Shades towered over Melissa, moving around her, their voices dull and indistinct. As though the murmur of a crowd, the sounds washed over her, the tall shapes closing in to block her way, shepherding her elsewhere.
Snippets of conversations, words barely remembered, traveled across the ether, biting into her exposed flesh.
“ ... died at childbirth...”
“ ... crashed ... didn’t make it...”
“ ... can’t take her...”
Every hushed tone thundered around her, tearing at her, weighing her legs down until she could barely move, the shadows pulling tighter.
“ ... don’t want her...”
“ ... he died...”
“ ... he’s gone...”
The void crushed her, her limbs frozen as she struggled, tears streaking her cheeks.
“Your fault!” Melissa spat, hands gripping tightly around her throat, squeezing her as she raged, choking the life from her. “You killed them! You don’t deserve to be loved!”
Melissa slowly opened her eyes, the dreary popcorn ceiling above her bed dancing in unfocused patterns as she tiredly blinked the sleep away. The sun had already risen above the horizon, yet her body dragged like she hadn’t slept a wink. Still tucked in her bed ... alone.
Always alone.
Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she expelled it slowly from between her lips, banishing the ghosts that haunted her.
The calm that settled shuddered as she turned her head, already knowing that Kal was gone.
He’d left her. Again.
No, that wasn’t fair. He’d stayed with her through the night, his heartbeat the only thing real and solid as she’d clung to him, desperate to stay afloat as the void had threatened to pull her under. He’d been there for her.
Melissa’s throat stung, the dry lump there swallowed only with great effort. Every inch of her felt raw, like an open wound.
Minutes slipped away as Melissa remained unmoving, staring straight up, barely feeling the warmth of the sun as if fell across her face. Even the creak of floorboards couldn’t rouse her, nor the click of her door, nor the light shuffling of socks across her carpet.
The bed dipped as Kal lay on the edge, one leg on the floor to keep himself from rolling off. He lay just an inch away, not quite touching, but close enough to feel the warmth radiating off him. Drawn to that safe presence, Melissa shifted, rolling into his chest, never making eye contact, only listening to the beat of his heart.
There was so much to say, and yet, nothing came to her lips, her voice locked away.
