‘What is going on?’ Keresen asked as he slowly regained consciousness. “Why did you stun me?”
Vendelin and his team punched through Keresen’s defenses as if nothing was there. Brendan, Dorel, and her people joined them, as did Imra and Atra. Then Kreia, some of David’s and Ashlyn’s classmates, Seka, and some of Brendan’s classmates followed after them. The groups split up to find the elusive Sugigoth.
The larger group rendezvoused sometime later. ‘Did anyone find anything?’ Vendelin asked.
‘I’ll take everyone to see what I found. I’ve found a carefully hidden structure not native to Keresen’s brain,’ said Ashlyn.
The group followed her.
‘Whatever it is, it is well disguised,’ said Vendelin. ‘I can hardly see how it differs from the rest of Keresen. How did you find it?’
‘I didn’t find it. I sensed the Sugigoth as I floated past,’ said Ashlyn.
Brendan formed a body. He pushed and banged on the structure and felt around its edges. ‘I can feel a gap, and I’m going to put it in my hand and pull it open.’
It was a door, and mist flowed out and raced away as it opened. Vendelin chased it down, entered the fog, and paralyzed it. ‘You can all go through now.’
They all dived through telepathically.
Vendelin joined them and created a body that looked like his usual. Brendan was about to blast a hazy form until it solidified. It was Keresen.
‘I guessed what happened after you guys bashed your way through my defenses. I tagged along, and once I saw that structure, I knew exactly what had happened. I want to exact my revenge,’ said Keresen. ‘Since I spent time with you guys, I can make a body. Vendelin, you can also do it.’
‘I’m sorry, Keresen,’ said Vendelin.
‘I know you had no alternative. I would have done the same for you. This time, the Sugigoth don’t know we are coming. Can we scour my brain when we return to ensure there isn’t a second one hiding?’ Keresen asked.
‘Of course, my friend. I hope you enjoy the benefits of your association with Brendan, David, and Ashlyn. If you spend time with them, they give you the ability to create a body in this reality construct,” said Vendelin. ‘Take a minute to make sure you can access your weapons. We’ve practiced.’
‘This ship is quite unlike the last one,’ said Brendan. ‘This section looks like a weapons control center or engineering. The last places were rocky caverns. Perhaps we’ve entered a different part of the ship?’
‘Regardless of where we are, I brought enough explosives to destroy a battleship,’ said Vendelin. ‘I can set the charges so that the charges will explode if we are no longer present on the ship. I also have a remote detonator, and I also have a timer.’
‘Can you set the time for an hour ahead and use the trigger device that detonates it once we are back in Keresen?’ Brendan asked.
Vendelin nodded, pulled out several tiny packages, and set the charges. He placed them unobtrusively under pieces of equipment.
“We can move on,” said Vendelin. ‘I have more explosives I can use in a suitable spot.’
As Ashlyn looked at the wall, a concealed door opened. An ox peered through and quickly withdrew. The door slammed shut.
‘That ends our surprise,’ said Ashlyn.
‘Yes, but it doesn’t end all of them. Hold my hand,’ said Brendan. He transported the group to a different section of the ship.
‘We don’t lose our telepathic team; they moved as we move,’ said Vendelin.
Vendelin transported himself around a hanger carrying cruiser-sized ships made of rock. ‘A group of creatures is playing a game near an open door.’ He pointed to the vast hangar door.
‘Practice transporting yourselves. Vendelin will pick a creature for you, and when he signals, you will jump and grab the side of its head. Imagine you are sucking something in through your hands. See if you can do as we do.’
‘How will we hold it?’ Seka asked.
‘You sink in your nails,’ Ashlyn explained, showing how she held her hands. ‘I jump onto its back and sink in my claws below those weird ears. If you fall, transport yourself back into position. Your nails sink in deeply. I may use the XaX shape as I am bigger and heavier and have robust pincers on my six legs.”
They each practiced some jumps and followed Vendelin to a position behind a low wall where they could remain concealed but observe their prey.
They jumped on Vendelin’s command. David’s ox darted towards the door just as he transported. It was halfway down a wide corridor when he caught it. He heard the noise of galloping hooves some distance away. David jumped back into the hangar. ‘There is a big herd of oxen coming. Prepare to jump.’
Vendelin pulled out a weapon, turned the one in the corridor into dust, and did the same with the other ox corpses. ‘Jump back where we were.’
Ten seconds later, two platoons of oxen entered the hanger, briefly looked around, and left.
‘What now, Vendelin?’ Ashlyn asked.
‘I’ve brought the cloaking devices we use for our troops when we explore the void’—Vendelin pulled them out of his pack and hung them around the neck or behind the head of each of them. The cord shrank to form a tight-fitting band. ‘Push the depression on the front, and it switches on.’
Four oxen entered the hangar.
‘That group looks relaxed. I will jump near them, and if they react, can the trio join me in disposing of them?”
Vendelin switched on his device and jumped. The oxen didn’t see him. A few seconds later, the ox in the rear collapsed, then another fell. It made a noise, alerting the last two. They galloped further into the hanger.
Vendelin quickly dealt with them and vaporized them all. Seconds later, he was back.
‘I like this new set of abilities. I am feeling more confident and competent using them,’ said Vendelin. ‘I think we will alert them to our presence if we use powers. We use power sensors in our ships, and I suspect they do.’
‘I learned a considerable amount from my ox,’ said Keresen. ‘I know where to find the Overseer.’
‘Let me transport all of you there. This time, I will tackle the Overseer. David and Ashlyn, you tackle the most prominent guards. I will jump us again if we don’t land in the correct position,’ said Brendan after Keresen described where they were to go.
