“I’m not easily shocked. The aliens have put us on a treadmill,” said Sarah. “I don’t think they’ll release the pressure when they return in fifty years. After that, there will be a new list. What do you think, Siobhan?”

“I’m not worried about myself, but I’m not sure what life will be like if we can live in good health until we are two hundred years old. I’m most worried about you, Brendan; what do you think, Bren?” Siobhan asked.

Brendan shrugged. “These aliens turned my whole world inside out. I struggle to accept that what I believed for so long didn’t happen as I thought it did. I have a hole in myself, an emptiness I must fill. I struggle to accept these evil beings are giving us a dose of reality as they know it to be. I hate the picture they paint of themselves.”

“It must be uncomfortable?” said Samuel, frowning.

“It was a shock. I wanted to hold onto what I had. The explosions outside the Oort cloud told us there were aliens, and if we were to survive, we must learn to adapt and get stronger. It could have been worse. They might have been hostile and made attempts to kill us or enslave us all,” said Brendan.

“Are you saying anything more other than it’s bad but could have been worse?” Ashlyn asked.

“I am shocked but struggling to adapt,” said Brendan. “I can’t avoid this new future.”

“Have you clarified your thoughts about what you want to do?” Siobhan asked.

“I don’t want to go, but I feel I must. I want to learn about the Paradigm, and the ship is the best place to learn about these monsters. Yesterday, David suggested that I walk in their shoes. I imagined I was one of them. But, instead of being Brendan on Earth, I saw myself as ten thousand years old, traveling from planet to planet, observing the results of our work. I visualized my life in the Paradigm and realized I know nothing about why they do as they do,” said Brendan. “What awful traumas made them as harsh as they are. I also want to discover more about Jesus and discover what went wrong. I hope I can visit him and talk with him.”

David nodded. “I spent some time researching Shamanism. I knew nothing about it,” said David. “It helped me to understand how early man changed his thinking.”

“I did the same when I saw my supervisor. After I spent time with him talking about my recent experiences, I realized he is also one of the aliens,” said Brendan. “I like him. I think he is a fine person. I also like the Cardinal. How can I reconcile my feelings about them and those trumped-up beings on TV?”

“So, tell us what you discovered about Shamans; the suspense is killing me,” said Samuel, grinning. David, I thought you were busy with funerals. When did you find time to research these Shamans?”

“The incinerator had a problem, so I had two hours to research Shamanism. They used hallucinogenic drugs to alter their consciousness. They learned new things and new ways of thinking. I discovered shamans used hallucinogens to help spiritual development. They also learned about the planet and its fauna and flora. I knew nothing about mind-altering substances in religious practice,” said David. “What did you find out, Brendan?”

“My supervisor spoke enthusiastically about Shamanism, the role of drugs, and the evolution of the concepts of spirituality and transcendence. I found it fascinating. He told me they used hallucinogens in the church’s early years,” said Brendan.

Ashlyn laughed. “I asked my supervisor if he knew anything about Shamans. He sent me to see one of the Professors of Psychiatry from South America. He had half an hour before a meeting and briefly told me stuff similar to what you guys heard.”

“My supervisor told me the Old Testament cites cannabis,” Brendon contributed. “Drugs were used and subsequently forgotten in early Christianity. In the East, the earliest Hindu texts refer to natural hallucinogens. Some now call them entheogens. What else did your professor talk about, Ashlyn?”

“He told me how some of the substances discovered by the Shaman have applications in medicine.”

“That is interesting; tell me more,” said David.

“The professor was friendly with an anthropologist who entered the Amazon rainforests. His anthropologist friend says the witch doctors and medicine men believe spirits give them new knowledge. His friend collects some of the plants the medicine men use as psychoactive substances. Reputable universities are investigating many hallucinogens. He gave me papers to read on magic mushrooms for depression and MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder. Another friend of his was trialing Iboga in New Zealand. It is an African root that shuts off narcotic addiction.”
