‘Please excuse me; I think I will take a brief walk and get a snack from the canteen,’ said David.
‘Is it a good idea? I’ll come with you,’ said Ashlyn.
‘No, you stay here, Ashlyn; I must do this on my own, you know why.”
David stood, stretched, and strolled out.
‘That is decidedly odd,’ said Brendan. ‘Adm. Tuidlaal, none of the guards followed David. Something is not right.’
‘I’ll go after him,’ said Dorel.
‘No, stay here,’ said the Admiral. She turned towards her guards at the back of the room. ‘Sgt. Dudiyn, send two guards after David. What has happened to the guards of the others? Why did they not follow David?’
The sergeant sent two guards to follow David. ‘Admiral, this is unusual and disturbing. I will find out what is going on.’ The sergeant and one of the corporals strode out.
The sergeant returned seconds later. ‘Admiral, the guards outside are dead. I called for replacements and reinforcements.’
‘Ask Gen. Krema Somossy to come here immediately. Sergeant, wait for backup before you go anywhere,” said Adm. Tuidlaal. ‘We must move quickly. I have a bad feeling about this. Seal all exits from the ship.’
The Admiral walked out of hearing, then talked briefly on her communicator before returning.
‘What are you thinking?’ Ashlyn asked, looking at the Admiral.
‘Gen. Krema Somossy leads the military police and is an outstanding investigator. She is Strefonis, one of the snakes, and will be here shortly. She will review what has happened.’
Gen. Strefonis slithered into the room with an entourage of reptiles and a tiny dinosaur the size of a twelve-year-old child. Strefonis was silver and four meters long and three hundred cm at her widest point of contact with the ground. She reared up as she reached the Admiral, demonstrating she had two delicate arms. Her hands had two fingers and an opposable thumb. Her forked green tongue darted in and out of her mouth.
“Admiral, we have a problem. Thirty-three guards are dead, and we cannot find David Cohen. Introduce me to the others and then tell me what happened,” the General requested.
The Admiral introduced Ashlyn, Brendan, Dorel, Messa, and Dridget to the General and then pointed to Ashlyn.
‘General, David said he was going for a walk and didn’t ask me to accompany him. When I offered to go along, he unusually declined my offer.’
‘Why was that unusual, Ashlyn Murphy?’
‘David loves company and never says he wants to go for a walk to think. He likes to sit and talk to others as he thinks. I have known him since we were children, and David always asks others to go with him unless it is inappropriate. He is shy but loves company. If someone offers to accompany him, he is delighted and welcomes them.’
‘His manner was also odd; he looked distracted as if he was listening to someone. I immediately felt something was wrong, but he left before I could react. Usually, I can feel David. We have a link of some kind. I have lost contact,’ said Brendan.
The General met the eyes of the Admiral.
