It must’ve been a dream.
But no, bodies were piled everywhere. They were all naked. David lay in a pile with Dorel, Ashlyn, and Makuto.
Brendan lay close to Imra, Atra, Messa, and Dridget. He was too tired to move a muscle but felt marvelous. He was thirsty and hungry. Brendan carefully extracted himself from the pile and shakily pulled himself up using the back of the bench. The table was back in place. A feast of steaming dishes was on the table. He felt chilly, and the outside door was wide open. Brendan looked for his clothes and dressed.
David joined him at the table, followed by the others a few minutes later.
“Ashlyn, you feel distressed?” Asked Dorel.
Ashlyn burst into tears. David put his arm around her. “What is it?”
“I don’t know. Yes, I do. Last night, I felt like I was XaX, and it felt like a dream. I was free and flying in a gorgeous starry sky. I was more aroused than I ever had been before. I coupled with two other males after you. I was wild and full of abandon. I could not resist. They had a smell that drew me in. This morning I smell like I have been in an orgy. I don’t even know who I was with. I wanted to consummate my relationship with David first. We’ve been wanting to get together but never had the opportunity. Now I’ve messed everything up.”
“Last night was the night we flew. Queens mate with many kings. We cannot control what happens; the smell of suitable males draws us,” said Messa. “We will have sufficient male essence to lay eggs for many years. Our males used to die after the mating flight. Today, they survive a few hundred years, but few remain healthy despite everything we can do. They lose much of who they are when they give life to us. Our males are half our size. Do you know we share much of the same DNA despite looking different?”
Ashlyn shook her head. “Yes, I know. I was surprised.”
“What distressed you so much about last night?” asked Dridget.
“I don’t like to think of myself as promiscuous. I don’t want to have a child with another man!”
“Ashlyn, last night you were a XaX Queen, not a mammalian woman. You will lay thousands and thousands of eggs with us, fathered by many males,” said Dorel. “You can still consummate your relationship with David as a woman. You have lost nothing. You’ve gained another rich, parallel life. As a mammal, you have few children. I understand how you feel, but you are now both. Are you also concerned about David’s behavior?”
“I thought I would be, but I know we were not responsible for our actions, and he would not usually behave as he did. I also like and respect you, Dorel, and I don’t feel he betrayed me.”
“Would you object to David having a human child with me?” Dorel asked.
“I don’t know. Something about you makes me feel we are sharing as sisters. I feel the same with Makuto. I do not feel comfortable being out of control and having wild sex. Why would you want to?” Ashlyn asked.
“That is our nature. However, we have another serious problem evolving over many years. Fewer males than ever are being born. If we mate with them a second time, they die. Also, many of the offspring are defective,” said Dorel.
“I suspect there was a prophecy about last night,” David smiled. “We will start a new generation that is both XaX and human.”
“When the doctors used your DNA as a base to grow your XaX form, they said they believed you were growing to be bigger and stronger than our males. Brendan fertilized four women; you, David, did three. Your parents participated in similar rituals and also did well. They all wanted an XaX form. That gained them entry into the ritual. The refugee group shared a similar wish, and so far, we have donated a XaX body to ten percent of them. We will do the same for all of them in time. According to the prophecy, we will each make the other more robust,” said Messa.”
“Ashlyn, you behaved as a XaX Queen; there is no place for shame in what you did,” said Dorel.
“As XaX, we do not love as you do. The sexual act is pleasurable, but we do not form relationships with our males as you do,” said Messa. “It would be too painful losing them.”
“I can fully understand it in its historical context. The males used to die, and now they don’t live long lives. I wonder if it will change now as we are different,” said David.
“Did the prophecy predict how we would behave, who would fertilize whom?” Brendan asked.
“Our attraction to a male is entirely dependent on his pheromones. I knew we would land together from the first time I met David. The others felt the same way about Brendan.”
“How long will it be before I start laying eggs?” Ashlyn asked.
“Ashlyn, it will take you three months to begin laying eggs. The workers look after the eggs you lay,” said Messa, “and older queens take care of their education. We lay hundreds of thousands of eggs. You can concurrently have human children.”
“Will both be able to change?” David asked.
“Yes, we think so,” said Dorel. “We will soon know, and we will also evaluate the quality of the offspring.”
“Did you offer the conversion to the Councilors?” Brendan asked.
