Chapter 20: The Investigators
Science Fantasy Sex Story: Chapter 20: The Investigators - Three young people represent Earth in a battle with our powerful ancestors who seeded us and terraformed Earth. It is a battle against people who believe Earth has lost its way, and they intend to destroy Earth if it does not comply. The next day shortly before lunch, Prof. Shohsukit was in discussion with the small seminar class in which Brendan was participating when she received a call. She pulled out her cube. Then she grimaced and announced: “there is a small group of investigators who have come to the ship to evaluate our progress. They intend to work out how someone injured Councilor Anayees Yarinkalosa Parnok. These people intend to speak with each of you. I strongly suggest you cooperate with them. Go and have lunch; I’ll send you a timetable of when you will see the investigators and where. They will start interviews after lunch. Classes will resume after they have completed the interviews.”
“How are you feeling, Ash?” David asked.
“I feel fine, but I am too weak to walk around. Silicaa tried rehabilitation, but it didn’t help. I get up and walk around for five minutes every hour. It’s as much as I can do,” said Ashlyn.
“I’ve done it again, David!” Ashlyn announced triumphantly.
“Before you tell me what amazing feat you achieved, I have something that can’t wait. Did you know there is a group of investigators who are going to interview us all?” David asked.
“Kreia sent me a message an hour ago. I refuse to worry about it,” said Ashlyn brightly.
“Now tell me what you’ve done and what new disaster you are cooking up!” David asked with a smile.
“I’ve had tons of time to myself and practiced my lessons. I can hear the spirits clearly and distinctly and speak with them without difficulty. I was so excited I nearly wet myself! I offered them the language of the Paradigm. My AI tried to download it to them, unsuccessfully. I thought about it for a few hours before I suggested the AI send the language through me while I was in the correct state of consciousness.”
“So, don’t hold me in suspense; what happened?”
“It worked; they can speak with us.”
“Well, what did you talk about?”
“They wanted to know more about us and the Paradigm. I sent the beings everything I have on the history of the Paradigm. I also told them what happened with the Councilor. I haven’t had time to tell them about what happened on Earth.”
“How did they react?” David asked.
“They just listened.” Ashlyn took a call and looked at her cube. “The investigators intend to interview me directly after lunch.”
David looked at the hologram when Ashlyn turned towards him. “I’m on at the same time. I’d better run and get some lunch; I’m famished.”
David met up with Brendan in the canteen. “Bren, what time are you seeing the investigators?”
“Directly after lunch. What about you?”
“I’m seeing them at the same time. I popped in to see Ashlyn a few minutes ago. They are seeing her concurrently with me. Are you worried, Bren?”
“I know it is a potential minefield, but I am confronting my fears. I don’t know what changed, but I refuse to give in. When I volunteered to take Ashlyn’s punishment, I blurted it out without thinking it through. Still, I didn’t feel terrified even though I knew that sadist would punish me. Everything we do or don’t do rebounds on us, and their reactions are extreme. I refuse to allow these people to mess up my life. We must learn the explicit and implicit rules in this crazy society before we find ourselves on the tracks of another train.”
“I know what you mean. These bastards will try to blame us regardless of the evidence,” said David. “I’m finishing my drink and heading off to meet with the investigators.”
“Me too; I’ll walk with you,” said Brendan. They finished the juice in companionable silence and walked together, deep in thought.
“I am investigator Bingill Milgrull, the lead investigator on this case. Today, my colleague Thehmied Ziquets assists. Can you confirm you are Brendan Murphy, a student in the developmental stream?”
“Investigator Milgrull, I can confirm that I am Brendan Murphy.”
“You were a priest and a believer in a God before you came onto the ship. Is that true?”
“That is true, and I was disappointed to discover we believed the people of the Paradigm were Gods. I subsequently learned that Paradigm seeded us, and they are an advanced society. I was at the start of my career, and it was no more. I’m sure you can imagine how disappointed I was. However, the Paradigm allowed me to make a new life on the ship. I intend to take advantage of that opportunity.”
“You did not accept you were homosexual, and after the death of your friend, you wanted to end your life?”
“That is true; I could not accept myself as homosexual. You probably know the doctors changed my orientation.”
“Do you detest homosexuals?”
“No, I don’t have any issues with homosexuals; it just didn’t suit me.”
“What was the problem?”
“I wanted to be attracted to women, and I want to have children and a family. My parents have a great marriage. I wanted the same.”
“How long have you known David Cohen?”
“I’ve known David my whole life. He is as close as a brother.”
“Is he in a relationship with your sister?”
“They are close but are not intimate as far as I know. I would be happy if David and Ashlyn got together. They didn’t get closer because of religious differences; however, those differences are now irrelevant.”
“Can you describe how you know Councilor Anayees Yarinkalosa Parnok?”
“The first time I met Prof. Dr. Fryson Drayib, a Council representative and my prospective mentor, he demanded I prove Neruk along with David. My sister volunteered to do the same. Councilor Parnok and two other Councilors came to the ship to bring Neruk cysts and adjudicate. She was not happy that my sister had volunteered and, after the process, informed us that she would return. When she returned, she decided to punish my sister. I volunteered to accept punishment on Ashlyn’s behalf. The Councilor decided to punish us both.”
“What happened?”
“We didn’t think it was fair and appealed to the entities we encountered recently. We hoped the Councilor would reconsider.”
“Did the Councilor reconsider?”
“No, she didn’t. Councilor Parnok approached Ashlyn and shoved the device she held onto her shoulder. Ashlyn shrieked and shortly after became unconscious. The Councilor then became agitated and complained she was in pain. Her security people took her to the hospital.”
“Do you believe the entities hurt the Councilor or perhaps the Neruk?”
“I asked the entities if they acted on our appeal. They told me they could only hear us if we were in the correct state of consciousness. I didn’t ask the Neruk. Why don’t you ask them yourself telepathically? The one in me is called Naugouh.”
‘Naugouh, did you intervene on behalf of Brendan?’ Bingill Milgrull asked telepathically.
‘No, I can protect myself from Brendan, not the Councilor.’
“Thank you, Naugouh. Brendan, did you try to harm the Councilor?”
“No, I am not crazy. There were heavily armed guards cloaked behind us.”
“What powers do you have?”
“I don’t understand. Can you please explain investigator Milgrull?”
“Can you attack a person telepathically?”
“I learned how to fight a Neruk so I could prove Neruk. All the students who tried to prove Neruk died. We accepted our Neruk. The instructors left out a critical component of proving Neruk.”
“Can you please explain?”
“David researched what was done years ago. He discovered the students imbibed a psychedelic substance before they attacked the Neruk. He discovered the psychedelic confuses and weakens the Neruk. Some of Neruk went into shock and released massive amounts of neurotransmitters as they lost control. The neurotransmitter overload killed some students and made others psychotic. That is why only a quarter of the students survived. They didn’t prove Neruk, the chemical agent the teachers gave, did the job. Our Neruk agreed to leave us when they completed teaching us. They will live in an environment the engineers created for them.”
Milgrull looked at Ziquets and raised her eyebrows. Ziquets shrugged her shoulders and grimaced before speaking. “You admit you have hostile feelings towards the Paradigm?”
“Surely the spy I have inside me can tell you what I think and feel?”
“We like to ask our questions,” said Thehmied Ziquets. “Please answer the question.”
“I am doing my best to adapt. I have positive and negative feelings. I observe the behavior of the Paradigm, and I try to understand it. I don’t know the rules, but they differ from how I was educated. I enjoy learning, and I am learning plenty. I have an excellent pair of girlfriends. The course is excellent, and I like the other students. I am not happy that the Councilor punished Ashlyn. As a result of the risk Ashlyn took, she has made a major contribution to the Paradigm. Ashlyn discovered that the Neruk were sentient. She taught Narral to the Neruk, and that means anyone in the Paradigm who can get into Wozo Bud may speak with the Neruk or the entities. Ashlyn also gave Narral to the entities/spirits who live in that dimension. We can talk with them as could you. Our sense of what we knew, to be fair, is different here. What would the Paradigm gain by punishing Ashlyn?”
“We have our rules.”
“Funny about that,” said Brendan, “I spoke to the AI on the ship, and she told me after consulting with the Judge AI the Councilor’s actions are illegal. None of us could argue with a Councilor. The ship AI considers we should be accorded a remedy. She left the matter in the hands of the Judge Advocate.”
“What did the ship provide as evidence?”
“We provided our account of what happened to the ship when we asked our question. The ship accessed the holovids and provided them to the Judge Advocate and the judge AI.”
The investigators looked at each other.
“How do you believe the Councilor received a neuro-shock?” Ziquets asked.
“I don’t know; I could not see where and how the Councilor struck Ashlyn’s shoulder. I don’t know how the device works. I wouldn’t mind looking at the holovids. We don’t have security access, so we can’t access them. Have you already looked at what happened?” Brendan asked, looking from one to the other.
“We cannot comment on information we have collected.”
“David believes she shocked herself. I saw her shove the device forcefully towards Ashlyn’s shoulder, much like a punch.” — Brendan demonstrated the movement — “Ashlyn had a huge bruise and a hematoma in the muscle. David thinks the Councilor’s hand slipped off the handle and onto the prong below the handle.”
“Do people on your planet have powers?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Create fire and throw it, lift objects telekinetically, throw ice shards or lightning, and so on?”
“We read about that sort of thing in stories. Do you have people with powers?”
“Most in the Paradigm develop powers. The power comes from different dimensions,” Milgrull explained.
“Is that something we might be able to learn?” Brendan asked. “We learned telepathy and telekinesis.”
“Bropter Shikase measured your potential. It is on the shallow side of the scale,” said Thehmied Ziquets. “You will develop weak powers.”
Ziquets looked at Milgrull. “This is the start of our investigation. You have compounded your problems by bringing them to the ship’s attention. I suggest you consider a retraction and throw yourself at the mercy of the Councilor.”
“We will do our best to do as you advise. How is the Councilor?”
“Councilor Parnok is making excellent progress. She is almost back to normal,” said Bingill Milgrull.
Brendan nodded sagely; he didn’t believe a word of it.
