Did he have a way to cut or burn his way out? Could he transport himself one level upward? Should he try to move out of his body? No, he couldn’t leave his body behind.
The door opened. A shuffling sound was coming closer. Brendan tried to shoot a fireball, but his hands were trapped. The ball formed, burned the side of his leg, and then exploded against the wall. Shit, that was sore. An imposing, hairy insect headed his way. Brendan was trapped.
‘Hey, be careful,’ said the creature, ‘you’ll damage this place.’
‘I’m sorry, but you wrapped me up, and I expected you to eat me. There are some hellish dangerous creatures in here!’
‘If I wanted to harm you, I would have paralyzed you before wrapping you in silk. You were shivering with cold, so I created a cocoon. There was nothing else handy. It’s not cold in here. Why were you shivering?”
‘What manner of insect are you?’ Brendan asked, tearing the burned silk and loosening both hands.
In a flash, the insect was at his side. ‘I am not an insect; I am a spider! Here, I’ll get it off you.’
Brendan didn’t know whether to try to fight or to relax and let the creature do its work.
It sprayed something on the silk from its abdomen and then peeled it away from Brendan’s body.
“Thank you. I was cold because I healed myself after an enormous wild critter tore into me with its claws, and then I was sleepy. I should have eaten after I healed, but I fell asleep. I was shivering because I was metabolizing myself to power the healing. I don’t know how it works, but that is its gist. How do you understand me?’
‘I am speaking to you telepathically. Anyone who is telepathic can understand it.’
‘What manner of Spider are you that you didn’t eat me?’
The Spider laughed.
‘I am a vegetable and fruit-eating spider. None of my species eat insects or meat. How did you injure yourself?’
“I didn’t injure myself. I opened the door you came through, and a creature with claws shrieked and clawed me.”
“Did you knock before you opened the door?”
“No, I didn’t. Should I have done so?”
“Yes, it is polite, and we expect such behavior if you visit our homes. If someone hideously ugly suddenly entered your home, a creature the likes of which you had never seen, what would you have done? Murgh is usually pleasant but tends to be neurotic and overreact to the unusual.”
Brendan felt like an unwitting guest actor in a Monty Python movie.
“Should I apologize?” Brendan asked. “I didn’t realize I looked so ugly.”
“No, not at present; she was frightened and upset. I settle her down; we’ll let her calm down. She thought you were ugly and terrifying. I have never met a being who looks like you. Most here would find you unusual.”
“Where is this place?” Brendan asked.
“As I previously mentioned, you visited our home. From what frame of reference should I describe where we are?” Asked the Spider. “Where did you come from?”
“I was spending some time with an ant species, about your size, called the XaX on the planet Uyskeczbek in the capital Colrac,” said Brendan. “Then I went to a ceremony on another planet where we had psychedelic drinks. Then I found myself in a maze.”
“Your condensed story makes little sense. I’ll take you to get something to eat. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for you metabolizing yourself. I’ll introduce you to our local Council,” said the Spider leading the way. “My name is Keresen. I have many other names, but as Keresen is common, you can identify me as Keresen Iudprost. We are called the Algedi and have been around for billions of years.”
“I am called Brendan Murphy, and I don’t have any other names. I am a biped of a species called humans and was with a large group of bipeds called the Paradigm. On the planet I come from, we only became sentient a hundred thousand years ago.”
“Brendan, what level of development did you get up to?” Keresen asked as they entered a wide-open space. There were many beings, none Brendan recognized. Most were insects, but there were small dinosaurs of different sizes and several reptiles, primarily lizards. Several lizards wore bright-colored, ornate clothing, as did a group of tyrannosauruses. There were other restaurants around the periphery of the space and in its center. Many stood eating. Some sat at tables on boat seats, cushions, and bench seats.
“We could produce nuclear power, venturing into space using chemical rockets.”
Keresen led Brendan to a raised area in the center to join a mixed group. Keresen introduced Brendan to a tyrannosaurus his size, another twice his size, a lizard, a frog, and a snake with two small arms. A large bird resembling a raptor joined them, apologizing for being late.
Brendan looked up. Two suns, one larger than the other, lit the sky, and a swirl of shining white mist between them lit the sky. Near the horizon, a red moon was visible.
“Are we underground on a planet or a ship?” Brendan asked.
“Neither,” said the larger tyrannosaurus. “This is a construct. You see us as representations of our bodies. Do you understand?”
“No, not really; it is not something I have heard of,” said Brendan.
“Brendan comes from Earth, only recently aware. He is visiting an ant society called the XaX,” said Keresen. “His planet could produce chemical rockets and nuclear power.”
