“Brendan, how was dinner last night?” Siobhan asked.
Peter put down the newspaper and looked at Brendan.
“We went to the ship and had dinner there. Then, afterward, we visited the hospital for a checkup. The Cardinal offered us an opportunity to study on the ship.”
“Surely that isn’t possible,” said Siobhan.
“We traveled to the ship by walking through a door,” said Brendan.
“That sounds like a wonderful way to travel. Will you accept the opportunity?” Siobhan asked.
Brendan winced, then sighed. “I couldn’t sleep thinking about it.”
“What is the problem?” Peter asked.
“We won’t be back here for fifty years. I’ll miss you all.”
“Could we speak with you?” Siobhan asked.
“We can talk with you whenever we want to.”
“What are the major issues you must consider?” Siobhan asked.
“The Cardinal told us the aliens don’t like where we have gone with religion and detest rigid belief systems. So if I stay or go, I won’t be able to be a priest. I don’t like the attitudes and behavior of the aliens.”
“That must have been a terrible shock for you,” said Siobhan. “So, what would you do on the ship?”
Peter waved the folded newspaper in the air. “The paper’s front page says the aliens will talk with us tonight at 7 p.m. They will explain what they have done and why and list what they expect Earth to do. The show will be on every TV channel, it will go up on the Internet, and there will be a transcript sent to every paper,” said Peter, pointing to the article. “I was watching the late news last night. Your mother was already asleep. An alien woman broke into the news in the middle and said she would speak with us today. If I saw her on the street, I wouldn’t have noticed she was different,” said Peter. “Brendan, you didn’t answer your mother. What will you do on the ship?”
“I didn’t get a chance to reply. You interrupted our conversation. If I go, the Cardinal suggests I do what he calls the Developmental System. He believes it will suit me. It’s much like what I believed spiritual practice would be. However, he warned it would be heavy going as the instructors looked down on primitives. We will return to the ship in a few days to meet the tutors and discuss our work. Where is Ashlyn, mom?”
“She must’ve left home early. I didn’t see her. She left a note to apologize and say she had an early tutorial. She’ll be back by dinner time,” said Siobhan. “That girl works too hard.”
“Michael, the Cardinal suggested David and Ashlyn do medical training, but they will be with me in some of the studies I do.”
“Could you consider studying medicine?” Peter asked.
“I’ll make up my mind about what to do over the next month. I don’t need to decide unless the Bishop offers me an opportunity.”
“If you stay here, what will you do if you can’t be a priest?” Peter asked.
