7th Monday – Lone Pine -
Susan looked at the clock and saw that it was nearly time for the alarm to sound. By the time, she stretched and reached for it the tones had begun. A glance out the window, told her that it was raining. After dressing, she left for Tai Chi class.
Entering the gym, it seemed to her that the group for Tai Chi class was larger. After greeting several, she saw Janet nod to her. Taking the cue, she excused herself and went to the front of the room. On reaching the spot to lead the group a chime sounded, and she took the starting position. She watched as everyone moved into position. When Janet saw that everyone was in position, she started the music. The music prompted Susan to began leading the class through the forms. She moved into the last form just as the music ended.
“Very good,” said Janet to Susan.
“Thank you. Doing this is a nice way to start the day. However, I suspect it is still too early for many residents and staff. The size of the group has seems to have grown.”
“Well I think attendance was a little more today,” responded Janet. “There are some who come everyday and a growing number who attend frequently but not everyday. I think the increased participation is due to Lena and I being able to assist participants as you lead.
“I understand you won’t be here for a few days.”
“Yes. Most of this week. Oh, will that be a problem?”
“No. There are several that I think would be good leaders, so now is my chance to find out.”
“Ah ... stepping out of the crowd is difficult for some. To be a class leader, you just need to know the forms, then go through them as you listen to the music. If you close your eyes during the routine, you are in your own world so whether you are in front of a group or not has no meaning.”
“Good point, when you are not concerned with coaching that works quite well. Thanks, I’ll point that out.”
When Susan returned to her suite after swimming and exercising, she took a shower. Next she gathered the clothes she had decided to take and laid each set out on the bed. The style of the clothes was quite different than what she had worn in the past. Because of this she was a bit concerned with the impression they would give. After contemplating her choices for a short while, she decided the selection was fine. The clothes were then carefully folded and packed for the trip. By the time she finished, it was time to go to breakfast.
Entering the dining room, she was greeted by several residents on her way to the serving line. After selecting her choices, she chose an empty table. Susan had hardly sat down, when three women approached the table. One said, “May we join you?”
“Certainly,” responded Susan with a smile. “My name is Susan. I don’t believe I’ve met you.”
“I’ve seen you around especially leading our Tai Chi classes. I’m Isabel.”
“I’m Elisa.”
“I’m Serafina.”
“So how do you like the sessions?”
“I think they are great,” responded Isabel. “I like them now because you get individual assistance without disrupting the sequence and the class.”
“I don’t believe you’ve been here very long,” inquired Elisa.
“Well this is my seventh week. And you?”
Elisa responded, “Serafina and I have been here for three years.”
“I’ve been here four years,” added Isabel.
“How do you like it?”
All three laughed, then Serafina said, “Well ... at first, I didn’t. It took me a while to figure out how to occupy my time. It also took me about the same amount of time to get over being mad at myself for putting myself in the position that resulted in me needing to come here. When you are angry at yourself, it is difficult to think clearly. Thanks to Nancy and some others, I think I have sorted out things.”
Elisa said, “I feel that I am fortunate to be here, rather than the place I’ve seen others end up when faced with an unexpected pregnancy.”
“Thankful to be here,” added Isabel.
“I agree with that,” responded Susan.
When they had finished eating, Susan said, “It has been great chatting with you, but I have some tasks that need my attention.”
“That is true for me as well,” responded Elisa with Isabel and Serafina nodding in agreement.
“Hope you all have a great day.”
“You as well,” responded Elisa, Isabel, and Serafina.
When Susan checked her email, she found a note from Jen telling her that departure would be from the stable area at 1 PM and that the trip would last at least 3 hours.
After setting the alarm to remind her when it was time to meet them. She started the project report. When the alarm sounded startling her, she was just finishing it. She smiled, “That worked out well. All I need to do now is to proof read it.”
With that she backed up her PC then placed her laptop and several items into her travel kit then went to lunch. Susan had just sat down to lunch when Lena and Jen joined her.
Jen said, “I presume you saw my note.”
“Yes. I’ll be ready as soon as I finish lunch and change into travel clothes.”
Lena responded, “Well as soon as everyone is at the stable we will depart.”
“Out of curiosity, why are we leaving from there?”
“Well I plan to do some horse trading while we in the Casper area. So, we are taking a pickup with a horse trailer as well as an SUV. On Tuesday, I am to visit two stables to look at horses they have for sale. Potentially, we will be purchasing four horses. On Wednesday, we’ll take the two horses we brought from here to a horse auction.”
“Oops, now I remember you mentioning that.”
Jen said, “Horse trading? Not something I expected.”
“Well that is sort of understandable,” responded Lena. “While the ranch owns four horses, the other four are mine. When I arrived, the horses were all fairly old and some not in good health. They were primarily used for casual riding but not often. Their care was sort of lackadaisical and done primarily by several residents. This was primarily due to the staff’s lack of knowledge and time. Seeing the need, I began taking care of that aspect of the operation. It sort of fit my skill set as I grew up on a ranch and had done competitive riding. Besides it gave me something productive to do while I sorted my future. Since then I’ve done some trading so we now have eight fairly young horses, to ride. In doing this, the quality of the tack has been improved. If our trip goes well, we will be coming back with four horses, and possibly some new tack.”
“So is being the Stable Mistress, your only role?”
“Well I have a website that focuses on care, and breeding of horses. The income from the advertisers makes it worthwhile and gives me some pocket money. The ranch also quietly supports the activity.”
“Well thanks to Lena’s efforts, I’ve rediscovered the joys of horseback riding,” noted Susan. “As you may have guessed, I have resumed doing that on a frequent basis. Dusty has an interesting personality.”
“That he does. From what I’ve seen, the two of you seem to interact quite smoothly. That has not been true for others who have ridden him.
“Just remember to go out with at least two other riders. Our only restriction is that you stay on this side of the ridge defining the canyon. This is primarily for safety reasons as communication beyond the canyon is at this time difficult. Special arrangements need to be made if you want to go beyond the canyon.”
Jen said, “The antennas that were installed to operate the drone could be used to resolve that issue. I think the needed changes would be minor. However knowing what was needed, would take a bit of research. Hopefully we can arrange for it to cover the whole ranch. Some of the newer radios also have a panic button and a tracking feature, which are nice safety features.”
“Can you check into it?” inquired an excited Lena with Susan nodding.
“So what has you excited?” asked Jen.
“Those two safety features. They would be a benefit even for our excursions around the canyon.”
“True. When we get back, I’ll look into it. You are welcome to remind me.”
“Oh, I will.”
Susan said, “I’ll see you all shortly.”
“Okay,” responded Jen as they prepared to leave the dining room.
Back in her suite, Susan put on a blouse that buttoned down the front, then a skirt with a hem that reached mid thigh. After putting on a pair of high heeled boots, she put on a blazer that overlapped in the front which also provided breast support. On looking at her image in the mirror she realized that this was the most clothes she had worn since coming to Lone Pine. She thought now all I need is a pair of leggings and I could go riding. However, she had to admit she liked her appearance, as it definitely had a western or outdoor flavor.
After a moment, she picked up her bags and went to meet, Lena, Jen, Joan, and Lauren. Lena introduced her to Kathy who would be driving the pickup pulling the trailer and Terri who would drive the SUV.
Lena said, “We are expecting the trip to take between three and four hours. I will ride with Kathy in the pickup. More can ride in the pickup, but I think you will find the SUV more comfortable. So let’s mount up and be on our way.
They had hardly gone a mile when a wrangler flagged them down. When they stopped, he rode up next to the pickup truck. Kathy rolled the window down then said, “Good afternoon. Do you need assistance?” Susan was surprised to hear Kathy’s voice. She looked at Terri with a raised eyebrow.
Terri said softly, “We have private open radio link with them.”
The wrangler said, “Good afternoon, Mam. No we are fine. However, we were wondering if any of your people had seen any large predators as some have been reported in the area.”
Kathy looked at Lena who then shook her head.
Kathy said, “None that we know of, however we seldom go beyond the tree line of the canyon.”
Lena added, “Although about a week ago, a group of us did ride over the ridge to the west of our home. From there we went north around the ridge before coming back over the ridge. On the other side of the ridge, we did see a couple of areas where the grass was matted down. However, the horses were calm the whole time we were out.”
“Okay. If you all see any please let us know.”
“You’re with the ranch that owns the herd here.”
“Yes, Mam. Have a great day.” With that he rode over to join two others. As he approached the other riders, Lena noticed that they had several dogs with them.
As they began moving down the lane, Jen said to those in both vehicles, “Does that happen very often?”
“Does what happen?” queried Kathy.
“Meeting a wrangler like that.”
Terri said, “As to engaging them in a conversation, I would say infrequently. More frequently they will use hand signs to indicate whether to move or wait. Each time that occurred, they were moving a herd. Other than that if I pass them we will wave to each other, which is quite common around here. I regard it as a long distance way of saying ‘hi’.”
Kathy added, “I’ve experienced that. Occasionally the scene you just saw was repeated, but the topic was different. As well as I remember, it was usually whether I had seen something. They’ve always been polite.”
“As to polite,” responded Terri, “a few were so polite that I though in bordered on being rude.”
When they turned north on the state road Susan said, “I thought Bar Nunn was south of us.”
“It is,” responded Terri. “We will go north for a bit then turn on to a road heading west. After a bit it shifts toward the southwest then after a short distance we will turn on to I-90 then I-25. We will arrive at Kitty’s Bed and Breakfast before we reach Casper.”
“I gather that this isn’t a typical outing.”
“Well, yes and no,” responded Lena. “As to Joan and Lauren who are meeting potential clients, it is typical. The horse trading aspect is not. I chose to do this now as my next pregnancy is scheduled to start sometime next month.”
Once they turned on to the interstate highway, Terri let the distance between them and the trailer grow until it was around a quarter mile or so. Terri noted, “By us staying this far behind the trailer, it is easier for others to pass. This spacing has other benefits as well. One of them is that this is more relaxing for me.”
It was a little over three hours later when they turned in to the entrance for Kitty’s Bed & Breakfast. A short distance down the lane, a stable came into view. As the pickup approached the stable, Terri paused to let Kathy park the trailer. Once Kathy had parked with the back of the trailer facing the stable, Terri parked alongside of her. As they were getting out of the vehicles, Susan saw an older couple coming from the house.
When Lena saw them, she said, “Good afternoon, Alison, George. It is good to see you all again.”
“Welcome to Kitty’s Bed and Breakfast,” responded Alison with George nodding. Alison added, “Lena, we are pleased that you all decided to stay with us again.”
“Well this is a great place to stay.”
Turning to her traveling companions, “Guys, as you’ve likely guessed these are our hosts, Alison and George. Alison, George, I think Kathy was with me the last time I was here.” She then introduced the others.
After introductions Lena said, “Before we go up to the house, we should unload the horses.”
George said, “Now the email, we received earlier from Lone Pine makes sense. It indicated who was coming and that you were bringing two horses. When the reservation was made, the option of bringing horses wasn’t noted. What were your plans regarding them?”
Lena paused before responding with, “My apologies if we have created a problem.”
Alison replied, “You haven’t. We were puzzled by the discrepancy. We do have the room to accommodate them.”
“We brought two horses and they are going to the auction in Casper on Wednesday. While here I am going to look at four horses and may buy all of them. That presumes the ads and messages I have exchanged with two nearby ranchers are accurate.”
“Well that likely explains the two messages we’ve received for you from local ranchers,” responded George as he assisted in lowering the trailer gate.
“Great. I suspect those are about the horses.”
“Yes.” Then he softly added, “Well be careful.”
Only Lena and Susan appeared to hear his response and saw his expression.
Lena suggested, “You are welcome to accompany us tomorrow when we go to look them over. Actually, by you joining us it would make finding our way around much easier.”
“Perhaps,” replied George uneasily.
After placing the horses in stalls and feeding them, Alison and George walked with them up to the house. When they were close to the house Lena said, “It looks like you’ve made some changes since the last time I was here.”
“Yes. Last fall, we spruced the place up a bit,” responded Alison. “Well perhaps more than that. We added a few more sleeping rooms and updated the existing ones. Now each room has a bathroom or shares one with the adjacent room. There is still the full bath accessible from the hall.”
“The windows look different as does the roof.”
“Sharp eyes and a good memory,” responded Alison as they entered the reception area. “Now I need each of you to sign the ledger. Lena, I understand there will be three couples arriving today.”
Lena looked at Terri who responded, “Yes. They are scheduled to arrive at the Casper airport about 5:30. Jen and I will be going to pick them up. If I remember correctly, it is a little less than an hour from here.”
George responded, “Usually about forty-five minutes.”
“In that case, I guess Jen and I should leave as soon as we place our bags in our room.”
Alison said, “In that case, why don’t I set out some snacks and we will plan on having dinner once everyone is here.”
“Thank you,” responded several.
“Are you all planning on having all your meals here?”
