Chapter 70: Saving the Queen

‘The ship is powering up to leave,’ said Keresen. ‘You have ten minutes to abort the escape. I can send some backup bridge crew to help you.’
“Send them ten minutes after with the second batch of the troops. We’ll collect the XaXlets in the hanger.”
They jumped to the hangar, instructed the XaXlets, left their bodies on mats, and jumped across the Sugigoth ship.
Makuto, in XaX form, jumped from the hospital door onto the back of the previous XaX Queen, now Overseer. David dived behind her, his claws grabbing the thorax(mesosoma). The possessed XaX Queen sagged to the ground, futilely trying to throw them off. Ashlyn grabbed the Overseer’s abdomen(Metasoma) and sucked the XaX’s energy. Makuto maintained a firm grip on the Overseer’s head.
The XaXlets knew what to do. They efficiently leaped on the backs of the Sugigoth and raced for the head. If they were not thrown off, they absorbed the enemy quickly. XaXlets also used their weapons to blast Sugigoth, who rushed toward the Overlord. The Sugigoth were frantic and dodged. They were not easy to hit as they zig-zagged.
“I can feel the XaX queen is fighting along with me. I am pulling, and she is pushing the Overseer out. I must be careful not to extract her. I need much more time.”
Sugigoth poured into the room. A large group of Sugigoth overwhelmed the Dulmeliv vanguard.
David and Ashlyn had no choice but to leap off the Overseer to help the troops and the XaXlets.
Makuto paused, briefly losing her concentration. An enraged ox stumbled and fell onto the Overseer’s metasoma, a XaXlet holding its head.
The Overseer writhed, managed to throw Makuto off, and tried to bite Makuto. Makuto dodged and then leaped back onto the possessed XaX Queen. Makuto held onto the Queen with all six claws and continued her task. Brendan stopped yet another desperate ox galloping toward the Overseer.
Makuto jumped off the XaX queen. “Let’s dash to the bridge and help them. I sucked in the Overseer. We will come back for the XaX Queen.”
“XaXlets in platoons A, B, C jump until you find the bridge and help neutralize all opposition,” said Dorel.
“I know where it is; I will transport us,” said Makuto.
Makuto transported them to the enormous bridge. It was full of fighting Sugigoth, XaXlets, and Dulmeliv.
An injured Sugigoth, with an XaXlet on its back, slammed into Makuto, knocking her out.
David pulled Makuto to the wall and joined the melee. The Sugigoth fought desperately. Ashlyn, David, Dorel, Messa, and Dridget found grabbing the jumping and weaving beasts difficult. The Dulmeliv had no suitable weapon for close-quarters fighting.
‘Dulmeliv, withdraw to the walls and use your assault weapons,’ David ordered.
‘We must hurry. The ship is close to jumping,” said the Dulmeliv pilot, looking at the pilot’s hologram. ‘Please help me get to the controls.’
‘XaXlets platoons, D, E, and F to the bridge; we need your help,’ Dorel called.
Dorel, Messa, and Dridget directed the arriving XaXlets. Slowly, the group gained control of the bridge and helped the pilot reach the control station.
‘Dulmeliv, assist the XaXlets in holding a perimeter. Protect the pilot at all costs.’
The pilot worked frantically. ‘There are only sixty seconds left, and I can’t stop the jump. See if the Engineer can shut off the drives.’
The Engineer worked frantically on another hologram.
There was a commotion at the door; the XaX queen staggered in. ‘I can shut it off; please help me get there. I managed to regain control of myself but am out of energy.’
The Queen lumbered forward with help from a Dulmeliv soldier, one on each side.
‘We only have twelve seconds,’ said the pilot.
The Queen moved to the pilot’s control. She manipulated the hologram and then pulled a slider on the hologram down as far as it would go. ‘It is done,’ said the Queen and collapsed.’
A Dulmeliv medic rushed forward to examine the Queen. ‘She is dead,’ said the doctor sadly. ‘I cannot detect any life force.’
Ashlyn looked at David. They darted over to the XaX Queen, placed their claws on her thorax and abdomen, and gave her energy. ‘Ok,’ said Ashlyn to the medic, ‘see if you can get her heart started.’
The medic bustled over and, after a few minutes, said. “The XaX Queen is alive but weak. She will survive. What did you do?’
‘We drained her of energy when we attacked the Overseer. It is a miracle she walked here. We gave back what we could,’ Ashlyn explained.
‘Can you control the ship?’ Brendan asked the Engineer.
‘Yes, we can,’ said the pilot and Engineer simultaneously.
‘Can you guys reexamine the strands of time after lunch and let us know if there is anything relevant we should be doing?’ Vendelin asked. ‘The XaX Queen is doing well; the doctors say she is malnourished but recovering.’
‘What do your scientists think of the Sugigoth ships?” Brendan asked.
‘On the surface, they look unsophisticated. The Sugigoth ships are a patchwork of different technologies but at a deeper level. Our AIs looked at the educational material you gave us, David. They say it is a poor job of cobbling together the work of many civilizations, but much of it is in advance of us,’ Vendelin added.
‘Do we know anything of their history?’ Ashlyn asked. ‘We haven’t had time to look at much of what we took from them.’
