As the days went by, Lindsey was becoming more and more reliant on the pills. She would take them every day, sometimes even during the day when James was at school. Adam would come over and fuck her while James was gone. They had to be careful, though. They never knew when James would come home early from school.
Then one day, James came home from school to find his father gone. There was a note on the kitchen table. It read:
Dear Lindsay and James. I have decided to leave. I feel disconnected from the family, and I need to find myself. I will continue to send you money and child support until you are 18. But as it stands now, I haven’t been happy for the past few years. I will let you know when I am ready to be contacted. I do love you both. But I need to be selfish for once and think about myself. I’m always working. I’m never home. I’m never with my family. And when I do come home, it seems like you all do just fine without me. Besides, you don’t even need me. I’ll be in touch.”
James read the note over and over again. He couldn’t believe his dad. Left them
Lindsey didn’t take the news well. She broke down in hysterics. She ran upstairs to her room and locked the door. She wouldn’t come out. James tried to talk to her, but she wouldn’t respond.
He was scared. He didn’t know what to do. He called the police, not knowing who else to call. He needed someone to come help him. He needed someone to calm his mother down.
An hour later, a police officer showed up at the house. He was a big, tall Hispanic man. Officer Ramirez James showed him to his mother’s room.
At first, the officer came off as kind of a dick. But James could tell he was just trying to do his job. He knocked on the door and identified himself.
“Ma’am, my name is Officer Ramirez. I need you to open the door,” he said loudly.
Lindsey didn’t respond. James looked at Officer Ramirez nervously.
“She’s not going to open the door,” James said.
Officer Ramirez sighed. “Ma’am, I need you to open the door. I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to talk to you,” he said again.
Still, there was no response from inside the room. Officer Ramirez looked at James.
“Is there another way into this room?” he asked.
James nodded. “The window. But it’s locked,” he said.
Officer Ramirez nodded. “I’ll be right back,” he said. He walked back downstairs and out the front door.
A few minutes later, James heard a noise coming from his mother’s window. He heard Officer Ramirez’s voice.
“Ma’am, I’m coming in. Please don’t be alarmed,” he said. A few seconds later, Officer Ramirez climbed through the window into the room. James watched as he walked over to his mother, who was lying on the bed, crying.
Officer Ramirez sat down next to her on the bed. “Ma’am, can you look at me, please?” he asked gently.
Lindsey slowly sat up. She looked at Officer Ramirez through tear-filled eyes.
“What’s your name, ma’am?” Officer Ramirez asked.
“Lindsay,” she replied, her voice shaking.
“Okay, Lindsay. I need you to tell me what’s going on. What happened?” Officer Ramirez asked. He had a kind look on his face. James could tell he really did care.
Lindsey took a few deep breaths. She wiped her eyes. “My husband left me,” she said. “He said I was a bad mother. That I was a bad wife. He said he needed to find himself.”
Officer Ramirez listened intently. “I’m sorry to hear that, Lindsay. That must be very hard for you,” he said gently. “Can you tell me more about what happened?”
Lindsay nodded. She told Officer Ramirez everything. She told him about how her husband had been acting strange. How he had been working all the time. How he had hardly been home. She told him how he had left the note. How he had said he needed to find himself.
Officer Ramirez listened to everything she said. When she was finished, he nodded.
“It sounds like your husband is going through a tough time,” he said. “Sometimes, men feel like they need to get away. Like they need to find themselves.”
Lindsay looked at him, horrified. “But that doesn’t make it right,” she said. “He shouldn’t have just left me and James.”
Officer Ramirez nodded. “You’re right. It doesn’t make it right. But sometimes, people do things when they’re hurting. When they’re scared,” he said gently.
Lindsay looked down at her hands. She was quiet for a long moment.
“But what am I supposed to do now?” she asked finally. “How am I supposed to take care of James by myself?”
Officer Ramirez smiled kindly. “You’re strong, Lindsay. You can do this. And you have James. He’ll help you,” he said.
Lindsay smiled slightly. “Thank you, Officer Ramirez. Just talking to you made me feel a little better,” she said.
Officer Ramirez stood up. “You’re welcome. And please, call me Carlos,” he said. He handed her a card. “If you ever need to talk, or if you need help, don’t hesitate to call me.”
Lindsay took the card. “Thank you, Carlos,” she said again.
Carlos nodded. He looked at James, who had been watching everything silently.
“Take care of your mom, okay?” he said to James.
James nodded. “I will,” he said. Carlos smiled.
“Good. I know you will,” he said. He turned and walked back to the window. He climbed out and closed it behind him.
James and Lindsay were alone again. Lindsay looked at James.
“James, come here,” she said softly.
James walked over to her. He sat down next to her on the side of the bed. She put her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
“Everything’s going to be okay,” she said. “We have each other. We’ll get through this together.”
James hugged her back. “I love you, Mom,” he said.
She kissed him on the cheek. “I love you too, baby,” she said. James smiled. He felt better now. He knew that his mom was strong. He knew she would get through this.
James’s mom looked at him. She smiled. “Thank you for calling for help. I don’t know what I would have done without you,” she said.
James looked at her. “You don’t have to thank me, Mom. I just wanted to help you,” he said.
His mom nodded. “I know. That’s why I’m so proud of you,” she said. She kissed him on the forehead. James felt a warmth in his chest. He loved his mom. He would do anything for her.
They sat there for a long time, just hugging each other. James didn’t want to let her go. He was afraid she would start crying again.
But she didn’t. She just held him. And he held her.
After a while, James’s mom spoke. “James, can I ask you something?” she said.
“Of course, Mom. What is it?” James replied.
His mom was quiet for a moment. “Do you think I’m a bad mother?” she asked softly.
James was taken aback. “What? Of course not, Mom. Why would you ask that?”
His mom shrugged. “Your father said I was. In the note. He said I was a bad wife and a bad mother,” she said. Her voice was sad.
James felt a surge of anger. How could his father say that? His mom was a great mother. She loved him. She took care of him.
“Mom, that’s not true. You’re a wonderful mother. I don’t know why Dad would say something like that,” he said.
His mom smiled slightly. “Thank you, James. That means a lot to me,” she said.
They sat there in silence for a long moment. Then James’s mom spoke again.
“James, can I tell you a secret?” she asked.
James looked at her curiously. “Sure, Mom. What is it?”
His mom took a deep breath. “I don’t think I was a good wife. At least, not lately. I think that’s why your father left,” she said sadly.
James felt his heart sink. He didn’t know what to say.
“I’m sorry, Mom,” he said finally.
His mom shook her head. “Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault. It’s mine. I wasn’t paying attention to your father. I was too busy with other things,” she said.
James didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to make his mom feel better.
“I’m sure Dad will come back,” he said finally. “He’ll realize he made a mistake. He’ll want to come home.”
His mom smiled sadly. “I don’t think so, James. I think he’s gone for good,” she said.
James felt tears sting his eyes. He didn’t want to cry in front of his mom. But he couldn’t help it. He felt so sad.
His mom saw the tears in his eyes. She hugged him tightly. “It’s okay, James. We’ll be okay. We have each
True to his word, child support checks started coming. They were deposited into the bank account that Lindsey and her ex-husband, George, shared. There was always enough to cover their expenses, and then some. Enough for whatever James needed for school or for anything essential.
But he still hadn’t contacted them. At this point, Lindsey didn’t know if she wanted him to. She was actually doing okay. She only took the pills on the weekends, when she really needed to.
But one side effect of all of this was that she had tried to wean herself off of the sleeping pills. She was doing a good job.
