“Brendan, I don’t want to speak to my grandmother. I told her I wouldn’t speak to her again after you were so badly injured. I blamed her for everything bad that happened to you, even what Anayees did. I told her the Council was the scum of the Paradigm and should be terminated. She just sat there with crocodile tears coming out of her eyes,” said Atra. “How can I go back after that? Surely we can deal with Imra’s grandpa?”
‘You must give yourself a way to save face, and you must give her a way to help you,’ said Brendan. ‘Think about it, and I also will. I can’t do any more this afternoon.’
Atra and Imra returned to Atra’s family yacht.
“I don’t know what to do,” said Atra. “Do any of you have any ideas?”
“Somehow, you must get your grandmother on the back foot and make her feel she must help you,” said Peter.
“If I ask her, she’ll help me, but there will be something festering in me and guilt in her. Not that I believe she knows the meaning of guilt.”
“All of this is unlike anything we are accustomed to,” said the hospitality Queen, “I don’t feel qualified to contribute. I do have one thought. Can you tell her Brendan ordered you to approach her? Will that make a difference in this complex situation?”
“He did say I must do it, but something is missing. Imra, what do you think?”
“I agree with Brendan. If you ask my grandpa and not her, she will never forgive you. Grandpa is not a grand strategist like your grandma. He is the guy who will draft something and support you. Someone needs to have the ideas to put the other Councilors off balance and push through your plan. Your grandma would love to help you. She wants to resolve matters with you.”
“Can’t you just talk to her, resolve things with her and move on?” Sarah asked. “Forgive her; you will feel better.”
“I am so angry with her I can hardly speak when I think of her and her underhand behavior,” said Atra. “She can’t treat her family like her puppets.”
“Brendan told me once that his mentor spent considerable time with him, educating him on how to survive the politics of the church. His mentor said if he was to rise in the ranks, it was essential. Atra, none of us are politicians. I regret we don’t have more useful advice.”
The others nodded.
Atra sighed loudly. “Imra, let us talk with the Supreme Queen. We have much to discuss.”
She turned to the parents. “I hope you have another successful program today and have as much fun as in the last sessions. The chef loves the attention and the fame. Maybe I can license the concept to the Paradigm.”
“Brendan, we are stuck. One of our illustrious consultants suggested we blame you!”
‘Yes, but it is how you blame me. You want Adaobi to feel guilty and apologize first. She loves you and wants to reconcile. If she helps you, she knows your parents will also resume a normal relationship with her. This deal will help your family and make a difference to her; what’s not to like from her perspective? A new trading partner she introduces is another win for her on the Council.’
“What should Atra say?” Imra asked.
‘Contact her and say you want to come back and meet with her, bringing Imra. Say no more. Let her worry. She’ll ask your father. Tell him to say he doesn’t know and tell her nothing.’
Brendan closed his eyes.
‘When you see her with Imra, say how angry you are, but Brendan pushed you from his sick bed. Hold your hands over the baby as you speak. Pause dramatically. If you can be tearful, do so. Please think of how I was when you first heard what happened. Say you want to talk to her confidentially. Get her hooked. You want her to apologize somewhere along the line, so a few pauses are good. You want her to be uncertain about what is coming. Say you have an opportunity that is potentially beneficial for both families. Brendan said you are to ask Adaobi’s advice. You are uncertain because Imra’s grandfather could help, but she has an edge, and this problem requires her skills.’
Imra laughed, and after a moment, Atra joined her. “Brendan, I never realized you had some remarkable hidden talents.”
