Thursday morning I found out that Aster wasn’t a morning person when I woke her up after I had a shower and had gotten dressed in my spare set of clothes, carrying in a cup of coffee for her. Even after she had drunk the whole cup and had a shower, she still wasn’t the cheerful and loving woman from the night before.

“I assume we’ll be driving in separately and not showing any affection towards each other on set?” I asked.

She looked at me for a few seconds and finally answered, “As you can see, I’m a bitch in the early morning so best to avoid me until after two or more cups of coffee and after at least nine or ten in the morning. So yes, we’ll drive in separately, act friendly but not as lovers. It will get out eventually but let’s not announce it to the world just yet. On the other hand, if any starlet comes sniffing around, don’t get drawn in to anything or I’ll have to eviscerate both of you, faster than the alien did to you yesterday, and much, much deeper.”

“Yes ma’am,” I replied, without a grin. “I’ll head out now and see you there soon. I did want to tell you that I really enjoyed our night together and hope to have at least a kiss after ten.”

“Maybe, if you don’t annoy me too much,” she said with a roll of her eyes. “Begone with you before I run you over with my car.”

“Going,” I said and left by the garage door and used the button on the wall to open the garage door for my side.

I had to let the door stay open as I drove off and then had to wait a bit for the guard to let me out on the exit side of the gate as I didn’t have an opener for that either. Eventually I got to the studio and called Freddie from the parking lot.

“Sam, I was just going to call you,” Freddie said when he picked up. “Harold and Jack loved the tapes of you and Aster from yesterday so Jack called me yesterday evening and we got down to brass tacks. We ended up with five hundred thousand as a salary and one point in the movie, plus another one hundred grand for all the stunts, and better yet, a line stating you didn’t have to participate in any of the pre-launch publicity tours or tv appearances. That cost you a hundred grand easy but it’s what you wanted.”

“That sounds very good Freddie, congratulations on a good negotiation,” I told him. “What are the next steps?”

“I’ll meet you at the studio and we’ll sign the contracts and you’ll get two hundred thousand up front which I’ll deposit in my account and put most of it into your account this afternoon,” he replied. “You’re good to start the scenes this morning and I’ll let Jack know we’re on board.”

“Alright, I’m here already so I’ll get moving and see you in at lunch break, maybe at the canteen?” I asked.

“We can meet there but we’ll sign in the offices where they will have video and stills taken to mark the occasion with the brass from the studio,” Freddy told me.

“Okay, I’ll see you around lunch time Freddy, and thanks again,” I told him.

“I’ll see you then,” he replied and we hung up.

I went into building B and found Cherl to thank her again and to see if she knew what was up next.

“Sugar, you’re hitting home runs every day you’re here from what everyone is saying about you and Aster’s readings yesterday,” Cherl said as she gave me a hug.

“It went well and Freddie got the contract negotiated so I’m happy and ready to go to see if I can act at all,” I told her with a grin.

“You’ll do fine, you’re going to do the scenes in order that you read them yesterday so you’ll know the lines,” she informed me. “You just need to hit your marks and learn how to interact with your co-stars. Just be easy going and apologetic until you’re in the groove and everyone will be patient with you.”

“I’ll definitely take your advice and from others today and for a long time to come,” I said. “So, I gather you know how I need to look for the first scene?”

“Sure do, first one is you in a clean uniform and looking smart and new,” Cherl informed me. “Have a seat and I’ll get your hair styled right and put on just a bit of makeup to set your base look. Then you’ll just get into an officer’s uniform and you can mosey onto the set.”

I did as I was told and she quickly had me looking all spit and polish for the first scene. After getting into my uniform, I was guided to the set by one of the runners and met the other three main actors plus a couple of minor actors and actresses as the other military people. Besides the actors, there were sound people, lighting people, set decorators, assistant directors, Harold the director and a bunch of other people that I didn’t know who they were or what they did.

“Alright Sam, you’re Lieutenant Ryan Mitchell, a newly minted first lieutenant right out the academy joining Captain Paul Stone’s command, played by Trent with his second in command, Senior Lieutenant Bethany Castle, played by Victoria. The Princess, played by Aster will come in and want to talk to the Captain after you’re already in the command and she’ll see you doing some martial arts training with the lower ranks and want to meet you.”

“Okay, I see how the scenes will flow from our reading,” I responded.

“Good, let’s get a few of the simple ones done with the military first and then we’ll get you sparring with several of the extras and then the experienced sergeants and then the Captain.”

The rest of the morning was initial interactions and it only took a few takes to get the simple ones done with the Trent, Victoria and a couple of the men playing the older sergeants.

Next, I got changed into a standard tee shirt and camo pants with combat boots and they had the sergeants run me through a range for marksmanship and then the combat courses to shoot aliens that popped up. After that, they filmed me taking on privates, then corporals and the two sergeants in hand to hand combat, with my martial arts skill (as the lieutenant) overmatching even the experienced sergeants.

We acted out a scene where Victoria declined to go up against me but the Captain stepped in. Trent wasn’t up for a heavy duty martial arts fight so they had his stunt double step in for most of the fight and they would get a few shots of Trent with me with his face in view to make it look believable. The stunt double and I practiced off camera as the script called for us to really go at it hot and heavy with the captain winning at the end with a slightly dirty move to show the new lieutenant that the enemy doesn’t fight fair, ever.

Joe and Vince were there to help us out and we really showed off the new lieutenant’s skill with kicks off of high jumps to avoid the Captain’s attacks and then in close fighting with barrages of punches thrown and blocked and then leg sweeps to take things to the ground. Exercise equipment got broken with missed kicks or punches as the fight went around the entire exercise area. Finally, the Captain was flung against the padded wall in a heap and the Lieutenant walked away. The Captain got up quietly and put me in a choke hold, from which the Lieutenant had to tap out of. We let Trent do that portion of the scene and explain how you always had to finish off the enemy, especially if they were behind you.

That took us to lunch and I was dragged to a contract signing, while still wearing my fighting clothes. There were about ten studio people to shake hands with on top of Harold and Jack, with Freddie my only backup. I barely had time to wolf down a meal in the canteen before I was in the next scene, training the lower ranks on martial arts and range combat courses. This was where the Princess would watch from the second floor balcony. Some of the lower ranks were actually stunt men with non-speaking parts so I just had to show them some moves and how to shoot on the run. They filmed Trent and Victoria looking on from time to time and then another scene with the Princess and her lady companion looking down. Finally, the Princess asked the Captain and Senior Lieutenant who I was while I was fending off two sergeants at a time on the mats.

The final scene was in the cafeteria where everyone was grabbing food from the line and sitting at long tables parallel to the front table where the officers ate. There was some standard conversation between the grunts while the officers wanted to know where I came from. I had to remember several lines as they wanted to grab the whole conversation while filming the men and women horsing around further down their tables. It took about ten takes to get it right, with me sometimes flubbing a line, someone in the background messing up the shot and finally getting it right on take eight with the two last insurance takes.

They called it a wrap for the day with Harold and an assistant director pulling me to the side to show me what they would be shooting tomorrow so I could memorize the lines and practice this evening. They also asked if I would come in on the weekend to do a few scenes that would be mostly stunt work that the other three main actors weren’t in. I agreed and asked what they were so I could practice any lines for those as well. One would be a battle scene at night so I would have to stay late Friday night while the other scenes on the weekend would be close up fighting with Aliens during other fight scenes. They didn’t film everything in sequence so it was hard to tie things all together.

Aster had filmed a couple of her scenes with the other two actors or by herself with her lady companion or her security guard while I was busy but she texted me to come back to her house but pick up some pizza for dinner if I didn’t mind. I replied that I would do so and asked her what she liked on hers before I ordered her a vegetarian small and myself a large meat lovers from a pizzeria along the way. It was half an hour before I pulled up to her driveway and texted her that I was here. She opened the garage door and was waiting with a spare garage door opener when I got out.

“Wow, my very own garage door opener, I’m honoured,” I said with a grin.

“I just don’t want to have to get up every time to let you in,” she retorted as she tossed it to me and grabbed the pizzas while I put the opener in my car.

We sat down at the kitchen table and were soon eating hungerly.

“You did well today, corrected your mistakes quickly and took direction well,” Aster told me. “Harold and the assistant directors were happy which made Jack happy. Trent and Victoria seemed okay and they can be notoriously cranky if the other actors aren’t professional. So, good work.”

“Thanks, I was trying really hard to get things right and concentrate on what everyone wanted,” I replied. “It’s much harder than it appears on screen, that’s for sure.”

“Yes, it’s not just about looking good, but making the interaction look real and not fake,” Aster explained. “So far you’re doing okay but they did the easy scenes first as a new lieutenant would be nervous with his superiors and his subordinates anyway. They threw in some action scenes that you’re already used to as well.”

“Silvia, the assistant director and Harold gave me what will be shot tomorrow so I have to study my lines this evening,” I told her. “They also want me to stay late for the night battle stunts as well as coming in on the weekend for other alien fight stunts so they can catch up while you three aren’t there.”

Aster sighed but nodded, “I was afraid they’d do that but knew they wanted to get caught up. I’ll just have to relax at home or see if some friends can come by to relieve my boredom.”

I rolled my eyes before having another slice of pizza. She grinned at me and we ate without a lot of conversation until we were full. I helped put the leftovers in the fridge and load the dishwasher.

“I don’t have any clean clothes so I should probably either go to my apartment to get some and either come back or stay there for tonight,” I said.

“Have a shower here and I’ll wash both of your outfits and you can go there tomorrow night after your late shooting to sleep and get more to bring here,” she suggested. “No use coming here Friday night when you have to go back in sometime Saturday morning anyway. Come back here when you’re done for the weekend.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. “I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”

“I want you here whenever we’re both not doing other things,” she said as pushed me to the bathroom. “Go get naked and pass out your clothes while I get yesterday’s before getting the washer going.”

“Yes ma’am,” I responded and started taking off my shirt in the hallway.

I quickly had my socks, pants and underwear off just inside the washroom and handed them to her as she looked me up and down.

“I like you naked in my house,” she said in a sultry voice.

“I like being naked with you anywhere,” I told her as I went to pull her close.

“Later, Romeo,” she grinned as she stepped back. “Shower, practice lines and then maybe you get to see me in my birthday suit.”

She pulled the door shut behind her as I gave her a pout. I quickly hopped in the shower and washed off the grit of the day. After I dried off, I found she had left a large bathrobe, luckily in white rather than pink, on the counter. I put it on and left the bathroom to find her ensconced on the couch, with her script in her lap and mine on the coffee table.

We spent the next hour and a half memorizing my lines and practicing them so I knew the context and how to say it with the emotion required. It wasn’t hard work but we were both glad when she declared me ready for tomorrow. We had some fruit salad for dessert and she made sure to put my clothes in the dryer so I had something to wear in the morning.

“I don’t have to go into eleven tomorrow so you can head in early and let me sleep in so I’m not so grumpy when you see me next,” she informed me. “Just make sure the coffee maker is working before you go.”

“Will do,” I agreed as she pulled me to the bedroom.

Aster pulled off my bathrobe and then pulled off her tee shirt while I helped her with her yoga pants before we climbed into bed and made out like we hadn’t seen each other for weeks. It took another two hours until we were physically exhausted and fell asleep with Aster laying on my chest.

Friday morning I showered and put on my washed clothes from two days ago and left Aster a note before heading to the studio. I was early but the Joe and Vince were there and got me going on a simple scene while we waiting for some of the other actors to show up. They had me scaling a three storey rock wall using a rope harness and then rappelling down it in long jumps. They filmed it three times before the other actors needed for my next scenes were ready.

Today was a lot of quick scenes in small rooms, hallways and crew quarters where I had to either walk and talk while others interacted or were just in the scene as extras. All the interaction at the underground base had to be captured as the company went from a group of new recruits to seasoned warriors.

After they got through those, the main actors were brought in and more scenes were filmed in the various rooms and corridors and larger hangers amongst the small aircraft and land vehicles of the near future. Later in the afternoon, we got into some offroad vehicles and took a fire team outside to a back lot that would simulate a flat plain with roads that we could film on as we raced to places, had a running battle with an alien vehicle and then got chased by one, taking fire and some of the team getting injured.

Trent and Victoria and I were all in different vehicles that all got hit and I got a graze on one arm while Trent’s vehicle was rolled. Victoria and I had to pull the survivors out of the burning overturned vehicle while others covered us. It was fun to be involved in shoots like these as we had to fake being shot at and being blasted to the side while carrying Trent’s body double on my back. They called it an afternoon and the main actors went home while I had supper in the canteen before heading back outside to film dusk and then night scenes with a squad of my men and women.

They had trenches ready for us to defend against assaults, another city battle where we moved between buildings as an assault team and then being ambushed with large aliens being dropped from their ships to surround us, again in a city scape. That led to some close combat with my team fighting off a dozen aliens with laser rifles, their swords versus telescoping rods that we carried and then hand to hand under the dark skies. They had flames from the burning buildings lighting the area as I took out alien after alien, saving some of my team before they were overwhelmed. Two of us killed the last alien before he could stab the sergeant laying on the ground. By the time we had the last scene in the can, it was two am and I was exhausted and was driven home to my apartment, leaving my car in the lot. I had a quick shower and crashed, setting an alarm for seven in the morning.

I was still tired on Saturday morning but was getting paid very well so had a quick shower and took an Uber into work. The team was ready and got me into wardrobe and makeup right away and then onto the set without the usual relaxed timing. Vince and Joe were there and quickly got me up to speed on the various stunts they wanted me to do today.

The first one was dropping from a helicopter after we filmed my team and I getting on it before it took off. Once in the air, we hovered over the drop points as my team slid down ropes while we were getting shot at. I was to go out last so I was simulating firing lasers bursts from my rifle at the drones mocked up as alien ships as they flew by, leaning out the door to keep shooting. I was hooked up to a wire harness attached to a bracket just in case something happened and of course something did happen just after the last two stunt men slid down the ropes.

There was a big bang from somewhere above my head and the engine just shut down, stopping the rotors and causing the whole helicopter to dive. First I lost my grip on my gun, then on the handle on the side of the chopper as my momentum pulled me out of the open door. I hoped the harness would catch me but I kept falling as my weight pulled the bracket right out of the chopper’s interior wall. I twisted in midair and snagged one of the ropes but my momentum swung me underneath the falling helicopter rather than away from it. I saw the two stunt guys jump the last ten feet and roll out of the way as I tried unsuccessfully wrap my legs around the rope.

I continued to slide down the rope as it as the copter tilted to the side and knew it was going to drop on my head if I didn’t get out from underneath of it. I pointed my feet to the other side like I was on a swing before I let go of the rope at the last second and arched my body to go as far away from the copter before it smashed down on the ground. I felt it crash down behind my head as I slid like a baseball player out away from the debris until I could stand up like I slid into second base. Turning around, I saw the pilot not moving in the cockpit while flames started shooting out of the motor on the top of the copter.

I rushed in and tried to open the door but the frame was bent from the hard landing. Using my elbow, I smashed the window and then grasped the window frame and tore the door open. I kicked it to the side and reached in to undo the pilot’s harness before lifting him out of the wreckage as smoke filled the cockpit. Running off to the side, I carried him towards a bench and gently laid him down as the medical staff rushed over.

The stunt safety staff ran up with fire extinguishers to battle the blaze but the extinguishers weren’t up to the task and the chopper was soon fully engulfed in flames. Sirens were wailing and the studio fire department were soon there with hoses to put the fire out. An ambulance came for the pilot and whisked him away after putting him on a stretcher while I checked on the two stuntmen who had to jump for it. Luckily, one only had a twisted ankle and the other one a wrenched knee so they got lucky. I finally sat down on bench and drank a full bottle of Gatorade someone handed me and then poured a bottle of water over my heat to cool down. The resulting runoff turned pink and I winced as it stung a cut I didn’t know I had on the top of my head.

Taking stock, I had rips and scratches through my shirt and some of them were bleeding as the debris or whatever cut me as well. I had skinned forearms, a cut in my scalp above my hairline and some rope burns and cuts on my hands. The medical staff finally got to looking me over after taping up the stuntman’s ankle and knee. They had the cut on my head bandaged and had my shirt off while cleaning up the scratches and cuts on my torso when Joe and Vince came over.

“How you doing Sam?” Joe asked.

“I’m okay, how’s the pilot?” I inquired.

“A concussion, maybe some whiplash but they’re worried about his spine and neck so they’re going to take some x rays and keep him overnight at least,” Vince responded. “All of that is better than being caught in there when it went up. I can’t believe you survived that crash let alone rescued the pilot. That was incredible!”

“Got a bit lucky and then knew we didn’t have much time to get him out,” I said with a shrug. “I hope he’s going to be alright; I didn’t have time to worry about his back.”

“No, being alive and not burned was the most important thing,” Joe told me. “Shit, your hands look raw, you got him out with hands like that?”

“Rope burn mostly but the cockpit door wouldn’t open so some of it might be from that,” I mused as I held them palms face up.

One of the medical team washed them with some saline, rinsed them with water and then wrapped them in gauge while I tried not to cry like a little girl.

“You should probably get those looked at by a doctor,” he said. “The rest don’t need stitches but those hands look a bit rough.”

“Alright, let’s get you changed and we’ll get you to driven to the nearest hospital,” Vince said.

I stood up and headed back to the wardrobe and was helped out of my costume and into my clothes. After grabbing my keys, wallet and phone from my locker, I found Joe and Vince with Harold and Jack, along with a few studio execs.

“Sam, I’m glad you’re alright, though I see a bit banged up,” Harold said.

“Just some rope burn and a few cuts, I’ll get them cleaned up and should be good to go on Monday,” I told him.

“Joe and Vince tell us that you pulled the pilot out after you miraculously escaped having the helicopter drop on you,” Jack spoke up. “Great work obviously and thanks for doing that.”

“No problem, just reacting to the situation,” I said with a shrug. “Okay, I’m sure you have lots to do to get figure out what went wrong and probably deal with an official investigation before getting this all cleaned up, so I’m going to head to the hospital to get these looked at and then take the rest of the weekend off if you don’t mind.”

“For sure, just let us know how you are and when you can come back to the set,” Jack quickly agreed.

“Will do,” I replied and walked over to my car.
