The other shoe did indeed drop on Monday morning when I was summoned to the office of the VP of Corporate Security, Mr. Steve Manning, just after nine am up on the twentieth floor. Predicting the worst, I put on my jacket before slipping the couple of personal items from my drawers that I wanted to take with me into my pockets before heading upstairs from the twelfth floor. He had a pretty assistant sitting behind a desk in the outer office who looked up when I entered.

“Yes?” she asked.

“I was summoned,” I told her. “Dylan Forester, IT security.”

“Yes, Mr. Forester, please have a seat and I’ll see if Mr. Manning is ready to see you,” she said as she got up.

She was a tad haughty but pretty enough to pull it off, wearing a sleek dress and, with heels, was probably five-eleven and svelte. I admired her long legs until the door closed behind her.

A minute later, she came out and said, “Mr. Manning will see you now.”

I stood up and walked to the door, thanking her along the way.

“Mr. Forester, come in please and shut the door,” the mid-thirties man said while still sitting down behind his big desk, looking at his monitor like he was busy.

There was another person, a middle-aged woman in a business suit and skirt, sitting in one of the two chairs in front of his desk, though it was pulled off to the side towards the wall. I pulled the door shut and walked to the front of the other chair but didn’t sit.

“Have a seat Mr. Forester,” he said. “This is Mrs. White from Human Resources.”

I nodded to her as I sat down.

“Mr. Forester, it’s come to our attention that you know the Earl of Weathersby and his family and were involved in the incident that happened last month,” he began.

I said nothing as he paused. The two of them looked at each other before he continued.

“Well, it has been determined that we cannot have that type of violence associated with our bank so we’re going to terminate your employment as of now,” Mr. Manning stated.

“And what basis or evidence do you have that I was involved in this incident?” I asked.

“We have the police report stating that you were involved,” Mrs. White answered.

“I’d like to see that report that you’re using as the basis for terminating me without cause,” I said. “Even if I was involved in this incident you’re referring to, that should have no bearing on my employment here. Were there charges filed on the person you say was involved?”

“I don’t know, but that doesn’t matter,” Mr. Manning responded.

“Of course it matters, if nothing illegal was done, then the company would have no reason to terminate me,” I stated. “Do you have the police report?”

He looked over at Mrs. White who reluctantly pulled out a report and handed it to me. I took my time reading the report, only of the first nighttime attack on their London residence. I read it from front to back, including any of the filled out sections with names, dates, times, police and other persons involved. The main pages with descriptions of what was found and witness statements were accurate and my name was mentioned throughout by the various family members statements. My name was listed in the front section but only New York as my residence and no phone number. I had not given a statement.

“Nothing there suggests that was me,” I said. “Even if it was me, nothing suggests anything illegal was done. That person saved women from being assaulted and the whole family and their servants from worse. Why would you think it was me first of all and why would you fire me if it was me for saving those people?”

“The violence that person perpetuated on those people was done by someone we do not want working for our company,” Mrs. White stated.

“So, you have never had a military person working for this company in all the many years it’s been in existence?” I asked. “Many of them have been violent in the service of their country, many times more than what that person did to save those people.”

“That was a different time,” she tried to justify their position.

“I’m sure you still have military personnel that served in the latest Mideast conflicts so I beg to differ,” I rebutted. “I see you’re set on doing this. What paperwork do you have for me besides this police report?”

Mrs. White slid over a letter of termination which had the reason listed along with what they were going to pay in severance, provided I signed a non-disclosure agreement and didn’t fight the termination. It wasn’t generous, only four weeks of pay.

“If you sign the last page, I have a cheque with your severance for you,” she said.

“I won’t be signing anything,” I told her as I stood up. “I look forward to my lawyers tearing apart your arguments in court.”

“Then we have no choice but to have you escorted out of the building and we will send you your belongings to your residence,” she said as she stood up.

“Don’t bother, there isn’t anything I need,” I told them as I folded up the paperwork and slid it into the inside of my jacket. “I wonder what losing all of the Earl’s business will do to your careers?”

I left the office and walked by the two security men in uniforms and headed to the elevators. They had to jog to catch up and just got into the elevator before the doors shut.

“What’s the rush?” one of them asked.

“Didn’t want to stick around and give in to temptation,” I told him.

“Like we were going to let you do anything,” he scoffed.

I looked at him and then at his partner, an older guy who just rolled his eyes.

“He’s new,” the older guy said. “Sorry to see you leave, Dylan.”

“Yeah, not my decision but they’re probably regret it,” I replied. “You take care of that family of yours. I won’t be around to get you free software for that daughter of yours or get rid of the viruses from you visiting questionable websites.”

“Bite me, you know that wasn’t from one of those places,” Larkin retorted.

I grinned at him and turned to his new partner, and commented, “I think he dost protest too much.”

“You know this guy?” then new guy asked Larkin.

“Yeah, he’s in IT security so sort of part of our division but much higher up than us,” he explained. “Even so, he’s helped out a lot of us with our computer issues without asking for a dime or any other favours. Whatever they’re accusing him of doing, he didn’t do it. However, I need this job and Dylan isn’t going to start something with us. I’d be worried if I were them though. So relax and be nice to him or he’ll put you on the ground in no time flat.”

“Him? I doubt that!” he scoffed.

“You get that second black belt yet?” Larkin asked me with a grin.

“Yep, now working on a third in Jujitsu,” I replied. “It’s more about using your opponent’s movement and weight against them instead of offence like my other black belts in karate and Krav Maga.”

The doors opened and I took the lead, walking through the lobby. Just before I left the building, I tossed my badge to Larkin.

“Take care, I’ll see you around,” I said.

“You too Dylan, call if you ever need anything,” Larkin replied.

I nodded and went out the door, pulling my phone out of my pocket. I texted Brian about the termination and then let him know I’d be leaving New York after siccing a law firm on them for wrongful dismissal.

He texted back a few minutes later, saying he was sorry to hear that and to let him know if I needed help with anything. They were still under protection in the same place but it was starting to wear on everyone. No progress had been made in all this time.

I told him I was sorry to hear that as well and told him to let me know if they needed help as well. I told him I would probably go dark for a bit but would be in touch at some point but from another number. I would use our code to let him know it was me.

“Understood, good luck,” was his reply.

“You too,” I responded and then started looking up law firms nearby. One was down the street and had a good reputation so I walked down and found them in another high rise on the seventh floor.

The receptionist found a lawyer that had some time to take a look at my case and I followed her back to her office.

“My name is Mary Dillinger, how can I help you, Mr. Forester?” she asked as we sat down.
