Cynthia reached over and shut off my alarm and then proceeded make my morning a very memorable one. I pulled her to the shower afterwards and made sure she was well taken care of as well. She got dressed, such as it was, and slipped out of her room in her robe after making sure no one was out in the hall. I got dressed and tidied up the bed, the room and the bathroom as Brian was sure to come and want to talk prior to breakfast.

He was at my door at eight-thirty and invited himself in before sitting on the sofa while I took the nearby matching chair.

“Dylan, I wanted to thank you again for saving everyone from those guys last night, it would have ended much worse if you weren’t there,” Brian started.

“I’m just glad I was there to help,” I replied.

“I didn’t know you had those skills, other than playing against you in Call of Duty,” he added. “Where did you learn how to do all of that?”

“Well, at one time I thought I might join one of the police forces or the State or Federal forces like the FBI, so I got some training in firearms and using various combat courses, but I moved on when I wasn’t accepted,” I responded. “I guess it came in handy last night.”

“I’d say,” Brian agreed. “So, my father wants to have a talk with you after breakfast but wanted me to prepare you first.”

“Okay...” I replied warily.

“My last name really isn’t Thistle like I used in the US going to school,” he started. “My father is actually the Earl of Weathersby so MI5 are thinking this is a terrorist act. They will be wanting to talk to you at some point today and are interrogating the two you captured upstairs.”

“Not much to tell them except what we already told them last night,” I responded. “So do you have a title?”

“Usually in correspondence the younger sons have ‘the Honourable’ in front and the daughters have ‘Lady’,” Brian told me. “My oldest brother Henry can be called Earl as well as he will inherit.”

“Well, who would have thought you’d be nobility,” I said with a grin. “You certainly don’t act noble!”

“True, I went to school in the US to escape all that but now that I’m back I’m supposed to grow up and help with the family business,” Brian responded with a shrug. “Enough of that, I just wanted to you to know why things will get hairy for a while, including the press going after our family and you as your name is on the police report. You know we didn’t mention what happened to the ladies so I hope you keep that to yourself please.”

“Of course, no one will hear it from me,” I promised.

“I thought so, just wanted to remind you and I’m sure my father and brothers and maybe my mother might bring it up,” he warned.

“You might want to just tell them we talked and it doesn’t need to be mentioned out loud ever again,” I proposed.

“I’ll do that, but just in case, just ensure them to their face if asked,” Brian said. “Someone will discuss the press and your possible responses and actions when confronted with both the paparazzi and the serious journalists that will try to get your history, your current status and what happened last night. It’s important to get the story straight and be consistent with what the family puts out and what you say. They will try to trip you up and make you angry and get in your face to get a reaction so you have to be prepared for that.”

“Okay, we definitely need to prepare and then hopefully I can hide out until I go back home in a few days,” I stated.

“We can definitely hide you at one of our estates but you’re going to be chased across the pond and harassed in the States whenever you’re out of your apartment or your workplace,” Brian warned. “Most of the time, we fly under the radar, except when there is a big event like my brothers’ weddings, but with this happening, we’re all going to be hounded.”

“No good deed goes unpunished, right?” I responded, shaking my head.

“Sorry old chap, but that’s a pretty true statement in this instance,” he agreed. “However, the family owes you big time, so we’ll assign you someone to handle your press and at least one bodyguard to help keep the vultures away. The powers that be might suggest you stay over here a bit longer, squired away out of sight for at least a couple of weeks to let things die down and then slip you home on a private jet.”

“And my work?” I asked.

I worked in IT security at a large bank in New York so I didn’t want to blow my position there if I could help it.

“We’ll see what my father suggests or can do to help out with that,” Brian answered. “Don’t worry, he has lots of connections in New York and if that job doesn’t work out, I’m sure he will get you another one there or over here right away.”

“Hmmm, I’m not sure I like the sound of that,” I admitted with a frown. “I worked damn hard to get that job and then to move up in the department just to lose it all because of this.”

“I understand Dylan, really I do,” he responded. “I will make sure that everyone knows that and does whatever they can to ensure your job is safe or you get a better one without any prejudice on why you had to leave your current job.”

“We’ll see,” I said with a sigh. “Alright, shall we go eat, I’m starved.”

“We shall,” Brian agreed and stood up.

I made sure my door was locked and we walked down to his parent’s room and knocked. The door was opened by a butler type and he nodded to us and used a hand wave to invite us in. The rest of the family was already sitting down at a long dining room table so we were waved to the two empty chairs at the far end with Cynthia making sure I took the one beside her.

“Now that we’re all here, let’s get started and we’ll discuss things while we’re eating,” the Earl suggested. “James, can you start please?”

“Certainly, my Lord Weathersby,” James the butler replied and moved to another doorway and left the room.

He was soon back with three staff members who wheeled out carts laden with food. Platters of bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, waffles and other items were put on the long table and then all the condiments, syrups and added in fancy carriers that could be spun.

I made sure Cynthia got everything she needed or wanted first before Brian and I filled our plates and added our ketchup, butter, syrup and jams as needed. I asked for apple juice when one of the staff came over with a carafe of coffee in one hand and tea in the other. She nodded and said she would get that for me in a minute.

Everyone was already eating when I looked up to see if it was okay to start.

“You snooze, you lose around here Dylan,” Brian said as he dug in. “I know that my two older brothers would gladly get their second helpings and leave nothing for their younger siblings so Cynthia and I have learned to get started as soon as possible. It also is an explanation why we’re so much leaner than those two.”

Cynthia laughed out loud and her mother grinned at that statement, while Henry and Robert, the two older brothers, just shook their heads but kept eating. I started eating slowly so as not to embarrass myself and then thanked the staff member who brought me an apple juice a couple minutes later.

There was lots of food left, even after most had at least a small second helping, so I grabbed a waffle and put some syrup on it along with a couple more sausages. Ten minutes later we all moved to another room and sat on various couches, loveseats and chairs and then shut the door. Cynthia sat between me and Brian as the only three without a partner.

“Alright, MI5 will be here soon to go over what happened last night, so let’s get the narrative right,” the Earl started. “We were all getting ready to adjourn to the dining room from the front lounge when the terrorists came in and forced use to sit in the dining room and tied up the men, except for Dylan who just arrived and was getting cleaned up upstairs. Mother and Cynthia were brought upstairs by two of the men to change their outfits but before that could happen, Dylan overpowered them one by one and tied them up. Down here, two of the men were telling us what they were going to do to the women and had Rebecca and Anna up out of their chairs when Dylan came in and shot all four men. Do we all agree with that statement? It blurs the timing somewhat and eliminates trauma that the ladies all went through but since Dylan has punished most of the transgressors and the other two have no need to say what they did upstairs, hopefully it will never get outside the family and Dylan. He has promised never to speak of what happened beyond our agreed upon story. Are we all in agreement?”

Everyone nodded or said yes.

“Good, let’s move on,” the Earl continued. “My sons and Dylan freed the staff, eliminating a guard and then Brian and Dylan eliminated two more outside. We then all congregated in the front room to wait for the authorities to arrive. End of story, agreed?”

“Agreed,” everyone stated.

“Alright, I’m sure MI5 will want more detail but only Dylan will be able to provide it as he handled the rescue and the elimination of all of the terrorists,” he said. “Next, I’ll get a report on who they were and what MI5 have found out from the two that Dylan has left alive. I’m sure that they are currently being held without bail or access to a lawyer as they are classified as terrorists but that may change in time. When that does, we’ll be subject to possible further attacks so we’ll be moving to the country estate and MI5 will provide additional security on top of whatever is left of ours. Some of them were eliminated outside and inside the mansion last night.”

There was some discussion about the family’s obligations over the next few week but most could be handled via online apps or postponed.

“Dylan, I’m sure Brian has explained what is going to happen in terms of the press once this gets out,” the Earl said, looking down at me. “The Sunday morning papers didn’t have anything yet but we’re sure someone will leak it sometime today. You better join us at the country estate up north outside of Horncliffe in Northern England near the Scottish border so you’re safe from retribution and from the press.”

“I can join you for a few days but I’m expected back next Monday at work in New York,” I responded.

“You work at JP Morgan/Chase right?” he asked.

“Yes, in IT security,” I responded.

“I have significant investments in JP Morgan here in London so I’ll make sure that your job is safe for however long we need to keep you safe,” the Earl told me. “If you have to, you can work here at their London headquarters or we’ll find you something to do within our enterprises. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of you as if you’re family.”

“I thank you for that but we’ll have to see how things go,” I responded.

“We shall see,” was all he said. “Alright everyone, stay on this floor where it’s safe and we’ll probably travel in a convoy up north this afternoon. Ladies, pack up whatever you brought with you and someone will get us whatever we need that we don’t have once we’re safe. It’s near enough a four hour trip so be ready soon after lunch please. Men, do the same and then come back here and we’ll all sit with MI5 to discuss the attack and next steps.”

Everyone scattered but I helped Cynthia up and she smiled and held my hand as we left the room and the suite.

“Okay, what’s going on with you two?” Brian asked.

“I’m laying claim to Dylan,” Cynthia told him succinctly. “I assume you have no problem with that, brother?”

“Um, no, of course not, but the parental figures might,” he warned her. “I also don’t want you hurting him either, when you get tired of him like all the other boys you fall for.”

“Dylan is a man and I shan’t be getting tired of him, for at least sixty or more years,” she said haughtily. “Mom already knows and she’ll handle father so what else you have?”

He looked at her and then at me.

“He doesn’t know what he’s getting in for, not only for what he did but what is in store for him dating you,” Brian said. “You better explain that to him and before you go public with your new romance. Dylan, it will be worse than what’s already in store for you for foiling the attack so think things through. I have no problem with you dating my sister, I think you’d definitely be a good match for her, but you don’t know what the paparazzi will be like. Keep that in mind before you get in too deep.”

“Understood, and thanks for warning me but also being on board with it,” I told him.

“I didn’t say she would be good for you,” Brian responded with a grin. “You’re in a whole different world dealing with her!”

“Bugger off Brian, you know I’m not that bad,” Cynthia protested. “Go get packed and I’ll help Dylan before he has to meet you back in the suite.”

“Yes, my baby sister,” he said and darted out of the way when she tried to hit him.

“Come on, we don’t have much time,” she said, pulling down the hall when Brian was in his room.

I opened the door to my room with my keycard and she quickly had the little amount of clothes and toiletries I brought with me in a small carryon. I stuffed in my laptop and the chargers and I was all set. Cynthia patted the bed beside her and I joined her with our legs over the side of the bed.

“Brian was being a jerk; I’m only mean and bratty to guys my brothers or parents set me up with, as I rarely like the overbearing twits,” she told me. “I wasn’t planning on liking you but you were nice when you came in and then you go all Special Forces on their asses and made me all weak in my knees. So a part of this is obviously hero worship but then you rocked not only my night but my morning and I’m way past admiration. Unless you turn out to be an unmitigated ass full of himself, you’ve got a very motivated girlfriend and lover, with hints of a longtime relationship or more should you be likewise interested.”

“Oh, I’m definitely interested, last night and this morning was so beyond anything I’ve experienced that I’d be a fool not to see where this might go,” I responded. “Look, I’m not going to want to be out there in public very often and I’m not a cultured gentleman, but you knew that before you joined me so unless you suddenly become the wicked witch of England and expect me to jump at your every command, I think we can at least see if we’re compatible outside the bedroom. I know that we’re definitely compatible inside the bedroom.”

“And the shower,” Cynthia added with a grin. “We’ll have to explore the rest of the rooms in the house and the outbuildings.”

“In the interest of making sure we’re compatible everywhere, I totally agree,” I responded with an answering grin.

She leaned in and gave me a soft kiss while wrapping her arms around my neck.

“Dylan Forester, I’m so very glad you’re in my life,” she said softly.

“Likewise, Cynthia Weathersby, or should I be putting a Lady in front of that?” I asked.

“Mom and I are Lady Weathersby, but you, my dear man, never have to call me anything but Cynthia or lover,” she told me before she moved up onto my lap. “Now, if Brian doesn’t spew his mouth off to my dad and brothers, we may have a day or two before my mom may enlighten my dad. She’s probably hoping that the shine might come off the penny but that’s not going to happen. That’s when the full weight of the Earl of Weathersby will descend on you along with my overbearing older brothers. They’ll be thankful for the rescue but you’re just not marriage material for an Earl’s daughter.”

“And what will happen then?” I asked her.

“You will be sent home and they may even insinuate that your job is in jeopardy if you insist on still seeing me,” was her answer.

“Shall I beat them all up and take you away from them?” I inquired.

“Of course not, we’d have to live on your salary and your small apartment in New York,” she said with a shiver. “No, you’ll have to win them over somehow without alienating them so that you get an even better job over here and we can be together.”

“I’ll have to look at what available in IT security over here or even go into other security work,” I mused.

“You do that and I’ll help on the ride up north,” Cynthia agreed. “I’ll make sure we ride up together.”

“Your parents will probably want you to ride with them,” I warned.

“That’s okay, though it would be better in our own car with Brian so he can help,” she stated. “Alright, I better go pack and sit with the ladies while you get interviewed by MI5.”

She led the way back but dropped off at her room while I was let into her parents’ suite after knocking. I dropped off my bag on a settee by the door which already had a couple bags on it and then followed the butler to the same room we had congregated in after breakfast. Inside, her father and brothers were already sitting down, with a couple extra men in suits taking two of the other chairs.

“Ah, here is the man of the hour, Dylan Forester, my youngest son’s roommate at Columbia University in New York ending a couple years ago when Brian came back and Dylan started working at JP Morgan/Chase Bank in Manhattan in IT security,” the Earl made the introductions. “Dylan, this is Senior Inspector Henderson and Inspector Edwards of MI5, our version of the FBI in the states.”

“Gentlemen,” I said as I shook their hands before sitting down on the only open chair at the end of a sofa.

“Mr. Forester, we have a few questions for you but first we’d like to get your view of what happened last night,” Henderson asked.

I gave them everything that happened to me or that I saw other than how far things had gotten with the ladies. I explained the how, why and what I did after rescuing the mother and daughter, taking out the two guards and then the four in the dining room and then moved on to taking out the rest of them in the staff area and outside.

“What training have you had in firearms and assault?” Edwards inquired.

“I’ve had extensive training on fire arms and combat courses when I was trying to get into the FBI but when I wasn’t accepted, I went into IT security instead,” I explained.

“Why didn’t you try to detain more of the men rather than killing them?” Edwards next asked.

“The two in the front foyer were metres apart and would have seen me immediately as I came down the stairs, thereby creating noise that the men in the dining room would hear,” I told them. “They were obviously scaring the women in the room so I didn’t have time to find another solution. Once those two were taken care of, I looked inside the dining room and again, the only option was surprise to take out the two behind the tied up men, thereby giving me a second to take care of the two behind the women as they had put their guns behind them. Any other option would have left one or two of them taking hostages of the men or women and possibly causing a standoff or loss of life to the family or even me.”

“And in the staff room and outside?” Henderson asked.

“There were too many staff there that would get hurt if that guard got his weapon unshouldered,” I replied. “Outside, we were surprised as we came up to a corner and the man turned the corner with his weapon at the ready. I had mine ready and pointing upwards while his was pointing to the side. I had to shoot him right away or we’d be dead. The second one wasn’t so close but by that time, I didn’t know who else was around and was too far away from him to sneak up on him or take him down without a fight or sound.”

“So you killed nine men and subdued two more without any injuries to you or the family,” Henderson summarized.

“That’s a true statement,” I agreed.

“Are you aware that the terrorists killed four members of the Earl’s security team as easily and quietly as you killed them?” Edwards asked.

“I knew there were losses but not how many or how it was done,” I admitted. “With the sirens coming closer after we took care of the two outside, Brian and I went back inside, I got out of the clothes I borrowed from one of the guys upstairs, and everyone congregated in the front rooms until the police took over.”

“Is there anything else you can add?” Henderson asked.

“Not really, it happened fast and I just went with what I thought was the best actions to get everyone out the situation,” I responded. “They looked professional for the most part but got distracted with what they wanted to do to the ladies so I took advantage of them being distracted. Do you know who they were and what they wanted?”

The two looked over at the Earl who nodded, before Henderson answered, “It looks like they were hired by a business rival from France who lost out on a large deal to the Earl last year. This rival is a billionaire who has hired mercenaries in the past to target his rivals but this time we have a couple of the mercenaries in extreme lockdown so they can’t be gotten to. Interpol and MI6 is now going after him hard so we hope to have him in custody soon.”

“Until then, we’re going up north to our estate that can be secured better than our London house,” the Earl explained. “We’re leaving as soon as we’re done here and the security is ready.”

“Understood Lord Weathersby,” Henderson acknowledged. “A couple more questions and we’ll be finished. “Mr. Forester, why were you here?”

“Brian, my roommate, invited me to come over when he found out I had a week’s vacation coming up,” I explained. “I had planned to stay until next Sunday and we were going to explore the UK and maybe a bit of Europe.”

“And now that the family is on lockdown?” Edwards asked.

“They want me to go up north with them until the situation is resolved, so I’m not sure when I’ll be going back to New York,” I answered with a shrug.

“We’d like you to come down to MI5 headquarters and have a team recreate what happened last night with our modelling software,” Henderson said.

“Why?” I asked. “You have what happened from multiple people and the evidence from the scene. If you want to mock it up, that’s fine but I’ll help via an online session or from the US consulate if you’re not allowing me to go up north.”

“You are a person of interest in a terrorist activity and as such, you can’t accompany the Earl’s family or be allowed to leave the country,” Henderson stated as he stood up. “Dylan Forester, please stand up and turn around.”

“Henderson, what the hell are you doing?” the Earl asked as he stood up. “The man just saved my family and you’re going to arrest him?”

“He’s too good to be just an IT security guy for a bank,” Henderson stated as Edwards also got up.

“He has already explained why he’s so good,” Brian protested. “Would you rather he not have been here and us all killed?”

“We suspect this is all a ploy to get him installed into your family and then do industrial espionage or worse,” Edwards explained.

“No one would kill nine or more of their operatives to insert one person into an Earl’s sphere,” Henry spoke up. “It’s not as if we’d be suddenly bringing him in on our business dealings. You’re reaching Inspectors for what reason I have no clue.”

“Until we dig deeper into Mr. Forester’s background, we are simply being prudent with your family’s and the country’s security,” Henderson stated before turning to me. “Please stand up.”

“I did omit a couple things from my training history,” I said as I stood up. “I’m a black belt in a couple of disciplines.”

I quickly grabbed his wrist, twisted it behind his back and had his handcuffs on him before they knew what happened. When Edwards tried to get at me, I pushed Henderson at him, moved to the side and had him on the ground in another couple of seconds, using his cuffs to restrain him as well.

I searched for their cuff keys and pocketed them before grabbing their IDs out of their suit pockets and their guns. I pulled out my phone and took pictures of their IDs and then sent them to a friend of mine along with a request for information.

“What did you just do, Dylan?” Brian asked as I sat down again.

“I’m just having a buddy check that these two are actually MI5 inspectors because this is certainly fishy on what they’re trying to pull and how inept they were defending themselves,” I responded.

“But if they are really inspectors, you’re going to be in even more trouble, aren’t you?” Henry inquired.
