Caleb
I woke to find a sheet over my face.
“Shit! We have a bleeder. Get a tourniquet on her. Do it now, or she’ll bleed out!”
’Where the fuck am I and why do I have a sheet covering me?” I thought.
I felt like total shit, just like when I joined lacrosse and had to go through hell week. Between the abuse and binge drinking, I’d almost flunked out. Now, my throat felt like someone had shoved a toilet brush down it, and every part of my body hurt, like I’d been in a car hit by a semi.
I tried to remember what had happened, but then I freaked out when not a single detail came to mind. For that matter, I couldn’t even remember who I was.
I could barely raise my hand to my chest to grasp the sheet and pull it off my face. Once I did that and could see, I had to shut my eyes because the overhead lights were blinding. I was in an emergency room, and I saw nurses running back and forth as they worked on the girl in the next bay. A curtain blocked the view of what was happening, but whatever it was didn’t sound good.
I tried to call out, but my voice wouldn’t work. The effort made me gag, which caught the attention of a nurse.
“The dead guy is alive!”
A doctor rushed in, looking haggard.
“I pronounced him twenty minutes ago.”
Chaos ensued.
That night, I was pronounced dead twice more before I came back for good. The problem I had was that I was no longer Caleb Jeffers—everything in my past had simply vanished. They told me I was Caleb because that’s what my driver’s license said.
