Lena and Kathy then brought out Red and Dot.

Joan said, “I thought you were only buying two horses this morning.”

Smiling Lena replied, “I did. This is Red. Kathy has Dot. Susan bought the stallion. Now we need to get them situated in the stable.”

As they were eating lunch, Tracey said, “I find it amazing that those two came into the arena with us being there.”

Steve responded, “Well due to Red and Dot position, I don’t think we were visible when they entered and we were quiet. Also that side of arena was relatively dark compared to the other. Besides, they were focused on what they were doing. I think that is why they didn’t notice Susan until she cocked the pistol. I think that got everyones attention.”
