Branches slashed Kal’s cheeks, leaving burning welts as he barreled through the darkened woods following the sound of fury and pain. His chest burned, his throat ragged at gulping down the cold air, but he ran on undeterred. Her scent lay heavy in the air, earthen and raw but still unmistakably hers. Unrestrained emotion tinged the smell; anger, confusion, and above all, pain.

He’d done this to her. It didn’t matter how or why ... he needed to find her.

The gibbous moon had risen high into the night sky, lighting the path of destruction before him. How long he’d been running he couldn’t say. His muscles ached, his lungs haggard, and still he pushed on. The lights and sounds of the town were a distant memory, now only the uncaring gaze of the moon to watch over him.

Branches snapped ahead of him at a dizzying pace, something large smashing through the foliage with no care for stealth. It had to be her. Her hoarse breath vibrated the air with every intake, pines shaking with every exhale in her wake.

“Natalie! Please! Stop!”

Kal’s cries went unheeded, a visceral snarl filled with rage his only response.

Trees cracked, her pace increasing as though driven by despair.

“Natalie!”

Exhaustion swallowed his steps like climbing through a quagmire, but still Kal drove on. Ignoring the burning that tore his muscles, Kal redoubled his efforts, shrubs and bushes flashing by as he leapt over downed logs and smashed through the underbrush. Blood flowed down his arms as he shielded his face, brambles and thorns tearing at him, never slowing him.

Whether desperation or something else drove him, his reserves never failed him, sprinting until the dark shape ahead came into view. She towered over young pines she swiped aside with ease, standing half again as tall as him. Muscles rippled beneath her dark skin, coarse patches of fur covering her. Every werewolf movie flashed through his mind upon seeing her, the likeliness uncanny.

Perhaps sensing his approach, she slowed to a halt, her massive paw wrapping the rough bark of a tree like it was a toy. Her breath was coarse, every heavy gasp for air a dull roar expelled from her gaping maw. Her back to him, her muscles moved beneath her skin like they were alive, straining to escape. Her long and hooked claws scraped chunks from the tree by just resting against it.

“Natalie, please,” Kal gasped, doubling over to gulp down air. “I didn’t know. I never meant to hurt you. I—”

Natalie’s roar echoed through the woods, Kal’s bones vibrating with the ferocity of the howl. The bark splintered in her hands as massive gouges were rent into it, sap seeping out like an open wound.

“Please. I’m sorry.”

She reared her head, massive fangs dripping with saliva as she snarled, eyes the color of glaciers boring through him.

“Please, let’s go back,” he pleaded, holding his ground as she lumbered toward him. She towered over him, his head barely at her chest, her eyes never leaving his. “We’ll figure this out. Together.”

Tears beaded at the corners of her blood-shot eyes, pain and doubt laid bare for him to see.

Extending his hand toward her, Kal beckoned to her.

For a moment, the forest stood still around them, as though holding its breath.

Natalie’s roar cut to his heart, her unbridled rage surging forth as she struck him across the chest, her brutal backhand sending him flying. Crashing through the bushes, he rolled across the ground, dirt spraying in his wake. Slamming against a tree, the bone-shattering impact left him stunned, gasping for air as he struggled to breathe.

Howling to the sky once more, Natalie fled into the darkness.

Drawing an aching breath, Kal’s chest creaked as though it had been caved inward. Struggling to his feet, pain lancing throughout his body, Kal took shaky steps as his head swam.

Gritting his teeth, Kal set out once more, chasing after her.

“NATALIE!” Kal’s cry faded across the still lake, hardly a ripple in response.

He’d lost her.

Even with his desperate pursuit, she’d eluded him. Not even her scent remained, the trail ending at the water’s edge.

How had it gone so wrong? One moment he was just a man happily experiencing the rush of burgeoning love with a woman he could see a future with, and the next he was a monster. Worse, a monster that had hurt her in ways he could never have imagined.
