“I like your yacht, Brendan,” said Atra. “The Council knows how to do things!”
“Yes, the old Council knew how to spend money. We had a thousand yachts to choose from and an exclusive dock. The waste was stupendous. Will you see the engineers while we do what we came here for?”
“Yes, we’ve got lots to talk to them about,” said Imra, “we’ve also brought along prototypes to play with. What is on your schedule?”
“We are meeting with Prof. Khyrmin Kelrona first, and then we will talk to Prof. Kreia Nelselyn,” David answered. We’ll see you at lunch if we can. I think it will be a long, hard day.”
“It sounds nasty. Make sure you are safe,” said Atra, waving as she and Imra peeled off to the corridor leading to engineering.
“Where are we meeting, Khyrmin?” Ashlyn asked.
“We will meet in his office. Seka hasn’t left her room for a week,” said Brendan.
“I hope we aren’t too late,” said David.
“We came within hours of him calling us,” said Ashlyn. “Come this way; I know a shortcut through stores.”
Ashlyn led the way through the bowels of the ship. “This is the back of his office,” —Ashlyn pointed—”If we peep around here, we can see if Seka is around.”
“Khyrmin is in his office holding his massive head in his hands,” said Brendan, knocking on the door. It opened almost immediately.
Brendan introduced Khyrmin to Keresen Iudprost and explained that he was an ancient from one of the oldest galaxies and specialized in the Developmental Stream.
Khyrmin looked gaunt and haunted. “Thank you for coming, but I believe I called you too late.”
“Why, what is happening?” Ashlyn asked.
“When I first told you I thought she was in trouble, she refused to acknowledge it and accept help. She said she had handled ‘it’ for years and wouldn’t give up. Two weeks ago, she began to cancel classes. Seka began talking to herself when she believed I didn’t hear her. A week ago, she refused to get out of bed and began to argue with ‘it.’”
“What led you to call us?” David asked.
“Seka asked me to call you three. She told me it was winning and it could get out. She then told me some of those on your Council were similarly ‘infected’ with ‘it,’” Khyrmin explained.
Ashlyn, David, and Brendan looked at each other frowning, expressions grim.
“Yesterday, after I called you, Seka began screaming, trying to protect herself with her arms, and shouted that the creatures were after her.”
“Have either of you slept at all since the voices began?” Ashlyn asked.
“Seka hasn’t slept all week and hardly for the last three months. After she screamed, she collapsed. That was when I called Kreia Nelselyn. She took her to the hospital.”
“Why don’t you have a sleep while we work on her?” David suggested.
“I can’t rest until I know what’s happening,” said Khyrmin.
“Seka is in the same state as Anayees,” said Prof. Kreia Nelselyn, Ashlyn’s and David’s medical mentor. “Nothing we have done helped Anayees. When students failed to prove Neruk, they entered the same state. Khyrmin told me he saw it happen several times in the distant past. If an entity entered Seka, we don’t know how to deal with it.”
“What have you tried?” Keresen asked.
Kreia launched into an extended exposition of all the previous failed attempts. The list was exhaustive.
“That is a wide-ranging list of attempts,” said Keresen.
“Keresen, do you have experience in this area?” Kreia asked.
“Yes, I do,” said Keresen. We tried many methods before achieving success. Today, I will supervise the trio and teach them what to do. If you and one other wish to join us, I would welcome you. However, first, I wish to visit your Neruk carapace.”
Kreia nodded. “I will bring along Dr. Silicaa Shrissk. She demonstrates a strong interest in psychic trauma and injury.”
After Kreia retrieved Dr. Shrissk, they trooped to a room next to the hospital. The carapace had grown to two hundred Neruk.
“Prof., once we have done what we can for Seka, we hope to acquire a new Neruk. Ours died in a fire. We want to do so with the descendants of our old Neruk,” said David. “We miss our Neruk!”
Kreia smiled and nodded. “Do you want us to help you get them in your nose?”
“No, we will relax and let them go where they will,” said Ashlyn. “We trust them implicitly.”
“If we can fix Seka, I want to sort out Anayees Parnok,” said Brendan.
“Why would you want to fix that awful woman?” Ashlyn asked, her eyebrows raised and eyes wide.
“I want to take her back to face her crimes,” said Brendan. “We’ve dealt with her henchmen, but the instigator has not faced justice.”
“I’ve spoken with the Neruk and the Brainiac from the planet below us. They had little to add to the technique we use. If you get into trouble, I will help you if I can,” said Keresen, then waved the others to lie on couches provided by Kreia.
“You may return Seka to consciousness. As soon as she becomes aware of you, enter her mind. She will not be able to resist, and the creature will be unprepared,” Keresen advised.
“Could there be more creatures?” Ashlyn asked.
“We’ve never seen it happen,” said Keresen. “If that is the case, separate and gang up on the malign ones. Give them no quarter. Don’t hesitate. It will otherwise manipulate you to submit.”
