Thinking my life couldn’t get any better was merely an oversight on my part. The next months of enjoying my being with my fiancée, her girlfriend, oh, and my girlfriend, became an exercise in trying to maintain my sanity. Men don’t get this happy. I don’t think.

Tracy Wylde had a cousin. Her cousin needed a job. I owed Tracy a number of favors. She came collecting.

It seems Carly Graves, a first, and the most loved, cousin of Tracy, my supersmart engineer, was an organizer of anything that needed organized. She has worked as everything from a wedding planner to an executive secretary and personal assistant to a Fortune 100 CEO. That CEO was Helen Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Intrinsic Medical, the largest supplier of medical equipment in the world. They had purchased and revamped many of the smaller companies in the field, consolidated what each of them did best, cutting out all of the duplication, and proceeded to take over the industry. Helen was an enigma, and according to her, Carly was more than a small part of that success even though it was in the latter days of their corporate growth and prosperity.

Carly had a business degree, a generic one, but she got it at the ripe old age of twenty. I’m thinking maybe geniuses might just run in Tracy’s family. Since then, she has held three positions, the last of which was to be temporary, and both she and her boss knew it. It seems Helen Williams’ niece was an up-and-coming debutante, also doing well in school, and Helen wanted Carly to do the job for a couple of years or so, then stick around to teach her niece the ropes, take a substantial severance bonus, if all went well, and be on her merry way. Carly made about six hundred thousand for just under two and a half years of hectic, but rewarding work, then took some time off to visit family.

She was here in town, with who she also felt was her favorite cousin, Tracy, when the subject of employment got to the point where ‘what ifs’ surfaced.

“What if I could get you a job as a wedding planner for my boss?” That kind of ‘what if’. “Would you hang out for a while and spend some time? I’d love to have you stick around for a bit and catch up.”

“We’ll talk about it, but if he’s a jerk, I’ll strangle you. More so, if she’s a bitch, I’ll kick your peenie all the way down the block. I don’t need to work for a bit, so ... I just don’t want to put up with any idiots. Helen was a wonderful woman. Her niece is a snot nosed brat. If I don’t get a call to come back in a year or two, I’ll be surprised. There is only so much crap a woman, even family, can put up with.”

“I can understand that. Just to be open and honest, he is a peach, and she ... Well, if he’s a peach, she’d have to be a nectarine, or plum, I guess. They are great people, and their pets are neat, too. You’ll love them. Maybe too much, but that’ll be up to y’all.”

“You sound a bit enthralled yourself, cuz.”

“I am. If my sister and our wife weren’t around, I’d make myself available to him. He has enough women around him at home that he doesn’t need that, though. At work, now that’s a different story, and I’ll do everything I can to keep him happy, both intellectually and physically. Yes, I love him.”

“Ok, I’ll do it if you think it needs to be done. How do we proceed on this?”

“Leave it to me. My boss’s biggest failing is following up when he tells you, ‘I owe you one.’ He owes me more than one. I’ll get us invited to his house for a day of sunshine, swimming, hamburgers, and beer, then work my magic.”

“I don’t really like beer.”

“And THAT is the part of this conversation you picked up on? Jesus, Carly, I thought you were smarter than that. Then again, you are a natural blonde!” They both laughed.

Tracy shared that conversation with me, almost verbatim, according to her, when she called me.

“Charlie, do you remember all the times when you’ve said, ‘I owe you one’?”

“Yeah, I’m afraid I do. I meant it, but ... Am I gonna live through this, Tracy? You sound like you want my soul, not the return of a favor.”

“You’ll be fine, Charlie, and probably, more than likely, anyway, you’ll tell me after this is over, ‘I owe you another one.” She giggled.

I didn’t. I scoffed. “Yeah, right. What do I have to do?”

“You, in all your infinite wisdom, are going to hire my cousin, Carly Graves, as your wedding planner, then get out of her way. You have the money to pay for a nice wedding for your bride, and will probably be including your other women, won’t you?”

“Probably, if we can. I understand I can have four wives, or six, or is it seven now ... Anyway, Amy being one, and maybe Wendy is another, but Tiffany will want to be part of the ceremony from what I understand.”

“Well, let Carly handle it. Can we come out for the day on Saturday and talk to you and Amy about the situation? I promise you won’t be sorry.”

“Yes, I’ll have her, or Tiffy, call you. Be prepared. They’ll probably put you in charge of the meat, or the wine, or both. Sucks to be you.”

“You have no idea, boss. I’ll wait for the call.”

I talked to my women about the ‘situation’ and witnessed as grins formed on both Amy’s and Tiffy’s faces. They now had professional help. Wendy was out at the house for dinner with us at the time. She just laughed.

“Charlie, you have just been had! You are now the subject, and object, of a beautiful wedding and a major social event, the likes of which you have never participated in. You may have seen them in a magazine or something, but now, bucko, it’s happening to you. You should feel good about it, though, since people care. If it was not a good thing for you, Tracy wouldn’t have let her cousin get anywhere near you or Amy. I know she loves you. You know it, too, don’t you?” I had to nod. It was mutual, but she was otherwise involved. Wendy continued, “Deal with it. It’s not a romantic relationship, as we know, but she loves you, just the same.”

“I know, but what’s going to happen now?” I asked her.

“She’s going to make sure there is something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your wife’s shoe, and all the other things that need to take place in order to have a proper wedding. Charlie, do you trust me?”

“I love you, Wendy. Love supersedes trust. If I didn’t trust you, even with my life, I wouldn’t love you. Does that make sense, honey?”

She rose, approached me, and kissed me. “More than you know. Thank you for that. The opposite is true, by the way. I love you that much, as well. In any case, I think you will have a beautiful wedding. Tracy would have nothing less than that happen for you.”

“Okay, then, I’ll probably cave, but let’s find out more about this Carly girl before I give up my livelihood to a ‘wedding planner’,” I air quoted.

Number one, Carly Graves was a stunner. She was one hundred percent woman, a cute, young, spry, adorable, edible, pretty, gorgeous woman. Yes, all that. She was also a whirlwind. When she spoke, it was fact. When she questioned, she wanted an answer. When she looked at you ... Well, I caved.

The girls all loved her. Amy pulled her into the back room, just the two of them, and they came out fifteen minutes later, laughing like they had been telling each other jokes all their lives. I’m sure that meant something at the time, but all I saw was my demise before my eyes.

“I need some money,” my fiancée exclaimed.

“Typical female response to a typical female problem,” I told Amy. She smiled, getting a similar response from our new guest and her favorite cousin. No, scratch that. Tracy was out and out laughing. Tracy’s sister and wife were laughing as well. They had accompanied Tracy and Carly out to the house to watch the fireworks.

“I resemble that remark, but I’d like to give Carly a bit of cash to work with, you know, so she can ruin your life and attach it to mine.” Amy laughed and hugged me.

“Tell you what. Have her put a thumb print on a paper plate with bacon grease in the morning, just so I’ll have a record, then we’ll set her up with an account and a charge card, and see how much time, money, resources, and spumante she can waste on an old man, a beautiful woman, and a couple of wretches that say they like us.”

“We’re right here, and, no Charlie, we didn’t say we like you, dufus! We said we LOVE you!” Tiffy had a way with words. How to win friends and influence people, right?

That night, Carly, Tracy, Stephanie, Tracy’s sister, and Molly, their wife, spent the night. The evening consisted of a meeting of the minds, the minds of the stakeholders, that is. Not me. I spent the time with Tracy, Stephanie, and Molly, and a bottle of twenty-four year old scotch listening to war stories about me, work, the three of them trying to corral a specific man to father children for Stephanie and Molly, and how Molly was still a technical virgin, even after paying her way through college with cheerleading scholarships and a job working in an off campus beer joint.

Of all the stories, some of Molly’s were the funniest and most interesting. Of all her scholastic era accomplishments, she was most proud of retaining her hymen throughout school, but her MBA with honors, and her BA, Summa Cum Laude, were a close second and third.
