“As each minute passes, one grows a step closer to the battle that lies ahead. The warrior’s heart beats faster, his adrenaline surges, his training, his experience are brought to the ultimate test. For some warriors, the actual struggle in combat is easier than before and after its fury. Fear and apprehension are powerful foes shaking that warrior before it ever begins, where only experience dampens their blow. The battles can become so short, yet the hard part is the aftermath and having to pick up the pieces of the fallen allies and enemies alike that lie strewn over the battlefield. In the end, the warrior must anticipate all of it to understand what it’s like to truly fight and win a war...,” Shira, 2347 AD.

Eleven hours would pass...

The darkness of space, the stars lay all around us. The spectrum of nothingness lies apparent.

However, a slight shift in direction brings a familiar planet into view. It is a gas giant, consisting of a greenish-blue color. Its most notable feature is the small ring that travels along its equatorial plane, but in the appearance of a vertical axis motion, a contradiction to the many other gas giants out there. Unlike the many planets, this one is almost spinning on its side, its north pole pointed in the direction of the sun.

Uranus is a curious world in the Sol System, one that is often overshadowed by the glamour of Jupiter and Saturn. It is unknown what exactly caused the world to behave in such a fashion, but the mystery only deepens further as we approach it. Its hydrogen and helium atmosphere disguises the fact that it often rivals Neptune as the coldest planet in the Sol System, being even colder at times than its dark blue neighbor, regardless of whether Uranus is closer to the sun.

Upon the quick approach to this world, the numerous moons come into view. Almost 30 orbit it, also traveling along the equatorial plane of the planet. Uranus is desperate to gather its attention, purposely ensuring that Earth can see every moon that the planet has without hindrance.

With an almost 90-degree shift in view, Uranus and its moons are within easier viewership, the sun pointed directly above, almost as if God was casting his rays over the planet that defied it all.

We close in on a single moon, covered in a classical pattern of craters of gray ice and rock. The great Oberon, the 2nd largest moon of Uranus, named after the king of the fairies, shares an incredible secret when we get closer.

Upon reaching within close orbit of the moon, a series of warships comes into view. A single UHN battleship and patrol cruiser could be seen guarding something more massive in size.

It is the UHN Iridum, the great dreadnought. The cylindrical profile easily dwarfs the battleship in comparison, being almost twice its size. However, there are a set of notable events taking place. The Iridium is not under its own power and cannot be seen completely. A shuttle is latched onto the top bow section, using some sort of mechanical ligament to add a series of special modifications. Tow cables keep the ship anchored to a single tug to help ensure the dreadnought doesn’t wander off or get caught in a decaying orbit with Oberon. Meanwhile, a large boxy cylindrical freighter that is ¾ the size of the dreadnought remains docked with the Iridium’s starboard side. On the other side is a smaller box transport.

However, the Iridium remains difficult to see. The centripetal box ring is not moving. None of the navigational lights is active. It is only revealed by the numerous craft and self-powered ships around it that the dreadnought can be partially depicted, with the light of Sol assisting in revealing some of the dorsal sections.

We zoom in near the dorsal box section, a series of heavy ballistic missile tubes, and the massive railgun, towards the center portion of the vessel. We eventually dive through the large, thick armor plating to reach the dark interior of the ship. Diving a deck below the main bridge is that of Javier and Shira. Both are dressed in their UHN uniforms along with partially elastic Mclevar body armor, both carrying a sidearm of some sort. However, with Shira’s appearance, the body armor had to overlap her extended belly, making her appear even more overweight. Both carried a small pack of emergency gear on the left side of their belts, with Javier also including a dark gray helmet, which was strapped and ready to be donned at any time.

The lack of gravity remained, along with the partially lit interior. A form of assisted power source ensured that the internal lights were lit, giving enough light for others to proceed through the darkness with ease. Javier and Shira were not alone, with countless other crew members standing near the bulkheads. Many of the former Lifen crew members and other UHN personnel were dressed in similar attire to Javier’s, but they already wore their helmets and carried various UHN rifles.

The CO and XO came to a stop near one of the sealed doors. The auditory sound of various individuals speaking with one another could be heard, but was kept to a low volume.

“Transferal of personnel is almost complete,” Javier told Shira. “It looks like we’re on schedule.”

“That remains unseen,” Shira said, hearing a beeping sound come from her pocket. She pulled out her tablet, held it near her snout, and tapped it on. “This is Captain Shira,” she replied to the call.

“Captain,” Petty Officer Amelia’s voice could be heard on the other end. “We’re ready to start the main reactor. You already know this is the first time doing this, so no promises. On your call, Ma’am...”

“No time like the present,” Javier replied.

“Activate the main reactor, Amelia,” Shira said.

There was a pause as Amelia’s voice could be heard. About five seconds would pass when the sound of running electricity began to hum. Outside the ship, the rear module near the main engine thruster housing began to rev up. After another five seconds, the internal lights all switched on. Many of the crew members had to momentarily readjust their eyes for a brief moment.

Instantly, Javier could see the ship was awake. Every light source was active. Energy was flowing through the ship’s veins for the first time ever.

“Alright,” Amelia’s voice could be heard on the comms. “I got mostly good news for you, Captain. Main Fusion reactor is online and stable. It’s operating at 85%.”

“85%?” Javier reacted.

“This is where the bad news comes in, sir. I’m registering a fault error in transfer blocks, decks 01, 001-6T, and 4C. We still have power reaching the ventral railgun, but there’s still going to be a few decks that are without power.”

“Secondary bridge will be unavailable...”

“Yep. It’s the best we can do, sir. The good news is that everything else is online and can be powered up. You want me to start up the centripetal ring?”

“No,” Shira stated. “It will not be needed. Reduce power output to 73% to ease power flow. Power up the main engines and ensure their proper function, Shira out...”

The Shal’rein captain shut down her tablet and placed it in her pocket before tapping the panel next to her. Javier turned to look at the crew in the passageway. He knew that they were only the secondary part of the assault, the supplement to the soldiers in the lower decks below. Many looked at the CO and XO in an honorary way.

The door slid open before they both stepped in. The magnetic boots and Shira’s magnetic wrappings clamped onto the deck with a soft thud.

“Main bridge,” Shira stated. Javier tapped the button inside the elevator before the doors closed.

Inside the elevator, there was the light feeling of being heavier as the entire interior platform began to rise.

“It’s a nice ship,” Javier commented, looking at Shira.

“Yes,” Shira replied calmly. “If only more time were available for its full operation.”

“Our marines are in the lower decks. Stone has a great idea of using the drone launchers to launch our marines. They’re big enough to house a single soldier, although I wouldn’t want to be caught in them in the middle of a battle. My concern is with this ship, though. It’s a paper tiger.”

“Indeed, its full capabilities are untapped, but it will have to do. Its haphazard condition will help play to our ruse, assuming that the other parties follow along with the current plan in place.”

“It’s all we can do,” Javier said, feeling the elevator slow down to a stop.

The elevator door opened up, revealing an open bulkhead passageway leading to several closed rooms before reaching the main open central door in the center. Just before reaching it, there were three unusually dressed soldiers. Unlike the marine power armor, these men were dressed in lighter armor, stronger than meclevar armor, but not as flexible. All three carried a mix of various rifles, sidearms, with one even carrying a powerful sniper rifle of some sort. On their backs were large backpacks, most likely rocket packs with thruster packs connected to the leg armor. On their backs were small, thin black capes that floated in the zero gravity. The colors of black, yellow, red, and brown were everywhere on the armor. The men didn’t wear their helmets, keeping them to the side, allowing Javier to quickly recognize one of the pale-faced individuals almost immediately.

“Jump Troopers...,” Javier remarked, as both the CO and XO came to a halt to look at the men. “Czarek?”

“Darin gives his best wishes to you,” Czarek happily replied in a defiant manner. “Compliments of Earth’s Defense Forces. We’ve been assigned to help protect that walking companion bot of yours during the main assault.”

“I’m surprised you’re not with Darin.”

“Captain Darin’s going to be busy with the whole plan of yours. The Rampage won’t be landing troops ... so he figures that it’s best to send his best men to where the fighting is going to be at.” He smiled at Javier. “Needless to say, he’s never failed in making the right choice...”

“There’s questions to your fighting capabilities,” Shira replied. “You will be fighting in enclosed environments or ones with zero gravity.”

“Hey, no one said the mission was going to be completely fair, but then again, Batrice has never fought the best that BREECA has to offer. Besides, if I’m going to crash into anyone, it’s going to be their soldiers. They’ll never know what hit them.”

“Very well, remain in place and do your duties. Minerva will be your top priority. Ensure she isn’t destroyed.”

“First time I had to defend a bucket of bolts that could actually talk back for once. Don’t worry, Captain. She’s safe with me...”

The CO and XO continued their walk. It didn’t take long for the two to reach the main bridge.

Unlike the former Lifen’s bridge, the Iridium’s bridge carried a hue of light blue and gray throughout the entire area. It was massive, bigger than the Lifen’s bridge, consisting of multiple console stations, at least eleven in total. The huge U-shaped display lined the entire room, providing numerous data feeds of the ship’s status, various reports, and the camera feeds of space. The aroma of fresh air permeated the consoles as they powered up. Despite the ample space and working stations, only five were being used. Patterson manned the centermost chair until he heard the arrival of the CO and XO entering the room. Much like the other crew members, the bridge crew also wore similar meclevar body armor, helmets, and sidearms.

“Captain on the bridge!” Patterson called out, unstrapping himself from the chair and standing up. The others turned their heads to look at the two walking around.

The two forward-most consoles, with the one furthest to the left, had two seats, occupied by Mizu and another light-mustached fellow, possibly a fellow Cebravin. The pale-faced, short-haired blond was busy pointing out the various buttons and controls, ensuring that Mizu was acquiring the necessary knowledge to operate the navigational controls. Meanwhile, the lead navigator had his augmented hand pressed to the main control panel, interfacing with the ship’s controls. The other forward-most console had Ramirez controlling the weapons console. Patterson stepped over to the side console, much like he did with the Lifen, taking a secondary role in communications.

There were two seats for the center command console. Javier noticed that Obasi was sitting in what should have been the engineering console. There was another individual inside the room as well, standing by an empty console. The robotic feline-looking woman was easy to recognize as the CO and XO approached her.

Minerva turned to look at the two. Javier remarked that she was armed, carrying two UHN M80 pistols on both sides of her hip.

“Shira, Javier,” Minerva addressed them. “I awaited your arrival. The computer systems are currently powering up. In 9.56 seconds, I would like to interface with your controls to eliminate any errors or misaligned codes to ensure full operational capability of the Iridium.”

The very thought of that was something that Javier wondered about. An advanced AI having absolute control of the ship’s entire mainframe computer core. Was it safe to do so? Any other individual might have easily called this into question or hesitated. However, with the onslaught of the upcoming battle, all caution had to be thrown to the wind. Minerva was trustworthy.

“Do it,” Javier told her.

Minerva turned to look at her console. She extended her right palm and pressed it to the main panel. Instantly, her eyes, portions of her frame, and the main core in the center of her body began to glow blue.

Suddenly, the bridge consoles began to flash. The man helping Mizu out recoiled and pulled his hand away from the panel.

“Ack!” the man yelled out.

“Everything alright, Petty Officer Cassian?” Javier asked him.

Cassian’s augmented hand stopped glowing. “Yeah, sir,” he replied, his British accent could be heard. “I ... actually felt something powerful hit my system ... like some powerful presence.”

“My apologies for the inconvenience,” Minerva replied, her body not moving. “Processing ... registering 157 errors in the main quantum computer startup sequence. Rerouting ... attempting to bypass incomplete manifolds and uninstalled processors ... Processing complete. All errors cleared. New codes implemented. Quantum Computer Core operating at 250% efficiency...”

“Wha...” Patterson replied. “Sir, she isn’t kidding! She has full control of the system. It’s operating faster than I can keep up.”

“XO,” Obasi called out. “We’re getting a massive power surge in the main bus boards going to the bridge. Minerva, ease up your connection now. You’re calling in too much power.”

Javier and Shira could see that their consoles were flashing, showing various data reports that would flash for half a millisecond before going to the next one. Minerva was processing every piece of data available in the banks and computer core libraries. In less than four seconds, Minerva responded.

“Understood, Petty Officer Obasi...,” Minerva replied, slowing down and returning the main computer to its normal operation. “I’ve interfaced with all controls on the ship. I can continue to push processing power beyond its expected limits to anticipate any actions that Fort Batrice may take.”

“Sir,” Cassian said, turning his head to look at the commanding officers. “Our presence is barely needed. I’m just overlooking the controls at this point. Minerva can fly the entire ship herself.”

“Minerva,” Shira told her. “You may operate the computers beyond their limits, but do not push them past 125% processing speeds. Anymore, and Batrice will likely detect the unusual power flow to the bridge. Allow the crew to operate the ship and focus on your other primary goals. Assist them only when they tell you.”

“Understood...,” Minerva replied, easing up controls. She kept her control of the console and sat down, using her free hand to strap herself into the seat. Meanwhile, her head was focused forward. Finally, her eyes closed as Javier turned to look at his console.

A face emerged on the corner of the screen on all consoles. Javier had almost forgotten Minerva’s true form, the AI being, a bald, artificial, bluish human woman, was looking at each of the personnel commanding the ship, placed at the far corner of the screen.

“My matrix is connected to the computer core mainframe,” Minerva’s voice echoed on Shira and Javier’s consoles. “I stand ready to assist you, Javier and Shira. Cassian can resume normal operation without hindrance...”

Cassian applied his augmented hand to the control, his arm glowing blue again. The petty officer felt an odd form of giddiness. It caused him to almost laugh a little bit as Mizu looked at him.

“What is it, Cassian?” Javier asked him.

“It’s ... I can feel it, sir,” Cassian replied. “I sense Minerva.”

“Hmmm,” Javier said, grabbing a headset and mic before slapping it into his ear. “Everyone, make sure you’re buckled in. Patterson, what’s the ship’s readiness?”

“Tug Natick is ready to release us,” Patterson replied. “Transport Sigma 5 has unloaded the last of the marines and is retrieving the last of the civilian engineers and personnel not taking part in the mission. They need another 3 minutes. Shuttle Gamary has finished the last of the hull modifications and is departing.”

“All ammunition from the UHN Nitro has been transferred, sir,” Ramirez added. “They’re currently engaging decoupling protocols.”

“We’re free to engage under our own power, sir,” Obasi also added. “Once the ships have undocked from us.”

From the viewscreen, Javier could see that the shuttle was veering away. The large munitions ship, the Nitro, was in the process of retracting its docking clamp.

“Go ahead and signal the Natick that it’s free to release us,” Javier said.

“Aye, sir,” Patterson replied. He lifted his headset and began to radio in the message to the nearby ship. Javier turned to look at Minerva’s body sitting on the chair, seeing that it was merely a shell. He had almost forgotten that the real Minerva was watching him from his display.

“I hope you got a chance to evaluate those codes,” Javier told her, looking at his console.

“I’ve analyzed all current codes provided by UHN intelligence,” Minerva replied from the display. “While also considering new ones. There’s a 99% chance that I will overcome all clearances...”

“Patterson,” Shira commanded. “Order the UHN Dervish to proceed to Jump Coordinate B and begin establishing the gate probe ring for the Iridium’s jump. Once the Dervish completes her mission, the Dervish and Mikkelson are free to carry out their next set of objectives.”

“Understood, Ma’am,” Patterson replied.

“How’s the controls, Ramirez?” Javier asked him.

“It’s ... a lot,” Ramirez replied. “I can see why they have three operating stations for it alone.”

“I have improved all targeting parameters,” Minerva told him. “It will greatly reduce your demand to handle weapons.”

“If it’s one thing and one thing only,” he said adamantly. “I want to shoot. It’s what I signed up for, and getting a chance to use a dreadnought’s weapons is something you won’t take away from me.”

“Message sent,” Patterson replied. “The Dervish is en route.”

“Signal Titania Observation Outpost that we’re on schedule,” Shira stated. “They can pass word to Admiral Hazer that ‘The Gift of Odysseus stands ready at Tempest’s Door.’”

“Understood.”

“You’re use of code terms is an unusual one,” Minerva stated. “Seeing that it is unlikely that Fleet Admiral Baxton will intercept this message.”

“One can never be too safe,” Javier told her. “We already left ourselves vulnerable to spies by seeking out volunteers from yesterday, but willing volunteers are going to make a dramatic difference than those forced into a battle they feel they won’t win, both us and Batricians alike.”

“It’s likely that Baxton already surmises a plan in action against him, regardless,” Shira replied. “Let him speculate ... sometimes a simple ruse is hidden in plain sight...”

“Well ... let’s hope that Admiral Hazer and Darin can uphold their end of the mission...”

Inside a similar but different bridge somewhere near Gillan, the UHN Enterprise remained fully crewed. The interior room consisted of several consoles as before, but the room was slightly more crowded, with fewer seats and crew members all manning their posts. On the center console was Admiral Hazer buckled in his seat. On his right, the console near him was occupied by his second-in-command, an individual with a pale complexion, bald, but with a large gray beard, most likely a person born on Aphadus. He was the original captain of the carrier, being in his upper 50s in age.

From Hazer’s viewpoint, the display showed the assembled gate probe ring at near completion. Outside, an entire fleet of warships was at the ready with their own gate rings established. Multiple vortexes were forming.

“Status of the jump gate, Biara,” the bearded man asked his navigator. His voice was so heavy and gravely that his lower lip furled over his upper lip, giving the tone an almost Scottish accent.

“Gate formation at 85% and climbing, sir,” Biara replied, the young woman, lightly turning her head to look at the Captain.

“Captain Noah,” Hazer turned to direct him. “Inform fleets Alpha and Gamma to head into their gate vortexes the moment it’s safe to jump.”

“No confirmation of jump exit, Admiral?” Noah questioned him.

“Celebes’s defense fleet is most likely heading toward our entrance vector. The longer we sit here, the more likely we’re to land right on top of the enemy fleet.”

“Hmmm ... understood, sir.”

“Don’t worry, Captain,” Hazer told him. “This isn’t standard protocol either.”

“Biara, set a course into the gate aperture upon completion. Admiral, setting communication to all ships to make the jump.”

It was a partially risky move as there was no way to accurately tell if the wormhole gates were set to the correct coordinates. However, Hazer knew that this was an intersystem jump, one that had the least likely chance of a miscalculation or a misjump.

The blue vortex was stable in the gate probe ring. The swirling mass of particles was easily visible as lightning erupted from its center.

“Gate formation stable,” Biara called out. “Fleet Alpha and Gamma, ... all ships are heading in...”

Immediately, as each of the gates had stabilized, the rear thrusters of over 60 warships began to move. Most were moving simultaneously, and the subtle blue flames could be seen from the ships. The acceleration inside the Enterprise began to pick up as everyone was pressed to their seats.

From a distance was Fort Rangoon. The space station’s large gate ring was currently offline, but a single small battleship lay near it. The familiar hull design of the Rampage was easy to tell before the Enterprise and its accompanying fleets flew into their respective gates.

Traveling across the Trappist system’s numerous planets to the second farthest away from the star was that of Celebes. From the dark side of the planet was a world covered in dark ice and barren rock. Only the hints of the red light of Trappist had any hope of illuminating the sides of this planet. Being barely within the habitable zone of its parent star, the world lacked much of an atmosphere across its cold surface.

Regardless, there was activity. Numerous artificial lights could be seen from Celebes, made evident by the dark planetoid behind it.

Almost 20 warships resided in a small fleet of former UHN vessels. Battleships and cruisers lined in a simple wall formation with a larger cylindrical profile taking up the center. The Vengeance took up a somewhat similar hull profile to the Enterprise, but had fewer drone slot launchers, focusing on raw firepower and more weapons to make up for its numbers.

Far from Fleet Obsidian was the mass number of vortexes in space. Already, numerous UHN battleships and cruisers were emerging and forming into formation. The Enterprise arrived before the last set of ships filled up the overwhelming fleet of the UHN.

Already, the Vengeance was deploying its drones, a plethora of small cylindrical devices launched from every small launcher like bees leaving their nest. The CIWS devices began to move into position over the Batrice fleet before opening up its gun ports and small missile tubes.

From inside the Enterprise bridge, Hazer could see the fleet ahead, along with Celebes directly behind it. The UHN fleet came to a stop and held position, maintaining a safe distance from the Batrice fleet.

“Jump complete, Admiral,” Noah replied, looking at his console. “All ships are accounted for ... exactly where we should be. Ensign Pierce, status of engagement zone?”

“The Batrice fleet is holding position over Celebes, sir,” a light male voice could be heard. “If we advanced forward, we’d be within five minutes of establishing firing solutions.”

“Deploy all drones,” Hazer ordered. “Sphere formation Beta. Communications officer, open a hail to the Batrice fleet ... maybe we can talk some sense into this before it results in bloodshed...”

“Hailing...,” another female voice echoed on the bridge.

By now, the numerous wormholes behind the fleet had started to dissipate. The Enterprise began to deploy countless drones from its three modules. These devices began to move forward and outward, extending into a spherical wall formation that formed a giant shield of small CIWS weapons in front of the fleet. However, despite possessing numerous devices, space was vast, and the fleet of ships spanning outward was too extensive for the drones to cover.

“Sir,” the comms officer said. “Vice Admiral Thanh is responding to your console, audio only.

“Thanh?” Noah responded. “I know him, Sir.”

“I’ll respond to him first,” Hazer said. “Patch him in.”

“Aye, sir...”

Hazer’s operation station showed a frequency line on his display.

“Carrier Enterprise,” a hardened Chinese-accented male voice echoed. “This is the BNS Vengeance. You’ve entered into Batrice-controlled space. Vacate immediately, or you’ll be fired upon.”

“Thanh, this is Admiral Hazer, commanding the UHN fleet. We’re here to take Celebes Alpha-G station by force or its destruction. All personnel on the outpost are advised to abandon the facility immediately. Your fleet is advised to surrender. Power down your ships, and you won’t be fired upon. All COs and XOs will be interned and guaranteed a fair trial. The crew will not be harmed.”

There was a pause that lasted a few seconds. “No ... Admiral,” the voice grew harsh. “I’ve been ordered to maintain the perimeter protecting Celebes. Fort Batrice has been notified of your arrival. Additional reinforcements are en route to this location. The UWA has committed to all-out war. Leave this system now, or you will be destroyed.”

“Vice Admiral,” Noah’s voice could be heard responding on the comms. “Old chap, this is Captain Noah. Fleet Admiral Baxton and your government have gone rogue. You’re executing your own people. We’re giving you a chance ... we don’t want to see your crew get hurt. All we want is Celebes.”

“Captain Noah, I know who you are,” Thanh replied, causing a brief pause again. “You expect me to abandon my post and be made examples of to the UWA? To weaken my home planet?”

“Thanh, listen to yourself!” Noah got aggressive, causing Hazer to sit back and watch the spectacle. “We have the opportunity to avoid bloodshed ... I remember you ... I met you and your family over a couple of years ago, just before you were given command of the Vengeance. As I recall, your oldest daughter got married and you became a grandfather. If we start shooting each other now, you might not ever get a chance to be with your wife ... is that what you want?”

“Captain Noah, Admiral Hazer,” the Vengeance’s Vice Admiral grew adamant. “Your presence is a violation of Batrice’s space. We will not surrender to the UHN or the UWA ... However, because of your desire to avoid bloodshed, I’ve advised Alpha-G’s personnel to evacuate immediately. Understand, though, that if you engage us, we’ll use all necessary force to defend ourselves. All glory to Batrice ... Vice Admiral Thanh, out...”

The channel closed, causing Noah to shake his head. He looked at Hazer.

“Gowk...,” Noah said. “He’ll get everyone killed...”

“Notify the fleets to advance forward,” Hazer instructed. “25% engine power. Begin acquiring firing solutions and fire at will, but do not fire at the observation outpost.”

“All weapon stations,” Noah added. “Target the enemy fleet and open fire the moment we get in range.” The Captain looked back at Hazer. “The Batricians have sent out a mayday signal to Batrice. We’re already picking up numerous gate apertures. Looks like it might be Fleet Emerald and other additional ships.”
