“Bring Brendan Murphy here immediately and fetch my punisher!” Shrieked Councilor Anayees Yarinkalosa Parnok — so loudly Brendan heard her through the door.
Sgt. Uchu Ennid quietly opened Brendan’s door and moved lithely, leopard-like, over to his bed. “It is time, mistress calls.”
Brendan nodded. “At least it will soon be over.”
“The Councilor was never previously like this. We guards are experiencing a side of her we have never seen before. I can see no good coming of this for her, you, and us.”
Brendan padded behind Uchu and into the Councilor’s room.
“There he is — finally, he shows up.”
“Councilor, can you explain what we have done to you and why you want to punish us.”
“I don’t need to explain anything to you, scum. The Neruk were mine. I wanted to see you primitives die or go crazy, and I could blame that arrogant bastard Fryson Drayib for the mess. He was always a pretentious prick. The others passed uneventfully; it was so dull; none went mad. I was disappointed. There was no drama I could show the Council. Then you miserable creatures come along and allegedly discover the Neruk are sentient, and not only that, they can speak telepathically. I know it is all lies, but I could announce it as a victory, and then Seka would expose you as liars and pretenders.”
“Why punish Ashlyn?”
“She is the cause of my trouble. Your disgusting sister, cursed be her name, has a punishable face, and she looked so smug. She provoked me by looking at my face. Who is she to gaze upon my countenance with her fat lips and a provocative pout? You look like one of my exes. He left me for a raven-haired blue-skinned bitch — I loathe women with blue skin.”
Parnok brandished the neuro-shocker in her violently shaking hand. She stabilized it with her other hand.
“See what you have done to me, you self-satisfied mongrel. Stop looking at my hand. I don’t need your pity or your fake compassion.”
“So, what is your current problem with us?”
“You half-wit, you have poisoned the mind of Seka. She refuses to prove you lied. You and your sister, with a smack-able face, cursed me. Look at what you have done to me. You dared to launch a complaint against me. You are primitive nothings; I will do with you as I wish. Once I leave this infernal ship, I will make sure you die a miserable death. It is what you deserve for your insolence. You dare to make rash medical claims against me, a councilor. You manipulate the medical and scientific councilors and put yourself out of my reach, you miserable cur. Now you spout new garbage. You are sneaky and underhanded. You and Seka created a new monster, a machine to be my nemesis. Did you put something in her drink? Did you hypnotize her with your big, sad eyes?”
Councilor Parnok stopped her tirade. She sat on the bed panting, her eyes wide — swaying like a drunken sailor, her face pale. Suddenly, she projectile vomited, spewing all over the bed and floor coverings. Her guards ran to help her.
“Get that animal out of here; he’s made me sick. Take me to the cleanser and get the mess cleaned up.”
Brendan walked back to the other room and shut the door.
A half-an-hour later, Sgt. Uchu Ennid entered the room and carefully shut the door.
“Brendan, she asked us to kill you.”
“Uchu, she is your boss; I don’t like it, but you gotta do what you gotta do. It’s not entirely unexpected. Where do you want me, on the bed or standing up?”
“You can remain on the bed.”
“Do you want me to look at you or look away?”
“Brendan, stop talking. I have a question for you. What do you want for lunch?”
“Is it better to die with a full stomach or without?”
