Abby was out of the house at six and Aster by seven-thirty to go to another studio, Teralux Studios, for the start of her script reading with the cast of her next movie. I had a nine o’clock with Freddie at a small restaurant he wanted to meet at. I was led to a booth in the back where Freddie had a laptop plus a bundle of scripts on the table beside him.
“Morning Freddie,” I said as we shook hands.
“Morning Sam, how was your vacation?” he asked as we sat down.
“Good, it was nice to get away from the city for a week and just relax,” I told him. “How are you doing?”
“Good, keeping busy,” was his reply.
The waitress came over with the coffee pot but only poured a cup for Freddie while I asked for an apple juice. We quickly perused the menu and were ready with our order when she came back.
“Alright, Invasion is in the can, except for minor touch ups and it will probably be a year before it premieres, hopefully in late June or early July,” Freddie started. “So, I’ve been getting calls and scripts for you to act and other calls for stunt work. Acting pays much better and is usually less wear and tear on the body, so we should concentrate on that first and only take stunt work as fillers between movies if we can help it. Agreed?”
“If we can step right into another film then I totally agree but I like to keep busy so anything over a couple weeks wait and we could slip in some stunt work,” I compromised.
“I don’t think you’re going to need to worry about money with the calls and scripts I’ve been getting for you,” he responded dryly. “I have a lead in a romantic comedy that is starting up in a couple months with a seven figure offer if they like the audition and the screen test. That can be scheduled for this week. There is an interesting action/comedy film supporting role that is holding auditions this week as well that you’ve been invited to attend. We haven’t discussed money but it would be less than the leading role, but you’d be a cinch to get it. That starts in two weeks. After that, we have spy movie that have some stunts but a lot of dialogue that would start in four months but the auditions start later this week and go on for a couple weeks.”
“They all sound interesting, do I have to chose just one of them or can we fit them all in?” I asked.
He laughed before responding, “Most actors would just hope to get one of the roles and you’re already thinking about all three. I love your optimism but, even with your popularity right now, you need to temper your expectations. Scheduling conflicts will limit what you can take on as well. Before we take on any new role, the publicity campaign of all your previous films will have to be taken into account. We need to get a schedule started and mapped out to use during negotiations. For now, read the scripts, role summaries and some of your lines to see in which order you would prefer me to go after them and then we’ll get your auditions scheduled.”
“Alright, I’ll get on it right after we finish and I’ll have an answer for you in the morning,” I told him as I pulled the scripts to my side of the table. “Do we know who would be cast in the other roles or the director and other crew would be? That could affect my decision or at least whether the film would do well.”
“Now you’re thinking properly,” Freddie replied. “Inside the cover will be the list of producers, directors, and other crew members. The next page will list the main roles and, if they have been chosen, the actor or actress who was committed to that role.”
“You know who’s who in this town,” I responded. “Did you already pick the three best films with the best crew and cast or should we review that now?”
“I have reviewed about a dozen scripts and these three have the best crew, producers and the cast that has been chosen, so don’t worry about that,” Freddie assured me. “For now we’ll stay with major studios and known producers and directors so we know the film is financed properly and will be made. As you get more experience and your acting improves, we can pick and choose a few more serious and ambitious roles for the acclaim.”
“Understood,” I said. “That sounds like a good plan. Can I show these to Aster to help decide which roles to take?”
He thought about it for a few moments before replying, “That should be fine, she’s a smart woman who has been through all of this before and can guide you. However, you have to take her advice with the knowledge she might have alternative reasons for guiding you in a certain direction.”
“How so?” I asked.
“Could be simple jealousy, if she is worried about an actress and you interacting, especially if there are love scenes,” Fred explained. “Other reasons could be scheduling conflicts, or she has had issues with someone on the cast or crew or has an opinion about the script. In most cases she will have good advice for you but if in doubt, ask her about the reasons so you’re comfortable. For now, any of the scripts I give you will be a good choice so if she concurs then there are no issues.”
“Understood,” I said as the waitress brought out our breakfast.
We put aside the conversation and just talked a bit about our families. Freddie had a wife and two kids in college, a twenty-one year old daughter and a nineteen year old son. I gave him an abbreviated history from the Dallas script with being an orphan and surviving foster care before getting a community college computer science degree. When we were done, I paid for the meal and we left the restaurant, agreeing to have a conversation tomorrow by nine am. I went to my apartment and read through the summaries and did some brief research on the producers and directors and then the major cast that my character would interact with.
As Freddie had mentioned, all of the directors and producers were well known and respected so no issues there. I liked the look of the actress in the rom con; a young blonde, Trisha Macron, making her film debut after starring in a TV series with critical and commercial success. The film was about a nerd getting hired at a tech company out of college with the young beauty being an out of reach marketing rising star, with both being assigned to the new product based on his thesis work.
The action/comedy movie role was playing a bodyguard to a popular female wrestler who was always being hit on by unwanted suitors. I actually laughed at a few of the situations she got into with other wrestlers of both sexes and some of the more ardent fans. While I wasn’t a wrestling fan, it seemed that it would be popular with their fans as some of the cameos would be actual wrestlers that I would have to interact with while trying to be a professional body guard.
The final film wasn’t an English spy movie, or an American CIA movie but more about a high stakes industrial espionage, stealing a certain company’s secrets or sabotaging their critical projects and product lines. There were two roles up for grabs, the bad guy doing the espionage and the good guy trying to stop it. There was some action but most of it was acting and dialogue and tense scenes where the bad guy could get caught or the good guy almost catches him. I liked it for a more substantial acting role, especially the bad guy’s role, but wasn’t sure if the film would be successful with the public, where most viewers wanted a lot of physical action and fighting.
All three had something that drew me to each film. Two were leading roles for good money and the third action/comedy film had lots of stunts and comedy that I would be involved in trying to protect her from large men and women. I would be the serious bodyguard having to throw them around and looking calm and cool immediately afterwards. I packed up the scripts, grabbed some more clothes and drove to Aster’s home to make meatloaf and mashed potatoes with a beef gravy in time for both ladies to arrive, shower and join me at the table. We discussed our days and Aster described the reading process of the new movie with the cast, directors, screen writers, and others. They went through the major scenes twice, once with normal voices and then once with some direction on tone, accent and emotion. She did say that the leading man was cute and showed Abby a picture. I got my revenge when I showed them pictures of my possible co-stars for the rom-con and action/comedy movie roles.
We moved to the living room after we cleaned up the dishes and they sat on either side of me as we went through the scripts. They liked all three movies but thought the rom-con or the spy movie would be better with serious lead roles but the action/comedy supporting role could steal the show as the comedy relief but with action rather than words. Next, the proposed schedules were reviewed and it looked like I could fit in two auditions and call backs this week, plus the audition next week for the espionage movie. The bodyguard supporting role would start the next week after that and would last up to six weeks, depending on shooting schedule, which would just in time for the start of the romcom film to start. That would end just in time for the espionage if I got all three roles.
“It’s doable but a very tight schedule,” Aster finally said. “I’d say audition and do screen tests for all three and see what happens. We better get your schedule made up on your laptop and make sure it’s transfers to your phone with all of this penciled in as possibles.”
I got up to get my laptop before we worked on that so I was ready for Freddie in the morning and for the auditions and screen tests and questions they would have about my schedule. Everyone was tired after a long day of work or reading, whether out loud or the scripts to myself so we went to bed early, set the alarms before I gave my ladies each a massage that had them moaning in appreciation before they both fell asleep on me. I decided to try to sleep and get up early to read the scripts for the first two movies.
I had two coffee travelling mugs ready for my ladies by six and six-thirty Tuesday morning and they kissed me and told me to break a leg before leaving. I read the rom-com screenplay until eight and then showered before meeting Freddie at the same restaurant for nine.
Freddie didn’t talk me out of auditioning for all three, just reminded me that the odds of all three coming to fruition were low. He made some calls and got me the first addition this afternoon at two for the romcom and another tomorrow morning on the bodyguard film. I thanked him for getting the auditions and I asked how I should dress and act for each. I had an idea to go in dressed as an adult nerd with glasses to start with and then switch to a GQ look if they let me.
“That’s a good idea but you might only get one shot at it,” Freddie replied. “Bring the glasses and put them on after explaining your thoughts but dress for a GQ look to start. For the bodyguard, dress pants, tight, short sleeve dress shirt, carrying a blazer.”
“Sounds good,” I said.
“Just be yourself at the start, confident, polite and cheerful and then when they give you lines or a scene, go with nerdy or confident as the scene dictates,” he continued. “For the bodyguard, I’d be the same confident, polite and cheerful but then play it like a serious bodyguard, to the point of overplaying that. That’s the whole point of the role, be a bodyguard against all types of people, some of which might be able to kick your ass. You can explain your martial arts and how you can use it if required or not, depending on how they want to portray the role.”
“Alright, I agree that’s probably the best way to play it,” I agreed.
“Good luck and let me know how each goes from your perspective,” Freddie finished up. “I’ll get feedback from their side as well and either you’ll get called back for a further screen test or they might do it right away. We’ve got all week to get them done for both before next week’s espionage auditions.”
“Thanks Freddie, I’ll keep you in the loop,” I replied before we left the restaurant.
I went back to my apartment and shaved, showered and made sure my suit was in good shape for tomorrow and found a professor type tweed blazer and a shirt and dockers for today’s audition. I found my old glasses that I could slip on as well as suspenders that I could wear under the blazer but take them off if things didn’t feel right.
After lunch, I left early to the Sutherland Studios, an old time studio that was still hanging on. I had to sign in and get a parking pass before finding the right lot and then the room for auditions. I was still fifteen minutes early but checked in with a young woman who had me take a seat beside another guy as they were running a bit late. I didn’t recognize the actor already sitting but nodded at him and he nodded back. It was five minutes before another actor came out and the woman walked the next guy in and introduced him to whoever was waiting inside the room. That guy came out ten minutes later, looking less than amused and quickly walked away. The woman stood up as did I and she walked me in.
“This is Sam Rollins, a client of Freddie Gant and just finished filming Invasion as the supporting actor, robotics programmer and stuntman,” the woman said to a table of three men and a woman.
“Welcome Sam, of course we all saw the video of the helicopter crash and your rescue of the pilot and we’ve heard good things about your performance taking over for the previous actor so we reached out to Freddie to have you come in and audition for the lead in our new film, for now we’re referring to it as The Nerd and the Lady.”
“Good afternoon and thanks for having me in,” I replied. “As you are aware, I’m quite new to acting but it seems to be something I enjoy and hope to refine as I get some more experience. For this film, I may be able to draw on my computer science degree and my programming experience to channel my inner nerd but then my martial arts and stunt work to segway into the man you want the nerd to end up as.”
“Excellent, that’s what we need to see from you,” the woman spoke up. “We have two scenes for you to act out, a nerd and then more of a ladies man. Have a quick read of the lines and then let’s see how you do.”
I nodded and picked up the one sheet of laminated paper and it had it divided into two sections, appropriately labelled Nerd and Ladies man. I recognized the scenes from the script as they had a small blurb describing the scene and then the lines listed below, with Nerd or Lady showing at the left whose line was whose.
I quickly read through both scenes to refresh my memory and then put them down. I pulled out my glasses and put them on and then unbuttoned my blazer so they could see my suspenders.
“I’m ready when you are,” I told them.
One of the men hit a button on the camera sitting on the table and then said, “Sam Rollins, audition for The Nerd and the Lady, take one.”
He nodded to me and I started.
“Miss Larkin, the X400 isn’t just a child’s toy, it’s the culmination of two years of programming, debugging, testing, reprogramming, building prototypes, testing, improving until it works like no other robot ever built. It’s AI is the best in the business and the sensor feedback on the touch pads for it’s end effectors give it instant analysis of it’s environment.” I pontificated.
The woman read the female line, “I don’t care how it was made, just how to market it, and I say it’s a child’s toy.”
“It can be so much more than that, it can take care of a whole house, replace workers in dangerous jobs and adapt and learn new things at a phenomenal rate,” I protested. “It’s as much a child’s toy as a wagon is a Formula One race car.”
“Be as it may, that’s not why we bought the rights,” she responded. “Now we need you to make it safe for children to operate and be around, so reprogram it and make it look adorable, not like an alien bug and do it before the Christmas shopping season gets underway.”
“What do you want it to look like, a pink unicorn?” I asked sarcastically.
“No, a little man robot that comes in different sizes and different colours would be nice,” she answered.
“That would entail a totally different frame, end effectors and a bipedal method of walking,” I retorted. “I could possibly make a rolling base but bipedal robotics are not developed enough to be used in a child’s toy, it would fall over way too much.”
“Do what you have to do to make it work obviously, you’re getting paid a lot of money to use that big brain of your to make it happen,” she said. “I want to see the redesign before you start building the prototype.”
I just nodded with a sigh and that was the end of the scene.
The man reached over and shut off the camera and they looked at each other before the original person that greeted me spoke up.
“Sam, that was excellent, exactly what we envisioned the character would sound and act as an older nerd,” he told me as the others nodded and smiled.
“I liked your adlibs with the wagon to Formula One line,” the woman added.
“Excellent, you never know if something like that will go over well,” I replied. “Give me a second and I’ll be ready for the second scene.”
I pulled off the glasses, the blazer and the suspenders and undid a button on the shirt while rolling up the sleeves. I ran a hand through my hair to unflatten it and then put on a more, for the lack of a better description, a manly look. I even modulated my voice when I said I was ready.
“Sam Rollins, audition for The Nerd and the Lady, take two,” the man said after he turned on the camera again.
“David, what are you doing here?” the lady read the first line.
“Angela, nice to see you, I’m just getting in a workout,” I replied. “I didn’t know you took karate.”
“I’ve just started actually, there was an incident on the train that made me want to be able to defend myself better,” the woman responded.
“You’re definitely in the right place to learn then,” I said. “I have a half hour session in the back but I’ll come get you after your introductory class and I’ll show you a few moves and then we’ll grab a coffee and you can tell me more about the incident.”
“Okay, I guess,” she said hesitantly.
“Great, remember to stretch well at the start of the class or you’ll pull something,” I told her. “See you soon.”
“Angela takes her class but it finishes without David showing so she goes looking for him and sees him fighting with an older man, both in their Gi, in another room. The fight ends with David putting the older man on the ground with a takedown and stopping a punch just before hitting the man’s face. They get up and bow to each other before they walk to the door where Angela was watching.
“Hi Angela, sorry I wasn’t there at the end of your class, our training session went longer than anticipated,” I said. “How was your class?”
“It was good, we learned where and how to hit someone to deter them, and then we practiced those,” the lady read.
“Good, that will work on any unskilled mugger, but how about I show you a couple moves that will work on a more skilled opponent,” I suggested.
The lady read that they worked on the moves and got physically close and the attraction grew. Now at the coffee shop she continued the dialogue.
“David, I never suspected you were so physical and in good shape,” she read. “You seemed different at the dojo, more assertive.”
I shrugged and replied, “I’ve been doing this for years and confidence grows with experience. I teach classes there now and you have to be poised and firm with younger students who think they are farther along than they really are.”
“So why aren’t you like this at work?” she asked.
“It’s a new job and you had a definite plan for the robot that no matter what I said, you weren’t going to waver on,” I responded. “I’m confident in my skills and expertise with all aspects of the robot but not so much dealing with people, especially in the real business world. I’m sure that portion will improve with experience, either at Innovative Tech or elsewhere.”
“You’re considering moving? We’re about ready to launch the Child-Bot next week!”
“Then my contract is up and I really don’t want to make toys with my innovations,” I replied.
“I finally get used to working with you and find out you’re a black belt and now you’re going away?” she said.
“I may be leaving the company but doesn’t mean we couldn’t see each other outside of each other’s work,” I responded. “The night is young, let’s go get cleaned up at my place and then we’ll go to that new Thai restaurant downtown.”
“I see you didn’t make that a question,” the lady said.
“No I didn’t,” I said.
“David leans over and gives her a kiss and then they leave the coffee shop and go to his apartment,” the lady read the rest of the scene description.
“Even better than the first take,” the original man said as the others nodded again in agreement. “I think we can move on to a full screen test with our ‘Angela’, Trisha Macron. She is here today to see if any of our potential leading men made it through the first audition. You’re our only one today so if you have a bit more time, we’d like to get you two on a set and run through the scenes in proper wardrobe. We’ll film it and then we can all review and see if there is chemistry between the two of you.”
“Sure, I left time in my schedule for that possibility this afternoon,” I responded.
“Good, now, should it go well, is your schedule open to start filming in two months?” the third man inquired. “We have an aggressive eight week schedule for filming.
“Yes, as of now, that time is open,” I said. “I have a possible supporting role that could start in less than two weeks but would only last six weeks and then I have another potential role in four months so it may all fit together nicely or all fall apart.”
I grinned at that and continued, “I’m being extremely optimistic as Freddie has already pointed out but I like to keep busy and have a variety of films under my belt so I’m not typecast. Your film is at the top of my list so if we come to an agreement first, then the others will have to be fit around your schedule.”
They looked at each other and the lady said, “Let’s get Trisha and Sam into make up and get the screen test done first while you two get with Freddie and dial in a schedule and possible contract numbers so we can move quickly if we all like the results.”
“Good plan,” the lead man said. “Why don’t you walk Sam over to the set now and give Trisha a call along the way.”
She nodded and waved at me to follow her out another door. I grabbed my blazer and suspenders and thanked the three men before walking to the door.
“I’m Diana Reston, the director of this film,” she introduced herself as we quickly walked from one building to another across and down the street.
“It’s nice to meet you Miss Reston,” I responded.
“It’s Mrs. but call me Diana or I’ll be looking for my mother-in-law and cringing every time,” she said with a grin.
“Alright Diana,” I replied with an answering grin.
“So, I hear you’re boyfriend to Aster Sundin, are we going to have an issue with the love scenes with Trisha?” she asked.
“I don’t think so, as long as we don’t actually have sex,” I responded. “It’s good that you and probably Trisha know about Aster is my girlfriend so we don’t cross lines. She’s starting a new movie this week as well and there will be a love scene with her leading man so we just have to trust each other that everything will be professional. I know you’ll need me to act as if I’m infatuated with her and then highly engaged during the love scenes and I’ll do my best to be in the moment without crossing the line.”
“Okay, that’s probably our only worry, other than if you two have chemistry but also can be frosty towards each other for the first part of the film,” Diana informed me.
“I don’t know her but she seems pleasant in the couple of videos I looked at this morning, so hopefully she is either like that in real life or can act very well so we can work together,” I remarked. “I have nothing to be arrogant about and I’m not bringing any baggage to the set so I can get along with just about anybody.”
“That is good to hear,” Diana said as she opened the door with a green light above it. “I’m sure you know not to come into a set if the light is red, right?”
“Definitely,” I replied as I held the door and let her go in first.
She led me through a maze of sets and cluttered rooms with all the things you needed to film a movie until we got to a tent with a bright mirror and a chair.
“I’ll leave you with Cherl and she’ll get you made up and dressed into what we think the Nerd should look like and she’ll bring you to the set,” Diana said. “Cherl, meet Sam Rollins.”
“Oh, I know Sugar, I made him into a star on Invasion,” the large black woman walked out of the corner. “Don’t you worry Diana, I’ll have him looking the part in no time and you’ll have him as your leading man today.”
“Well, if Cherl says it, then it usually happens, so I’ll just say break a leg and see you on set,” Diana said before leaving us alone.
“It’s nice to see you Cherl, you certainly found a new film quickly,” I said. “It’s great to have a familiar face on a new set.”
“Sugar, this isn’t coincidence, Freddie thought you’d do well so he gave me the heads up on the weekend and I got on board yesterday,” Cherl informed me. “I can’t have just anyone making sure my Sugar is looking just right for every shot.”
“I’m flattered that you think so highly of me and I hope I never disappoint you,” I told her as I climbed up onto her chair after putting down my blazer and suspenders.
“Just stay humble and kind to everyone and you never will,” she told me. “Okay, let’s try to make you look like a nerd, I’ll probably get an Oscar if I can pull it off. You’ll come back and we’ll wash it all off and get you into a Gi and let your handsome face and hot body do the rest in the second scene. We’ll have to find a way for you to take off your top on set so Trisha and the others see just how sexy that body is.”
I laughed at her as she gave me a look up and down before she started to make my face look nerdy. Twenty minutes later she had me in an even nerdier outfit, with a shirt buttoned up to the top with an honest-to-God pocket protector, while the pants were blue dress pants, but not a nice navy blue.
“Jesus, I couldn’t look any nerdier if I tried,” I told her. “Great work as always Cherl.”
“I’ve outdone myself, I must admit,” she responded with a grin. “Alright, let’s get you over to the set.”
I followed her and she led me down a hallway and onto an office setting, with a glass conference room as the main focus in the middle of the set.
“Okay, knock them dead with your nerdy computer and robot jibber-jabber and then I’ll put you back into a stud and you can show off your martial arts skills before you melt her with a kiss,” she directed. “Remember not to tear off all her clothes in the coffee shop now, even if she’s smitten.”
I laughed while shaking my head before walking onto set towards Diana and Trisha. Diana turned when she saw Trisha’s eyes widen and she broke into laughter upon seeing me.
“Cherl is as much as an artist as anyone,” Diana said. “Trisha, meet Sam Rollins, he’s made up as the Nerd so let’s get to the first scene without much interaction so you can be in character right away.”
I just smiled at Trisha who tried to hide a grin before she turned away and went to sit on the other side the table. She was wearing a sexy power suit with a short skirt and I admired her body while she walked until she took her seat. It took her a few seconds to get a haughty look on her face before Diana had me sit across from her. There were cameras at either end of the table as well as behind both of us.
“Alright, Sam and Trisha screen test, take one for The Nerd and the Lady,” Diana said as she walked off the set. “And Action!”
The scene went well, with Trisha playing Angela Larkin in a haughty manner of a young professional who knows she’s good at her job. I didn’t go full nerd but played it very similar to my early audition. I thought it went well and Trisha smiled when we were done.
“That was terrific,” Diana said after she had called “Cut!”. “Alright, no need to do that again, let’s get Sam out of that nerd outfit and you can both get into your Gi and we’ll meet at a different set. We’ll have to find a real Dojo to film at but it will do for now.”
I thought about mine and my Sensei as a sparring partner but would wait to suggest that until I had the contract signed. I walked back to Cherl’s tent while Trisha went elsewhere to change.
“Alright, that went well, even though I might have overdone the nerdiness,” Cherl admitted. “Let’s get you looking manly.”
