The Aberdeen house, built back in the days when mint green paint was all the rage, was a cozy spot full of warm family memories. While they had all come from different places and at different times, it didn’t change the fact that it was their home now. The paint might be peeling, the floorboards might creak under every other step, the windows might be drafty, but it was a haven for all.

The entranceway to the house, scuffed from decades of wear and tear that only kids and teenagers could introduce, welcomed guests with the sweet scent of fresh-baked bread wafting from the kitchen that never seemed to fade. Ms. Aberdeen had been an avid baker, something she’d passed on to Hana who did her best to keep the little traditions alive and well. Hardly a meal went by without fresh dinner rolls or a loaf of bread waiting for them.

While there was a dining room on the first floor, it was hardly ever used as they all preferred to eat at the small table in the kitchen. Sitting elbow to elbow, it had always been a place of telling stories and laughing with one another. Ms. Aberdeen had made them a family, and her spirit endured even now after so many years.

Kaylie stood at the stove today, gently humming to herself as the briny broth swirled in the pot, a small whirlpool forming around the spoon she stirred with. Diced vegetables and cubed chunks of chicken floated by, filling the room with the tangy scent of chicken noodle soup. Beside Kaylie, ticking away like only those old appliances from the 90’s could, sat the toaster, its coils glowing red as it warmed the slices of white bread she’d placed in it.

Upstairs, while Kaylie busied herself with her cooking, Hana’s footsteps barely disturbed the carpeted floorboards as she expertly and without a second thought, moved on only the most solid and least squeaky boards. She knew the house like the back of her hand, often taking great delight in sneaking up on her siblings when they thought they were alone.

Today, though, the goal was different. Melissa was in one of her moods again, having been picking a fight with an obviously exhausted Kal earlier in the morning. It worried Hana to no end that Melissa couldn’t settle on just being happy that he was back, but she’d learned long ago not to push Melissa too hard. Much like Kal, she’d just dig in her heels and fight harder if she thought someone was pushing her toward something.

“Melissa? Sweety?” Hana called softly from outside Melissa’s door. “Are you doing okay?”

The muffled and disembodied voice of Melissa drifted through the door with a barely contained sigh lingering just on the edges of Hana’s hearing.

“I’m fine, Hana. Just tired.”

“Are you hungry? You haven’t been down since this morning. Did you have lunch?”

“ ... yeah.”

It wasn’t particularly clear, but Hana thought she heard the rumble of a stomach coming from the room.

“Well, I was thinking of making that vegetarian risotto you like for dinner.”

The rumbling on the other side of the door grew louder.

“I picked up some Fuji apples too,” Hana offered. “I could cut one up like I used to for you.”

“ ... without the skin?”

“Of course, but...”

“You’re going to make me come downstairs, aren’t you?” Melissa groaned, her forehead thudding softly against the other side of the door.

“If you want to.”

“Curse you and your witchy food ways,” Melissa grumbled.

“That’s a yes then? I’ll set a place for you. Be down at six, please.”

“Ugh, yes, mom.”

Hana rapped her knuckle disapprovingly against the door with a little scowl.

“Don’t call me that.”

“Sorry,” Melissa apologized half-heartedly as she cracked a grin.

Leaving her sister to putter around her room until dinner, Hana returned down the hallway, shutting Kaylie’s door along the way. All three had rooms on this side of the floor, with Kal’s off the other hallways by the upstairs sitting room. The master bedroom sat beside the stairs, though none of them could bear to move in there, keeping it a memorial for their adoptive mother.

Chewing her lower lip, Hana could only hope that Melissa would decide on her own to deal with her mood swings. When Kal had disappeared, Melissa had completely shut down. While Hana would sob intermittently while clutching Kal’s childhood teddy bear and Kaylie would stare listlessly out the window as though waiting for him to come back, Melissa had just ... stopped. She’d stopped eating. She’d stopped taking care of herself. She’d stopped leaving her room. She had just lain in her bed, unmoving for hours at a time, staring at the ceiling.
