Chapter 18: The Daily Grind

Science Fantasy Sex Story: Chapter 18: The Daily Grind - Three young people represent Earth in a battle with our powerful ancestors who seeded us and terraformed Earth. It is a battle against people who believe Earth has lost its way, and they intend to destroy Earth if it does not comply. They are so far ahead of us that they are Godlike but are biased and irrational and prepared to inflict pain without compunction.

Ashlyn and David had almost finished breakfast when a bleary-eyed Brendan joined them at the table, rubbing his eyes.

Ashlyn looked at him up and down. “You missed the gym!”

“Yeah, Imra, let me off. I went back last night for a second session, and she pushed me way past my limits.”

“I thought you were going for dinner afterward; what happened?” David asked.

“When I finished the exercise session, I was even more tired than in the morning. Imra said I should skip today as I wouldn’t benefit from pushing too hard and fast.”

“Did you go for dinner?” Ashlyn asked.

Brendan nodded. “I felt better after the usual post-gym routine. We were just about to go to dinner when she got a call from engineering. They are working on a time-sensitive project. The evening shift landed up in the hospital as a gas leak poisoned them. Her boss called her to help until another team could take over in two hours.”

“Did you go to bed?” Ashlyn asked.

“Nope, she sent me to have dinner with her friend Atra Roxhollei. We had food that tasted a lot like Mexican.”

“Well, how did it go?” Ashlyn asked.

Brendan flushed a bright red. “She’s an engineer but in a different area. She’s known Imra for years.”

“We met Atra Roxhollei this morning, and she is stunning,” said David. “She said she was covering for Imra, who was tied up with a due project today.”

Brendan blushed. “I don’t want to talk about the date.”

“You don’t need to, Brendan; you told us what we need to know,” smirked Ashlyn.

“What time did you get to sleep?” David asked.

“After three in the morning.”

David and Ashlyn laughed.

“David, that was a low trick!” Brendan exclaimed, then grinned.

“We know you decided to change or add to your sexual interests,” said Ashlyn.

“Ashlyn, that is quite enough. Don’t you think you’ve embarrassed me enough?” Brendan asked.

“No, I don’t think I have embarrassed you enough. However, out of the goodness of my heart, I will let you off for the rest of the morning,” Ashlyn grinned.

“What are you guys doing today?” Brendan yawned.

“We are planning to start building a medical treatment bed. We must thoroughly understand how the machine operates and finish building it by the end of basic medical training,” said Ashlyn.

“When do they give you the AI that controls it?” Brendan asked.

“We already have it. She works with us throughout the project and learns everything as we learn it. We understand how to work with the medical AIs,” said David.

“Can assemble modules, or must you build the bed from scratch?”

“We don’t know yet, nor do any others know anything about constructing the machine. So first, we will take a course in engineering for medicine, and then we will begin making the bed. Concurrently, we are studying the basic science used in medicine. Paradigm genetics is unbelievably complex. It’s far ahead of everything I know; I cannot imagine how I will catch up,” said Ashlyn.

“How are you going with your program, Bren?” David asked.

“So far, it’s all history, and it’s dull. The Paradigm didn’t have shamans. They didn’t play around with psychedelics until long after we did on Earth. Naugouh is teaching me to speak his language. I’m practicing how to speak fluently. It reminds me of something, but I don’t know quite what it is,” said Brendan.

“Ashlyn and I also learned the language of the Neruk. I recognized some of the sounds from Aramaic and our work on the Kabbalah. Reessu, my Neruk, confirmed that some of our prayers and meditations led to changes in consciousness. He was excited when I told him about Aramaic and ancient Hebrew and compared similar words. Then, we had a long talk about how the shift from Aramaic to ancient Hebrew led to losing the ability to shift consciousness,” said David.

“What happened in your session with Prof. Seka Shohsukit?” Brendan asked.

“We tried to continue from where you left off, but unfortunately, the professor acted absent-minded — until she got engrossed in the story.” Ashlyn laughed. “She is paranoid about the impact this may have.”

“Funny you say that. The students from the Paradigm are reserved about saying what they think. They act as if there are spies everywhere,” said Brendan. “I think we must be careful.”

“The whole way the Paradigm operates reminds me of what I think China was like, but it’s way worse,” said Ashlyn.

“I don’t know enough to agree or disagree,” said David. “I’ve heard several people call this a cultivator ship. One of the students laughed and said they pruned a quarter of Earth’s population. When I asked them what happens to severely injured people in the Paradigm, they looked at me down their noses and walked away. Do they kill their own as they did with us? Is life cheap in the Paradigm?”
