Chapter 42: Recovery is Slow

Tamerlan Gazdanty leaned over the medical tube as Imra introduced him to Brendan for the first time.
‘Councilor Gazdanty, I am honored to meet you,’ said Brendan telepathically. ‘I am sorry I don’t have the energy to speak.’
“Brendan, you are family; please call me Tame. Communicate as it suits you. Formality is unnecessary between us unless we are in a stuffy setting.”
Tamerlan smiled. He was a tall, handsome man, distinguished-looking, with a prominent nose and long white hair. His smile was crooked, and his eyebrows were bushy and thick, joining in the middle of his forehead. His manner was charming and gentle. This was a different beast, so much unlike Adaobi!
Tamerlan stepped back, and Adaobi stepped forward. “Brendan, I am genuinely sorry for how I clumsily tried to protect you and your friends. You can call me Ada; most of the family does.”
‘Ada, in retrospect, you did the right thing. None of us could have acted well enough to fool the Admiral. I doubt the other experts could have solved the language problem, and the Admiral was itching to attack the XaX. You are not responsible for the state we find ourselves in. What are your impressions of the XaX and the plan the girls proposed?’
“The long-term plan is sound. The short-term plan risked the Council’s ire,” said Tame. “We will make sure we present it in a way that will succeed and enjoy the full support of the Council. We must first run a public relations exercise. It will delay things in one way and speed them up in another. We must also introduce other friendly parties to participate in the project. We cannot be seen to hog all the deal’s benefits.”
“Tame is a past master in the art of whetting the appetite of the Council,” said Ada. “You asked about our impressions of the XaX.”
Ada smiled at Brendan.
“They are an extraordinary society, free of crime and even the concept of crime. It is authoritarian but much more benign in its operation than the Paradigm. The XaX are polite, yet without guile, modest but capable. Like us, they reached a crossroads and became stuck. Unlike us, they recognized the problem and patiently looked for a solution. The more time Tame and I spend here, the more we realize how stuck we are. The XaX established a relationship with the Brainiac in their infancy and followed its guidance.”
‘Ada, your eyes glint; you are planning something,’ Brendan smiled.
“The XaX and the Paradigm can be very good for each other, and I am thinking about how we may move forward. If we are not careful, it will become a monumental disaster.”
“Tame, what is your opinion of the XaX?” Brendan asked.
“I like them and cannot believe I am fond of creatures resembling the XaX. I feel protective of them and want to keep the predators from the Paradigm at bay. At the same time, as we move forward with them, we must harden the XaX to the manipulations of many of us. I fully agree that we must run a pilot and exchange program for students. We will court disaster if we begin large-scale trade before each side knows the other better,” said Tame. “Ada and I are working on giving them the best commercial legal system, the lawyers, and products we can produce. Ada and I have brought in our top people to work with the lawyers. We’ve sent eighty percent of the previous lot home and brought in ones we know can work quickly.”
“How are the XaX coping?” Brendan asked.
“They are frighteningly fast workers. Teams of workers and a much smaller group of queens are working with the lawyers. They have superb AI support, and they are quick learners,” said Tame. “It will take the XaX queens a year to be at the level of our lawyers just out of training. Our lawyers suggested setting up a practice here and working with the XaX on their affairs. They see a massive opportunity.”
‘That sounds like a great idea,’ said Brendan.
“They must review the first draft of the peace agreement and the trade agreement, though Ada and I have done most of the work. There is a long way to go between the first draft and a completed agreement,” said Tame. “I want them to be satisfied the agreements reflect what they want.”
“Brendan, I believe you are coming out of the tube tomorrow?” Imra asked.
‘Yes, I can come out for half an hour.’
Brendan turned to Tame and Ada. I want you to see the whole holovid of what happened to us. I want to know if you have ever seen anything like it. The XaX withheld that section, and when I saw the holovid here yesterday, I agreed with them. Imra and Atra have seen the whole thing.”
Ada nodded. “I want to see how they put you together again.”
“No, gran, it’s before that. The XaX won’t yet tell us what they did medically,” said Atra.
“I am intrigued,” said Ada.
‘Ada, what do we know of the assassins?’ Brendan asked.
“The Council ordered them to reverse the contract, and when they refused, we declared the Guild a renegade and a terrorist organization. A few escaped, but we captured most. We did not eliminate all risks, but we reduced them. We will ensure you have guards on the ship. The assassins are relentless, and undoubtedly, those commissioned to kill you were not at the guild,” said Ada.
