Chapter 83: The Operation

It is a battle against people who believe Earth has lost its way, and they intend to destroy Earth if it does not comply. David sat in the padded medical chair and made himself comfortable. Although he could not see the fasteners, he felt them tighten around his head and body.
Dr. Seessell Scelesstessness’s head appeared twenty centimeters before David’s face. “I will be sitting close to your left ear. I manipulate my instruments through an AI, which reduces my movement by ten to ten thousand.”
‘Why must you be so close to me?’ David asked.
‘The visualizer can’t see two critical fibers in the dimension Ruyunut. I must use my psychic vision to see those fibers. I can only do it when I am close to you. We will die if I pull too hard on any anchoring fibers or reduce the tension incorrectly.”
“Could the medical AI release the visible fibers?” David asked.
“She has not had the training, and I cannot risk her inadvertently touching the critical pair of fibers that we hide in another dimension. As I work, she will learn to do the job.”
A doctor in a pale blue coat slid a holographic generator on a metal tray onto a wheeled table, a meter in front of David.
Ten other doctors slid into David’s peripheral vision and raptly watched the hologram.
The device was a shiny silver cube with twenty-centimeter sides. It was anchored by twenty half-centimeter knitted metal ropes that extended into the distance. David could not see the walls of his sinus. The box was nestled on pink tissue, and he saw the borders of cells on the surface.
‘The enlargement is perfect. I can see your workspace clearly,’ said David.
‘You might want to close your eyes as I begin,’ said Dr. Seessell Scelesstessness. ‘I have an unfortunate shake. The AI will learn to compensate, but it may distress you to see it.’
Clutching a thick tubular device, a claw darted out of the shadows. It moved erratically and almost hit several peripheral fibers. ‘Oops, that was close; I almost blew us up!’
David cringed.
The AI slowly reduced the pendular movement.
‘Now, we will get going, but first, I will change my consciousness and show you what I see.’
A second ghostly image formed, superimposed on the first.
A red arrowhead formed and pointed at a misty cable not seen in the first image. ‘That is one of the cables. I cut that in one second. Where is the first one?’
The picture turned slowly three hundred and sixty degrees. ‘Did you see it, David?’
‘No, could you turn it much slower? I suspect it must be much shorter and anchors the box on the bottom,” said David. ‘It must be in the shadows. Can you move the light as we turn?’
‘The light does not penetrate the dimension.’
‘It does not matter; it obscures what we see in the dimension,’ said David.
The picture turned much more slowly, and the light moved and intensified.
‘Stop! I see it at the bottom right corner of the box,’ said David. ‘It is short and runs along the sinus parallel to the epithelium. Look for the anchor point on the surface, then follow the cable back to the cube. It is tough to see.’
‘Whew, what a relief! That was a sneaky place to place the cable and anchor. There is something wrong!’
‘What do you mean; something wrong?’ Asked one of the doctors.
‘The first cable should be from the top corner of the cube. That means the cube is upside down. See the arrow on the box next to the rope; it points down, not up.’
‘Yes, I can see what you mean,’ said the doctor.
‘David, fortunately, you saw the anchor. I was looking where I expected to see the string. We insert the anchor from above into the floor of the dimension.’
‘Yes, I can see what you mean,’ said a doctor.
‘David, I was looking where I expected to see the string. I insert the anchor into the floor of the dimension,’ said Dr. Seessell Scelesstessness, moving his claw and the tube closer. The line swung past the cable and then back.
‘Whoops, that was my second slip. Lucky for both of us, I didn’t hit anything.’
Dr. Seessell Scelesstessness laughed loudly. ‘I haven’t operated for many years. I must get back in practice.’
The tube moved slowly and precisely. Dr. Seessell Scelesstessness pressed the front down onto the cable. “This tube acts as a knife in dimension Ruyunut.’
The cable split apart, and the picture showed the other rope emerging from the middle of the box in dimension Ruyunut.
‘Let me find a point I can cut where I won’t interfere with the other strings.’
The Elder turned the image slowly. He then tried to move the tube to cut the transdim cord without touching the other strings but couldn’t maneuver it through the others. The claw lurched forward and bent one of the other strings. ‘Dammit, I can’t get through the other strings.’
‘What does that mean?’ David asked.
‘As I cut a string, the device will explode in thirty minutes unless I can complete the job,’ said the Elder.
‘Bloody hell,’ said David, his stomach lurching. ‘What are you going to do?’
