Brendan woke. Was it a nightmare? He sat up. He couldn’t feel his body but saw the fight raging nearby. He looked down. He was lying on the ground, the flesh falling off his bones as he examined his body. He couldn’t hear anything. Could he use telepathy? He could listen to the network, but his Neruk was dying. He said farewell to Naugough and thanked him for all he had done. Naugough died as he thanked him. Ashlyn and David were dead; he could feel it. Reessu and Shonshash, the Neruks, were also dying.
Would David and Ashlyn leave their bodies as he had done? What could he do to help the XaX? Could Brendan walk, fly or jump? He noticed a splat of blood next to a column and transported himself instantly. He gazed around the room.
Several XaX soldiers pointed to him. They called to others. Brendan pointed to the melee, and the XaX rushed forward.
A Drunduh with a body like a wild boar was directing the battle. Brendan willed himself to leap to a clear spot near the Drunduh. He touched his hand to the Drunduh’s head and attacked him with all he had. The Drunduh tried to fight him but dropped to the ground, writhing, then was still. The XaX saw Brendan and fought harder. The Drunduh noticed Brendan, and two charged him.
Brendan noticed XaX soldiers clustered around Ashlyn’s and David’s bodies. At the last minute, he leaped to stand next to David. David was sitting up, as was Ashlyn.
‘We’re dead, Ashlyn and David, but we can fight telepathically. Look at a spot, and you can jump there. I jumped slightly behind one of the Drunduh, put my hand next to his head, and directly attacked him with all I had. He dropped dead.’
XaX clustered around them. Brendan pointed to the melee. ‘They see us, and we inspire them. Let’s play vengeful killer ghost and inspire the XaX,’ said David, ‘I don’t have anything better to do.’
‘Come on; I see some workers wandering around. Let’s sort them out and inspire the XaX around the ship. Then we’ll see if we go to heaven or hell,’ said Ashlyn. ‘Brendan, now is not the time to discuss how the Paradigm got it wrong.’
Ashlyn killed the zombie queen and redirected the workers to attack the Drunduh. Meanwhile, David and Brendan killed several Drunduh. Whenever the XaX saw them, they enthusiastically reentered the fray.
‘Let’s see what happened in the control room,’ said David. ‘First, I am going to look for another weapon. This is too slow. I want to kill these suckers in bulk.’
Brendan found a yellow shining ax, David a green sword, and Ashlyn an emerald green one.
The control room was in shambles, boat seats kicked aside and broken, bodies everywhere, and most of the command team dead husks on the floor. There were several injured and exhausted soldiers fighting equally tired and injured Drunduh.
Brendan, Ashlyn, and David began a killing spree and turned the tide of the battle. Their weapons had powerful beams and also pulsed black lightning. When reinforcements arrived, the trio left to support the XaX where needed. They hopped around the ship, seeing far more of it than they had seen on tour. Soon, reinforcements were pouring in and mopping up the last Drunduh. They felt drawn to their bodies.
XaX soldiers were carefully scooping their remains onto the XaX version of a stretcher on an antigravity puller. Their original guide was directing the operation.
‘Hey, look, there is that white light thingie, just like you see it in the movies,’ said Ashlyn, pointing to a beam of light from above.
The young Queen noticed them and waved. ‘Thank you. The battle is over in space, but it continues on the planet. Thank you for what you have done; we will remember you.’ She bent her knees in acknowledgment and continued directing the others.
‘We wish you and the XaX well,’ said Brendan. ‘You are a fine people.’
The Queen looked up, startled.
‘The Supreme Queen and her senior Queens are all dead. I am so sorry. We failed. I am also sorry your younger sister also died. She fought heroically. We hope your people can recover from this setback,’ said Brendan.
‘Thank you for supporting us in our hour of need. My mother and the senior Queens made me her successor; farewell for now.’
Brendan, Ashlyn, and David moved to the white light and looked up. Brendan felt blissful and then laughed when he heard harp music. He, however, remained in place.
‘Nothing is happening,” said Ashlyn. ‘This sucks; we can see the way, but don’t float up. I could be relaxing on a cloud and talking to Grandpa about his rental in heaven.’
‘It’s probably like all bureaucratic organizations. Someone is on a tea break, or they don’t have the right paperwork, and we must go to another department,’ said David.
Ashlyn and Brendan laughed.
‘I wonder what we are; we aren’t regular ghosts,’ said Brendan.
‘Have you noticed gravity does nothing to us?’ David said, lifting his legs off the ground and floating.
‘Could we zip back to the Admiral’s ship?’ Ashlyn asked.
‘Maybe, but what if we land up nowhere? Let’s hang around this light for a while and see what happens,’ said Brendan. ‘I am in no hurry to go traipsing around.’
They remained near the light for some time. ‘How long have we been hanging around here?’ Ashlyn asked.
‘Sorry, I can’t tell you; my watch was burned, and I left my cube in my pocket,’ said Brendan. ‘I’ve been meditating to pass the time. I don’t feel like talking. I hate to leave Atra and Imra behind and not see my children. I’m going to miss my parents terribly.’
