6th Tuesday – Lone Pine -
It was shortly before 4 AM when Jo returned to the Security Center. On entering she said, “Good morning, Lana. Beth.”
“Good morning,” replied Lana and Beth.
“Anything interesting happen since I left.”
Lana replied, “Well ... I am not sure how to answer that. Jan and Jen found solar panels on the other side of the ridge near the top. It supplies power to the observation post. What we thought was a blind, is actually the entrance to a cave. Currently the entrance is covered by a camouflage colored tarp and is backed by a thermal barrier. There are several small openings in the cover, probably to accommodate their surveillance gear. The cave was characterized as being fairly large. They found provisions for a variety of surveillance equipment. Based on what they’ve found, they think their focus is on photographing us using still cameras with high powered lens. They did find parabolic mikes, which conceivably would let them hear our conversations. Based on our experience, we think the distance is too great to hear anything useful. There were directional antennas so they were likely monitoring radios as well.
“By using high quality still cameras with very powerful telephoto lenses, they could conceivably obtain good quality facial images. Conceivably, those could be used to identify residents. However, Jan thought that since we wear wide brim hats when outside, she didn’t think the odds were very good.”
“While they were there, they took photos of the interior but decided not to leave a camera. They did place several listening devices around the cave. As they were leaving the cave, they added a multitude of cat prints through out the cave along with some cat piss at various spots. I found that puzzling.”
Smiling Jo responded, “The paw prints were done to distract the occupants. Now when someone enters the cave, they will have the impression that cats had been in the cave. Thus they will likely overlook any clues of our presence, such as the cameras and listening devices.”
“Oh ... That makes sense.”
Smiling Jo replied, “Did they put out receivers for the surveillance camera and recorders?”
“Yes. They did a test and we heard them. Won’t their receivers pickup the transmissions?”
“Perhaps. It depends on what frequencies they are monitoring. To the ear, the signal will be similar to noise. The type of antenna they are using will have an impact.
“So where are Jan and Jen now?”
“On the other side of the ridge. They went to watch the intruders approach the site. They indicated that we wouldn’t be able to hear them until they returned to this side.”
“Do you know if they took a break?”
“They did. It is noted, but from memory, each slept for several hours. This was after their visit to the cave.”
“Good. So how much longer were you planning on assisting today?”
“Well I thought, I would stay until shortly before breakfast as I need to let my milk down. Although I could stay a little longer.”
“No, that will be fine. Now let’s go over the logs, to see if we need to add any clarifications.”
“Earlier I compared Marcy’s notations to the messages received and didn’t see any issues. Based on past experience, it wouldn’t hurt for us to review them together as Marcy or I may have misunderstood some wording nuances.”
Smiling she replied, “Well we’ve worked together for a long time, long enough that we can sometimes complete the others thoughts. The other aspect is that it is amazing how many times you can read through errors before you see them.”
Laughing Lana said, “Oh, that is so true.”
It was just after 5 AM when a message from Jan indicated that two men were making their way toward the observation post. She indicated that Jen was going to check out their vehicle while she followed the two men.
Lana said, “So we will soon know whether we can hear them in the cave.”
“Well since the test was successful, we should. The recorder’s transmitters aren’t very strong, so we may need to wait until we have the memory cards to be sure of the content. However, we did put a parabolic antenna on the roof pointed in that direction.”
“You think of everything.”
Laughing Jo said, “I wish. This time we had input from more than the three of us.”
Nearly 40 minutes later, several loud curse words blasted out of the speaker.
“Oops,” said Lana as she reached to turn the volume down.
Jo said, “I guess that tells us that we can hear them if they talk loud enough.”
Next they heard voice1 say, “What the hell is that smell?”
Voice2 said, “Piss, I think. Based on the tracks on the floor, I think, we were visited by a big cat considering the size of those paw prints. I would have thought that our odor would have caused them to go elsewhere. You know that predators are known to mark their area using their piss. To me the odd aspect is that it was done even though we’ve been using the cave. I guess it could have been their cave before we set up here, but we’ve been here for a while.”
“So what should we do?” voice1 nervously inquired.
“What we were sent here to do?”
“What about the cat?”
“With us being here, it likely won’t return while we are here,” replied voice2. “If it does, we have a rifle. Now let’s straighten this mess up, then setup the cameras. Although, there probably isn’t any need to hurry, as in the past there wasn’t any outside activity until a couple of hours after sunrise.”
“So why are we here so early?”
“Primarily to avoid being seen. You probably didn’t notice but there isn’t much foliage obscuring their view of the game path we use from the ridge to here. So we arrive before first light, cause our sponsor presumes they are monitoring their surroundings.”
“I noticed some lights over that way as we turned toward the entrance. What about the mikes?”
“We’ll set them up after setting up the still cameras and video camera. Although, considering what we’ve been able to hear, I think the parabolic mics have been a wasted effort, but that is what the boss wants. Even so we need to start both of them recording once we have the cameras setup.”
“So what is the problem?”
“A couple. I don’t think the reflectors for the parabolic mics are large enough, but I am not an expert. Even so hearing and understanding a conversation is difficult at this distance. As to radio transmissions, we’ve never found any attributable to them even when the wranglers were in the canyon tending the cattle. The receivers are set to automatically scan a range of frequencies and record any transmissions detected, so we only need to start it and monitor its activity. Some times the scan will get hung up on a frequency due to noise. When it does tha we have to manually cause it resume scanning, then watch that it doesn’t get hung up on noise. We also need to monitor the storage space and change if needed. When we leave this evening, we need to take everything with us that we carried in.”
“Has it run out of storage space for the recordings?”
“A couple of times. I later learnt that it was due some cowboys chasing cows on 4-wheelers. The boss wasn’t happy, but it did confirm that the system was working.”
Lana said, “Couldn’t they hear us talking on our portable radios when we are out riding or in the barn?”
“Well ... they could? If they did, how would they know who was speaking as there are women wranglers on a few of the ranches. It could be that the radios we use operate on an unusual frequency. I’ll make a note to check on the frequency we use. We may want to do a frequency scan ourselves so we have an idea of what they are hearing.”
After a short time voice2 was heard, “Okay. We have everything set up. Now we wait and watch the video monitor for activity near the building. From there the activity may or may not move into the pasture. Initially look for it between the barn and the back of the main building or in the nearby pasture. A light will flash on the video camera when it senses motion.”
“With the high power lens on the video camera, why are we using the still cameras?” inquired voice1.
“It is my understanding that the still cameras sensors have a much higher resolution than the video camera. We are using the video camera to detect activity and the still camera to photograph a very small segment of the video camera view. The still camera’s lens has a very long focal length which greatly narrows the field of view. Now the complication is that they all wear hats with a large brim which shades their face. So even using the still camera, it is difficult to obtain enough detail to resolve a facial image. Any way our task is to take the photographs. At the end of our shift, we will turn in all of the recordings. Someone else will review them. Sometimes we get feedback but not often.”
After a few moments voice2 queried, “Are you from around here?”
“Nope. From south of here, down near the Colorado border. How about you?”
“Well I’ve been around here for about 8 years. Originally I am from a days drive north of here. Up until a year ago I was a wrangler. That ended when my horse went down with me as I couldn’t jump free. While I was recovering, the boss offered me this job. Now that I am recovered, I’d rather be out on the range, but the boss wants me to stay with this. While it is boring, the money is very good, so here I am. I bring a book to read.
“So what is your background?” asked voice2.
“Well in high school I liked history, so I went to college seeking a degree in history. Now some six years later, I have two degrees in North America history. Unfortunately I haven’t found a good job offering that utilized my history education or my talents associated with obtaining those degrees. After spending several months looking, my parents were anxious for me to become employed. About that time a friend told me that this ranch had an opening, that I might be interested in. So here I am. I agree that the pay is very good. As to the job, well we will see how it works out.
“So what’s the deal with this effort? It seems to be a strange way to spend a lot of money so there must be a goal. The impression I have of the owner is that he is very conservative and opinionated.”
“I agree with your impression of the owner. He does pay well and maintains the property. As to this effort, I really don’t know what is behind it. Although since starting this role I’ve heard rumors. Back when I started this assignment, I was simply told what needed to be done. No reasons were given for the activity or the ultimate goal. Since then I’ve heard a multitude of rumors about this ranch and in particular this canyon.
“So based on what I’ve heard, quite a few years ago the boss was all set to buy the ranch for back taxes. The taxes hadn’t been paid in several years as the owner had died and his estate was having difficulty finding a buyer. Supposedly the boss intended to move his primary residence to those buildings we are monitoring. He was so sure that it would be his, he had remodeling plans ready to initiate as soon a he completed the purchase. His wanting this property seems a bit odd to me, since it doesn’t abut his ranch. Actually there are two owners between this property’s boundary and his. However, before the property came up for tax sale, the owner’s estate donated it to a large fraternal organization who in turn paid the back taxes. I understand the boss was livid over the way it went down, as the taxes and penalties were paid late on the day before the sale was to be announced.
“The fraternal organization planned to use this place for retreats and other functions. They thought this location was ideal due to the surroundings and its remoteness. Due to its age and change in use, they remodeled it and added two wings. Once the was remodeling was complete, they hired several locals to take care of it. The canyon has excellent pasture, much better than the rest of the property. The fraternal organization covered some of their overhead by leasing the portions of the property to adjoining ranches. Initially they had activities several times a year, then after several years, the frequency of those activities diminished until there were none. When that occurred, the local staff was reduced to a caretaker, and sat unused for several years.
“It was over twenty or so years ago, when the present owners purchased the ranch. In doing so, they sort of pissed our boss off, as he had been attempting to buy it from the fraternal organization. Well the first thing the new owners did was initiate a major renovation. I’ve heard that the interior was extensively redone. Several additions were made, so there are now seven wings around its octagonal core along with a large gym between two wings. During this the out buildings were updated, the garage was enlarged and a shop was added. Many of the local craftsman were upset because only a few were hired to work out here and it was only on the out buildings.
“While it hasn’t been said to me and considering the source and the past events, I suspect this effort is part of a plan he has for gaining control of the property.”
“So what goes on there?”
“Well based on county records, it is a home for unwed mothers.”
“Interesting. You know, I think, I’ve been by where their lane touches the county road. I didn’t see any sign or mail box.”
“There isn’t. We’ve noted large SUVs and semis entering and leaving. So based on that, one could presume that they don’t interact with the local businesses very much. However, from what I’ve seen and heard, they do buy quite a bit of stuff from the local grocery, farmer’s market, and feed stores. I understand that some women from there have visited the local dance halls in the past but not recently. Based on a few stories floating around about those visits, there could be a good reason they don’t anymore.”
After several moments voice1 said, “Where do you hear all these rumors and stuff?”
“At various places like the cafes and bars.
“Ahh ... it looks like the camera detected something.”
A few moments later voice1 said, “I see it. I think it was a large cat, way to the left of the barn. I almost didn’t see it before it moved back into the brush. I took a couple of photos, although I am not sure it was in time to record what it was. Guess that confirms the tracks we found in here.”
“I would be surprised if it was a cat that close to the barn at this time of day.”
“Well in thinking about it a bit, I agree. My initial view indicated it was as large as a cat. Hmm, I probably made that association because of what we found here.”
“Well, you can recall the image to the camera’s screen. To me that feature is only useful for checking the exposure setting as it is so small.”
After a few moments voice1 enquired,”So what this about the dance hall?”
“Well, there were apparently several minor incidents when a group of women presumed to be living here visited one of the dance halls. In each case, the wranglers were upset with the women cause they bought them drinks and snacks then only received a thank you. The few women who danced with them wouldn’t dance with them a second time. This was likely due to the wranglers groping and the way wranglers wanted to interact as they danced. Several wranglers did not take being rebuffed graciously. In some cases this led to a physical altercation. Each time the woman involved put the wranglers down and in some cases down hard. When ever there was a confrontation, the women would leave shortly afterward.
“Now all the stories I’ve heard were all from the wrangler’s point of view and told quite some time after the events took place. From my perspective, having visited the dance halls, the women from here likely misunderstood the intent behind being given the drinks and snacks. This is because quite a few of the local women who visit those dance halls, did so with the intent of earning some money. While they don’t solicit, they are quite friendly when socializing with the wranglers. The interaction is often initiated by the men buying them a drink, which quite often leads to them eventually leaving with a wrangler. While initially the women living at this place may not have known that but after a few incidents I am surprised they didn’t realize what was afoot.”
“Well based on what you’ve said, you are presuming, that it was the same group of women from this facility each time.”
“Good point. In another incident, a group of I believe five women were abducted after leaving a dance hall. They were taken to a remote barn where they were stripped and hung by their wrists. Then after being whipped each one was tied to a bale of straw then raped multiple times. Then just before dawn, they were put to sleep then placed naked in the back of their truck. Their shredded clothes and personal items were placed in the truck with them. When the women woke up, they were likely very cold as it was late fall around dawn. They got the truck started and apparently made their way home. I don’t recollect rumors including any mention of a complaint being filed with the sheriff or State Poiice.
“After that incident, women apparently from this place would occasionally visit a dance hall. When they did, it was a larger group, and they arrived in two vehicles. They avoided interacting with most of the wranglers, but not all. With time, their visits to the dance halls decreased then stopped. It was some time after that, not sure if it was weeks or a months later when a wrangler was in an accident. After a few days he died due to his injuries. Supposedly he was one of those involved in the whipping and rape incident. Over a period of several months after that several other wranglers either died as the result of an accident or simply disappeared. These were wranglers who were believed to be involved in incident. The odd bit is that all of the wranglers worked for our boss. Although by the time the first wrangler died, none of the women believed to be from here had been seen in any of the area’s dance halls for quite some time. So the mystery continues, and the rumors flurish.”
“Well I have to admit, I’ve been to the dance halls in town as well as in several other places. The places in town seems to have quite a few single women on weekends. While I don’t often go, I’ve had some good times and others were so so. I have met some interesting people, but overall it is something to do occasionally, as I can think of better things to do during my free time and money.”
“I agree.”
“So there is nothing to the rumor that there is gold or oil in this canyon or surrounding area,” inquired voice1.
Laughing voice2 said, “So you heard that rumor as well.”
“Yes. It seems to me that it is a more substantial reason for why he has us doing this. There are a couple of other tidbits to consider. According to my understanding of the local area, this property we are on abuts an Indian reservation one side. I think it runs from around the northwest edge around to the east side.”
“I knew there was a reservation close by, but didn’t realize it was that close. I haven’t seen any Indians in town.”
“I believe most of their activity is mostly north of here. They have a casino on the northern end of the reservation in Montana.”
“Oh, oh, time to check the camera again. I see two riders moving northwest.”
“Looks like there are three people outside by the barn.”
“I agree.”
Hearing the door Jo looked up and said, “Good morning, Susan.”
“Good morning. Who was that talking?”
“The people in the observation post to our west. We’ve been listening to two guys in the blind, which turns out to be a cave with the opening covered. Jan and Jen managed to visit it late last night. While they were there, Jan and Jen setup some surveillance cameras with mikes and a transmitter. What you heard was the last part of a conversation between what apparently is an older employee and a new one. Since they’ve been there, we have heard a history based on rumors of the area for the last couple of decades or so from a wrangler’s point of view. How accurate it is, is a good question. I need to check my notes, but portions of it sounded very similar to the history Madeline provide us.”
“Interesting. I guess we got lucky.”
“Yes. So far, I think Jan and Jen’s excursion has been very beneficial. Jen was able to put a GPS tracker on their 4-wheeler. In doing so, we now have the name of the ranch, who owns the 4-wheeler, and its license number.”
“I can monitor the activity now, if you want to take a break and have breakfast.”
“I will take you up on that offer. So see you in a few.”
When Jo returned from breakfast Susan asked “What are your plans for the day?”
“Well if you can monitor Jan, Jen, and the radio, I think I should take a nap. So if that works for you, I will be back around noon, but don’t hesitate to summon me if our effort seems to be going astray.”
“Fine. While I am here, I will transcribe the conversation we heard then review the notes if there is time.”
“Great. We’ve reviewed the log, but another look would be good.”
