Wednesday morning the girls were grumpy as they got up with barely enough time to make it to work. I had a nice breakfast, talked things over with Freddie before driving to Five Guys Studios for the Bodyguard audition. I was wearing my nice black suit, with sun glasses in the inside suit pocket just in case. I brought along a gym bag with several changes of clothes, including the snug short sleeved shirt, shorts, a tee and sweat pants just in case they wanted to film some action scenes. The script was tucked inside as well. It took a bit to find the right room in their sprawling main building, but finally I found it and checked in with the lady waiting outside. There was no one waiting and she brought me right in, even though I was fifteen minutes early.

The conference room she led me in was relatively small, with a marble circular table with six leather office chairs spaced out around it. Three men and two women were in the seats with one empty, assumably for me. One of the women was the star of the movie, Sandra Sullivan, or her stage name Sandra Star. They were all in conversations with each other and didn’t stop when we came in.

My guide coughed and then announced in a slightly louder than normal voice, “Sam Rollins is here for his audition.”

“Thanks,” I said to her and she smiled at me before heading back out to her post, shutting the door behind her.

The team stopped their conversations and they turned towards me.

“Hello Sam, I’m Paul Simmons, the executive producer of this film, which we’re tentatively calling it ‘The Rise to the Top’.”

“Hello everyone, thanks for inviting me to audition for your film,” I replied. “I think the script was great and I’m really interested in the role.”

“And we’re definitely interested in seeing what you can do in the role,” another man spoke up. “I’m Henry, a producer and this is Tom, the director. Helen is a co-producer and Sandra is the star of the movie.”

“It’s nice to meet you all,” I said with a smile.

“Have a seat and we’ll begin,” Tom said, waving to the empty chair.

I had a seat and put the bag down on the floor beside me.

“Alright, we’ve all seen the clip of the helicopter crash and rescue of the pilot so we know you’re fit and can handle serious stunt work,” Tom continued. “We’ve heard good things about the movie Invasion, you just finished, not only about the stunts but about your supporting acting. What we need is a sense of how you see the role and then we can get you and Sandra to do some lines together before we move on to seeing you in action. Does that sound alright to you?”

“That sounds perfect,” I replied. “I’ve read the script a couple of times and I have an opinion about how the role is meant to be portrayed but I can certainly see it going in a few ways. I’m open to playing it anyway you want, so don’t think I’m focussed on how I think it should be played.”

“Understood,” Tom acknowledged.

“Okay, it seems to me that the bodyguard is meant to be played as a serious, no nonsense bodyguard who has been protecting high level government officials and then A list stars before taking this assignment,” I started. “That’s why I wore this suit. He doesn’t always have to wear a suit but he needs to be professional. He’s the odd ball to everyone else in the movie as all the hoopla and stars come in and out, he is just in the background, making sure Sandra is safe. I think that the comedy with this role is having him throw around, take down or otherwise remove all Sandra’s suitors or stalkers while being relatively smaller than the average wrestler. My various martial arts black belts will come in handy when I disable or use their weight and momentum against the bigger stars and then simply straighten out my tie, put my sunglasses back on and then take up my position beside or slightly behind her.”

“That’s an interesting take on it,” Helen stated.

“I thought so,” I replied. “You could go in so many ways with it. Show me in the background taking out someone while Sandra is on TV or signing autographs or having me take on increasingly larger men and women with the same competence and brevity of effort. Or you can go in the opposite direction and make each new scene more difficult, and the bodyguard looking worse for wear as the opponents are bigger and better. He’d be less serious and reacting with a what’s next, weary attitude. I see either as being effective as a secondary role to add some comedic action without taking away from the main focus of Sandra.”

Everyone looked at each other and then began talking about the two ways I suggested. I listened in and it was interesting to see how they discussed the pros and cons. Sandra was relatively quiet but listened in and interjected her view a couple of times. In the end they couldn’t come up with a consensus.

“You have some great ideas Sam, and we’ll get with the screenwriters to get their viewpoint but for now, how about you portray as the serious bodyguard and play it that way throughout the film, and the comedy will come from playing it straight and you throwing around the bigger, louder men and women and then going back to form?” Tom proposed.

“Alright, I can definitely do that,” I agreed. “Do you have some lines you’d like me to read? I brought a change of clothes in case you want to see some physical interaction as well.”

“Certainly, how about Sandra and I accompany you to a small sound stage and we can record the audition and then we can get you on a set with a couple stunt men to see how you do in a physical setting?” he suggested.

I grabbed my bag and said as I stood up, “It was nice to meet everyone, hopefully we’ll meet up again after this to discuss the role further.”

They nodded and smiled before I followed Tom and Sandra out of the room. Sandra was close to six feet tall and probably one-sixty to one-eighty in weight, but I was never good at judging a woman’s weight, especially one who had a very muscular body.

“So, have you watched much wrestling?” Sandra asked in a pleasant voice.

“Sorry, I haven’t actually,” I apologized.

“No need to apologize, I know it’s not to everyone’s taste,” she responded with a grin. “It will probably be better that way for your role so you have no preconceptions and can act stoic when all the wrestling celebrities show up.”

“True,” I agreed.

Tom led us to a small sound room and we sat down on a table with a mike on the table between us. He handed us a sheet of lines and we quickly read them and then practiced our first meeting.

“Miss Starr, I’m Donavan Stone, here about the bodyguard position,” I said as I pulled my sunglasses off my face and tucked them inside my suit jacket.

“Yes, Mr. Stone, please have a seat,” she replied. “You come highly recommended by people I trust. Can you give me a quick rundown of who’ve you protected and how you would see your role with me?”

“Certainly, I’ve had a few years protecting high level government officials and then transitioned to the private sector, with several movie and music star clients in California, New York and in Nashville,” I responded. “I’m called in on emergencies when there is a credible threat against a client or their families but I’ve also been just hired to analyse the security and/or provide normal protection both out in public or at their residence.”

“Good, that was how it was explained to me as well,” Sandra said. “In this case we need both from you. I’ve been getting unwanted proposals to be my boyfriend, lover or husband by men from all walks of life, including other wrestlers, music and film stars and other well-known men, and even some women. I need someone to ensure my house is secure, as they try to get at me there first. After that, I need protection every time I go out, whether it’s shopping, to a restaurant or just out for an outing at the beach, as well as at all my promotional and wrestling events.”

“I’m sure I can handle all of that, though we might need more than just me to cover everything,” I read off the page.

“Oh, you can handle getting everyone and everything you need, right?” she asked. “The house has a security system, but we might need more things added.”

“Yes, I can recommend a total solution for your house and the perimeter,” I told her.

“Good, let’s take a trip to my house and you can reconnoiter, I think the term is, the place, and give me a recommendation with the costs associated,” Sandra said.

“Certainly Miss Starr,” I agreed and we were done with that page.

Tom came in from the booth and said, “That sounded great, professional like we wanted the relationship to start off. What did you think Sandra?”

“Yes, I know we were reading but we really didn’t need the page and the conversation seemed to flow without any awkward pauses,” Sandra answered. “Sam comes across very stoic and it will be easy to keep it professional when we’re acting. He fits the role I envisioned to a T.”

“Good, and you Sam?” he turned and asked.

“I think it went well and it should be easy to keep to the role that we’re all agreeing to,” I replied. “I think that will add something to the movie when everything else is going off the rails. I know I’d find it hilarious to see a guy dealing with all the loonies while wearing a suit and just go back to form after each episode. I think you better make sure the cameras are always rolling as I think you’re going to have a hell of a blooper track.”

“God, you’re right,” Sandra said with a laugh. “We’ll have to get you grinning or laughing when off camera or a stunt going wrong. Hell, we could get you being thrown around a room by some seven footer and then take him down and still get up and straighten your suit, even if it’s ripped to shreds. There is so much physical comedy that could come from this.”

“You’re both right, this role could be the one to really turn the movie to a hit if it’s done right,” Tom agreed. “Okay, we have chemistry and good dialogue between the two of you. Now we have to see if Sam has the chops to do the physical portion of the role. Let’s to get you into one of the suits that wardrobe has come up with and we’ll see how you work with our stuntmen.”

“Sounds good,” I replied, standing up.

He led us through some halls and then out the back to another building, labelled with a big One. Once inside, I was handed off to a wardrobe person and the other two moved on to the set.

“Hi, I’m Warren, I’m the wardrobe guy for the movie,” a mid-thirties guy said. “You’re trying out for the bodyguard role correct?”

“Nice to meet you Warren, I’m Sam and yes, I’m going to be doing some action scenes with the stuntmen for the bodyguard role,” I replied. “I hear you have a suit for me to wear, similar but different?”

“Yes, we wanted the professional look for most or all of the action scenes but we need to ensure that it won’t rip or tear off at the first bit of action,” Warren explained. “We’ve made up a couple of suits but we weren’t sure of the sizes. One may be close but it’s just for a screen test and we’ll tailor them to your size and build if you get the role.”

“Alright, let me get changed and you can monitor the wear and tear of it while we do the stunts,” I responded.

He found the one he thought would fit, including a shirt and some socks and shoes. I quickly changed and he straightened some things out and took some notes and then quickly took a few measurements before he walked me to the set. Tom and Sandra met me and brought me to a small group of people waiting on the set.

“Sam Rollins, this is Chris Butler, our stunt coordinator, his assistant Jim Eddings, and our two stuntmen, Lance Decker and Nate Shoemaker,” Tom made the introductions.

“Nice to meet you all,” I said, shaking hands.

Chris spoke up, “We were all impressed with your chopper stunt and we hear good things about all your work on the Invasion set.”

“Thanks, but the chopper scene started as a stunt and went to a crash and rescue way too soon,” I told them.

“Really, that wasn’t the least bit staged?” his assistant Jim asked, not sold.

“We were all supposed to repel down the lines, including me in that scene,” I told him. “The engine seized up, my harness broke off from the copter and I took a dive out and over the side. Nothing of that was scripted or planned.”

“Then even more impressive you’re still alive,” Lance spoke up and clapped my shoulder.

“Tell me about it,” I replied wryly. “So, what do we have planned for today?”

Chris answered that, “We’ll work a fight scene, or more of a throw Lance out of the room scene first and then a different scene with you taking down Nate here.”

Lance was a couple inches and fifty pounds larger than I was but Nate was probably six-ten and well over three hundred pounds.

“Alright, we’re keeping this a rehearsed stunt, right guys, no picking up Sam and throwing him across the floor or holding him above your heads?” I asked with a grin.

They both chuckled and just nodded.

“Good, we’re not here to get blood all over this suit of Warren’s,” I said. “Shall we coordinate for a bit before trying it out?”

The five of them talked things over before we practiced every move on the large mats. I showed them some of the martial arts moves at quarter speed so they knew what was coming and then we sped it up.

“Alright, full speed,” Jim shouted.

Lance came at me with a swing that I ducked under and tripped him up to sprawl onto his stomach. He got up quick and bull rushed, trying to get his arms around me. I swiveled to the side, grabbed his arm while flipping him over my hip and riding him down as he landed on his back. I simulated hitting him in the solar plexus and he lay there gasping for air while I rolled back up to my feet, straightened out my sleeves and tie while walking away.

“And cut,” Jim shouted and I turned around and helped Lance up.

“Good work, Lance,” I said as he got to his feet.

“Thanks, good takedown Sam,” he replied. “You actually know this stuff.”

“I’ve got two black belts and working on a third,” I told him.

“Ha, that will surprise some of them that will want to put you in your place,” he responded with a grin. “Let’s leave it as a surprise. Some of the wrestlers have a bit of roid rage from time to time so always be prepared.”

“Understood and thanks,” I replied.

“Okay, let’s have Nate give it a go,” Chris suggested next. “You two can swing at each other a few times before Nate gets a hand on you. You then use a move to bend his wrist back and take him down. He gets loose and you have to jump up and kick him in the side of the head to put him out, with Nate falling down like a tree.”

“Sure, let’s practise it a couple times so I don’t take it too far,” I said as Nate and I moved to the middle of the mats.

We practiced a few punches that we set up blocks for or avoided. After a blocked punch, Nate grabbed my suit about chest high and then I used a jujitsu move to grab his thumb and twist his hand back and rolled his arm with mine to have him have to follow his arm down or have his wrist broken. Obviously, we practiced so that he knew how to roll and fall down with the move rather than stubbornly stay up and have his wrist broken. After we were comfortable with that move, we moved on to him getting up and charging at me. I had to jump up high and then swing my leg across my body to fake hitting him in the side of the head. We practiced the timing on that and when I had to start my jump and swing so that it came close but didn’t actually impact him. With him being six -ten, I had to really jump to get anywhere close to his head height.

We got the timing down at half speed but then went three quarters, which meant I had to jump a bit earlier when he was a bit farther away. That took a few tries and then we went full speed with me jumping too early and then almost too late, but Nate was ready and ducked underneath and then avoided crashing into me.

We finally got the rhythm right and were on the right speed and spots and Nate’s fall was epic as he crashed to the mat with no reaction to protect himself. The mats were good though and he wasn’t hurt.
