Monday morning I got the ladies off to their work and then drove to the Five Guys Studio, using my new pass to get through security and a map the guard provided to find the parking lot I was to use. When I checked in at the front lobby, I was told to have a seat while the receptionist called someone. A few minutes later, Warren, the wardrobe guy showed up.
“Hey Sam, good to see you,” he said with a smile. “I told you that you’d get the role.”
“Yes you did and I’m glad we’re going to be working together,” I replied with a smile in return as I stood up.
“Alright, after today, just come back to lot one and come right into my area, or to the stunt area if that’s where you’re scheduled to be,” Warren told me as we walked through the lobby door and into the main building. “That will save a lot of your time and walking through here.”
“Understood, just wanted to check in the first time,” I responded.
“Alright, I’ve made up a couple suits but I want to do some additional measurements and also see if you can get them to rip before I make any more,” he commented along the way.
“That’s probably the right way to go,” I agreed.
Once we got into his area, he handed me the full suit, with shirt, tie, socks and shoes and I took them behind the screen and hung up my slacks and collared shirt before putting on everything. I walked back out and he had me first turn around as he took a few pictures from different angles.
“Alright, let’s get you to do various moves, get your arms out and up so we see how the jacket reacts,” Warren directed as he moved over to a video camera mounted to a tripod and turned it on.
I did several punches, blocks, out in front and then above my head and also below my waist. I then did some simulated take downs using twists of my upper body and even bending to do some leg sweeps. The suit’s material gave much more than I thought it would and I didn’t feel anything rip. I stood back up and he walked around me and then had me flex so my back tensed up, pulling the suit tight. The seam down the middle of the back held until he told me to relax.
“Alright, I think we have a winner,” Warren stated. “I’ll make up a dozen of these, mostly in this size but a couple a bit snugger for the non-action shots to keep you looking slim and dapper. Next, we need a few other clothes when you’re not on duty. Sweats, shorts and tee shirts for working out, swimsuits and some good casual wear. Everything is on this rack so take it in and we’ll check them out one by one.”
It took another half hour to get that done and I left on some sweats when he walked me over to the stunt area where the stunt coordinator Chris Butler and his assistant Jimmy Eddings were waiting.
“Thanks Warren, I’ll see you next week,” I said to the wardrobe guy before he left us. “Chris, Jim, nice to see you again.”
“Hey Sam, we’re glad to be working with you on this one,” Chris replied as we shook hands.
“Likewise,” I replied. “So what’s the plan this week?”
“We’re going to go over all the stunts we have planned with you and then do an initial run through each of them to see how much practice we need and if any changes are required,” Chris responded. “We’ll use the stunt doubles for this week as they may have to do some of the stunts for the actors and celebrity cameos they have lined up. Some of the wrestlers may want to do the stunts themselves but their contracts might not allow them so we’ll have stunt doubles ready for all of them, just in case.”
“Alright, let’s get busy,” I said with a grin.
We moved to a conference room and they brought up storyboards onto the screen from Jimmy’s laptop. They showed me a dozen scenes where I was going to have to protect Sandra from previous boyfriends, various male wrestlers, country and western singers, MMA fighters and celebrities who all wanted to be her new boyfriend. There were also a couple lady wrestlers that either wanted her or were mad at her as well as a mysterious male stalker who was the most dangerous of all. Most were easy takedowns but they got harder as the movie went on. A couple of the wrestlers were also movie stars so it was going to be interesting to see if they were okay with being taken down by a relatively smaller guy.
After the overview, they broke each of them down with detailed descriptions and then move-by-move cards to show what would happen. I made some suggestions as we went through them to take advantage of my martial arts skills, including some new jujitsu takedowns and holds to subdue larger opponents that I had learned.
We broke for lunch and they led me to the commissary where we joined the surprisingly busy line for food. I grabbed a salad and had the chef make a roast beef bun from the roast he had staying warm on a rotating spit over a grill. The seats were all taken so we walked back and ate in the conference room.
“So, you guys been in the business long?” I asked.
“Ten years or so, working my way up from assistant to stunt lead to full stunt coordinator,” Chris replied.
“Four years, mostly assistant but was stunt lead on one movie,” Jimmy added.
“Is there much competition for your jobs?” I inquired.
“Each studio has their own teams and stunt performers but there are freelancers as well,” Jimmy answered. “There are probably fifty coordinators and his/her teams and then a few hundred performers. Reputation and past work in good movies gets you your next job so yes, it’s not easy to keep working all year round. Timing plays a factor as well so if you’re busy with one film, the next one might be hiring and you miss out.”
“Just like actors,” I said.
“Yep,” Chris agreed.
My phone rang and I was it was Freddie so I excused myself and went outside of the room to answer it.
“Hey Freddie, how are you?” I asked.
“Good, how is your first day going?” he responded.
“Very good, got wardrobe all set and now I’m working with the stunt team going over all the stunts for the movie,” I replied. “We’re just having some lunch before we get into running through some of them.”
“That’s good to hear,” he said. “I’m afraid I have some bad news. The producers decided to go with one of their A list stars for the espionage lead. They said to tell you it wasn’t that you wouldn’t be good in the role, they just wanted a more established star in both roles as they both had to carry the film and get the seats filled. I’m sorry Sam, I tried my best to convince them otherwise but we can’t win them all.”
“That is disappointing to hear,” I responded. “I thought I would be great for that role but I guess I need to get these first three films out there to get some cred in the business. Let’s keep up the auditioning for other roles after the Nerd movie finishes in four months.”
“Absolutely,” Freddie agreed. “I’ll start putting it out that you’ll be free in four months and see what I get back from the studios and producers.”
“Good, let’s try to limit the cattle calls if we can,” I told him. “I’m not trying to be arrogant, but those don’t give you much time to wow them.”
“True, but it almost worked for this last one,” he reminded me. “I’ll do my best. Alright, let me know how things are going at least once a week while you’re on set, okay Sam?”
“Will do, thanks Freddie and I’ll talk to you at the end of the week,” I replied before we hung up.
I took a deep breath and then shrugged as it was too much to expect to get all three roles that I auditioned for. I went back in and finished my meal so we could get back to it.
Lance Decker and Nate Shoemaker were waiting for us and we spent the rest of the day working out the first three stunts. We made them look simple or comedic, with one of the wrestlers taking a running start before flying through the air as I stepped back and guided him to crash into a wall and slide down. Obviously, we had the stuntman hit a pad and slide down to the floor to mimic the wrestler.
Another suitor went to grab Sandra’s shoulder but I intercepted his hand, twisted it so he had to go on his tippy toes and then walked him, still on his toes all the way to a big hedge to tip him over into it so he ended with his legs the only thing you could see. I brushed my suit, pulled my sleeves down and then straightened my tie as I walked back to stand behind Sandra’s stand-in.
The third stunt was kicking the back of a tall wrestler’s knee just enough to get the leg to buckle so he landed on his knees so I could put him into a quick sleeper hold and lay him down on the sidewalk before I walked back to get in my usual position behind Sandra while she was still chatting on her phone.
We called it a day after making sure we were ready to film all three. I got home to find only Abby and Aster there.
“Hello ladies, how were your days?” I inquired after I gave them both a hug and a kiss.
“Tiring, there was a multi-vehicle accident with ten people coming in hot right after lunch, so I was swamped in ER,” Abby informed us.
“After hearing that, my day was much easier, just doing a few scenes, but having to redo one of them twelve times before my co-star got it right,” Aster went next. “How about you?”
“Went through wardrobe in the morning and then we reviewed all the stunts,” I responded. “After lunch we went through the first three stunts with stuntmen filling in for the various actors, athletes, singers and wrestlers who will have cameos in the film. Those went well. Oh, Freddie called and I didn’t get the espionage role; I guess they wanted an A-lister to get more people in the seats.”
“Sorry to hear that,” Aster commiserated. “I know you really wanted that role.”
“Yeah, but two out of three ain’t bad, as the song goes,” I responded with a shrug. “Freddie will keep looking for the next role for four months from now.”
We all helped with dinner and the ladies mentioned that Trisha would only come over on the weekend unless we all just had to see her or she really needed to see us. I was fine with it as I needed the rest from trying to satisfy all three very amorous ladies at the same time for the last three nights.
The rest of the week was more practicing the various stunts until we all thought we had them in good shape. A couple had to be changed up a bit or extra protection needed for the stunt men or women involved, including myself. Falling down on pavement or cement was not good for the skin, let alone the muscles and bones underneath.
On Saturday, Aster and I had to go back to BTM studios and the Invasion set to do some dialogue touch-ups and redo one acting scene where they couldn’t get a video monitor captured in a reflection out of the video without erasing parts of Aster and myself. We got in costume and redid the scene without any issues and the studio people thanked us for coming in.
Trisha and Abby were already enjoying themselves when we got back and Aster slipped in to join them while I took a nap on the couch in the living room. I was woken up for supper and then dragged to the bedroom to be used and abused by all three. I would like to say that my stamina overcame their wants but I fell asleep by eleven and they were still going at one when I was woken up by Trisha shrieking out another orgasm beside me.
Sunday the ladies were all in good moods as we ate a nice brunch that we all helped make. They decided to go clothes shopping and invited me along but I passed as I didn’t want to be their porter for the afternoon. They left after getting ready, leaving me to continue work on the robots. The designs were more or less complete so I ordered some of the components online and cleared some space in the basement to work on the actual builds. I had to remember to discuss it with the producers and director of the nerd movie to ensure they didn’t start building them somewhere else.
I helped the ladies carry in all their packages but drew the line on getting them washed and put away. I started up the barbeque and we had kabobs with various meats and vegetables along with rice and salad for dinner. Trisha went back to her apartment and we went to bed early to rest up for the early start the next morning.
Monday morning was the actual first day with the full crew on set. We all met in a big conference room with all the other actors and actresses that had a role with dialogue in the film, except for the cameos. Everyone actually showed up on time and checked their egos at the door so we got rolling with the script reading right away. We all got new numbered scripts with the changes marked in bold.
There was coffee and other drinks, donuts, muffins and other pastries on a table along the wall for people to munch on while we went through the script. Ten minute breaks were called every hour to allow people to hit the washroom, get a drink and check their messages. Lunch was brought in and we worked while eating as the filming schedule was tight on this film. Everyone stayed late to get through all the major scenes with lots of dialogue before we broke up after six in the evening.
Filming started bright and early on Tuesday and Sandra, as the focus of the movie, was in most scenes, making her the critical linchpin of the schedule. One person’s job was just to keep her on time to each set, whether she was in her trailer, on another set or having lunch. As soon as she arrived on the lot, the woman was beside her with that day’s schedule. The rest of us had to be fit into her schedule.
I had a lot of scenes with her but only a few of them had lines as I was the silent bodyguard for a lot of them, just looking around if we were out and about or just standing behind her if she was in a meeting. We filmed our initial meeting in a conference room and then another scene where we walked around the house to review the security. After that, I was in shots where I was hanging cameras in various rooms in her house while Sandra was on the phone or working out.
Once we had all the initial scenes done at the end of the first week, my stunt work was scheduled in drips and drabs over the next four weeks, depending on when the cameo actors, wrestlers and singers could make it in. I still had a bunch more scenes with Sandra, just standing or walking in the background, so I had to be in every day and just wait to be called.
When I had some free time, I called Freddie and explained what I wanted to do with my robot designs for the Nerd and the Lady movie. Of course he wanted his percentage so he said he would call and set up a meeting with the technical people for the movie on Saturday.
I spent my evenings building one of the robot toys with the components and material I had ordered. It wouldn’t be pretty but could function enough for them to get an idea on what it could do as the child’s toy. I animated my designs for both that one and the larger, home use robot that I could build to show what my character could make.
Saturday morning I met the team at Sutherland Studios and was surprised that Diana, the director of the film, was waiting for me in the lobby.
“Good morning Diana, I wasn’t expecting you to be here,” I greeted her as I shook her hand while holding a box in the other.
“I wanted to see what you came up with to see if it matched what I was imagining in my head,” she replied. “I was going to farm it out but if you have something that works and looks like what we want, then we can go with your idea. That way you can be familiar with it from the get-go and be able to control it.”
“That’s what I thought as well,” I agreed as she walked be to a conference room where a couple guys were waiting.
“Sam, this is Brett and Chin, from our technical department here at the studio,” Diana made the introductions. “Guys, this is Sam Rollins, the lead in the movie. He’s also a robot designer, programmer and controller. He did all the robots for the Invasion movie so he knows what he’s doing.”
“Hi Sam,” Brett said. “I hear they were something special so we’re happy to see what you have in mind.”
“Alright, let me get my laptop out and my initial prototypes,” I said, pulling them out and putting them on the table. “Don’t mind the rough look of them. I just wanted to get something in front of you before you went too far on your own concepts. I have full designs in my presentation to show the final products.”
All three looked over the toy while I connected to the big monitor and brought up my presentation.
“Okay, like we said in the script, I went with a track on a swivel for the locomotion of the robot,” I started, showing a wireframe of the frame. “The original design could be shown as bipedal from my college work with the robot having the ability to walk and then I can convert it to the track if you’re doing a montage of me building the toy. The knees can bend, so can the waist, which can also swivel 360 degrees. The arms have shoulders that can rotate and lift the biceps, elbows that can bend, wrists that can bend and four fused fingers with an opposing thumb, all that can open and close.”
I moved the slides to show each feature.
“The head can rotate 360 degrees as well as look up and down,” I continued. “The eyes act as sensors to see where the robot is going and to help with picking up objects. The mouth can open and close when the robot is talking; the speaker would be inside the mouth. Microphones instead of ears would pick up simple commands. Everything is controlled by the computer in the body of the robot and it will either act via it’s programming to respond to a command or can be remotely controlled during filming.”
I showed them an animated video of the 3D model would be able to do.
“Alright, so that’s the framework of the model, here is what I propose we make the outside look like,” I said, bringing up the fully rendered model.
“Wow, that looks so cool,” Chin said.
I moved the view to go all around the model.
“Here is the video fully rendered,” I showed them the final version.
“That’s better than what I ever thought it would be,” Diana said. “Can you make it to look like that?”
I pulled the prototype back to me and took off a few outer skins.
“The frame is seventy percent done,” I told her before activating the robot.
I moved it around just like the first video.
“It moves around like the concept already, I just need some more components to finish off the frame and about a week to finalize it once they come in,” I responded. “Next, I’ll work with some specialized shops to make the exterior once we’re in agreement on the appearance. After that, it will need some extra programming to finalize the controls. I figure it will be ready in about a month.”
“Excellent, what do you need from us?” Diana asked.
“A contract or purchase order or something to get compensated for the components and time I’ve put into this and extra to finish it and then build the second robot that you probably want to show at some point when I move to the new company or at least to show to Angela in the movie.”
“Okay, get a cost together for all of that and give it to Freddie and we’ll work something out with him,” Diana told me. “We’ve got nothing like this and would have to contract it out anyway so it might as well be you.”
“Good news, I’ll work it up and get to him over the weekend and he’ll have it to you on Monday,” I responded as I packed up.
I shook the guys hands before Diana walked me back out to the lobby and wished me a good weekend. I did the same and drove to the supermarket and did the shopping from the list the ladies made up before heading home. After putting the groceries away we had lunch and then relaxed before we decided to go out to dinner and then to a party that the two movie stars each had been invited to separately. Unfortunately, Abby was called into work for a twelve hour midnight shift at the hospital so she couldn’t come with us. She went to her apartment to rest up and get changed before heading into her shift.
The ladies insisted on dressing up so I had to wear a suit and tie as well. They made reservations at one of the premier restaurants in Beverly Hills, with Aster using her star power to get us a table for three.
I drove Aster’s nicer SUV to the restaurant at six and used the valet service to park the car. Aster held onto my hand as we braved the paparazzi and their bright flashes and incessant shouting all the way to the front door before the doorman opened them up and let us inside. She guided me past the line waiting for a table and went right up to the hostess station, where several pretty ladies and one older man were dealing with an irate man. The host looked up and excused himself from the conversation, passing it to one of the women before moving over to meet us.
“Miss Sundin, Miss Macron and Mr. Rollins, we are happy that you have chosen to dine with us at the Belcourt this evening,” the man said with a smile. “My name is Harold and if there is anything you need, I’ll be happy to arrange for it. Your table is ready if you’d like to follow me.”
“Thank you Harold,” I replied, shaking his hand with a hundred in my palm to ensure good service.
“Right this way,” he said with a bow and I let the ladies go first behind him.
I recognized a lot of the clientele as actors, actresses and famous directors and producers. They probably wouldn’t know me from Adam but Aster and Trisha stopped at a couple of the tables along the way to say hello and get hugs and kisses. I didn’t push to get introduced as I stood behind them while they spent a minute each at three different tables before we finally sat down.
“Sorry Harold, the ladies have many friends obviously,” I apologized.
“Not a problem, Mr. Rollins, it was expected,” he said with a smile. “Victoria will be you main server this evening but I will be around to ensure you get the best service you deserve.”
“Thank you Harold, it’s much appreciated,” I replied before he left.
“You seem to be in Harold’s good graces,” Aster said with a grin. “He’s always passed me on to one of his staff to seat.”
“A nice tip goes a long way, and it pays to be polite and respectful,” I explained with a shrug. “You two are the popular ones from what I saw on our walk to the table.”
“I don’t go out much but it’s nice to see some of the people I’ve worked with before,” Aster said. “I’d would have worried if it only took a few seconds to get to the table as it’s a good barometer of how people in the business feel about you. I’m not talking about my ego but more about their opinion about us and being able to work with them again in the future.”
“Yes, the last time I was still just a teen star and no one stopped me along the way,” Trisha added. “It was nice to say hi to some of the people I’ve only seen in the movies or from a distance at the studio.”
The pretty Victoria came over and welcomed us before taking our drink order and then brought the drinks along with bread and butter while we perused the menus. The ladies decided on different things, chicken with pasta for Aster and fish with rice for Trisha, while I ordered a Porterhouse steak with a baked potato. We also ordered some shrimp cocktails to share as an appetizer. Once Victoria left us in peace for a few minutes, we had a quiet toast before looking around the restaurant.
“So, who is hosting the party?” I asked.
“Bob and Rachel Zigler, very popular producers of movies for the past twenty years,” Aster responded. “They produced two of my earlier films so I get invited to all of their parties but rarely go. They know I usually don’t go to many, especially when I’m in the midst of a film.”
“So why are we going then?” I asked.
“Trisha wanted to go as she was invited separately and we didn’t want her to go alone to one of these,” she answered. “Bob and Rachel’s parties can get a bit wild so a single girl can get set upon by the powerful men that attend these things. With all of us watching and being a group, everyone should be okay. Besides, I think it will be good for your career to meet some of the people who attend the party.”
“Oh?” I inquired.
“Make a good impression with these people and you’ll be busy for years,” she responded. “Just be yourself, respectful and cheerful without boasting or being a fanboy and everyone will like you like we do.”
“I’ll do my best,” I replied before offering everyone a bun.
Our shrimp came out and then our salads and we took our time to enjoy each portion of the meal while talking about our week. From time to time, friends of one of the ladies came over, mostly women but sometimes men, to say hi or to see if either was available. They talked for a bit with their friends but sent the men away quickly. I didn’t even have to stand up to get them to leave.
The main course arrived and everything was delicious. The girls nibbled on their meal but I ate with gusto, while still taking my time and using the proper etiquette. We skipped dessert as there would probably be finger foods and a dessert table later in the evening at the party.
I signed for the meal, leaving a very generous tip and then thanked Harold for the great service when we left. I had a fifty ready to hand to the valet when he brought the SUV up to the front of the restaurant and I helped each lady into their seat before getting into the driver’s seat. Aster pointed me in the right direction and it was a fifteen minute drive to the mansion overlooking the city on one the most exclusive roads in the area.
Our names were checked off at the gate and we followed the other cars up the paved drive to the front of the three storey multi-winged grey bricked mansion and again had a valet park our car when we finally reached front of the line. There was an assistant checking off attendees inside the front door and she pointed the way to the host couple in the very large room off the large lobby. There were stairs up to the second floor and balconies on either side of the stairway were filled with people looking down at the new arrivals while talking amongst themselves.
We let Aster guide us to the couple, smiling and saying hi to people she knew. If she wasn’t already considered an A-list star, she was certainly getting close to that status. The man was maybe five foot ten tall and hid a paunch with a well tailored suit while the woman was a couple inches taller than him in heels. She was still a beautiful brunette with long legs and a svelte body shown off in a silver dress with a short hemline and spaghetti straps to show off her toned arms and firm breasts.
“Aster Sundin, you finally came to one of our parties! Welcome!” Rachel said with a big smile as she moved to hug Aster. “You’ll looking beautiful as ever and who is this handsome man you’re with?”
“Hello Rachel, thanks for having us,” Aster replied. “You’re looking gorgeous as well. This is my boyfriend, Sam Rollins. We came with Trisha Macron, who you also invited.”
“Welcome to our home everyone,” Rachel said, giving everyone a smile before she tugged on her husband’s arm as he was talking to someone off to the side.
“Yes Dear?” he asked with a smile.
“Bob darling, Aster is here with her boyfriend Sam Rollins and Trisha Macron,” Rachel told him.
“Hello everyone,” Bob said before turning to the couple he was talking to. “I’ll find you later and we can continue this conversation, okay?”
They nodded and smiled but I could tell the man was a bit perturbed. Bob turned back to us and held out his arms to Aster.
“Aster, my adopted daughter, you’re looking gorgeous and doing so well,” he said as they hugged. “Why haven’t I been introduced to your new boyfriend so I can make sure he knows he has to treat you right or answer to me?”
“Because you’d try to intimidate him and after falling out of a helicopter and rescuing the pilot, he’s not easily intimidated and I didn’t want you to feel slighted,” she told him with a grin. “Bob, this is Sam, Sam, this is Bob.”
“Nice to meet you Sir,” I said as we shook hands.
“Bob is fine until you do something to warrant a more extreme measure,” he replied. “That was good work rescuing the pilot. I hear good things about the rest of the film, not only on your acting and stunt work but that the robots are the leading edge.”
“Thanks, but it was a team on the robots and the rescue was just being in the right place at the right time,” I replied with a shrug.
“I like the modesty, most people in this town would use that to promote themselves,” he noted.
“The video is everywhere already, no need to point it out any further,” I said. “I’m too busy with new things to bring it up.”
He looked back at Aster and said, “I like him. He’s down to earth and not full of himself.”
He and his wife looked at the three of us before he continued.
“All three of you have new roles and are busy for the next four months or so, correct?” he asked.
Aster answered, “I’m filming now for the next eight to ten weeks, Sam for six weeks and then Trisha and Sam star in the same movie for the eight weeks after that one finishes. As far as I know, we’re all free in four months, for now.”
