The clear blue skies expanded across the entire horizon. Not a cloud to be seen. The sunlight warmed him, blissfully enveloping him. The wind blew playfully through his fur. It was cold, and yet ... not. It was the perfect temperature. The crisp smell of fresh snow wafted on the breeze, tickling his nose. He stretched, his muscles pulling taut as He rolled his shoulders. His tongue lolled as He yawned.
The melody of the world embraced him. It all melded together. The tune He would never forget, etched into his heart as it called him here.
Home.
The sun bathed the white field in blinding light, but it didn’t bother him. A sense of belonging filled him. He gazed at the towering mountain behind him, his tail wagging. He loped through the snow, hopping between drifts. He playfully dove his maw into the powdery mix. It tingled his nose and snout. He shook it off. He ran. As much as he wanted.
He was free.
Kal opened his eyes. The drab white popcorn ceiling greeted him. That bare spot where he had hit his head while bouncing on the bed when he was ten stared back at him. It was all familiar, and yet ... not.
It was wrong.
The walls were too close. They were suffocating.
The ceiling too low, crushing down on him.
It was all wrong.
He wasn’t supposed to be here.
Chained.
Caged.
Icy fear gripped him as his panic grew, the edges of his vision darkening as he shook.
Gulping for breath, he clutched his chest. Unbidden tears burned down his cheeks.
Loss.
It was gone.
Something important.
Something he should have never lost.
A tune faded from his memories.
The fading memory of being happy.
Kal grit his teeth, curling into a ball, suppressing his choked cries.
“It’s okay, Kal.” Soft arms wrapped around him. The familiar tune hummed in his ears. “I’m here. You’ll never be alone.”
Like a comforting blanket, Kaylie’s words banished his shivering. They chased away those fleeting fears.
He was home.
He was safe.
With a deep breath, Kal calmed his racing heart. That comforting song, like a cozy blanket, wrapped him in warmth. Her flowery scent, like orange blossoms after a spring shower, called to mind all the tender moments they had shared.
He was home.
Kal sat beside the window, staring out into the streets, the blanket of fresh snow still pristine. Soon it would be a messy sludge as cars slid and drove through it. People would slip and curse, never taking the time to enjoy the beauty of it. It would be plowed and salted, used and discarded by afternoon. But for now? Now, it was still perfect. White and pure.
He had been feeling a lot better these days, with Hana and Kaylie fussing over him and practically spoon-feeding him. While he might grumble at their antics, it felt good to be home.
The early morning reverie came to an end at the sound of doors opening and floorboards creaking. There was too much shuffling, like someone too tired to lift their feet enough to clear the carpet, for it to be Hana. Besides, the smell of slowly baking bread was already wafting down the hall, so she was already in the kitchen. No, it could only be Melissa, already annoyed at having to wake up so early for her classes. That hint of spiciness to her scent confirmed it.
Not wanting to draw any attention, Kal remained motionless in the sitting room. With any luck, Melissa wouldn’t notice him.
The shuffling came to a halt.
“What are you doing up?” Even this early Melissa’s voice was grating. “Shouldn’t you be in bed playing the invalid.”
“Hi, Mel,” Kal said with an eyeroll, already preparing himself. “Sleep well?”
“Oh? Now you care?” she asked sarcastically, crossing her arms and glaring at him. “Didn’t seem to care last night while you were making a racket going up and down the hallway.”
Kal’s teeth creaked as he ground them.
“There’s only the one bathroom, Mel,” he said sweetly between clenched teeth. “And it’ll make more noise if I go downstairs.”
“Maybe we should bring you a bedpan then? Isn’t that what lazy bums use at the hospital?”
