1st Sunday early
When Four exited the cockpit, Jen said, “It looks like there is snow on the ground. Where are we?”
“It is snow, as we are in Wyoming. Sheridan, Wyoming to be more specific and it is close to midnight here.”
“I don’t think we are dressed for this.”
“Well it won’t take us long to unload and it is not real cold at the moment. We will access the cargo area from the cabin, so follow me.”
The Jan, Jen, and Jo followed Four to the back of the passenger area then entered the cargo area. After opening the cargo door, Four disconnected the power to the large crate. With the Jan, Jen, and Jo’s assistance, the crates were quickly placed on the loading platform. They then stepped onto the platform and rode it down until it stopped about a foot off ground.
While they had been putting the crates on the platform, Jo noticed a couple exit an SUV at the front of the plane. To her it looked like they were carrying four containers up the stairway into the plane. The SUV then pulled around the wing. It backed up to the cargo platform then stopped close to the platform supporting the crates.
A woman stepped out of the SUV with several coats on her arm and said, “Good evening. Perhaps good morning would be a better choice.”
“Yes it is, but barely” responded Four with a smile.
“Picky,” she responded as she handed the coats to Jan, Jen, and Jo, “These should ward off the cold until we are in the car.”
Four said, “It is good to see you again. Let’s get crates transferred, so we can be on our way.”
“Excellent.” Turning to Jan, Jen and Jo, their greeter said, “Lets save introductions for a bit. As soon as we have the crates in the SUV, we will head out as I think your pilots are anxious to depart.”
They quickly loaded the crates into the SUV. As Jan approached the front of the SUV, she noticed a woman in the drivers seat. She opened the passenger door for them. As they entered their greeter entered the front. They were hardly in their seats when the SUV began moving.
“Buckle up,” said the woman in the front seat.
As the SUV moved toward a hangar, they could hear the jet engine noise increase. Looking back Jo saw the plane taxing toward the runway. As she turned around, the SUV turned to go between two hangars and were soon approaching a gate. When they were near it, it slid out of the way to let them pass. They passed through an industrial area and were soon on a highway. A short distance out of town they turned on to a county road, then about an hour later they turned on to a gravel road. They crossed a couple of cattle guards before a building appeared in front of them.
Approaching the building, the garage door began to rise and they entered the dark garage. Once inside the door began closing. After the door was closed, the lights came on nearly blinding those who hadn’t closed their eyes. Once their vision adjusted, they could see several other vehicles.
“We are here,” said their greeter cheerfully as she stepped out and opened the back door.
Jan, Jen, and Jo sort of stumbled out of the vehicle as their vision was still adjusting to the bright interior.
Jen said, “We need to get the woman out of the crate as soon as possible.”
“We know. Help me set the crates on the trolley so we can move them to the clinic.”
Together they placed the two crates on the trolley, then pushed it a short distance to an open elevator. Once in the elevator, their greeter pressed the down arrow. When it stopped, the door opened to a hall with bare concrete walls. They pushed the trolley down the hall to another elevator and entered. Their escort pushed the G button and the elevator ascended. The door opened to what appeared to be a dimly lit lobby. On pushing the trolley out of the elevator, they were met by a woman wearing scrubs.
The woman said, “Good morning. When did she enter the crate?”
“About 3 AM Saturday morning.”
“Thanks. We will take it from here.”
When the woman began pushing the trolley down the hall, Jen started to follow but a hand on her shoulder stopped her. Their greeter said, “She is taking the crate to our clinic where a doctor and a nurse are waiting. The woman in the crate will be fine. Now, please come with me. We have a snack waiting for you in the dining room, which is likely more filling than what was available on the plane.
“While you are eating, we will take care of introductions. After you finish, we will show you to your accommodations. Is that acceptable?”
“Food sounds great,” quickly responded Jo with the others nodding.
Jo inquired, “What should we do with the coats?”
“You probably should hang on to them until you leave as it is supposed to be fairly cold the next few days.”
“Okay. Thanks.”
Rose, the woman in scrubs, pushed the trolley carrying the crates down the hall and into the clinic. She and Marie then carefully examined the seals on the crate containing Susan. After confirming they were okay, they began releasing fasteners. They then lifted the top off and released the exterior sides exposing the cushioned inner walls. Lifting off the top cushion panel, Rose was surprised that she didn’t hear any noise.
Nancy carefully placed a warm stethoscope on Susan’s back. After listening for a few moments a smiling Nancy softly said, “She appears to be sleeping. Heart sounds fine as does respiration.”
Rose added, “Blood pressure and temperature are normal.”
As they removed the cushioned sides, Nancy monitored Susan for any activity. Once all the cushioning was removed, Rose and Marie carefully released the restraints that limited Susan’s movements. With Nancy’s assistance, they lifted Susan off the bottom panel, then laid her on a hospital bed so she was laying on her side. Nancy and Rose then slowly extended Susan’s legs to a more natural position while monitoring them for cramping. Rose disconnected the restraints while Nancy carefully removed the gag. Nancy then again checked Susan’s blood pressure and respiration. After turning Susan so she was laying on her back, Rose set up an IV to feed her. She raised the rail then loosely secured Susan’s arm with the IV to it. This was to reduce the possibility of her inadvertently pulling out the IV.
“Her blood pressure and respiration are normal,” said Nancy. “I am little concerned that she hasn’t shown any sign of waking up.”
“Well according to the crate’s tag, she was in there for nearly 24 hours.”
“Note that in her chart. Set her up like we normally do new arrivals. Replace the catheter bag and note the volume.”
“Should we tag her?”
“Yes. It is in the bag by her chart. Also, give her the normal shots.”
“So we are using the new injectable tags.”
“Yes. Based on the testing, they are much more tolerable than the ones placed behind the ear. These are to be placed next to the hip bone.”
“Well since this is the first one, why don’t I watch you do it.”
“I planned on that,” replied Nancy with a smile. “Give her a local.”
A few minutes later Marie said, “Well she did flinch when you stuck that needle in her ass cheek.”
“That was a good sign. However, I am more surprised that other than breathing, she hasn’t moved at all. We need to monitor her closely, as so far her behaviour is different than we’ve seen.”
“Well the time in the crate is near the maximum we’ve set since the cooling was added.”
Marie said, “I gather that she is not a new resident.”
“Not in the normal sense. Madeline indicated that she will be staying here for a while,” replied Nancy. “Go ahead and give her a massage and focus on her hips and legs.”
“Will do,” responded Marie.
“Okay, I am going to rest,” noted Nancy.
Rose said, “I’ll stay after the massage so Marie can rest.”
“Fine,” said Nancy.
Meanwhile in the dining room Jan, Jen, and Jo found three settings waiting for them. They consisted of a large salad, a large burger with fries along with ice tea.
“This looks great,” said Jan. “Thank you for this.”
“You are welcome. I am known as Kim and my associate is Kathy. I understand that you have been addressing one another as One, Two, Three. Are those really your names?”
They chuckled then Jan said, “No, my name is Janice. Two was Jennifer. Three was Joyce. We normally refer to each other as Jan, Jen, or Jo.”
“So the one, two, three fits with the alpha sequence of your names. Interesting. It is now a little after 1 AM here but more like 3 AM where you live. We’ve set up a preliminary schedule as follows: After you finish eating, I will show you to a suite where you can get some rest. After breakfast, which is from 7:30 to 9, each of you are scheduled to have a physical. This will likely last most of morning. After lunch the site administrator, Madeline, will provide you with an overview of our operation here, why we invited you, and answer any questions you have. During this time, you will be asked to sign a confidentially agreement. It is the same as the one that I understand you verbally agreed to before you began your trip here. Following that we will give you a tour of the site which will likely take us up to dinner time, which is 6 to 7. I should note that you are the first to visit us without advanced preparation.”
“While our trip here was primarily to escort Susan, our client indicated that you wished to discuss another opportunity for us, for that we thank you,” responded Jan.
“While the physical and tour are a part of that offer, Madeline will discuss the opportunity with you tomorrow or actually later today. As to accommodations, we have a two room suite for the three of you. The suite’s bedroom has two queen size beds in it. We hope that is acceptable for now. If you would like separate rooms, or other sleeping arrangements, changes can be made before this evening.”
Jan, Jen, and Jo looked at each other then nodded. Jo said, “Based on your description, that should work just fine. Thanks for asking.”
“It looks like you are finished.”
The three nodded as Jen said, “For an early morning snack it was great.”
“Then let me show you to your suite.”
When they exited the dining room Kim said, “I don’t know if you’ve noticed but this common area has the shape of an octagon. Off of each face is a hall and they are lettered, so the hall directly across from us is Hall A. Then to the left is Hall B, then Hall C, then Hall D. Behind us would be Hall E, but on this floor it is known as the dining room. Next the hall to our right is Hall F, then the entrance to the gym, then Hall G. Hall G on this floor is our clinic. For your stay your suite is in Hall C on this floor.”
They followed Kim into Hall C, when she stopped she noted, “This is suite C102. Access to it is via the pad by the door. In a moment, we will set the pad to recognize your hand print. To do that, I will ask each of you to place your hand flat on the pad then state your name.”
After Kim opened the door, she set up their room access. With their access established, they entered the sitting room. Looking around they saw a large TV, a desk with a computer, a couch and two chairs. In the adjoining bedroom were two queen size beds, a large dresser, a chair and a walk-in closet. Off the bedroom adjacent to the closet was a bathroom with a large shower.
After taking a brief look around Jen said, “This is very nice.” Both Jo and Jan nodded in agreement.
Kim said, “We presume you need access to your email. To do that you can connect your computer via the Cat5e port by the desk or you can use the computer on the desk. There are additional network cables in the desk. The network access information is on a card on the table. There is also a site information book on the desk. If you need something, press 8 on the phone. Okay?”
Jen replied, “Yes, definitely.”
“I know it is late but would you all be agreeable to starting at 8 AM?”
“That should be fine as we were able nap during the trip,” replied Jan after glancing at her associates.
“In that case, by pressing 6 on the phone will let you set a time for a wakeup call. When you are ready to go to breakfast, press 8 and I will join you for breakfast. Until you’ve had a tour, we strongly prefer that you do not wonder about without an escort. However, if needed fire exits are clearly marked. Questions?”
Jo glanced at the others then said, “Not at the moment. Sleep well.”
“And you as well,” responded Kim.
After Kim closed the door, Jan said, “That bed looks very comfortable.”
“So what do you think,” inquired Jen.
“No bad vibes since arriving or from those we’ve met,” responded Jo. “Although after we left the parking garage in Chester, I was a bit edgy at times. I didn’t say anything, as both of you didn’t seem unsettled.”
“You and your vibes,” smirked Jen as Jan grinned. “I agree that there were times that I felt a bit edgy but now, not so much.”
“That is likely due in part to the difficulties we had yesterday,” noted Jan as she began to undress.
Jan said, “While you are getting ready for bed, I will check our email and the news sites.”
“Good idea,” responded Jen.
When Jen and Jo returned from taking shower, Jo said, “Anything interesting?”
“Nope,” replied Jan as she headed toward the bathroom. Jen and Jo began unpacking their clothes and hanging them up.
It wasn’t long before all three were cuddled together on one bed.
When Jan woke up, she initially wondered where she was for a few moments. Looking at the clock, she saw that it indicated 7:00 and it was now light out. Just then the phone rang. When she picked it up, she heard, “Good morning, this is your wakeup call.”
Needing to relieve the pressure she eased out of bed, and headed for the bathroom. By the time she finished, Jo was waiting her turn. When she returned to the bedroom, Jen was just getting up.
“That is a very comfortable bed,” said Jen as she stood up and stretched.
“Yes, I slept very well, which is unusual for me the first night in a new place. However, I always sleep well cuddled up next to you two.”
“Well I woke up briefly, as it was getting light out, but quickly went back to sleep. I did have a very comfortable nights sleep.”
“I did too,” noted Jan as she came back into the bedroom.
“I am going to take a shower,” said Jen. “It looks large enough for more than one.”
“Is that an invitation?”
“Do you think you need one?”
“Just asking,” responded Jen as she hugged Jo.
In another part of the building Madeline, the site administrator said, “Well Kim what was your impression of our visitors.”
“They were very alert but also relaxed. Jen was very concerned about Susan’s condition. The other two were concerned by didn’t express it with the same intensity that Jen did. Otherwise, they seem to match the profiles we were given for them. Their reputation as security providers seems to fit the need that we have but...”
“Well lets see how the physicals and the interviews go. I don’t see a need to interview them separately.”
“Neither do I. I plan on taking them to the dining room for breakfast.”
“Think that is wise. I could have someone else do it.”
“Well I already offered. Besides, it will give me an opportunity to get to know them a bit better. Then after your meeting with them, I will give them a tour. After the tour, I will indicate that they can roam the complex on their own, or we can have a resident escort them. By doing that it will give them the opportunity to explore the complex and to become acquainted with our residents. If there are issues, I am certain we will hear about them.”
“True.”
In their suite, Jo, Jen and Jan were finishing getting dressed when Jo said, “I am ready for breakfast.”
“Go ahead and call. I just need to run a brush through my hair again,” responded Jan.
Jen had hardly put the phone down when there was a knock on the door.
After opening the door Jo said, “Good morning, Kim. You must have been near by.”
“Well my room is just down the hall on the other side. Did you all sleep well?”
“Definitely,” they replied. “It was especially refreshing after not getting much sleep for the last two days.”
“Well let’s go. I don’t remember mentioning it, but breakfast and lunch are served buffet style for an hour well perhaps slightly longer. The evening meal is served home style. A portion of the kitchen is always accessible, so residents can fix themselves something at other times provided they clean up after themselves.”
“I gather there are quite a few people here,” responded Jan as they entered the dining room.
“Well depends on your definition of ‘quite a few.’” Kim guided them over to the buffet line, where they began selecting their choices.
The room had quieted momentarily when they entered, then conversations quickly resumed. Watching them select their food and the quantity, Kim was pleased to see that they were not picky eaters. She then realized that the quantity could be due to them being exceptionally hungry due to yesterday’s extended travel.
As they came to the end of the line Kim said, “Jan there is an empty table back to your right.” As Kim followed the group to the table, she exchanged greetings with several women as she passed them.
Once they were all seated Jen said, “We don’t usually fill our plates so full but it all looked very tasty.”
“Well I’ve found that the nice selection makes it difficult to keep from gaining weight as do many of the residents.”
“Well my excuse,” responded Jen, “is that we didn’t have very much to eat yesterday.”
It was quiet at the table as they all focused on their food. As they ate, Jan, Jen, and Jo, glanced around the room noting the interaction among the residents and its tone.
“To answer a question you asked while we were in the buffet line, we typically have between 36 and 48 residents as we don’t like have more than 2 per suite. Right now I believe we have 42 residents. Our maximum capacity is 56 residents plus staff.”
“When I looked out the window this morning, it looked a pretty wild out there along with quite a bit of snow,” noted Jo. “While we’ve enjoyed to outdoors, we don’t often get a chance to be out in snow.”
“True, we are rather isolated. Since we have a fairly long winter, we have a rather large gym with an indoor swimming pool. The gym has basket ball, volley ball, and hand ball courts. In addition to the gym, there are two exercise rooms. The common area on the second floor has a small theater area that we use for films, meetings, training sessions, etc.”
“Kim before we get to involved today, we need to check in with our office as our absence was not planned. From what I remember from last night, we can either call or use the internet?” queried Jan.
“Yes. When we finish here, we can walk back to your room as that will give you the most privacy.”
“Well it looks like we’ve all finished our coffee.”
“You can take a cup to your room. It is however your responsibility to see that the cup is returned to the dining room. By the way, we don’t provide room service.”
“Fine,” responded Jen. “We weren’t expecting it. What should we do with the sheets and towels when we leave?”
“You can just leave them or place them just inside the door. Will 20 minutes be enough time?”
“Should be more than enough,” responded Jo.
In their room Jan quickly logged in to their site and checked her messages. She left a message for Brandy, their office manager, regarding their absence then let her associates check theirs. Jen being the last logged off after checking with the others.
“The condo owner left a message indicating that there weren’t any errors last night,” said Jan. “If it occurs again they will let us know.”
“Excellent,” replied Jen with Jo nodding in agreement.
“We have a couple of calls to return in the next day or so. These are new projects and include installation.”
Jo said, “Did you tell Brandy that we would be unavailable for a couple of days.”
“I sent her an email,” responded Jan.
Just then there was a knock on the door. Jo opened the door and said, “We are ready.”
“Okay. The clinic is this way.”
On entering the clinic a nurse said, “Good morning, Kim.”
“Good morning, Rose. This is Jan, Jen and Jo. They are here for their physicals.”
“Welcome. Nancy left me a note advising me of what needs to be done so we can begin. She will be along shortly.”
“A problem?”
“No she was up quite a while with the woman who arrived last night.”
“Is she okay?” queried Jen.
