6th Thursday – Lone Pine -
It was a little before 5 AM, when the camera alarm monitoring the approach to the cave drew Lana’s attention. After bringing the view up on the main screen, she noted four people in dark clothing coming down the trail apparently with large back packs. A short distance down the trail, they turned toward the cave and soon disappeared into it.
Lana thought, “It’s unfortunate that we removed the listening devices.”
After a few moments she resumed monitoring the other screens. A few cycles later when she looked at the trail by cave, two people came out of the cave. Both were wearing very full backpacks and carrying some items. She monitored their movements until they were out of camera range. Jo arrived, just as she was just noting the events in the log.
Jo said, “What is up?”
“Not sure. A little while ago, four people came down the path on the west side then entered the cave. All of them were wearing large backpacks. They were there for a short time then two left with what appeared to be full backpacks as well as carrying some items. I watched them follow the game path up the hill until they were out of camera range. That occurred just before you arrived. I was just noting the activity in the log.”
“Hmm, I wonder what that means? Let’s monitor the cave area closely, but we still need to watch the other areas. While what you saw indicates that they are leaving, another possibility is that they’ve decided to relocate so we need to be alert.”
An hour later Jo said, “Since it is light out now, let’s look at the images again.”
After examining the images Jo said, “Your assessment was very good. So now we need to wait and see what happens this evening when they depart.”
“So what do you think they are doing?” asked Lana.
“Well it definitely didn’t look like they brought in more than the usual stuff. When the two left, their backpacks were full and they were carrying some stuff. So based on what we’ve seen, we could presume that they are shutting down their effort. So, what does it mean? Another is why?”
“Sounds reasonable based on this morning’s visual clues. I may come back this evening to see what they do.”
“Well don’t slight your work because of this.”
“I won’t. Are we planning a get together to review the information we’ve collected?”
“Yes. We originally were considering tomorrow afternoon but it may be Saturday morning if everyone is agreeable.”
“I can’t see anyone objecting to Saturday as it will be something different to do. Actually, I think Saturday might be the best choice, as none of us would have conflicts.”
“Good point. That will give Jan and Jen time to go over what we’ve recorded and catch up on their rest.”
As Susan was leaving the dining room after breakfast, she saw several people wearing clothes enter the elevator. Two of the women were carrying baby carriers. The scene puzzled her a moment then realized that they were apparently leaving to deliver babies to their adoptive parents.”
Lori startled her when she said, “Seeing people wearing normal clothes does cause you to look twice, doesn’t it?”
“Good morning and yes it does. I presume they were off to deliver babies.”
“Yes, some of them. There were several staff with them who were going into town to get supplies. So by this evening we will possibly have some new stories about activities and rumors in town.”
“Really. I don’t think I’ve heard any.”
“Well now that you mention it, it has been a while since there has been any really good stories. You know the local paper has a web site.”
“Yea, I’ve found that and the local social media sites. In some respects, they are difficult to understand cause I don’t know the people or the area. However, some are...”
Laughing Lori said, “Exactly. Well off to work. Have a great day.”
“Thank you, and you as well.
When Susan entered the Security Center after dinner, she was surprised to see Marcy, Lana, Crystal and Jo. After exchanging greetings Susan said, “I’m surprised I didn’t see you all at dinner.”
“We went right when dinner began,” responded Marcy. “Alice was here and there wasn’t much activity.”
“How far along are Jan and Jen?”
“We are expecting them to arrive at the barn between 9 and 10,” responded Jo.
“Great. Did you hear the stories the staff brought back from town?”
“Nope.”
“Well the staff stopped at a diner for lunch. While there, they heard several people talking about wranglers seeing a pair of large cats in the area near us about dawn. Apparently this news prompted several ranches to initiate a check of the areas where their herds were located. At the time, no one had found any activity related to cats.
“The other funny story was about a couple of wranglers, however I doubt the wranglers think it was funny. Anyway they were checking on one of the shelters in a distant pasture. On entering it, they were surprised to find that a family of skunks had taken up residence. The new residents took exception to the wranglers arrival. The wranglers weren’t able to leave before being sprayed. From what the staff said, the telling of the recent run in with skunks, led to several people sharing their experiences on encountering skunks.”
“So since cats were seen in the area, it fits very well with what the observers found after we were there.”
“Did you observe any activity at the observation post?” inquired Susan.
“Not since this morning,” responded Lana. “I gather that you know about that.”
“I do.”
Jo said, “How is your write up describing the information you’ve found coming along?”
“Here is a very preliminary draft. As I worked through it, I found places where more details are needed. So I am not as far along as I thought I would be. Since we’ve determined that the observers are from the Circle-R ranch, today’s searches were to gain more information on who they interact with in this general area. I should be able to finish it tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. As to the draft, let me know if you see gaps that need more detail.”
Jo said, “We’ll look it over, but I think for the time being, we should hold this report close to us.”
“So you are saying, don’t leave it laying around?” responded Marcy with a smile.
“I knew you were sharp enough to catch on right away.”
It was shortly after dusk when their review of the write up was interrupted by a trail camera reporting movement. The detected movement was on the trail the intruders used. Two men could be seen and were apparently wearing backpacks similar to those they saw this morning. They watched the two men until they disappeared from view.
Nearly an hour passed before the camera monitoring the cave opening noted movement. On checking the view, they saw three men exit the cave with full backpacks and carrying several items. The three stopped on the trail. After a few moments the covering over the front of the cave came down, exposing the fourth man. He quickly folded the cover up and stuffed it into another backpack. One of the men walked back into the cave. After a few moments both men joined those waiting on the trail then the group headed up the trail toward the ridge.
Marcy said, “I wonder what they will do about the solar panel.”
“Don’t have a camera that covers that area,” responded Jo. “Some of us could take a horseback ride up that way tomorrow.”
“Now that is a grand idea,” exclaimed Susan. “I’ve been wanting a good reason to go for an extended ride. So after lunch tomorrow, why don’t several of us ride up that path and over the ridge then around and come back on a different trail.”
“An excellent idea,” agreed Jo. “So let’s plan on it.”
It was several hours later when Jo said, “Jan and Jen should be approaching the barn by the time we can get over there.”
Lana said, “I’ll wait here.”
“With Jan and Jen back, I am not sure we need more than the usual staffing of the center,” noted Jo. “We aren’t detecting any unusual activity.”
Crystal replied, “Well watching the monitors is boring which is good in one aspect but bad as something significant could be missed due to inattention. So would it be better to have two people here or to have shorter shifts?”
“If we have enough volunteers, having two people would be my choice,” responded Jo. “Now that the software is fully configured, the senors will alert you of any detected movement and indicate a level of significance. However setting the sensitivity so it doesn’t respond to insignificant movement will take some time to sort out. Never forget that the sensors aren’t perfect, and they may not detect an intrusion.”
“I think you will have sufficient group of volunteers,” responded Lana.
“Okay, that is a topic for tomorrow. Now let’s go meet our hikers. Lana, let us know if there is an alarm on the sensors.”
“Okay.”
Jo, Susan, and Marcy arrived in the barn just before Jan and Jen entered.
On seeing their greeters they smiled, then Jen said, “I am glad you all came to greet us.”
Susan said, “Well we are glad you are back. How was your outing?”
Jan replied, “More tiring than we anticipated, and I am not sure why. However, it has been quite a few years since we’ve done anything like this, so that was likely the reason.”
“So how can we help?” asked Marcy.
“Warm up the shower. I hope you brought the soap.”
“I did,” replied Jo.
With assistance, Jan and Jen were soon in the shower.
As they were drying off, Jen said, “I feel much better now. We were only out for a few days, and I can remember being dressed like that for a week at a time. I guess I am getting soft.”
“Well you are a bit older now,” noted Jo. “Back then it wasn’t very often when only two people went out.”
“Good point. And we really are out of practice, so we had to put more effort into our activity. Well it’s done, and we shouldn’t need to do that again.”
“So what is the status of the observers?” inquired Jan.
Smiling Jo responded, “They’ve packed up and left.”
“Really?”
“Yes it appears that they took everything with them.”
“Cause we were there?”
“That doesn’t appear to be the case. However, unless Susan discovers something, we may never know why.”
“Susan?”
“Using the information you obtained from the 4-wheeler, Susan has been using the web to find information on the owner and related items. Due to the mics you put in the cave, we know a lot more about the history of the area from an older wrangler’s point of few, as well as the rumors he has heard.”
“So our effort was worthwhile.”
“Definitely. Based on what occurred today, it is a good thing we didn’t wait. Also we should have high definition maps of the area tomorrow. Then in a few days a map showing current property boundaries, thanks to our data analyst.”
Seeing Jan and Jen’s puzzled expressions, Jo said, “First you need to rest, then tomorrow you can read through the logs, to which you may want to add comments. Tomorrow afternoon, Crystal, Marcy, Susan, and I are going on a horseback ride. Our plan is to take the game trail the intruders have been using over the ridge, then go around to the north and come back over on another game trail. This will give us a convenient reason to look at the caves as well as increase our familiarity with the area. We will also be able to check whether the solar panel is still there.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“Jo, we may want to ask Lena to join us,” noted Susan. Seeing Jo’s expression, she added, “When Marcy was showing me the barn, she offered to assist us when we went riding. I don’t know about you all, but she is a bit more experienced than us.”
“Good point. It has been a long time for me. So long ago, I don’t remember when it was. I’ll check with her in the morning.”
Marcy said, “What’s next?”
“Let’s finish putting this stuff away, then call it a day.”
Jan said, “For tonight, let’s take our recordings and notes back to our suite.”
Seventh week
7th Friday – Lone Pine
Just as Susan started leading the Tai Chi session, she saw Jan, Jen and Jo enter the gym and head towards the group. She smiled noting that Jan and Jen looked better this morning, as she continued through the forms. When the session ended, several participants approached Janet and her with questions about the forms. By the time they had answered all the questions, she didn’t see Jan, Jen, or Jo, so she headed for the swimming pool.
After swimming 20 laps and completing her strengthening exercises, she went back to her suite to shower and dress for the day. Before leaving for breakfast she checked her email, then took a brief look at the news.
In the dining room after selecting her food, she opted to sit at an empty table. As she ate, she thought about the information she had gathered about the area, and what needed a closer look.
Susan jumped when Crystal said, “Good morning. Oops sorry didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Good morning. Not a problem. I often loose track of my surroundings when I am deep into evaluating a situation. So how are you this morning?”
“Great. I’m really looking forward to the horseback ride. Even though it is chilly, it will be good to get out and about.”
Jo said as she sat down, “Well dress warmly, as there is suppose to be a cold front come through today and precipitation tomorrow.”
“Good morning,” said Jan and Jen. Jan added, “May we join you all.”
Susan glanced at Crystal then said, “Good morning. As to joining us, certainly.”
“Jo, what do you suggest we wear?” inquired Crystal.
“Well western boots, a long skirt, leggings, a drovers coat and a wide brim hat that has a good chin strap. There are community items in the tack room. They probably won’t be the best fit but you will be warm.”
Susan added, “Actually I thought the selection was pretty good. I easily found suitable gear when Lena and I went riding.”
“So I guess we need gloves as well,” enquired Crystal.
“That would be a good idea.”
“So what is up with the survey this morning?” asked Susan.
“While we are on our ride, Jan and Jen will continue reviewing the activity log we created and add in their notes. Then if there is time we will read through your draft. Did the map image arrive?”
“Sort of, I still need to download it. Where do you want me to put it?”
“I’ll send you an address. It will be in the space the Security Center uses.”
“Fine.”
Crystal said, “When were you going to optimize the movement sensors?”
“Before we decided to take a ride, I had planned on continuing that this morning, but now it will be after our ride. As to monitoring the area, until that is completed, there will be quite a few warnings which all need to be logged. In the learning stage, we will have some sensors that are too sensitive and some not sensitive enough. This why we want to log all of them with indications of what was detected if anything. Initially it can be a pain, but long term it really increases our ability to spot an actual incursion. Supposedly the sensors we are using are ideal for our circumstances, but we will see.”
It was after lunch when Jo, Marcy, Susan, Lena, Crystal met in the barn. Lena asked, “Jo, have you ridden before?”
“Yes, but not very often.”
“So you would prefer to not have a spirited mount?”
Smiling she responded, “Definitely.”
“Susan?” inquired Lena.
“If no one else is riding Lark, then I would like to ride her. Although a more spirited one would be fine.”
With a smile she responded, “In that case, check out stall 5.”
After getting the saddle, blanket and bridle for the horse, she went to the stall. As she walked down the aisle, she saw the horses watching the activity. When she bent over to lay the gear on the bench next to the gate the horse nudged her with his head. This caused her to set the gear down heavily as she regained her balance. When she did, she turned and glared at the horse. The horse nickered and bobbed its head. When it did, she heard several chuckling.
Turning to Lena, she said, “What is his name? Joker?”
Laughing Lena responded, “Now that is an interesting suggestion, but it is Dusty.”
Susan held her hand out to the horse who then rubbed his head against it. After scratching his head, she put the bridle on him. When she went to pick up the blanket, he gave her a slight nudge with his head. Laughing she picked up the blanket and placed it on his back. Patting the horse she said, “Are you trying to hurry me up?”
Dusty responded by shaking his head up and down. Susan laughed at his apparent response as did several others. Next she placed the saddle on his back and tightened the cinch. She then led Dusty out into the aisle where they waited for the others to finish. Lena was the last as she had assisted Jo with saddling her mount.
On exiting the barn they mounted their horses, then headed west across the field. This was toward the area where the cave was located that the intruders had used. On reaching the tree line, they zig zagged up the steep hill side generally following a game trail up to the cave. As they approached the cave, it was obvious that all the gear had been removed. It was also obvious that there had been significant activity in the cave. They dismounted then spent some time exploring the cave. Crystal took photos of the cave interior and exterior. Jo noted that the cave appeared to go further into the hillside than Jan and Jen had indicated. This was noted as something to investigate in the future as they didn’t have the appropriate gear with them.
From the cave, they continued their ride over the ridge. Once they started down the gentle slope, it was obvious where the solar panels had been located. As there were numerous 4-wheeler tracks from where the panels had been located and down the hillside.
As they sat on their horses looking over the area Jo said, “Well now we know that the panels are gone, but they sure made it obvious that something was here.”
Lena responded, “Today, but little rain and in a couple of weeks, even knowing what was here, it will be hard to spot.”
“Good point.”
They followed the game trail on down the hill, then turned in a northerly direction and followed the tree line. As they rode along they surveyed their surroundings, and took several photos. Off in the distance, they could see several groups of cattle. When they reached the point where they thought there was a game trail, they entered the tree line. It took them several attempts before they located one they could follow. Then following the trail, they rode up the hill, often pausing to look around before continuing on. Once over the crest they slowly rode down the steep hillside toward the canyon floor. As in the climb up they zig zagged their path down making it easier for the horses. Several times they detoured to check out a location that drew their attention. On reaching the tree line, they turned toward the barn.
On reaching the barn Lena said, “It looks like we have plenty of time to take care of the horses, then clean up before dinner.”
After dismounting Susan led Dusty over to his stall then began preparing to remove his saddle. She didn’t notice the others watching her but Lena did.
As Susan finished Lena said, “Well taking care of the horses is really pretty simple. First step is to remove the saddle, blanket, and halter then return them to the tack room. Next they need to be brushed, watered and fed. Be sure to hang the blanket up so it can dry out.”
Crystal responded, “It sounds simple, but I’m sure you can show us the correct way to accomplish all of that.”
“I’ll be happy to do that.”
Susan smiled as she watched Lena coach the others. After a moment, she resumed taking care of Dusty. When they were finished caring for the horses, she walked back to the building with Lena. She said to Lena, “Thanks for suggesting Dusty. I think many of this group will be out riding after todays experience. I liked how you guided them.”
“You noticed,” responded Lena with a smile and gave her a hug.
“Well since our ride the other day, I’ve noticed that you seem to spend a lot of time over here. You are also the person the residents go to if they have questions.”
“As I indicated the other day, I sort of walked into that role. When I arrived here, care of the horses was kind of lackadaisical but sufficient. Since I grew up on a farm and we had horses, I gravitated toward looking after them. When the staff here noticed my interest, they let me assume the role of managing this area. Doing so fits well with my background and university work. You seem to be more knowledgeable than you’ve let on. Perhaps the word I am looking for is confident.”
“Well as noted before, I rode a lot when I was younger, in fact all the way through high school. I was fortunate in that we had a neighbor who had several horses which was the stable I referred to. For helping take care of the horses, I could ride them as much as I wanted to. Well provided, I kept up my grades. So I spent most of my free time at the stables, so I saw a lot and assisted at times with their training and other aspects.”
