Chapter 8

Science Fiction Sex Story: Chapter 8 - The United States settled the Project 1950s as a lifeboat in case of a nuclear war. The founders picked an alternate time line where humanity died out with the Mt. Toba eruption of 75,000 BC. It is currently some 18,000 BCE, and the height of one of the periodic ice ages. Wendy van Veldt is an engineer-in-training. Her plans for the next few years are to start her career, and live happily ever after with her husband and her wife. Things don't quite work out that way.

On Saturday, when Amy had been back with us a week, I had to get out of the house. It wasn’t the easiest time, we were all walking around as if expecting a shoe to drop or something. Amy still slept in the other room. Michael had a separate bed, Chris built it for him one evening, and we made an expedition out of finding just the right bedspread and blankets for him. Then I had the bright idea of ‘jammies’. He needed them—Jenny had them—and so we had to spend some time finding them, trying them on, and so on.

We made it a family expedition, though Chris stayed home and built additional furniture for the kids’ bedrooms. Amy’s kids had arrived with only the clothes they were wearing. Someone had gotten them a few things when they were at the clinic in Center, but it wasn’t enough. Kids can go through clothes in a hurry, even if they don’t outgrow them. So Amy and I shopped and shopped, and shopped. We got enough for Angel and Michael, and when we got home we promptly threw everything in the wash. Amy and I both ironed, and when we were finished the kids were decent. That left just her.

I took Amy shopping for her that Friday. Cedar View doesn’t have the greatest selection in its stores (yet!), so we took the train to High Post, a slightly larger town that is just chock-full of stores; the town founders deliberately set out to be a hub for shopping because that was where the railroad split and new towns were started from. Amy and I spent the evening buying clothes, shoes, and necessities. It was a lot of fun. I think shopping can be therapeutic for a woman, and by the time the evening ended we were giggling and laughing as we brought our finds home.

On Saturday, Jenny started fussing. “Swimming,” she said. “Go swimming.”

I looked at Amy. “Are you up to that? It’s been a few years.”

She shrugged. “Maybe.” She glanced at the other room. “Is Chris coming?”

I asked him. He was never a big swimmer and said no, he’d stay home and work on some furniture he was building for a neighbor. Amy seemed relieved at that. So she rounded up Michael and Angel, while I sent Jenny for some towels. We finally got all loaded up with everything in the proper bag and set off for the public pool.

In Three Valleys, a pool is always one of the first things built when you’re starting a town. Three Valley summers are warm—the winters are only a little cooler and definitely wetter—and a place to socialize and swim is almost a necessity. As time goes on, people add to it: a shallow wading pool for the kids and a play area with water jets and so on for the toddlers. There’s usually a diving pool, and often a separate pool set aside for those who want to do some power-swimming. The typical “pool” goes from being a single pool surrounded by shrubbery to a much bigger water park with patios for relaxing, small shops selling refreshments, and, oh yes, a place to get wet. In Terminus and the other large towns, they might even have someone who can give you a massage or trainers who can help you exercise.

The pools in Three Valleys serve the same purpose as the Roman Baths. It is a social setting where everyone is equal. You lose a lot of your pretensions when you’re nude. You can be standing there, drink in hand, casually minding the kids, and talking with an older man, and later realize that you just had a conversation with the Governor of Three Valleys.

Amy had been away from this for four years. I didn’t know very much about how things had been for her, except for the few tidbits she’d let drop. I wasn’t even sure she’d been allowed to go swimming; probably not, I concluded, watching how nervous she seemed. But she’d been relieved when I told her Chris wouldn’t be coming. For some reason, it’s easier to be bare in front of strangers than it is with someone you’re close to, and in her case, I think the man-woman dynamic was happening. She’d see Chris as a lover again, and I wasn’t sure she was ready for that.

We only had to walk three blocks to the pool—Cedar View isn’t that big a town—and I carried Jenny. She’d been walking for a while, but three blocks pushed what she was comfortable with, and when she got tired, she got cranky. When we came in sight of the park, she began to squirm and get antsy. I let her down, and she ran there, and then ran back.

“Mommy, hurry!” She tugged at my hand, trying to get me to walk faster.

Amy shot me an amused look. Michael was hanging back, being very cautious at the prospect of something new. He’d had a lot of changes in his life in the last two weeks, and I think he needed some stability. I wondered if he’d feel better at home.

The real test was how Amy would react. The locker room—unlike what I saw in Center, there was no separate changing room for men—was only partially in use. Amy sort of swallowed and began working on her blouse. Jenny undressed quickly, and then practically hopped from foot to foot, waiting for me. Michael stared at her, and I realized he very likely had never seen a naked girl. Well, the public pool was a much better place to learn that than somewhere else. At least here, we could answer any questions he might have.

I was finally down to my sandals and towel. I checked in the mirror. The baby wasn’t showing yet, but my breasts looked a little fuller; I wryly thought that I finally had a chest the same size as Mary, the girl who’d been my classmate in college. I already knew the shape I’d have in a few months, and wasn’t looking forward to it. When I’d been pregnant with Jenny, Chris had told me that I ‘glowed’, whatever that meant, but I knew I was as big as a barge, awkward, and probably a few other things. I needed to enjoy this body while I still had the chance. Getting it back after the baby was going to be hard work.

I was shocked when I saw Amy. She’d put on a few pounds, I’d seen that under her clothes, and she had a bandage around her right ankle. Now she’d removed it. There was an angry red scar on her ankle, and some other marks that looked like they’d been made by a lash. She saw my glance, and nodded.

“If I misbehaved, he whipped me. I misbehaved a lot, at least in the early days. Some of these marks are several years old.”

I’d be self-conscious with whip marks, too. Nevertheless, I smiled. “Shall we get some sun?”

Jenny had already gone to the door and back, and now had an impatient look on her face. “Coming, sweetie,” I told her.

Amy and her kids tagged along behind us. I stepped onto the patio and stood there, shaking my hair loose. I loved this. I felt as free as could be, and wanted to just stand there, eyes closed, letting the sun warm my body and the breeze tickle my skin.

After a moment I drew a deep breath and followed my daughter to the poolside where she was already waiting. Amy followed reluctantly, carrying Angel, while Michael practically clung to her.

Jenny had made it directly for the wading pool, and with a squeal of delight, she jumped in. The water came only a little past her knees, but the pool tapered a bit toward the other end, deepening slightly so she’d be waist-deep. Michael followed her, and in that moment, whatever barrier the two had had between them vanished. Angel, bless her heart, saw the spurts of water from the water plaza and got totally engrossed by one of the jets. One of the kids had put an inflatable ball on it, and the jet would shoot it a few feet into the air. It would bounce around, and the kids would chase it.

“This brings back memories,” Amy said. She spread her towel on a lounger and settled back. I handed her the sunscreen, and she began gooping herself up. It was obvious she hadn’t gotten much sun because her body was as white as a piece of paper.

“Remember that pool near where we lived? The only trouble with it was that it was inside.”

“Yeah, it was too cold there to lie around hoping for sun.”
