Small flakes of snow danced on the winter winds, the sun peeking out from behind pale grey clouds promising only a merciful dusting of powder before giving way to brighter weather. The snow prickled lightly against the exposed skin of Kal’s face, the breeze tugging at his hair and light jacket. Beside him, Melissa stood rooted to the spot at the old playground, her emerald eyes barely peeking out from beneath her heavy wool knit cap and her nose buried in the high collar of her downy jacket. Like an overstuffed marshmallow, her arms wouldn’t fully stay at her sides, comically out at an angle even when standing still. Getting her even this far had been a challenge, her footsteps had grown steadily heavier until they’d finally ground to a halt, regardless of how he’d tugged at her hand.

Intertwining his bare fingers with her gloved one, Kal watched the few kids still energetic enough to brave the cold climbing the old monkey bars. The paint had long faded, only the hint of the bright yellows and oranges it had once been at the corners where little feet and hands rarely went. Many hours had they all played here while Hana had, often unsuccessfully, tried to corral them.

“Remember when Kaylie got stuck up there?” Kal asked, pointing with his free hand at the very top of the jungle gym set. “How she had tangled her leg I’ll never know, but she wouldn’t come down until we went up and rescued her.”

Over the laughter and cries of the kids, Kal barely made out a stifled grunt, the only indication that she’d even reacted the mild hiccup motion she’d made.

“And the turtle slide. Remember when you faceplanted when you were four? You scorpioned off the edge because you’d gone down backwards and upside down.”

He got more of a reaction to that, receiving a light kick to the shin.

“I know, I know,” Kal said, squeezing her hand. “You wouldn’t have done it if I hadn’t done it first.”

Another delayed kick, as if she had weighed the effort of objecting and decided that a swift kick would have been more economical.

Given that they’d been standing here for at least twenty minutes, they’d already missed the appointment he’d scheduled. He hadn’t held high hopes that she’d make it all the way to the building, but the playground was a good start. Perhaps another few tries and they’d even make it across the street.

“Getting kind of cold, huh?” Kal said, though he certainly didn’t feel it. “Want to go somewhere warm?”

Since Melissa was so bundled up, she had little mobility, especially with that high collar of hers, so in order to face him, she had to rotate her entire body so that she could see him through the small slit in her protection. Doing so would never not be funny, as it always reminded him of those old sci-fi movies where the actors couldn’t turn their heads or their costumes would break or fall off.

“Hmghn,” Melissa said, her lips no doubt buried beneath her scarf, further muffling the noise as it tried to pass through multiple layers of fluff. Her eyes, still tired and depressed, seemed to suggest she wasn’t taking another step toward the therapist’s office.

“No? How about the zoo?” Kal offered, sensing they wouldn’t be meeting with the professionals today. “You used to love watching the koalas.”

“Hmb.”

“We can take the bus.”

“Hm-hmm-hm?”

“I don’t think they’ll have cotton candy out.”

“Hmph.”

“Okay, we’ll get frozen dots while we’re there.”

While he’d largely been guessing as to what she meant, that seemed to at least chase some of that tiredness from her eyes. They weren’t quite gleaming, but more animated was a good start.

The wool cap stowed, Melissa’s flaming hair once more freed from its confines to run down her back, they stood hand in hand in front of the heated koala enclosure. The temperature inside a comfortable seventy degrees, they no longer needed to hide every inch of skin from the biting cold. Not that it changed much for Kal, who’d simply unzipped his hoody.
