Chapter 82: Exposed

Five hours later, David woke up. He turned as if to make himself comfortable, glanced at his watch, kept his eyes closed, and left his body.
Reinforcements had joined the soldiers guarding him and set up barriers on both sides of the corridor. As he prepared to transport past them, a guard noticed him.
Damn, I forgot to make myself less visible, and the light is bright. One of the guards spotted me.
David jumped behind an imposing, heavily armored python.
‘It was the phantom of doom. Did you see the phantom?’ The guard shrieked and hissed.
‘I also saw it!’ Exclaimed a cobra. ‘It disappeared. Who sent it, and who will it kill?’
Curses, they saw me!
David jumped into the Council meeting room, blending into the surroundings.
‘The troops are rounding up the known associates of the Colonel,’ said the green mamba on the Council. ‘We’ve interrogated her team, and they identified the doctors and the others. We’ll have the last of the traitors within the hour.’
‘Excellent work, you have done well. I want to get David Cohen back in here. I don’t believe his story. Has he communicated with anyone?’
The Elder’s communicator flashed red. ‘Yes, what is it? I asked not to be interrupted.’ The Elder hissed irritably.
A hologram formed and enlarged.
‘What is it, Capt. Sileessa? What can be urgent enough to interrupt us?’ The Elder asked irascibly.
‘Elder, I am sorry to interrupt you, but I must show you something I believe will interest you.’
‘What is it, Captain?’
‘I will show you what my holovid and the holocams on the walls captured.’
The picture clearly showed the ghostly figure of David walking through his wall and jumping behind the python when observed. Then David became almost invisible. The camera moved through several alternate modes of observation. It detected David briefly outside the Council meeting room and then walking through the wall.
‘He must be here with us! Display the same view of this room.’
The holovid showed David in the room between two of the guards. The guards looked where they expected to see him but saw nothing.
The Council members lowered themselves and averted their eyes.
‘David Cohen, are you with us?’ Asked the Elder tremulously.
What should I do? Do I transport myself back to my room or acknowledge I am here? I am flying by the seat of my pants.
What does the Council lying on the ground mean?
David made himself faintly visible.
‘Yes, I am here as promised,’ said David.
‘Are you not one of the three who rules the Paradigm?’ Asked the green mamba.
‘Yes, but I am also from a primitive planet and an advanced being. Have you gained control over your ship?’ David asked impatiently.
‘Yes, we are arresting the last insurrectionists,’ said the green mamba.
‘Why do you not look at me?’ David asked.
‘Wraiths, like you helped us after we became sentient. They gave us the use of our residual upper limbs. They also killed many who opposed them. We believe they were Gods. We sadly missed them when they moved on. Were they your people?’ Asked the Elder.
‘I do not know,’ said David. ‘I have lost touch with my people. As I told you, we met someone ancient called the Sonuam. They came from another Multiverse and were hunting the Sugigoth. They can do as I do. We thought we might be Sonuam, but they told us we were not.’
‘When you say we, who are the others?’ Asked the Elder.
‘The three of us who lead the Paradigm, our partners and some friends,’ said David.
‘Do you know of other Overseers?’
‘Yes, we killed several in the void and this universe. They took control of many within the Paradigm and the Agglomeration. We found them through those who were invaded. They spied on our forces and allied with our enemies, the Gnituruta and the Drunduh.’
‘Why would the Sugigoth ally with us?’ An anaconda asked, lying on the floor in a helix of thick coils.
‘The Overseer who allied with you was a renegade. It allied with you as the Sugigoth use others to fulfill their purpose, and they would have used you to help them find others so they could feed on their psychic energy. Once you fulfilled your purpose, they would have fed on you. I don’t believe your Overseer knew of the plans of the other Overseers.’
‘What was the shape of the wraiths you met?’ David asked.
‘They could change the appearance of their mist,’ said the Elder. ‘Is that something you can do?’
David changed into an XaX and then tried to become a snake. He succeeded after a few attempts.
‘Yes, you do much as they did,’ said the Elder.
‘What was the solution you could provide for us?’ Asked the anaconda.
‘In our galaxy, we have several planets with non-sentient animals. We can organize hunting vacations for you. We also farm animals.’
‘What is a vacation?’ Asked the cobra.
David explained the concept in considerable detail. The Strefonis asked question after question before moving on to an exploration of the tourist industry and its operations.
‘Is hunting accepted on your primitive planet?’
‘We had many endangered species before the recent intervention of the Paradigm. We’ve increased the jungles and stopped poachers.’
‘What are poachers?’ Asked the night adder.
David explained the concept and the related illegal trade.
